2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Students share opinions on candidates By SHASHIDHAR SASTRY Staff Writer

With the presidential primaries and caucuses fast approaching, debates have grown increasingly heated among the presidential candidates and their supporters alike. Still more than a year away from the general election, eager Americans have started forming opinions early. “This election cycle is something that our generation has never seen before. We have 16 Republican candidates. That not just shows how diverse our party is, but more importantly how

diverse our country is,” Abigayle Spencer, chairwoman of Tech College Republicans, said. A cycle has developed within the last 24 years, with the political party of the U.S. president alternating every eight years. Spencer said she feels confident the U.S. will have a Republican president after Barack Obama. Economic and fiscal policies will play a pivotal role in the upcoming elections, she said, because the United States needs better economic and fiscal policies and a more conservative foreign policy.

Pi Kappa Phi raises funds through pie throwing By JENNIFER ROMERO L a Vida editor

Mia Martinez, a freshman from Midland, winds up for a solid throw of her pie into the face of Pi Kappa Phi member Andrew Ngo, a junior electrical engineering major from Dallas. The pie throw was hosted to raise money for The Ability Experience, an organization that constructs play units for children with disabilities.

Fraternities and sororities have national philanthropies they partner with, and they often volunteer with or host fundraising events for these organizations. The Texas Tech chapter of Pi Kappa Phi hosted the event Pie a Pi Kapp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Free Speech Area of the Student Union Building. Andy Koke, a junior marketing major from Plano and philanthropy chair for Pi Kappa Phi, said the event was an easy and cost effective way to raise money. “Since we’re a growing fraternity, our numbers have grown exponentially in the past two years that I’ve been here. It’s running smoothly now,” he said. “We’re a small fraternity, but we’re on the rise.” The fraternity set up a plywood board with a hole cut out for a person’s face, and people passing by could buy a pie tray filled with whipped cream for $1 to pie one of the fraternity members. Anyone could participate in the event, and Pi Kappa Phi had a card reader so people without cash could still donate. “This is our second or third time doing it, and every time we’ve raised a lot of money,” Koke said. “Now that we have the card reader, anyone can come up and do it.” Members of the fraternity spread out across the Free Speech Area asking people to donate, and people could choose which member they wanted to pie in the face.

William Catalan, a sophomore business major from Dallas, throws a pie in the face of Lon Bates, a freshman marketing major from Richmond, on Tuesday. For $1, participants could throw a pie at a Pi Kappa Phi fraternity member to support children with disabilities. All the members of Pi Kappa Phi took turns getting pied, and they all laughed and encouraged the donators to completely cover the members’ faces with the whipped cream. “At first (the members) were a little hesitant to do it, but once it starts getting going, everyone has a great time out here,” Koke said. “It’s nice to see everyone have fun and get together for a good cause.” All of the proceeds will go to Pi Kappa Phi’s national philanthropy, The Ability Experience, and Koke said the fraternity established and owns the organization. The Ability Experience helps those with disabilities, according to its website, and it builds play units for children with disabilities and funds many other projects.

“They raise awareness about people with disabilities,” Koke said. “That gives us an open range to support anybody. We usually work with the Burkhart Center, and we’ve also given money to veterans.” Mark Gregoire, a junior mechanical engineering major from Boston and member of Pi Kappa Phi, said the fraternity donates playground equipment and hosts summer camps for children with disabilities. Pie a Pi Kapp is one of the most successful fundraising events the fraternity hosts, Gregoire said, and it tries to host the event at least once a semester.
