City Council relinquishes Coliseum back to Tech
Goin’ Band hosts halftime wedding By AKHILA REDDY L a Vida Editor

The Goin’ Band from Raiderland alumni got married during the band’s halftime show at the Tech football game against West Virgina Saturday. As part of the show, Raider Red walked Hohnstein down the aisle.
In an action-packed game day between Texas Tech and West Virginia, there are few events that can distract from the game. However, on Saturday, a halftime show wedding, complete with Raider Red escorting the bride, stole the spotlight. The idea of performing a wedding as a Goin’ Band halftime show had always been a possibility, Eric Allen, the director of the Goin’ Band and associate professor of music, said. “I always well thought, ‘If I’m ever working with a terrific college marching band I’d love to do a wedding on the field at halftime.’ So, this was just a great opportunity to do that,” Allen said. The couple tying the knot, alumni Andrew Reinhart and Kelsey
Hohnstein, were both members of Goin’ band, Will Pyle, drum major and senior music education and music performance major from San Antonio, said. Pyle has known Reinhart since he was a freshman and Reinhart was a senior, he said, since they both play the saxophone. Reinhart and Hohnstein were together at the time. “Especially since they had such a close relationship with the Goin’ Band and Texas Tech, I think they felt it would be special to share it with the whole crowd,” Pyle said. While the couple was obviously integral to the show, Allen said the main focus of the show for the band was on the concept of a wedding itself.
After a Lubbock City Council vote approval, the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum and the land it sits on officially goes back to Texas Tech on Monday. The vote was approved during a City Council meeting on Thursday, Sept. 27. This follows the decision made by Lubbock voters in May to abandon the coliseum. Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said after the May vote that Tech will honor the upcoming event obligations the coliseum has planned through 2019 such as the ABC Pro Rodeo. After the planned commitments and events end in 2019, Tech plans to demolish the building. There are currently no definite plans on what will take the place of the building, but a new residence hall, a new parking lot and a dining hall for student athletes are all options mentioned by Schovanec. The university feels the area lends itself to a wide range of athletic oriented projects to take the building’s spot. @MattSetzekornDT

Red Raiders achieve second 3-0 start in Big 12 play in program history By NOAH MICIOTTO Sports Editor
The Texas Tech volleyball team has set remarkable milestones throughout the 17 games played thus far. Despite being a rather young squad composed of 14 underclassmen and only three juniors and three seniors, this season the Red Raiders are only five wins away from matching last season’s total of 19. Tech started its season strong with an 11-2 record in exhibition matches, but the Red Raiders seemed to have flipped a switch as they entered the heart of their schedule. Prior to beginning conference play, Tech coach Tony Graystone made it known that his team was playing with a purpose. “I know the urgency is going to kick in, and we get to put our attention on some teams we’re more familiar with that have a little bit more of a personal feeling for us, teams that we’re wanting to get after,” Graystone said, according to Tech Athletics.
to Tech Athletics. Hill has carried over her sophomore season success and already racked up 200 kills as a junior, with 10 of the year’s total coming during Tech’s Big 12 Conference opener.
The Texas Tech men’s and women’s cross-country teams competed in the Nuttycombe Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin Friday, Sept. 28 in Madison, Wisconsin. The women’s team ran the course first and placed 33rd overall, according to Tech Athletics. Once again, the first Red Raider to cross the finish line was sophomore Lauren Offerman, who finished with a personal record at 21.55.6. Two more of Tech’s women earned personal records in this meet. Freshman Sesilia Dala clocked a new best time of 22.13.6, and junior Bret Leigh Nance followed closely behind at 22.40.8, for her new personal record, according to Tech Athletics.

The Texas Tech volleyball team celebrates after scoring a point against Iowa State Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, in the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders defeated the Cyclones, 3-1, to stay undefeated in conference play. Tech wasted no time before proving Graystone’s statement to be true. On Sept. 19, the Red Raiders carried their five-game winning streak to Waco and topped then No. 19 Baylor, 3-1. There are a few Red Raiders that pose potential threats to op-
posing teams, but one of the most dangerous is junior outside hitter Emily Hill. The native of Denton transferred from Mississippi State after her freshman year, according to Tech Athletics. Last season, Hill ended with a team high 416 kills, according
