Tech slated for 4-game road stretch

he Texas Tech soccer team is in the midst of a hard-fought season, and is looking to end its campaign on a solid note, as the Red Raiders are primed for the second half of conference play.

The Red Raiders don an overall record of 9-3-1 through 13 games this season, claiming a conference record of 1-2-1, according to Tech Athletics.

The Red Raiders lone win in the Big 12 came when they beat the Iowa State Cyclones, 3-0.

Tech has had more success while playing at home this season compared to being away, boasting a record of 6-2 on its own turf, according to Tech Athletics. On the other side of things, the Red Raiders promote a record of 3-1-1 in road games, with the sole loss coming at the hands of Boston College, Sept. 1.

There are five conference matches remaining on Tech’s schedule this season, and of the Red Raiders last five games, four in a row are away contests.

After the road trip, Tech will return to Lubbock and finish its season against the University of Texas, Oct. 25.

Tech’s upcoming game will be against No. 16 Oklahoma State University at 6 p.m. Oct. 5, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, according to Tech Athletics.

Last year against Oklahoma State the Red Raiders suffered a 1-0 loss at home. OSU has a 10-2-1 record for the season and bear a conference record of 2-1-1.

“You can’t ignore the team we’re playing, they won the league last year, they didn’t lose many players from last year’s team and they play a unique way,” Tech coach Tom Stone said on Oklahoma State.

He continued by saying that they key for victory is a matter of “How effective, clean, and efficient can we be; you know, a well thought out finish.”

Following OSU, Tech is set against Kansas State University 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in Manhattan, Kansas, according to Tech Athletics. In 2017, the Red Raiders overpowered Kansas State, 3-1 in Lubbock. The Wildcats are 4-6-2 on the season, with a conference record of 0-3-0.

College recruitment seeks to personalize outreach

Board of Regents to host October meeting in Lubbock

With the rise in college students applying to multiple colleges, the efforts going into marketing are increasing. In the wake of this, admissions now have to focus on personalization.

“The charge of the admissions department is to tell the Texas Tech story to as many prospective students in hopes that they fall in love with Texas Tech and want to become Red Raiders,” Jamie Hansard, executive director of Undergraduate Admissions said. “We do this in part by crafting creative marketing messages through a communication plan, which we manage. Prospective students and parents connect with us through their admission counselor whose responsibility is

to ensure relationships are created from the moment the student begins their college search.”

Along with admissions counselors, Tech reaches out across the state, country and globe through several programs.

“We personalize the experience through our campus visit program or special events such as Raider Roadshow, Transfer Visit Day and Texas Tech Preview to name a few,” Hansard said. “At these events, students and parents can come and learn more about Texas Tech and meet the Tech family.”

Colleges within the university also take part in marketing at these events.

“We have an excellent partnership with university admissions and their recruiting, I know our college participates in college fairs

and recruitment events like the Red Raider roadshow,” Todd Chambers, associate dean for Undergraduate Affairs with the College of Media and Communication said. “I have really been impressed with how Tech does recruiting. We’re not like other colleges that are smack dab in the middle of the state’s population. We just need to get people to step foot on campus and realize this is a special place.”

The college utilizes materials which market the endorsements and the job possibilities from said endorsements. High school students in the state have to choose an endorsement in the eighth grade and they use it in high school for graduation plans.

The Texas Tech University Board of Regents will meet at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, inside the Texas Tech System building located at 1508 Knoxville Avenue.

This meeting will be the first since Robert Duncan announced his retirement from the role of chancellor, as well as the first meeting for Texas Tech Health Sciences Center President Tedd Mitchell as interim chancellor.

It will also be the first meeting between the regents since former Amarillo mayor, Jerry Hodge, withdrew his proposed $10 million donation for Tech’s vet school and called for Board of Regents Chairman Rick Francis to either resign or be fired.

Tech Graduate Center offers resources for grad students

One’s college journey will consist of many challenges and moments of stress. For graduate students working to further their education, resources are available on campus to help them overcome obstacles.

Whether one is working on their master’s or doctorate, there are many services on the Texas Tech campus aimed at helping graduate students succeed in their education and obtain skills necessary for their future.

The Tech Graduate Center is a facility, which consists of computer labs, lounging areas and meeting rooms, that provides graduate students with educational essentials.

Jacek Jonca-Jasinski, director of the Tech Division of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and director of the Graduate Center, said the thesis and dissertation formatting services, research assistance, poster printing and professional headshots are only a few of the resources provided at the Graduate Center.

“We do whatever benefits graduate students,” JoncaJasinski said. “We are not afraid to get our hands dirty and make things happen.”

The Graduate Center, which is open for 24 hours and located in the basement of the west wing of the Administration Building, is a facility all graduate students can access.

“If you are enrolled in

graduate courses, you ultimately have access,” JoncaJasinski said. “Your student ID unlocks the center.”

Providing graduate students with the resources to succeed is one goal of the Graduate Center. With the many students on campus working to obtain a master’s or doctorate, organizations are available to support education beyond the undergraduate experience.

The Tech Graduate Assembly is an organization that aids the graduate student body on campus.

Tala Karkar-Esperat, president of the Graduate Assembly and a doctoral candidate from Jerusalem, who is studying in curriculum and instruction, said the Graduate Assembly strives to promote different events and resources for graduate students.

“It is basically the graduate organization that represents the graduate school, the graduate students,” Karkar-Esperat said. “It is the graduate organization for students from all different disciplines.”

Graduate Assembly events, such as game nights, social gatherings or holiday dinners, are ways she said graduate students can get involved and not be isolated within their own college.

“We try to embrace that individualism,” Karkar-Esperat said. “Our mission is to have a very inclusive environment.”

Whether it be events hosted by the Graduate Assembly or services within the Graduate Center, there are many re-

sources aimed at supporting all graduate students on campus.

Research is one aspect of the college experience that some students need assistance to conduct.

Brian Quinn, graduate librarian, assists students at the Tech library and at the Graduate Center with any research questions or concerns.

“I work a lot with graduate students and trying to help them with their research,” Quinn said. “It is different working with undergraduates because graduate students tend to have more in-depth questions. In some ways more interesting.”

Helping one find sources for a research paper, manage citations or obtain research strategies in workshops are library services graduate students have access to on campus.

“It’s really important to know about the tools that we have and utilize them,” Quinn said. “When they find out that they have this suite of tools available to them, they’re usually pleased and relieved to know about them.”

Through the Graduate Center services, such as library assistance, statistical consulting or writing support, students can better their education after their undergraduate journey.

Although, not all resources for graduate students are offered by the graduate school on campus.

The Communication Training Center in the College of Media and Communication is dedicated to helping students

improve communication skills.

Luke LeFebvre, director of the CTC, said the center strives to help graduate students with different aspects of their education.

“We focus specifically on working with graduate students and faculty to improve oral and visual communication skills,” LeFebvre said. “For the classroom, research conference or presentation.”

The lessons learned at the center, whether it be through signature or custom workshops, provide skills that he said help the students communicate in and out of the classroom.

“These communication skills transcend any discipline,” LeFebvre said. “Offering this to graduate students, but also faculty and undergraduate students, are really important for the future.”

Regardless of one’s classification in college, effective communication is a skill most students need for their time at college or their future careers.

With the many services on campus, graduate students can learn more than just communicating effectively in a school setting.

The Graduate Student Writing Center, which is located in the Graduate Center, is a department aimed at improving the writing skills of students writing research papers, theses or dissertations after their time as an undergrad.

“All of our services are designed to help graduate students expand their written communication skills,” Messuri said. “What we do is we have collaborative services where we work with graduate students with their writing, provide feedback, answer questions they may have.”

Regardless of the progress a student has reached in the writing process, she said the writing consultants at the center, who consist of professors and other graduate students, are there to help students with all writing needs.

“Our writing consultants come from across the univer-

sity,” Messuri said. “We recognize that writing in different disciplines is very different at the graduate level. So, we try to provide support for all students, regardless of their field or department.”

Writing skills, efficient communication, research assistance and places to study are just some of the many resources that are available to graduate students through different facilities on campus.

The need for assistance is one aspect of the post undergraduate education that Tech can help fulfill with the variety of services offered.

Officer killed, 6 other officers wounded in South Carolina shooting FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — Seven South Carolina law enforcement officers were shot Wednesday, one fatally, in a confrontation with a man who held children hostage as he fired on the officers, officials said.

The suspect was taken

into custody and the children weren’t hurt after a two-hour standoff in an upscale neighborhood just outside of Florence, not far from areas that were devastated by flooding from Hurricane Florence, authorities said.

Florence County deputies from inside a home as they came to serve a warrant around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Florence County Sheriff ’s Maj. Mike Nunn said.

The suspect then shot four Florence city police officers, one fatally, as officers from all

around the area swarmed in to help, Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler said.

A bullet-proof vehicle had to be used to rescue the wounded officers as the man held children hostage inside for two hours, Nunn said.

why they were serving a warrant on the man. They also did not name him or the wounded officers, nor did they give the conditions for the wounded.

Tech Alumni Association benefits graduates, students

The Texas Tech Alumni Association benefits its alumni and students.

Brett Winegarner, director of communications for the Tech Alumni Association, said most people do not know the Alumni Association is actually a nonprofit not directly tied to the university.

“We have a wonderful relationship with the university, and we do so much for them and they do so much for us,” Winegarner said. “We’re super, closely tied and that’s why so many don’t know we’re actually a separate part.”

He said the Alumni Association acts as a voice and connection for Tech alumni.

CONTINUED FROM PG. 1 “A big chunk of our recruiting materials tried to provide a better path like, ‘Hey don’t forget if you’re in business and industry, a career path could be this,’” Chambers said. “We don’t want to take away from anybody else, but we just want to share our story and say ‘Hey, we have students that have left here and are working for this organization and they’re doing media and communication type jobs.’”

But the real goal according to Chambers, is sharing Tech’s story.

“We never ever, ever not want to help another college at Tech,” Chambers said.

“We want to see Texas Tech be exceptional and grow and we want to share our story. Our goal is to help them find their passion.

Tech has a lot to offer students not just in the state of Texas, but in a national and international perspective.”

As communications director, he said his job is to find the thread that connects alumni who have left Lubbock.

“We like to create an environment for Red Raiders and linking them back to their home here in Raiderland,” Winegarner said.

The association raises scholarships for students, Winegarner said. “ We a w a r d e d n e a r l y quarter of a million dollars this last year in scholarships,” Winegarner said.

“That’s probably one of the biggest things we do and push for.”

Kristina Butler, the vice

president of marketing for the Alumni Association, said being a member is a way for alumni to stay connected and give back to the university.

“Being a member provides many benefits,” Butler said. “A couple things we do is partner with companies so alumni can receive discounts and provide events in areas around the country so alumni can connect.”

Butler said the Alumni Association helps alumni keep a sense of pride and loyalty to the university.

“The association’s main goal is to help the next generation of students and provide financial support to the university,” Butler said. “The more money and awareness that’s raised for the university, the more

students come and then the more that ultimately graduate from Tech.”

She said the Alumni Association has recently done some rebranding in its logo to help promote the relationship with the university.

“We incorporated the double T in our logo. That’s really solidified our connection with the university, and we have the logo ‘You’re one of us,’” Butler said. “People can be a member here whether they’re alumni to Tech or not, we really promote allinclusiveness; if you’re a Red Raider at heart, you’re one of us.”

Chad Elrod, the director of membership for the Alumni Association, said the association currently has 30,713 members and is still growing. He said there

international levels make the school appealing to prospective students.

“We are looking through a global lens in creating an environment at Texas Tech that is appealing to international students,” Kelley Coleman, director of International Enrollment Development & Outreach said. “We must consider the country, the culture and their needs. It takes strategic planning and thoughtful action to internationalize a campus, and we spend a great deal of time in doing both.”

All recruiting across the university has changed significantly due to the competition for college. “ To d a y, s t u d e n t s a r e savvy when it comes to marketing messages and we see this as a challenge to ensure that our story telling resonates and is authentic,” Hansard said.

“Students expect personalized experiences with those that they engage with be it higher education or their favorite retailer. It’s our charge to ensure that students feel that we know

them and understand who they are and their goals.”

Chambers noticed the same regarding the competition, he said.

“There are so many different avenues that our students can got to,” Chambers said. “That’s what we’re really about, the biggest change I’ve seen in these short five years is emphasis on nontraditional ways for reaching students, the average number of colleges a prospective student applies to is five. You start thinking about that, like for me, in 1984, I thought about going to some other places, but I applied to Tech.”

Chambers understands the importance of utilizing technology to reach prospective students better.

“The few things I have noticed is a lot of focus on social media platforms, trying innovative and different vehicles, Chambers said. “One thing that hasn’t changed and I don’t think it ever will it’s just that face-to-face, shaking someone’s hand, looking them in the eye and say-

ing ‘What are you passionate about? What do you want to do?’ That’s our job, to show you around.

We want to answer questions and if we don’t know the answer, we can direct someone to them that hopefully has that answer.

I think what’s exciting though is to look at Texas Tech, in general, and just Tech’s story is fascinating.

You can just feel it in the air, and you can see the innovation, and you can see the opportunity. You just need to get students to our campus, and they find that opportunity.”

With the competition, the atmosphere on campus is vital to the school.

“The best-selling point of Texas Tech University is the friendliness and the accessibility of our institution and our people,” Hansard said. “Once students set foot on our campus and see the beautiful campus, they immediately see why so many other students choose to call it home and why so many alumni have such fond memories.”

“The membership contributions assist the Tech Alumni Association in providing student scholarships,” he said.

Elrod said by joining the association, a bond between students and alumni will strengthen, and it is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the Alumni Association.

He said the association is where the traditions and Red Raider spirit is kept for alumni.

“It’s where all Red Raiders from all walks of life are welcomed to unite in the betterment of our beloved Texas

Tech University,” Elrod said.

“A place where Red Raider spirit and traditions are upheld and fostered.”

Elrod said it is a place where students, friends and alumni are always welcomed, and it encourages students to come see the association.

“My favorite quote written by Arch Lamb, Texas Tech Class of 1939 and founder of Saddle Tramps reads, ‘Like the soul of man, you can’t put your finger on it, can’t draw a picture of it. School Spirit just appears when you need it, then disappears until it is needed again.’”

US Navy veteran arrested in suspicious mailings SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A U.S. Navy veteran in Utah was arrested Wednesday in connection with suspicious envelopes that were sent to President Donald Trump and top military chiefs.

William Clyde Allen III, 39, was taken into custody in in the small northern Utah city of Logan, said Melodie Rydalch, a spokeswoman for the state’s U.S. attorney’s office.

The arrest comes after authorities confirmed an investigation into two envelopes once thought to contain ricin and later found to be castor seeds, the substance from which the

poison is derived. They can cause injury if swallowed.

The FBI said there were potentially hazardous chemicals involved with their operation in Utah on Wednesday, but declined to give additional details. No attorney was immediately listed for Allen.

The envelopes addressed to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the Navy’s top officer, Adm. John Richardson, were isolated at a mail screening facility and sent to the FBI. No one was injured, and neither envelope entered the Pentagon. Mattis is traveling in Europe this week.

McConnell sets Friday test vote on Kavanaugh nomination WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set a crucial threshold vote for Friday on Brett Kavanaugh’s tottering Supreme Court nomination, moving his polarized chamber toward a potential confirmation roll call over the weekend that would determine which party wins an election-season battle royale that has consumed the nation.

McConnell, R-Ky., touched off the process late Wednesday and announced that sometime during the evening, the FBI would deliver to an anxious Senate the potentially fateful document on claims that Kavanaugh sexually abused women. With Republicans clinging to a razor-thin 51-49 majority and five senators — including three Republicans — still vacillating, the conservative jurist’s prospects of Senate confirmation remained murky and highly dependent on the file’s contents, which are supposed to be kept secret.

The report was arriving at a Capitol palpably tense over the political stakes of the nomination fight and from aggressive anti-Kavanaugh protesters who have rattled and reportedly harassed senators. Feeding the anxiety was an unusually beefy presence of the U.S. Capitol Police, who were keeping demonstrators and frequently reporters at arms length by forming wedges around lawmakers walking through corridors.

Amid complaints that some lawmakers were being confronted outside their homes, McConnell claimed on the Senate floor that the protesters were “part of the organized effort” to derail Kavanaugh’s nomination.

These boys’ clubs bristle and band together when their way of life is challenged as abusive of the power they hold. We allow men in these positions the opportunity to not only mess up, but also then make excuses and have a second, third or fourth chance with little to no actual consequences for their actions. We do not allow women that same luxury.

The fact that Brett Ka-

vanaugh is still under consideration for a seat on the Supreme Court when there is even the possibility that he has committed multiple sexual assaults speaks volumes about the leniency we allow those accused of and/or found guilty of sexual assault while in a less public role.

In fact, VOX reported more than 200 celebrities, politicians, CEOs and others in the public sphere have been accused of sexual misconduct since April 2017. Looking through the list, a few names stand out as ones which have been covered by the news

in greater detail: Louis C.K., Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, Larry Nassar. These men, in some cases, have been reprimanded for their actions, but in other cases like that of Louis C.K. they have been welcomed back into their influential space in the public sphere after a brief hiatus, according to VOX. The list also has an alarming number of names which have received little to no coverage by mainstream media because the people behind them are not well enough known; they have no draw. The less public

a person’s life is, the less society tends to hold them accountable. When they are held accountable, the punishment is rarely as severe as the crime they committed.

At this point in time, it should be no surprise to anyone that football culture and rape culture go hand-in-hand (see: Baylor University). On her website, Jessica Luther – a reporter who broke the Baylor rape scandal – has a list of college football sexual assault investigations and cases dating back to the 1970s. The list has not been updated since 2016 and is lacking mention of

the allegations against Duffey, but it still has more than 100 cases listed, some with multiple allegations for a single person. These are only the cases that one person could find that have gone through some sort of formal proceeding. So many more cases are never reported at all.

But, while many are willing to admit there is a flaw in the culture of other schools, they are hesitant to recognize the problems within their own institution. This is a problem everywhere. This is a problem in Lubbock. @DailyToreador

Former Amarillo Mayor Hodge leads charge in vet school conflict

T

he most recent major development in the Duncan-Regent story has been from Former Amarillo Mayor Jerry Hodge, who has been out for vengeance for Texas Tech Board of Regents Chairman Rick Francis ever since he withdrew a $10 million dollar donation for the proposed Vet School in mid September.

Hodge withdrew the donation after the ousting of Chancellor Robert Duncan in August and later word of a BoR discussion on how to use his donation. Hodge has been on tear the last couple of weeks and I couldn’t be happier, someone needed to stand up for Tech and

Chancellor Duncan and until there is a story that makes sense or ground is broken for construction on a vet School I hope Hodge keeps at it.

In a radio interview with Jay Leeson, Hodge again renewed his claim pressuring Francis to step down from the board, a position Hodge feels Francis has occupied for to long already.

He also gave details of plans to attempt to move the Tech Dental School from Francis hometown of El Paso to Ama-

rillo. Hodge even promised that if the Dental School was moved that he would personally donates the land for the campus. The Dental School is one of two projects Chancellor Duncan was very passionate about. “Now, [Hodge] and a few Amarilloans are hitting Francis where it hurts— perhaps hurting the board chairman financially— in a potential attempt to swipe the dental school from Francis,” Leeson wrote on his site, theothersideoftexas.com.

That’s not all either.

Hodge has also started a letter writing campaign at firefrancis.com, encouraging West Texans to write the Texas Tech Board of Regents

as well as Governor Abbott demanding new leadership for the Board of Regents.

The website reading “Rick Francis needs to be fired.

And we need your help. The firing of Chancellor Robert Duncan, which was led by Chairman Rick Fran-cis, was done in poor taste, without cause, and has led to a mistrust of the Texas Tech University (TTU) Board of Regents (BOR) among our state’s leaders, Texas Tech supporters, and alumni. We are urging TTU BOR Chair Rick Francis to do the right thing and step down from his position immediately.”

I applaud Hodge for dedication to this important issue; he is a hero for Texas

Tech and true West Texan.

There is no reason why Texas Tech should not have a Vet School and that a satisfactory story that clears Texas A&M and Governor Abbott of a hand in this matter has yet to emerge, which leaves me and many others wondering what really happened. Until a Tech vet School opens its doors the Tech community should be making noise and holding those in power accountable if the project is halted. As an Alumni this coming spring I can say without a doubt that I will be hesitant to make any donation to Tech until this matter is completely resolved. @DailyToreador

Nun Helen Prejean urges students to campaign against death penalty

She grew up privileged, well educated and insulated from the tragedies within our judicial system. She became a spiritual advisor for a man on death row.

She spoke with him and got to know him through appeal after appeal until she finally sat in front of him as he was killed by the electric chair. She has since been a spiritual advi-

Sister Helen elaborated on the long history surrounding capital punishment. It had been almost eliminated until the late 1970s when it gained traction again and increased dramatically. Texas is the fifth leading government i n e x e c u t i o n s . We a r e among the top five, including Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Texas averages 15 executions per year.

She continued to ad-

dress the effect that executions have on those wardens that serve on “strap down teams” and perform the executions themselves. She explained that many families of victims oppose the death penalty. It lengthens the process they have to go through. The press shows up at their door after every development. It draws out the healing time for years and years on end. The average time a prisoner waits from sentencing to execution is 15 years.

Additionally, the death penalty is incredibly costly. Cases without the death penalty cost $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. The cost of appeals and housing are incredibly high.

There are always arguments on both sides of every issue, but Sister Helen certainly paints a bleak picture of the reality surrounding the death penalty in this country. @DailyToreador

Quidditch more than Harry Potter game

Competing on the field, Cindy Alvarado has seen players with concussions, a broken collarbone, twisted ankles and has even dislocated her own shoulder. She is not referring to a game of soccer or rugby though; she is referring to Quidditch, the sport popularized by witches and wizards in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series.

Alvarado, a graduate student pursuing a master’s of business administration, is starting her third year on the Quidditch team. She also, to the surprise of many, hates Harry Potter.

“I don’t like Harry Potter,” Alvarado said. “I hate Harry Potter. I think Harry Potter is overrated and overhyped. It’s frustrating that people always think I’m a Harry Potter fan because I play Quidditch.”

This is not an uncommon opinion among those who play Quidditch, Hannah Burks, the Quidditch team president and a junior cell and molecular biology major from Weatherford, said.

There are two types of players in the Quidditch community, she said. Some players, like her, joined Quidditch as an extension of love for

Harry Potter.

“I first joined because I thought it was a book club of sorts, but then I saw it was like a real sport and stayed because it was a lot of fun,” Burks said Other players, like Alvarado, do not think Quidditch relates much to the books. More than half of the approximately 20 members on the team have not even read the books or seen the movies, Alvarado said.

“People are starting to distinguish it from Harry Potter,” Alvarado said. “One of the new kids who joined said he’d heard about Quidditch, but not from Harry Potter. He’d just heard about it as an actual sport.”

Regardless of the reasons why Quidditch started becoming popular, it has grown past its’ literary roots into a fullfledged sport, Derek Malone, a graduate student studying wildlife and aquatic science management from Keller, said.

Malone has been on the Quidditch team for five years.

“I think that in the beginning, that conception that Quidditch wasn’t really a sport was 100 percent true, but as the sport has progressed we’re getting further and further away from it,” he said.

There are Quidditch teams all around the world, Burks said. There are official rule books and referees who must

qualify to oversee the match, she said.

The Texas Tech Quidditch team made it to nationals last year, she said, and they played teams from all across the state and country.

“At nationals, we’ve played against universities like Rochester, Harvard, Florida, whatever, from everywhere,” Burks said.

The actual sport can best be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby, she said. It is a full contact, coed sport and players wear no pads.

There are six people on each team, she said. There are two beaters who essentially function as defense, three chasers who score by sinking a ball into three hoops, and a keeper who defends the hoops. Lastly, there is a seeker who must catch the snitch.

“The snitch is wearing yellow shorts with a tennis ball velcroed to the back, and as soon as the seeker gets the tennis ball, they rip it off and the game is over,” she said.

All the players have plastic pipes representing broomsticks, Alvarado, said, and they must hold them between their legs.

“It looks silly, I’m not going to lie,” she said. “It looks really silly, but it’s probably

one of the most difficult things people first struggle with when they first join.”

Quidditch is physically and mentally demanding, Lucas Callen, a senior education major from Austin and current Quidditch team captain, said. It requires a lot of cardio, and players must be quick on their feet.

“The people who do come out, they see the physicality it takes, and it changes their perception pretty quick,” he said.

They have many people who have played or are playing other sports on the team, he said.

“A couple of years ago, we had one of the basketball players from Tech come out and he enjoyed it and said it was a lot harder than he thought it was going to be,” Callen said. “And then we’ve had people that play rugby and lacrosse and all other sports and they enjoy it because it is a real sport.”

In the future, as the popularity of the Harry Potter books wane, Quidditch might get to a point where it becomes independent from the books, Malone said.

“It’s starting to get away from it now and that’s not a bad thing,” he said.

Burkhart Center provides real-world experience for those with autism

By RILEY GOLDEN Staff Writer

The Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research offers an internship program for individuals with Autism, allowing them to work around campus to help transition into a working environment. Three of those interns work at the Quizno’s located inside the Burkhart Center.

Spencer Ragland has worked at Quizno’s for nearly four years, and she loves every aspect of her job.

“I love my job here because I get to talk to customers. I get to see how their day went and what they’re majoring in. I get to help out my team and I get to do lots of fun stuff here,” Ragland said. “I like it because I get paid decent money, but I’m not here for that, I’m here for the customers.”

Morgan Brundrett, who has worked at Quizno’s for about two and a half years, said she enjoys interacting with all of her coworkers and customers.

“What I like about working here is that the customers are nice,” Brundrett said. “My coworkers are pretty awesome to work with, and I just like to

get up and keep myself busy and make people happy.”

While working at Quizno’s can be stressful at times, Brundrett said that it has helped her build confidence and helped her learn how to work with people that are different from her.

More than just working with each other, the employees show a genuine appreciation for each other.

“I learn a lot from them, and we help each other,” Ragland said. “My coworkers are amazing here. I mean, we get along so well, we never have any problems with each other.”

Mandy Herrera, manager of Quizno’s, was intimidated to work with them at first, but she’s come to really enjoy the people that she works with.

“These individuals that I work with every day, they’re great, positive people, that are always upbeat, very friendly and kind,” Herrera said.

“They’re a joy to work with, we’re always laughing. Sometimes we’ll just break out and sing. It’s fun and they’re great.”

While they enjoy working at Quizno’s, they also have hobbies outside of work.

Brundrett also has several hobbies, one of them being writing scripts for BurkTech, an acting program that works with those on the Autism spectrum disorder, ranging from elementary to high school kids.

“Sometimes I like to take walks, sometimes I play games, computer or consoles, I like to read, I like writing and drawing,” Brundrett

said. “It could depend on writing scripts for BurkTech or drawing different styles of art that I find interesting.”

Outside of work and hobbies, these girls just have a generally positive outlook on life, and it radiates off of them.

“I want the world to know that you can do anything you want, as long as you stick with it and you’re passionate about it,” Ragland said. “Just go for it and be happy with what you’re doing.” @DailyToreador

Red Raiders hit road for Houston Tournament

The Texas Tech softball team will have its first road trip of the fall season this weekend, as the Red Raiders are set to compete in the fourgame Houston Tournament, slated for Saturday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 7.

Tech looks to build on last spring’s success in away games, as the Red Raiders ended their season with an 11-9 record on the road.

Along with a win-heavy performance while traveling, Tech ended its season with 31 total wins, marking a team best since 2014, according to Tech Athletics.

The Red Raiders prominence at the plate last season have set high expectations for the team’s follow-up season.

Last spring, four of Tech’s frequent starters hit for averages above .300, according to Tech Athletics. Luckily for Tech, all four Red Raiders will return to the squad this year.

Tech’s offensive showing in the spring was one of the

most essential components toward the Red Raiders’ success. However, Tech’s play in the field frequently undermined a few of its hardearned runs. At the end of the season, Tech finished at sixth overall in the conference for team fielding with a fielding percentage at .963, according to Big12sports.com.

Just four months after the conclusion of the spring season, Tech has begun to adjust. With three exciting wins under their belt, the Red Raiders have set the tone for their 10-game fall season early on, totaling 52 runs through 23 innings played, according to Tech Athletics. As the Red Raiders head south, the team will get a look at more intense competition in their upcoming tournament.

Tech will face off against the University of Houston Cougars and the Lamar University Cardinals two times each throughout the two-day span. The Red Raiders will start the tournament off by taking on the Cardinals, with

Race to the MLS playoffs Let the clinching commence.

It’s that time of year when Major League Soccer teams are scrambling to finish above the red line in the standings for a spot in the playoffs. Four teams are already headed to the postseason.

FC Dallas, which finished just outside of a playoff berth with a seventh-place finish in the West last season, was the first in its conference to qualify for a spot this season.

The victory tightened the race for the Supporter’s Shield: Atlanta has just a one-point edge with 63 overall points with three games remaining.

The Cardinals enter Saturday’s game fresh off the hiring of a completely new coaching staff. Lamar ended its spring season with a 28-28 overall record, according to Lamar Athletics. The Cardinals are composed of an upperclassmen heavy squad, with six juniors and five seniors.

Last spring, LU hit for a team batting average at .282 on the year. On the other side of things, Lamar struggled, as each of its pitchers had ERAs over 3.00, according to Lamar Athletics. The Red Raiders and Cardinals are similar teams in regard to strengths and weaknesses.

To defeat Lamar, Tech must have assertive command in the circle, and the other eight defenders must play error-free defense behind the starters.

On another note, junior Lamar transfer Shelby Henderson will take on some familiar faces in Tech’s bout against the Cardinals. After facing Lamar, Tech will be faced with a challenge in its game against Houston.

I n t h e s p r i n g , Te c h dropped both of its games against the Cougars 4-1, 8-2, according to Tech Athletics.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Red Raiders will see a closely similar roster as they did last spring, as the Cougars graduated only three seniors, according to Houston Athletics.

Houston will enter the tournament looking to build on its impressive spring season, in which the Cougars went 21-11 at home, 10-6 on the road and 13-8 in conference play to end with a respective 37-22 record overall.

Junior utility pitcher Savannah Heebner led the Cougars charge last year by toting a 26-10 record with 13 shutouts.

Heebner, who recorded 150 strikeouts and held a 1.15 ERA while allowing only 34 walks in 237.2 innings pitched, was given AllAmerican recognition for her efforts in the circle. On the other side of the plate, junior Arielle James led Tech with a .360 batting average through 59 games played. James also had the second most RBIs for

beat out Tech in terms of their current record, at 101-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Big 12 play. Last year in Austin, the Red Raiders dropped a close match, losing to UT by a score of 3-2 in a game that went into double overtime and ended in a shootout.

Tech will depend heavily on its consistent playmakers to close out the fall. Junior forward Jade King is tied for second place in the Big 12 in goals scored, notching six so far on the season, according to the Big 12 website. King is also tied for eighth in the conference in points, tallying a total of 12 points on the year.

Another notable asset of the team is sophomore forward Kirsten Davis. The offensive catalyst is finding success this season, ranking in a tie for fifth in the Big 12 in assists, with four so far, according to the Big 12 website. Davis adds on to her success by claiming two goals this season.

On the other side of the ball, sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Zucchetto has been lights out for the Red Raiders, claiming a Big 12 leading eight shutouts this year, according to the Big 12 website. Additionally, Zucchetto maintains the third lowest goals against average in the conference with her average of 0.53 through 13 games played.

Last year in Lubbock, the Red Raiders finished with a 1-1 tie against Kansas after forcing the game into double overtime. Kansas, who started the season inside the top 25 rankings, has an overall record of 8-2-2 and a conference record of 2-1-0.

Tech will then come back to their home state to compete against Texas Christian University at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Fort Worth, according to Tech Athletics. In 2017, the Red Raiders endured a 1-0 loss against TCU at home that went into overtime. TCU currently owns an overall record of 8-3-2 and a record of 1-2-1 in conference.

Tech will face one of their toughest competitors at home to wrap up the season. The Red Raiders will go against the No. 10 University of Texas at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock. The game will be aired live on Fox Sports Southwest Plus, according to Tech Athletics.

Lady Raiders prepare for 2018-2019 season

The Texas Tech women’s basketball team is ready to kick off its 2018-2019 season, just over a month away. In an attempt to turn things around from last year, Tech decided to bring in a new head coach for the program.

Marlene Stollings, who spent four years as the head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team, began to make an impact for Tech before the Lady Raiders even began practicing. Stollings made the decision to recruit a practice squad for her team, and the details were a bit different from the norm.

Reason being, the practice squad was composed of male students at Tech. The group known as “The Movement” has turned into a thorough scout team that Stollings said will help the Lady Raiders in their coming season.

“People want to know

about ‘The Movement,’ and what I can tell you about ‘The Movement’ is a few things,” Stollings said. “’The Movement’ is a cultural shift back into the tradition and what we want to be about.”

Stollings said she wants to take the team back to the top of the NCAA. There are no excuses why the Lady Raiders should not be able to jump back into the same success they had when Marsha Sharp was head coach, she said.

“We share a vision of winning again. Winning the Big 12 titles again and winning a National Championship once again. We all know this program has done it and I took this job believing that all of us can and will do it again,” Stollings said.

The new to Tech coach brings her effective coaching habits and impressive resume to Lubbock, making the Lady Raiders confident in her abilities to win games.

Stollings’ coaching style has proved to be successful, as she

took the University of Wisconsin to the NCAA tournament on multiple occasions, according to Tech Athletics.

Stollings is also striving to bring an up tempo style to Tech. Furthermore, the Lady Raiders’ practices have intensified with the effort of sufficiently preparing Tech for their new style of fast paced games.

“The up tempo style is putting people in positions to be successful individually within the team structure system,” Stollings said. “I won’t get too technical in X’s and O’s, but pace matters from how we play in a practice to carry now into the game.”

Stollings is fully prepared to make the team’s talent noticeable, as she wishes to restore the program and make the Lady Raiders one of the toughest teams in the region again. Stollings said recruitment for the Lady Raiders is one of the most essential components of the team’s success.

Stollings said she believes

Texas has some of the best players and coaches in the nation, resulting in a wide pool of athletes to pick from.

“We intend to do our very, very best to ensure that many of the best players in the state of Texas want to be, want to be Lady Raiders.

Again, we are going to recruit this state at the highest level,” Stollings said.

Stollings has added new players and coaches to the program with hopes of making Lubbock proud again. In preparation for her first year at Tech, Stollings promises to change the team’s culture, playing style and work ethic to accomplish goals that have not been reached in over a decade. Stollings is determined to push the Lady Raider basketball program to the best it can be.

“Our program will be built on discipline, accountability and togetherness.

Owens, Kanas take Tech volleyball by storm

Tw o m e m b e r s o f t h e Texas Tech volleyball team received recognition earlier in the season for their outstanding performances on the court.

Senior Missy Owens set her 3,000th career assist milestone during the game against Iowa State Friday, Sept. 28, according to Tech Athletics. Owens also received both the 2018 Preseason All-Big 12 award, and the 2018 Red Raider Classic MVP award, in August.

Tech coach Tony Graystone said the team was shocked to learn of Owen’s accomplishment.

“We’re all really excited about it,” Graystone said.

“These aren’t things we typically talk about, and we didn’t know this was happening until it happened. Missy is pretty laid

back and doesn’t talk about herself very much, so it’s pretty typical for something like that to happen to her without much around it, but when it does we’re pretty excited for her.”

Last season, Owens was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team after finishing third in the conference with 10.87 assists per set, according to Tech Athletics.

She totaled 1,217 assists during the year, making her 10th on the school’s single season assists list.

Junior defensive specialist Kylie Rittimann also said Owens is humble when talking about her accomplishments.

“We’re all super close,” Rittiman said. “Missy didn’t tell us about the 3,000 assists, but we’re so happy for her. Then Brooke’s (Kanas) the rookie of the week, so that’s wild. We have really humble people, but we get excited for them.”

The second Red Raider to receive conference recognition was freshman outside hitter Brooke Kanas. The native of New Braunfels was dubbed the Big 12 Volleyball Rookie of the Week, according to Tech Athletics. This award comes in response to her breakout week, which helped the Red Raiders to their first 4-0 start in conference play.

Graystone said Kanas has contributed to Tech’s success tremendously in her short time on the team.

“This was a true breakout week for Brooke, and her play was a big reason for our success against Baylor and West Virginia,” Graystone said. “Brooke is off to a great start, and we’re excited about her future as a Red Raider.”

Kanas is also the first Red Raider rookie to be recognized with a Big 12 weekly award since 2014, according to Tech Athlet-

ics. Additionally, the true freshman currently ranks as Tech’s third leading attacker with an average of 2.43 kills per set. As far as Big 12 play last week, her hitting percentage ranks sixth overall, and she averages the ninth most kills per set of anyone in the league.

Kanas believes her adaptability helps the Red Raiders win games.

“I just really want to play and do whatever I need to do to help the team out,” Kanas said. “I just really try to play whatever role I need to and help the team as a whole.

I just build off of everyone else’s great play. That makes me want to play better. Everything just builds on each other and gets you going.”

Up next, the Red Raiders will travel to Fort Worth to take on Texas Christian University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. @TaiteDT

Red Raiders focus on improving first quarter defense during bye week

After starting several games trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Texas Tech football team has placed an emphasis on improving it’s defensive first quarter performance during the team’s bye week.

“We’ve been preaching to start fast, so we have a period of practice called ‘Fast start’ to where we get our juices flowing and make sure everyone has a good start to practice,” redshirt freshman cornerback Adrian Frye said.

Tech has been outscored 83 points to 49 within the first quarter of games played this season, despite outscoring opponents by a commanding 242 points to 155. Tech is outscoring opponents by a 2-to-1 ratio in the second,

third and fourth quarters, but slow starts in the first quarter have lost Tech two games, each one left Tech trying to catch up the rest of the game.

“I thought defensively the second half (against West Virginia) we made some adjustments, played hard, but that first half we were just giving up – you give up 400 yards in a half and 35 points, it’s not going to beat anybody,” Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said.

“We’ll keep working at it, continue to execute at a high level.

That’s what we’ve got to do.”

In both of Tech’s losses against Ole Miss and West Virginia, Tech allowed a combined 52 points in the first quarter, and the Red Raiders failed to retake the lead at any point.

In the second half of games Tech’s defense has greatly improved and the Red Raiders have generally outscored

their opponents, but coaches and players alike have noted that Tech’s defense has to play better early on if Tech plans to accomplish anything over the closing half of conference play.

“I feel like we come out a little relaxed, but we can always come out with the intensity that we show in the second half like we did against Oklahoma State and West Virginia,” Frye said. “I think if we just start off with that same intensity and same mindset we’ll have a better start.”

Frye is noted as one of Tech’s best defenders this season, hauling in a team high three interceptions while playing along the left boundary. Frye’s eight pass breakups also lead the team, along with one of those deflections falling into the hands of teammate Vaughnte Dorsey, so no other defensive

back has helped lead to more turnovers forced than Frye.

Despite Frye’s efforts, Tech has just seven turnovers this season, which is a vast difference from last season’s 29 turnovers. Part of the attraction of a Gibbs lead defense has been turnovers, which helps the offense capitalize on momentum and pull ahead in games. This has not been the case so far, and Frye expects those turnovers to return if the team sticks to the game plan.

“I feel like we are a good defense, we trust Coach (David) Gibbs’ calls, as long as we do our job every play we can be as good as we want to be,” Frye said. “Right now the only tough thing is the slow starts that we’ve been having in the first half. If we can get that knocked out of the way and have the same intensity throughout the game we can be as good as we want to be.” @AustinWattsDT
