Experts discuss Lubbock weather myths, stereotypes

Whether it be the dust storms, floods, cold winters or strong winds, Lubbock is known for its infamous weather across Texas.

Brian Ancell, associate professor in atmospheric sciences at Texas Tech, said there are some common myths about the weather in Lubbock.

“The one I keep hearing is kind of a myth and kind of not,” Ancell said. “It’s when people say, ‘If you don’t like the weather in Lubbock, then wait 10 minutes.’ It’s kind

of true since we’ve got these weather changes, and the arctic cold fronts especially through the winter.”

Every once in a while, throughout the fall, winter or spring, Lubbock can reach 75 degrees for its high temperature on one day, and the next day, the high could be around 30 degrees, he said.

The myth is only true in that sense. Otherwise, it is not much different anywhere else, he said, because other places receive fronts and thunderstorms just like Lubbock does.

“It’s windy, dry and dusty,” Ancell said. “That’s something I hear about Lubbock a lot, and that is definitely true because there’s a lot of agriculture around here, and we’re in an area that is very flat, and there’s not a lot of trees to reduce the wind speeds near the surface.”

Being near the Rocky Mountains is also a factor, he said. The dust storms are especially bad in the spring because there is a lot of wind, and the majority of the fields do not yet have crops in them; it is mainly dirt.

During this time, the weather is also transitioning, so there is a more active weather pattern caused by the jet streams that migrates overhead, he said.

“Without the trees to reduce that much, it’s just a big, flat, windy and open area with lots of dirt to fly around,” Ancell said. “That’s why two, three or four days a week from March through May around here, you can look up in the sky and see

that really gross brown sky.

That’s definitely true.”

Flooding is also another strong stereotype within Lubbock weather, he said, which is a consequence of Lubbock thunderstorms combined with the drainage system in Lubbock.

“Most of the rain we get here in the spring and summer is from thunderstorms,” Ancell said. “Whereas, in the winter, it’s a (steadier) rain.

The thunderstorm rain tends to be fast and heavy. It’s a lot of rain in a short amount of time, and if you don’t have a good drainage system for that, you will get water that sticks around.”

Jody James, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Lubbock, said the weather in Lubbock is volatile.

“In some ways, it can vary more here as far as temperature in the fall or spring or winter,” James said. “We can have days where it starts out in the 70s, and then in the evening, with a front, it’s in the 20s or 30s. In some parts of the United States, that doesn’t happen. I’ve lived several places in Texas and Oklahoma, and I’ve heard the saying ‘If you don’t like the weather, just wait, and it will change.’”

The swift and extreme weather changes are a result of the geographic location of the High Plains and the strong fronts in the fall and winter.

This means, the weather might vary more in Lubbock than other parts of the country, he said.

Lubbock National Weather Service plays a vital role in protecting the properties and lives of citizens throughout West Texas.

Providing timely and reliable weather, water, climate and environmental information has supported the region’s economic and social development.

In terms of wind, rapid weather changes and blowing dust, these weather events can seem to be more frequent in Lubbock because of its location, strong wind patterns and the cultivated farmland that surround the city, he said.

In general, one of the biggest myths from the perspective of the local community is when people think it storms around them, he said.

“People sometimes think

thunderstorms and showers always miss them and go around them,” James said. “I think a lot of that is perception because they’re a tiny point.”

Over time, most areas in a local region get the same amount of rain within a few miles, he said. In one year, an area may miss rain over a short period of time, but as meteorologists measure rainfall in the area for a longer period of time, it will have received the same amount of rainfall as nearby areas.

“Another one is when people say, ‘The weather has never been this blank before,’” James said. “’It’s never been this warm this late in the year. I don’t remember getting this much rain.’”

There are two issues with

this, he said. The first is that Lubbock weather data has been recorded for only a little more than 100 years.

Comparatively speaking, that is a small sample and is not large enough to make broad conclusions.

The second is that the human memory is unreliable for scientific purposes, he said.

“Sometimes, we forget the way different days or different seasons of the past were,” James said. “Sometimes we underplay those in our mind, and just to rely on your memory without hard data is kind of difficult. So, people like to think the weather they’re in now has never been like this before, but that’s usually not the case.” @BrandiAddisonDT

National Wind Institute serves community through research, involvement

The National Wind Institute at Texas Tech conducts research, educates the community and studies the impact of wind on human life and structures.

“The National Wind Institute has a history of 47 years of studying wind. We were created and formed after the 1970 tornado that came through Lubbock, killed many people and did substantial damage to structures,” Anna Thomas, associate director of operations at NWI, said. “The engineers came together: civil and environmental. They started trying to study

those structures, look at the damage and assess how we could better mitigate from these natural diThomas sasters.”

T h e NWI also has research programs, facilities as well as research grants for wind research, according to the NWI website. NWI also has degree programs that range from bachelor’s to doctoral. Research groups associated with NWI include the Atmospheric Science group, Global Laboratory

for Energy Asset Management and Manufacturing, Scaled Wind Farm Technology, Radar Turbine Wake Research and Wind Energy Working Group.

One of the programs provided through the NWI is the Discovery Program, which was established in 2012, according to the website.

The program’s purpose is to aid NWI’s vice president of research in his mission to support faculty members by funding research projects, Thomas said.

Facilities and machines are provided by NWI to support, assist and encourage the continuation of research on both wind hazard mitigation and wind energy, she said.

One of the machines currently being utilized for research is known as VorTECH. “VorTECH is a simulator that can simulate wind flow that mimics tornadoes,” Delong Zuo, associate professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering, said. “We try to use the simulation to understand tornadoes themselves …

We have been able to simulate different types of tornadoes, and we have configured the simulator in different ways.”

Wind is a continuous factor in West Texas, which is why Tech is a perfect fit for the NWI, Zuo, a researcher at VorTECH, said. Research, state-of-the-art

facilities, in-depth academic programs, research groups, scholarly articles, active discussions and informative events over wind make the NWI a world-class institute for Tech students and faculty.

“West Texas is a very unique place to do wind research,” Thomas said. “Specifically, our wind conditions are considered a testbed to many people. Having steady consistent wind, makes it an optimal place for people to want to certify their turbines, test new technology and to really get involved in actual science behind wind hazard mitigation and wind energy.” @DailyToreador

Daily Toreador recognized by CSPA with Gold Circle Awards The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced

the winners from its 34th Gold Circle Awards program, with entries that were produced during the 2016-2017 academic school year. Several staff writers and editors from The Daily Toreador received Golden Circle Awards from the CSPA. Judges recognized a total of 1,080 student journalist with first, second or third place or with certificates of merit for entries deemed deserving of honorable mention in each category, according to the CSPA website.

This year, the categories encompassed entries from

7,093 print-news and magazines publications. Staff members of The DT won a total of 19 print news Gold Circle Awards.

The DT’s multimedia editor Justin Rex, a senior electronic media and communications major from Houston, won first place for Photo Illustration: Portfolio of Word category.

“This is my second Gold Circle award. It's an honor to receive it again, and I hope to keep winning them for the rest of my time at The Daily Toreador,” Rex said.

Texas death row inmate who won at high court gets life term HOUSTON (AP) — A black Texas prison inmate who earlier this year won a U.S. Supreme Court order for a new punishment hearing because his death sentence may have been tainted by references to race has accepted a life prison term plus two 60year sentences.

“After reviewing the evidence and the law, I have concluded that, 22 years after his conviction, a Harris County jury would likely not return another death penalty conviction in a case that has forever been tainted by the indelible specter of race,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said Tuesday.

In return for 54-yearold Duane Buck pleading

guilty to two additional counts of attempted murder, Ogg said her office won’t pursue the death penalty against him.

Buck’s attorneys had tried for years to get federal courts to look into claims that his rights were violated when jurors were told by a defense expert witness that Buck was more likely to be dangerous in the future because he is black.

In Texas death penalty trials, one of the “special issues” jurors must consider when deciding punishment is whether the defendant they’ve convicted would be a future danger.

The high court, in a 6-2 ruling in February, said the race reference in testimony was improper.

Experts compare haboobs, dust storms

Anyone who has lived in Lubbock for a considerable period of time is likely to know what a haboob is. The sky darkens, people look to the north or the east, and focus on what looks like a mountain on the move.

Visually, haboobs can be a color of the darkest black to the brightest orange, and it is made entirely out of dirt.

The weather in the South Plains is generally the same from year to year. According to the National Weather Service’s website, Lubbock weather is dry and arid, with the occasional dust storm, flash flood and snowstorm.

Jenn Daniel, a Texas Tech alumna and a meteorologist at Lubbock’s NWS office, said dust storms and haboobs are different events, but a haboob is a type of dust storm.

“A true dust storm is when you get that sudden onset of dust,” Daniel said. “The sky looks hazy, and we know that is general West Texas weather.

We usually get those storms right after the farmers plow their fields or after harvest, and a strong wind moves through.”

Because dust storms such as

those are common in the area, Daniel said the haboobs are what everyone remembers. One of the more recent ones is the Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, haboob.

“All of a sudden, this big wall of dirt moved across campus. It was impressive,” she said.

The 2011 storm was impressive, former City of Lubbock spokesman Jeff McKito said. Air traffic controllers at Lubbock International Airport grounded planes and had to evacuate the tower to get away from the dust.

Older citizens who had lived through the Dust Bowl in the 1930s were reminded once again of the old days.

Daniel said the huge clouds that seemed to swallow the tiny towns on the prairies during the Dust Bowl period would be considered haboobs. The Black Sunday storm of Sunday, April 14, 1935, one of the largest dust storms on record, would be one.

“The plains were going through a very, very severe drought,” she said. “Farming techniques were not as good as they are now, and people didn’t realize that when you lose your vegetation, there is nothing to hold the soil down. I would hope that we never see that again.”

According to the History

Channel website, the Easter Sunday storm displaced 300 million tons of dirt, and hit the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles hard. People caught in the storm were unable to see, and many had to crawl on the ground to get to shelter. There was a spike in the number of patients sick with “dust pneumonia,” where particles of dirt collect in the lungs.

Daniel said after the Dust Bowl drought was broken in 1939, farmers learned and developed better plowing and irrigation techniques.

“Everything from irrigation to grazing to plowing is for dust mitigation,” Daniel said.

“But the main thing with dust storms like that is you will lose visibility all of a sudden. If you are caught driving on the road in a dust storm or haboob, slow down. Get on the side of the road, and turn off your headlights. The lights will reflect off the dust in the air and it will cause more problems for the people driving behind you.

Move cautiously, and if you are a student walking across campus, get to shelter quickly.

You don’t want to be breathing that dirt in.”

Daniel also said the NWS in Lubbock will start to issue

dust storm warnings at the end of this year.

“We have a new GOES-16 satellite, which will monitor our area for dust storms, and we’ll be able to see the storm in real time,” she said. “We’re currently testing it out, and once operational, it will help us find the storms faster. And, once we see a developing storm, we can send out a warning.”

According to the NOAA, the parent organization of the NWS, the GOES-16 is a geostationary weather satellite that will track thunderstorms, tornadoes and air-quality lev-

els. The new satellite has been used to track Hurricane Maria in real time, and it helped forecasters predict the storm’s landfall after the power went out in Puerto Rico.

“Right now, we still have multiple ways to see a storm coming,” Daniel said. “Spotters from outside of Lubbock will call in and let us know. That is what happened with the October 2011 storm. A thunderstorm buildup in Amarillo collapsed. Air rushed to the ground. It hit the dust. We had a lot of dust as we were in a drought that year. The air picked that up, and it built upon itself.

By the time it reached Lubbock, it had 75 miles per hour winds, and visibility went down to zero.

The storm lasted about 12 hours.”

Daniel also said that as the farmers used their new harvesting techniques, haboobs like the Black Sunday and the October 2011 storms became few and far between.

“The techniques the farmers use now, do help,” she said.

“I don’t know if we would have three days like that again, but we can still have those large haboobs that are daunting. It is definitely a possibility.” @CandiceClarkDT

Lubbock residents talk about driving safely in winter weather

In 2013, The Weather Channel crowned Lubbock as America’s Toughest Weather City, beating out Fairbanks, Alaska, and Fargo, North Dakota.

From dust storms to blizzards, the Lubbock community has faced a variety of weather conditions.

Jordan Johnson, a junior general studies major from McKinney, said he stayed inside his residence hall during the ice storm that happened over 2015 Thanksgiving break. Because it was over the holidays, there were not many people available to fix the heating system.

“It was really cold in my dorm the entire break. I had a heated blanket, so that helped a lot,” Johnson said. “Not to mention I was already upset because I couldn’t go see my family either.”

In 2016, the Texas Department of Transportation reported 6,014 automobile crashes in Lubbock County.

Additionally, there were 528

car accidents in the county that resulted from ice, slush and snow.

Jody James, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lubbock, has worked for the NWS for about 23 years.

The trouble people have while driving in winter road conditions is a combined result of a number of factors, James said.

“You just have a lot of people that move here to go to school that might be from the Houston, Austin, San Antonio (or) Dallas/Fort Worth (areas), where they don’t see as much weather,” James said. “Another thing is we’re on a transition band in terms of precipitation type. So, you might have snow from the Panhandle northward, or you might have rain father downstate, say, from Dallas to Midland.”

Because Lubbock is in the middle of these two precipitation types, James said Lubbock is sometimes in the ice and freezing rain area.

Because of how slick the

roads become freezing rain or ice, they are more dangerous than snow on the roads.

James said it is harder to predict how mild or severe the upcoming winter will be.

However, meteorologists are able to get a better picture of future weather patterns based on El Niño or La Niña.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s website, El Niño and La Niña are the fluctuations in temperature between the ocean and atmosphere in the Pacific.

James said El Niño could cause wet winters with higher precipitation, while La Niña could cause drier winters with less snow.

“If we had (an El Niño or a La Niña), but it’s weaker, there doesn’t seem to be as much of a correlation (between them),” James said.

“Right now, it looks like if we do have a La Niña, it may be weak. So, that doesn’t have as much of an impact, but it could have a slight impact.”

James said he does not suggest people drive on icy

Stolen Rockwell painting returned to family PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Norman Rockwell painting recently returned to a family after it was stolen from their New Jersey home more than 40 years ago is going up for auction.

The 1919 painting, known as “Taking a Break” and “Lazybones,” was returned to members of the Grant family

by FBI art crimes agents in Philadelphia last March. The piece was one of a number of items stolen from the family’s home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, during a June 30, 1976, break-in.

The Grants knew the painting was theirs because it still had damage from where their father had struck it with a pool cue.

Heritage Auctions announced Wednesday the painting will be auctioned Nov. 3 in Dallas, where it is expected to fetch up to $1.5 million. But that pool cue damage isn’t part of the deal.

Aviva Lehmann, the auction house’s director of American Fine Art in New York, said a conservator mended the tell-tale hole and restored the painting.

“We were on the fence on whether to offer it as-is or clean it up,” she said.

After consulting the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, it was decided to restore it and make it look as fresh as possible.

“It looks like it was painted yesterday,” Lehmann said.

“The family gasped, it was so startling in a very good way.

It literally looks like it was

brought back to life.”

Robert Grant was playing pool at a friend’s house in 1954 when he drew his cue back a bit too dramatically, damaging one of four Norman Rockwell paintings in the room.

In a “you break it, you buy it” moment, Grant paid the pal $50 for the artwork, which depicts a boy sleeping on the ground, his dozing dog’s head in his lap and the hoe he should be using for chores perched between his knees.

For Grant’s children, being

reunited with the painting was emotional, because it meant so much to their late parents.

John Grant said he and his five siblings decided it made the most sense to auction the painting, since no one really felt safe having something that valuable just hanging in their home.

“If my dad was still alive it would be back on the wall,” he said. “It was the family jewel, no doubt. It would have been the perfect ending to a really long story.”

Second amendment rights difficult to simplify

I

bought my first gun when I was 19 while working at Academy Sports. I used my discount to buy a Ruger 10/22 long rifle.

I could not tell you exactly what caused me to buy my gun. I was still living with my parents in San Antonio while I went to UTSA, and the closest place I could shoot my .22-caliber rifle was at an outdoor range 20 minutes away.

I bought my gun in 2012, a time when gun sales would soon reach a record high after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting later that December. The days after the shooting led to a shortage in ammunition, even in the store I worked at.

Fear of gun legislation after the tragedy led people to buy ammunition by the cartload. Even .22-caliber ammo, known for being the cheapest and most available, was stocked behind the counter because of limited supply.

For most of us, the shooting was an event that did not affect us directly, but it was devastating to hear happen. I didn’t want to believe someone was capable of doing that: someone my age taking a gun into an elementary school and killing innocent children. I could recall feeling that same powerless, afraid feeling I had as a kid whose home was broken into, but I could not imagine what it must have been like for the children or families affected by the event.

I did not think about my gun when I found out. It did not occur to me then that I should stock up on ammo or buy another gun in response to a mass shooting.

Our right to own a gun is derived from the Second

Amendment of the Constitution which states “A wellregulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

There has long been a debate about how exactly this should be interpreted, with the debate split into two views. One side focuses on the latter part of the sentence, as an individual’s right to have firearms. The other side focuses on the beginning of the sentence, as a right for the purpose of service in a militia.

In the few cases dealing with the Second Amendment since its conception, the Supreme Court had sided with the militia view, expressly stating in U.S. v. Miller in 1939 the Second Amendment was limited to safeguarding possession of firearms for militia service.

But, District of Columbia v. Heller in 2008 set the stage

for our modern understanding of an individual’s right to own firearms, and McDonald v. Chicago in 2010 made that understanding applicable to all states. The emphasis in these cases is the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own a firearm specifically to protect self, home and family.

So, our right, granted by the Constitution and interpreted by the Supreme Court, does not guarantee individuals an absolute right to bear arms. As it stands, the Second Amendment specifically protects an individual’s right to own a firearm in self-defense.

The court reiterated that the government can regulate firearms, citing the ability to restrict guns in locations such as airports or schools. Additionally, the government can regulate who may possess firearms, such as restricting gun ownership from prior felons

or individuals with a history of mental illness.

The Constitution guarantees a right to a firearm for self-defense. Knowing this right is preserved, it is confusing as to why the law makes gun owners so angry, dismissive and critical of any talk of gun legislation.

I own a gun because firearms were a big interest of my best friend growing up.

Xbox, going to the movies and cycling were also interests I shared with my best friend.

I own a gun because I enjoyed spending time with my father on a hunting trip.

Going over for dinner, watching football and phone calls are also things I enjoy with my father.

And I own a gun because I was afraid once. And I was afraid again when my family experienced our second break-in, in a different home in 2013. It was the same kind of daytime robbery, only this time I was return-

ing home from my college class. My gun was tucked safely under my bed, and my other possessions were either stolen or scattered across the floor.

I don’t know what it is like to feel like guns are a passion, a family tradition or even an absolute right. I don’t know what it is like to have my identity as a Texan tied to my ability to own a gun.

I do know what it’s like to be afraid and how easily that fear can turn to anger.

It is the same feeling we all shared after hearing about what happened in Las Vegas.

The first thing I feel when an event like the Las Vegas shooting occurs, is that powerless fear and anger that these things happen to us. Those feelings should not be the same emotions we feel when we talk about gun legislation. @DailyToreador

Interpretations of freedom difficult to come to terms with

e are all entitled to our own opinions. We are all entitled to our own beliefs. We are all entitled to speak up for what we believe in. That is a part of freedom.

Today, it seems we are not allowed to have different opinions. There is a mindset that all beliefs that are not ours are ignorant, and others should not stand up for what

they believe in because some people do not agree.

This mindset is a part of oppression.

The American flag is a symbol for something much greater than red, white and blue fabric. The flag repre-

sents the time and lives our military personnel continue to sacrifice for our freedom.

Some might deem it respectful to stand with one’s hand over one’s heart to honor those brave women and men. However, some people may think the United States should honor those men and women by also utilizing that hard-earned freedom and

demanding it for everyone.

As the flag flies, it creates a narrative. To some, they see a story of war and lives lost.

Others may flashback to a folded flag in memory of a fallen soldier. Some may simply experience a sensation of pride and freedom. However, there are Americans who see a very different narrative.

Consider this: Kneeling dur-

ing the national anthem is not strictly a jab at military personnel, or even the president.

Instead, it is a demonstration that those individuals do not believe the flag is representing a certain meaning at that point in time. Those Americans might not see the flag with the same emotion and meaning that others do. They might not feel the

freedom that was – and still is – fought for courageously.

They may see inequality, fear, hatred and division.

We are the people. We have to demand freedom and equality. We cannot let the media divide us. We cannot be blind. We can make a difference. We are Americans.

The comments from lawmakers including the No. 2 Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, marked a surprising departure from GOP lawmakers’ general antipathy

“If somebody can essentially convert a semi-automatic weapon by buying one of these and utilizing it and cause the kind of mayhem and mass casualties that we saw in Las

Vegas, that’s something of obvious concern that we ought to explore,” Cornyn told reporters.

“I own a lot of guns and as a hunter and sportsman I think that’s our right as Americans, but I don’t understand the use of this bump stock and that’s another reason to have a hearing.”

Cornyn later said he’d spoken with Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, and that Grassley was interested in convening a hearing.

WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Rebuffing the Trump administration, a federal judge on Wednesday ordered the Interior Department to reinstate an Obama-era regulation aimed at restricting harmful methane emissions from oil and gas production on federal lands.

The order by a judge in San Francisco came as the Interior Department moved to delay the rule until 2019, saying it was too burdensome to industry. The action followed an

earlier effort by Interior to postpone part of the rule set to to take effect next year.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Laporte of the Northern District of California said Interior had failed to give a “reasoned explanation” for the changes and had not offered details why an earlier analysis by the Obama administration was faulty.

She ordered the entire rule reinstated immediately.

The rule, finalized last November, forces energy companies to capture

Tech student expands worldview with trip to Iraq

Honors student Asher George was given a unique opportunity in the spring to travel halfway across the world.

The senior microbiology major from Mesquite journeyed to the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq as part of Operation H.O.P.E., a local, nonprofit organization that provides medical care, education, food and other resources to foreign countries in need.

On the trip, George said he observed American and Kurdish physicians providing assistance to refugees as well as the Kurdish people.

George said he first got involved with Operation H.O.P.E on a regular Sunday morning at church where he met the organization’s founder, Dr. John Thomas.

“Dr. Thomas is a general surgeon and does medical missions, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do,” he said. “In further talks with him, he realized ‘Why not help out a student at Texas Tech to see if this is really his calling?’”

Toward the end of May, George said he spent a week and a half in the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq recording and observing the hospital setting.

He said he worked with

Kurdish medical personnel, watched surgeries and actively engaged with surgeons in treating patients.

“I also got to see the American physicians consult with the Kurdish people, whether they were refugees or people that lived in the Kurdistan region,” he said. “The Kurdish people would come to where we were staying at, seeking assistance and guidance from these physicians.”

Many of the Kurds know English, George said. With no language barrier to hinder them, it was easy for American and Kurdish doctors to communicate and pass on information.

However, differences in American and Kurdish cultures were sometimes difficult to approach, and to see the doctors overcome the cultural barriers was powerful, he said.

“This is something most Americans don’t have the chance to do,” he said, “To be blessed with such an opportunity opened my eyes to see that there’s a lot more going on outside of the bubble that I live in here in Texas.”

Since 2011, more than 2 million refugees and internally displaced persons have come to Kurdistan, forming 28 percent of the region’s population, according to The Kurdish Project’s website.

and teach one another.

Non-government organizations and other refugee camps are working to open secondary and primary schools for children in these refugee camps, he said.

“Seeing that education is a stepping stool for them shows me that it’s important for us as students to not take for granted what we have at Texas Tech,” George said.

“What starts here does change the world.”

George said he is still a part of Operation H.O.P.E and plans to take more trips with the organization

in the future. He wants to get involved in global health and global surgery because there is a need for this type of empowerment in a lot of countries around the world.

“There’s a big push in Haiti right now, one of the poorest countries on Earth,” he said, “and to see a local organization in Lubbock taking part in empowering the people of that country tells me that there’s a lot more we can do around the world, and Haiti and other regions are just a start.”

In addition to Operation H.O.P.E, George said

he keeps himself busy as a member of Mortar Board, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Betta Kappa, Mentor Tech, the board of advisers for the American Medical Student Association and as a community adviser at Hulen Residence Hall.

All of these organizations revolve around the idea of serving others, he said, and it is only the beginning of what his future might hold.

After graduating in spring 2018, George plans to spend a year working with refugee organizations or traveling to other countries to teach English with the Fulbright Program. Next, he said he hopes to enroll in medical school in fall 2019.

George said he would love to see more Tech students study abroad and engage in mission trips because it will broaden their worldviews.

“There’s a saying, ‘The larger one’s worldview, the smaller your opinion of it.

The smaller your worldview, the larger your opinion of it,’” he said. “I think the smaller our opinions are, the more easily we can create and build bridges with people of other backgrounds, which is important in understanding how to deal with problems on a global level.” @DailyToreador

But in a place where normal is sometimes hard to define, little else seemed amiss. This is a city built on adult fun, where on any given day several hundred thousand visitors are looking for a good time.

Barnes applies taekwondo to football

Barnes is from Loganville, Georgia, and went to Grayson High School, where he became a three-star prospect by ESPN and 247Sports, according to Tech Athletics.

He also helped Grayson win the state championship in 2011 while recording nine sacks and 15 tackles for loss in his senior season.

However, before high school, he trained in taekwondo at Charles Minter Tae Kwon Do Karate, a martial arts program based in Georgia, for five years until he was 13, Barnes said. Now a black belt, he said the discipline, being able to put himself in good positions and staying on balance were helpful attributes he translated well into football.

“Just going through taekwondo, they teach you how to not only just be disciplined in training and doing your exercises correctly, but also in your mind,” Barnes said. “Instead of some people just going out and not really having a goal or set objectives for the day, it taught me that I need to

The Texas Tech football team has many defensive assets who have made an impact on this year’s roster.

In his junior season, senior defensive lineman Zach Barnes developed on the field and recorded his first solo tackle against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, Sept.

3, 2016, according to Tech Athletics. Despite suffering an injury in the game against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 17, 2016, Barnes tallied 11 tackles that year, of which seven were solo tackles.

Now a senior, Barnes is on track to top his numbers from last year as he has already recorded seven total tackles, five solo tackles, two assists and two quarterback hurries, according to Tech Athletics.

Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury has taken notice in Barnes’ improvements on the field, and said Barnes has taken on a leadership role as an upperclassman.

“Zach is doing a nice job. Moving to more of an inside-type player this y e a r, ” K i n g s b u r y s a i d .

have a goal in every single thing that I do.”

For Barnes, his favorite moments of taekwondo were the competitions and sparring matches, he said.

He said his favorite move is the legendary martial artist Bruce Lee’s flying sidekick, and his favorite MMA fighter is Conor McGregor.

Barnes said it was his parents who introduced him to taekwondo to keep him active and teach him discipline.

His father played for the San Diego Charges in the NFL as a defensive tackle before playing for Alabama State, according to Tech Athletics.

Seeing his father compete at the highest level resonated with Barnes. He said his father has always been someone he has admired and strived to be like. “(He was) my hero growing up, even before I started playing football,” Barnes said. “I wanted to be just like him. I call him after every game, and we talk about the game and just about life. He’s a real good pop. He’s a real good man.”

Tech throwback ticket options available Long awarded Big 12 Golfer of Month The Texas Tech men’s basketball program announced ticket options for the throwback game against Rice at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.

Red Raider Club members will get the first chance at getting tickets starting Monday, Oct. 9, followed by the general public on Monday, Oct. 16, according to a Tech Athletics news release.

From a basketball standpoint, I'm a lifer. I set out to do different things this year. Accept things I wanted to do. Did a bunch of broadcasting and had a lot of fun with that."

And then came the job offer. Before he accepted it, he wanted to talk his wife, Mary.

"She said, 'You have to do this,'" the 62-year-old Hughes said. "I then went to my son and daughter and they said, 'You got to do this.' It just fit. It became something that wasn't a really hard decision. I had the backing of the people who mattered to me."

Hughes has coached more WNBA games (524) than anyone in league history and is 237-287 in his career. That's the third most wins in the league. He won WNBA Coach of the Year twice, garnering the honor in 2001 when he was with Cleveland and then again in 2007 in San Antonio.

He told the AP in 2016 that he was retiring to spend more time with his family and to watch his son play basketball for Air Force.

Hughes will be able to do that still as well as spend time with his four grandchildren.

penburg, who was Seattle's interim coach after the team fired Jenny Boucek on Aug. 10. Kloppenburg helped guide the Storm to the playoffs as the No. 8 seed where they lost in the opening round to Dallas.

Hughes will just coach the Storm as team president Alisha Valavanis is also the general manager.

"You've seen his resume and you've seen his track record in the WNBA," Valavanis said. "He's won a lot of games and is very experienced in the WNBA. Seemed like the right fit. His visions where we'd take Storm basketball were really exciting — where we are and where we want to go."

Seattle has a solid nucleus for Hughes to work with led

They have a few key free agents like Crystal Langhorne they'll have to figure out what to do with.

Over the course of his coaching career in Cleveland, Charlotte and San Antonio, Hughes has usually had to rebuild. He was excited for the chance to start with a strong foundation in place.

"They are farther along than any team I've had," Hughes said. "Talk about Sue, Stewie and Jewell and some pieces I saw. I liked the chemistry I saw, they imitated what I believe in.

There is work that needs to be done, but they are farther along in the process."

Red Raider offense looks to bounce back

After a strong start to the season with threestraight victories, the Texas Tech Red Raiders suffered their first loss in a close match up to a topranked opponent.

Tech hosted No. 15 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Jones AT&T Stadium and fell to the Cowboys by one touchdown, 41-34, according to Tech Athletics.

In the loss to the Cowbo y s , Te c h c o a c h Kl i ff Kingsbury said it was the offense that failed to finish on the field, but the team knows the potential they have to improve.

“I think they just understand how good they can be, more than anything,” Kingsbury said.

“We were right there. We felt like we just ran out of time, and that’s a good sentiment to have.”

Senior quarterback Nic Shimonek was 29 for 46 for a pass completion rate of 63 percent and one interception, according to Tech Athletics. He threw for 330 total yards and struggled in the pocket as he was sacked.

Despite the outcome against Oklahoma State,

Kingsbury said Shimonek is the kind of athlete with the mentality to bounce back from a loss.

“He fought and played hard. I thought he hung in there, made some nice throws, made some plays when he had to,” Kingsbury said. “And he’s a fighter, he’s a competitor.”

Shimonek has created offensive chemistry with multiple players, including senior wide receiver Dylan Cantrell who is second on the team with 296 receiving yards and four total touchdowns, according to Tech Athletics.

Cantrell said Shimonek is the type of quarterback who can come back from a loss and lead the team to further success.

“Great leader, just a guy like that, like I’ve said before, nothing phases him,” Cantrell said. “He’s ready to get out there that next series, and it takes a lot, he puts a lot on himself. That’s the guy he is. He puts a lot on his shoulders and tries to do everything he can to put us in a position to win.”

“You really can’t worry about it. It was very frustrating, but at the end of the day, a loss is a loss,” Thomas said. “You’ve just got to come back the next day, ready to practice with the next opponent.”

After competing in four games this season, Cantrell said there are negatives and positives to take away from each game. He said one focal point for the Red Raider offense is getting off to a solid start.

“We’ve done some good things. There is still a lot

we need to get better at,” Cantrell said. “One thing is we have to start faster. For some reason, we have been starting kind of slow, but once we get into a rhythm and get going, we do well, but we have to start faster.”

The expectation for Tech’s offense has yet to be met in the past two games,

Kingsbury said. Opponents having a strong defensive unit is one reason breaking up the Red Raider offense.

Oklahoma State stopped the Red Raider run game by only allowing 72 total rushing yards and an average of 2.1 yards per run, according to Tech Athletics.

“You know, we had some good things, dropped a couple touchdowns, missed a few things that we should have hit, obviously both weeks,” Kingsbury said.

“But, yeah, I think you have to credit those defenses as well. We just got to execute at a high level when you’re playing those type of defenses.”

Another focus for the Red Raider offense is maintaining composure on the field and sticking to the game plan, Cantrell said.

One way to achieve Tech’s offensive goals this season is leading by example.

“I think we’ve just got to focus on doing the little things right, making routine plays, not trying to do too much. Just staying calm,” Cantrell said. “We have a lot of guys with experience, and that’s where that veteran leadership needs to step in.” @ABoutwellDT

Coach Dana Holgorsen isn’t fretting too much about his defense because he knows what it’s done over the long haul. The Mountaineers allowed the fewest rushing yards among Big 12 teams in 2015 and was third last year despite having several new starters.

“It ain’t scheme because we’ve been pretty good against the run these past two years,” he said. “We’ve got to do a better job up front of holding gaps.”

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will make a joint bid to host soccer ’s centenary World Cup in 2030, the presidents of the three South American countries said on Wednesday.

Bidding is not due to open for at least another four years, but the South American bid is already expected to face tough competition for the hosting rights of a tournament that will likely feature 48 teams.

European soccer federations will be eligible to bid, with an option that could unite England and other British members of FIFA, while China is also expected to express interest in hosting the tournament.

“If they give us a chance, we’re going to be great hosts,” Argentine President Mauricio Macri said during the announcement at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires.

“We’re going to organize a great World Cup because there’s plenty of soccer passion in this region of the world.”

Macri said the three countries are looking into “six or eight” stadiums in Argentina and “two or three” stadiums in Paraguay and Uruguay.

Uruguay staged the first World Cup in 1930 and had long been expected to seek hosting rights with Argentina.

Wickenheiser aspires to leave legacy

As the 2017 season nears the end, the Texas Tech Red Raider soccer team is aiming for a playoff run halfway through Big 12 Conference play.

In Tech’s eight wins, one factor in success has been Tech’s lockdown defense.

In six of the eight wins, Tech’s defense has held opponents scoreless, according to Tech Athletics.

A notable contributor to that defense has been junior midfielder Carly Wickenheiser, who has controlled the center of the field for the Red Raiders this season. “(Wickenheiser) is our main person in the middle,” sophomore midfielder Jordie Harr said. “She gets most of our 50-50 balls.”

Wickenheiser has played for the Red Raiders this season, while starting every game that she has appeared in, according to Tech Athletics.

“It’s the whole team's responsibility to keep the other team from scoring,” Wickenheiser said. “It starts from the forwards pressing, then goes all the way through the midfield, and we try to block them getting it to their forwards, and our defense is great at picking up their forwards.”

One of Wickenheiser ’s most impactful plays of the season came in the second game of the year as Tech

faced San Francisco. In that matchup, Wickenheiser scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to secure the victory, 1-0, in double overtime, according to Tech Athletics.

“It’s not unique that Carly scored,” Tech coach Tom Stone said after the game. “She’s always looking to score.”

Wickenheiser is in her third season as a Red Raider and her second season as a starter. In her freshman year, she saw time as a rotational player, recording two goals in the 2015 season, according to Tech Athletics.

In her sophomore season as a Red Raider, Wickenheiser started in 15 matches, while playing in all 20 matches for the Red Raiders.

“I didn’t really know too much about Tech when I first came down here. As soon as I got down here, I thought Tech was really cool. I loved the coaching staff,” Wickenheiser said. “I just thought they were awesome and so helpful, I just knew they were the kind of coaches I wanted to be around to take my game to the next level.”

Wickenheiser said she can trace her love for soccer back to her youth because she has been playing the sport ever since she was a young girl.

She also had a successful high school career in her hometown of St. Louis.

“I really started when my mom gave me a ball. I loved it. I would just dribble

around the house all the time. Once I got a ball, I never let it go,” Wickenheiser said. “I played all the sports growing up, but no other sport compared to soccer and the love I had for soccer. Just the full-team camaraderie is so special, and I think it is such an awesome game.”

As one of the starting upperclassmen on the team, Wickenheiser said she has embraced her role as a mentor to the younger players on the team and sees the potential in her freshman teammates to be leaders in the future.

“I still look around for the seniors who were here when we were freshmen.

Since the freshmen came in, we realized this was our role. It's our job now to teach the younger generation, so they can continue to teach the new girls that come in,” Wickenheiser said. “It’s been a learning process for us and a learning process for them, and I think it’s been really fun and really exciting, and we get better every day.”

Following last season’s turnout — as the team stumbled in Big 12 play with seven conference losses because of injuries, among other obstacles — Wickenheiser said she is looking ahead with her teammates to a better season finish this year.

“I think we have really high aspirations for this team,” Wickenheiser said.

Just with a few conference games left, we just need to get as many wins as possible.”

With playoffs just around the corner, Wickenheiser said she is focused and ready to compete this year. Tech only has five regular season games left on the schedule, and each game gets the team closer to a Big 12 Championship appearance.

“We have Baylor this Friday, (Oct. 6), and they are a hard team,” Wickenheiser

said. “We need as many wins in the next few games we have, and as many points as possible. For us, we are really focusing on one game at a time and taking care of the game that's in front of us.”

Along with Wickenheiser in the midfield is junior Jordan Duke, who said the Red Raiders are ready for each opponent and have confidence in not only Wickenheiser but also the entire team.

“Like Carly said, we need to focus on one game at a time,” Duke said. “I think we’ve done a lot of focusing on how they play and how we

play, we need to be ready for anything they throw at us, and I think we’ll do really good.”

Wickenheiser said there are high hopes for Tech’s team this season, but she hopes the future teams and generations she is helping mentor will carry on Tech’s winning legacy.

“All the stuff that we are doing right now, yes we are doing it for this team and for this season,” Wickenheiser said. “But, we are also doing it for the future generations, and for the future Texas Tech teams that come along, because we want them to succeed just as much as we do.” @AustinWattsDT

Lynx capture 4th title win over Sparks MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sylvia Fowles had 17 points and broke her own WNBA Finals record by grabbing 20 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Lynx to their fourth championship in seven years with an 85-76 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

Maya Moore had 18 points and 10 rebounds and hit a huge runner with 26 seconds to play, Lindsay Whalen had 17 points and eight assists and Seimone Augustus added 14 points, six assists and six boards to help the Lynx move into a tie with the Houston Comets for most titles in league history.

"I think every time you do this, it gets a little more special because it gets a little harder," Whalen said. "And more meaningful because you know it's not easy. It's not something we try to take for granted ever."

Candace Parker had 19 points, 15 rebounds and five assists for the Sparks, who were looking to become the first repeat champions in 15 years. Chelsea Gray had 15 points and eight assists, but Nneka Ogwumike fouled out with 5:29 to play and finished with 11 points. Los Angeles

turned it over 17 times.

With a team that had the makings of a new dynasty bearing down on it, the Lynx responded to reassert their own. They have been in the finals in six of the last seven years and now find themselves in the company of Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and the Comets that dominated the league's early days.

"They wanted to take their place next to the Houston Comets," coach Cheryl Reeve said. "So they did it."

The game the Lynx rule now is bigger, faster and deeper and the proud core of Moore, Rebekkah Brunson, Augustus and Whalen have had to earn everything they've accomplished. They led by 12 in the third quarter, but Los Angeles pushed right back, trimming the deficit to four at the start of the fourth.

Reeve has always regretted not getting Fowles more involved late in Game 5 a year ago, and they made sure to force-feed their MVP this time around to close the door.

After Parker's 3 cut Minnesota's lead to 68-64, Fowles corralled a loose ball and finger-rolled it in just ahead of the shot clock buzzer for a

70-64 lead.

The Lynx looked to have things in control when Augustus's jumper gave them a 79-67 lead that lasted until Jantel Lavender's layup with 90 seconds to go. But Riquna Williams hit two free throws and Sims had two steals for layups, one of which she converted for a three-point play to pull Los Angeles within 79-76 with 35 seconds to go.

"We're not a team and I'm not a person to make excuses," Sparks coach Brian Agler said. "We just didn't do what we needed to do to keep her off the glass."

But Moore responded with a tough pull-up in the lane and Fowles, who was also named MVP of the series, hit a couple of foul shots to ice it.

A rivalry this tight just had to come down to a Game 5, and Minnesota forced it with an 80-69 victory Sunday in Los Angeles. The Sparks and Lynx went five games last year before Los Angeles won on a last-second put-back from Ogwumike.

The previous 12 meetings between these two teams, starting with Game 1 of last year's finals, had a cumulative score of 908-908.
