even weeks into the college football season, Texas Tech finally has its first Big 12 Conference home game. The 2014 season has already seen injuries to several major players, upsets of top-ranked teams, and most of all, a shake up of who’s at the top and who’s living in the cellar of the conference. Some teams, who formally dominated the conference like the threeloss Texas Longhorns, are in the midst of rebuilding seasons. Other teams like the still-new Texas Christian Horned Frogs, who just upset Oklahoma and jumped 14 spots in the Associated Press poll, are moving in to take top conference spots. The Art Briles-led Baylor Bears are still leading the conference behind the offensive firepower of quarterback Bryce Petty and wide receiver Levi Norwood, and Iowa State and Kansas are still unable to escape the bottom of the barrel, but this year seems to be a turning point for the storied Big 12 Conference.

Baylor

Baylor is now one of two undefeated teams that remain in the Big 12 Conference. The 2013 Big 12 Offensive Player of the year, Bryce Petty, has battled a back injury throughout this season, but the offense did not miss a beat with sophomore quarterback Seth Russell filling in. After running for 881 yards last season, sophomore Shock Linwood is currently second in the conference with 449 rushing yards and is tied for the lead with eight rushing touchdowns. The Baylor offense is the highest scoring offense in the Big 12, with 51 points per game, and allowing the fewest points per game at 12.4. The Bears are racking up 591 total yards per game and have their eyes on a second-straight Big 12 championship and the college football playoff.

Oklahoma

After being upset by Texas Christian in Fort Worth last weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners still have a chance to win the Big 12, but the margin for error for the rest of the season is small. Sophomore quarterback Trevor Knight has thrown for 1,374 yards and five touchdowns through five games, but has completed 54.5 percent of his passes. Freshman running back Samaje Perine has had success running the ball so far this season and is leading the Big 12 in rushing yards and is tied for the most touchdowns. The Sooners are running the ball for over 200 yards per game this season. Their defense is plus seven on turnovers for the year as they have forced opponents to commit 14 turnovers. Sophomore cornerback Zack Sanchez had grabbed four interceptions this season. Oklahoma and Baylor play each other on Nov. 8 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Kansas State

Coach Bill Snyder has once again resurrected the Kansas State football program. The Wildcats are 4-1 this season with their only loss coming against now No. 2 Auburn, and as with all Snyder teams, there is not really a question of what the Wildcats game plan is going to be. Kansas State averages 189 rushing yard on the ground per game, and are led by one of only two quarterbacks in the top ten in rushing in the Big 12 Conference, Jake Waters. The Wildcats also have a strong wide receiver presence, Tyler Lockett to keep opposing teams from loading the box. The senior wide receiver not only ranks No. 5 in receiving yards per game in the Big 12, but he is also the conference leader in punt return average. Waters and Lockett combine to give Kansas State a very potent offense, and the lack of mistakes by the Wildcats could place them near the top of the conference at the end of the season.

Oklahoma State

The No. 16 Cowboys started off the season strong, hanging with the reigning national champions and No. 1 ranked Florida State Seminoles. Although they lost their starting quarterback, J.W. Walsh, early in the season to foot surgery and he will be out for at least six to eight weeks, backup quarterback Daxx Garman has led Oklahoma State to four straight victories and ranks fourth in the Big 12 in total offense. The Cowboys have moved away from their pass-heavy offense of the past with senior running back Desmond Roland averaging 76 rushing yards per game so far this season. While the Oklahoma State offense is more balanced this year than in years past, Garman will have to work through his inexperience this year before the Cowboys are able to consistently win over top conference teams like Baylor and Oklahoma.

TCU

Texas Christian defeated No. 4 Oklahoma at home on Saturday, its fourth win over a top-five team since 2010, according the Big 12 website. The Horned Frogs defense returned eight starters this season and is ranked second in the conference, allowing 279 yards and 13.5 points per game. They have limited opponents’ offenses on third downs and have allowed them to convert only 28 percent of the time, the best in the conference. Senior linebacker Paul Dawson has taken on the leadership role of the defense and is near the top of the Big 12 in tackles. Junior quarterback Trevone Boykin has completed the transition from wide receiver and is gaining 359 total yards per game, including 65 yards on the ground. Texas Christian plays Baylor on the road Saturday.
