he annual Homecoming Kick-Off was hosted from noon to 1 p.m. Monday by the Tech Activities Board at the North Plaza of the Student Union Building. Last year’s Homecoming King Ben Sharp announced the names of the Royalty Candidates nominated for this year’s Homecoming court.

Sydney Notman, Homecoming Kick-Off and Rowdy Raider Rally chair for Tech Activities Board, said the Kick-Off is the first event of the Homecoming week. The purpose of the KickOff is to get everyone excited for the upcoming events. “My favorite event of this week is bonfire which is happening on Friday night,” Notman

said. “A lot of alumni and locals go, and it is just a really great moment to be part of the Texas Tech community.” Homecoming is a way for the alumni and students to come back together and celebrate Tech, she said. The events during the week are free and fun, so everybody is welcome to come. Farah Mechref, a junior biochemistry major from Lubbock, said what she likes the most about Homecoming is the school spirit. For a whole week, Tech students get together and show their pride. “A lot of times we go around this campus and we say we are Red Raiders, but I think that for this week we really prove it,” Mechref said. “We show ourselves and the student body who we are as Red Raiders and what actually means to have that pride in us.” Mechref said she is looking forward to the Student Organization Sing event at 8 p.m. today in the United Supermarkets Arena. Mechref wants to see what the organizations have come up with in terms of creativity and skills.
