n Oct. 3, 1925 Texas Technical College opened its doors to a crowd larger than what administrators ever expected. With more than 900 students enrolled in 1925, Texas Tech now enrolls more than 36,000 students across multiple campuses.

was then known as Texas Technological College, it was a surprise to most people that someone would choose to go to a small town out in the middle of nowhere, Lynn Whitfield, university archivist for the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, said. “In the 1920s when Texas Tech opened, they were hoping for maybe 300 or so students. Well, over 900 showed up,” Whitfield said. “So the first day of classes we were already short on facilities, short on teaching space, we had low salaries, we didn’t have enough faculty.” After the first day of classes in October 1925, administration found there was not much space to do anything, Whitfield said. Luckily for the college, then Texas Governor Ma Ferguson continued her administrative support of the college by way of more legislative funds. During the first 30 years of the campus’s parturition, it was mostly a wide open plain not separated by streets or sidewalks, Whitfield said. There were no street lights, and walking from one part to another was always a toss-up.
