Hell’s Gate urban legend mystifies residents

Behind the City of Lubbock Cemetery, one comes across an old train trestle that has become notorious from local folklore.

Some of the rumors stemming from the area are related to lynching from the segregation era and the Native American tribes that used to inhabit Lubbock. Because of this, the train trestle symbolizes a crossroad between the physical world and the spirit realm of existence, Billy Fisher, director of the Lubbock Ghost Investigation Society, said.

“The cemetery itself is a peaceful location,” Fisher said. “Its inhabitants seem to be aware of their predicament, and positive energy flows throughout. Some nights it seems like more of a party than anything.”

However, on the other side of the cemetery’s wrought-iron fencing lies a more sinister energy, he said. Figures, apparitions and spiritual orbs are said to have been seen just be-

neath the towering old train trestle.

If thrill-seekers are out to find a nefarious presence at Hell’s Gate, more than likely that is just what they will get, Fisher said.

A mysterious manifestation known locally as “the hunter” has allegedly been seen in the woods surrounding the region, stalking passerby and watching their moves closely.

“The hunter is a very territorial spirit. He doesn’t seem to like people poking about in his domain,” Fisher said. “He’s there to ward off anyone who is up to no good.”

Other alleged spiritual sightings include two young girls, one with fair hair and the other with dark hair, lurking about in the foliage near an old loading dock, he said. These girls are rumored to have been molested and killed nearby and still haunt the region to this day.

The forest itself is home to numerous spectral inhabitants, Fisher said. Orbs of light are reported to show up in pictures, and shadowy figures have been seen by those who dare to investigate Hell’s

“If you approach respectfully and let them know you mean no harm, you’re more likely to come across a hint of an apparition,” Anita Fisher, president of the Lubbock Ghost Investigation Society and a spectral medium, said.

“We’ve come across so much

spiritual activity in that area, it seems to be a hub of otherworldly energy.”

A medium is an individual who has the necessary instincts and senses to see and interact with spirits in another realm of existence, Anita Fisher said. Often voice recorders

are used to detect spirits attempting to communicate to living beings.

The City of Lubbock Cemetery is more than 124 years old and has more than 60,000 graves, making it the thirdlargest cemetery in the state of Texas, according the City of Lubbock website. The cem-

etery is the final resting place of some of Lubbock’s most famous residents, including Dirk West and Buddy Holly.

“What we do at (Lubbock Ghost Investigation Society) is go out and investigate areas that have a high concentration of spiritual energy,” Anita Fisher said. “All of our services are confidential and free of charge.”

Anytime the members of the ghost investigation society inspect the cemetery, they are pleasantly surprised by their interactions.

“Many of the spirits are still here because they choose to, either they feel like they have unfinished business or they don’t want to move on just yet,” Anita Fisher said. “By being upfront about what you’re looking for and respectful of their existence, you can have a pleasant ghost hunting experience.” @ReeceNationsDT

Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec spoke to the press in his office Wednesday regarding the groundbreaking of the new Texas Tech campus in Costa Rica.

Tech to establish this campus in Costa Rica with the company Promerica, Schovanec said. So, in the two years that both entities have been working on this project, Tech was able to expand its brand even more.

For the country, Tech’s independent campus is a welcome addition because

Costa Rica has one of the highest literacy rates in Central America, he said.

It also invest nearly 10 percent of its gross domestic product to education.

“They see education as a way to elevate the social and economic status,” Schovanec said. “There are many multinational corporations there, and the

point that has been made to us was as we began these conversations that was emphasized was they had an unmet need for a trained workforce.”

Although Tech has a rather heavy international presence, Schovanec said, when dealing with ex pansions like this, it is important to not spread the brand of the university too thin.

The main thing that separates this part of the university is this facility will be self-sustaining, according to the release. That means that unlike Tech’s study-abroad programs, there will be no host facility, and the Costa Rica campus will function all on its own.

“This fall we have international students from more than 100 countries, with 3,100 international students. So, this is part of the continual evolution of Texas Tech as a world-class institution with an increasing global presence,” Schovanec said. “But we have to be managed in how we proceed, we can’t have too many irons in the fire.” @MichaelCantuDT

The groundbreaking ceremony for Tech’s first international campus was hosted on Monday in Costa Rica, where the president and vice president of Costa Rica attended. All the politicians who attended acknowledged Tech as a world-class institution that is plugged in internationally, Schovanec said.

“We are delighted Texas Tech University has selected Costa Rica as the site to open a campus for students in the region,” Luis Guillermo Solis, president of Costa Rica, said in a Tech news release. “This represents a recognition of the political and economic stability and a reputation in the field of education, with prestigious academic centers with national recognition.”

Named the Texas Tech University Costa Rica University Plaza, the 10,000-square-foot facility will begin construction in December and will be located in San Jose, the capitol of the country, according to the release.

HOUSTON (AP) — Pam Morren is used to fidgeting fourth-graders, but the 17-year teaching veteran was worried about her new class before school started in August.

The Houston Chronicle reports teachers at Turner Elementary in Pasadena deemed it the most hyperactive group ever to set foot on campus. From the time the current fourth-graders entered kindergarten, they were running circles around teachers and roughhousing in the halls.

To give them an outlet for their energy, Morren and Turner physical education teacher Jackie Caver introduced standing desks and foot boards that students could fidget with

under their desks.

“It’s 10,000 times better,” Morren said. “If you’re more free to move around, your grades will be better — especially the kids who would tend to get in trouble.”

Efforts to provide socalled kinesthetic furniture reflect a national emphasis on trying to find new ways to physically engage students, especially after the highstakes testing introduced

by No Child Left Behind in 2001 squeezed out recess and physical education at many schools. Fewer students are getting the one hour of exercise or physical activity that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends.

In the Houston region, Alief ISD now has active-based

learning equipment at 15 campuses, including underthe-desk foot pedals, standing desks and balance boards.

Pasadena ISD just won a grant to put standing desks and fidgeting footboards in Morren’s classroom and applied for another that will require teachers to take physical activity breaks every 20 minutes. Spring ISD uses standing desks and other strategies to keep energetic students active at its alternative school. And teachers at some Houston ISD schools have turned to crowdfunding to outfit their classrooms with wobble cushions and yoga balls.

“The bottom line with any furniture is that it has to be flexible, adaptable and tailored to meet various needs

that students have in order to help them stay focused and learn in a personalized environment,” said Jenny McGown, Klein ISD’s associate superintendent of teaching and learning. “Teachers are transforming their classrooms to create a culture of innovation and collaboration and adaptability to meet all students’ needs.”

Several Klein ISD campuses have one or two standing desks for every classroom.

Other schools provide tables and chairs with wheels, bean bags, ball chairs, tables that can be lowered and raised and tables with whiteboard surfaces.

Morren’s classroom in Pasadena has only three standing desks, but her kids clamor to be among the lucky few to use them each day. Students at their regular desks can use Spooner boards, which lie on the ground but have curved edges similar to a skateboard. They help kids keep their legs still.

But it’s not just the equipment Morren uses to channel her students’ energy. Every 20 minutes, the class takes a physical activity break.

Sometimes they’ll dance to a song. Other times they’ll try to cross their arms and touch parts of their faces with the opposite hand.

Caver, the physical education teacher at Turner, said keeping kids active in class does more than rid them of some of their extra energy.

Staff discusses hauntings at Ranching Heritage Center

The National Ranching Heritage Center is home to many historical structures that show how ranching has progressed from the late 18th century to now. With these old buildings, there are some paranormal stories that have developed.

According to the NRHC website, 30 of its 49 structures are between 100 and 177 years old.

Robert Tidwell, curator at the NRHC, said he has been working at the NRHC for 10 years, and in all that time, only one building has come up in paranormal talk.

This building is a twos t o r y Vi c t o r i a n h o u s e called the Barton House, Tidwell said. The Barton House is the focal point of the museum’s tour.

“The Barton House is a big imposing two-story house and looks like something that comes out of a paranormal thriller,” Tidwell said.

Buildings in the NRHC, including the Barton House, remain locked and visitors look through the windows to see inside, Tidwell said. A few visi-

tors, however, saw something inside the Barton House that they reported to staff at the NRHC. “A few years ago, we had a few visitors that just swore that when they looked in some of the windows in the front part of the building, they saw people in the dining room,”

Tidwell said. “Those visitors stopped and asked staff members if they were doing something to the building and if it was open to people that day, because they saw people inside the dining room. Whether or not they did (see people), I couldn’t say.”

White said he does not be-

lieve anyone has experienced any paranormal activity in the Barton House or in any of the buildings in the NRHC. The only instance of people asking about ghosts are the few phone calls the NRHC gets at this time of the year about paranormal activity in the Barton House.

“People just think there should be stories behind it because of the way it looks,” White said. “There have never been any stories or any sightings at the house. In talking with the family, there is nothing that would cause anything to be there.”

Tidwell said people think there are instances of paranormal activity in the NRHC buildings because of how old the buildings are. He, however, has not experienced any paranormal activity in any of the buildings.

“I have never heard voices calling my name or seen furniture moving, but that’s not to say it’s outside the realm of possibility,” Tidwell said.

Tidwell said in addition to the Barton House, there have been unusual occurrences that have happened within the museum building.

“It strikes me as odd because you would think it would have to be in some kind of old building,” Tidwell said.

One instance Tidwell heard about is regarding a staff member who arrived to the museum early in the morning. As they were checking if the security cameras were working, the staff member heard footsteps behind them, Tidwell said.

The staff member thought there was someone else in the museum, but realized they were the only ones parked in the parking lot, Tidwell said.

“There have been some things that have happened here that some of our staff have reported that leaves us scratching our heads,” Tidwell said.

White said he does not believe paranormal activity has happened in the NRHC. “There is nothing in our records that show that there has been anything that has happened in any of the buildings to cause such a belief,” White said. “We have never had an incident. There are no stories. I think it is just wishful thinking.” @DavidGayDT

AUSTIN, (AP) — Experts looking at safety of Texas judges nearly a year after an Austin jurist was shot have suggested removing some personal information of the elected officials from public databases.

After the 2015 incident, m e m b e r s o f t h e Te x a s Judicial Council panel, a special committee made up of judges and lawmakers, were tasked to make recommendations to the Legislature aimed at keeping judges safe at home and work. The group’s 19-page report was finalized Monday, KVUE-TV and the Austin American-

The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/ Hispanics and Native Americans in Science at Texas Tech has been recognized by the National Diversity in STEM Conference for community outreach.

The award was presented at a conference in Long Beach, California, earlier this month for the year 2015-2016, according to a Tech news release. This is the sixth consecutive year the organization has received this recognition.

Several weeks before the attack, authorities received a threat about a person planning to kill a judge, but the threat was deemed unfounded because it didn’t identify the judge by name, according to records obtained

by KVUE-TV and the Austin American-Statesman.

Texas bake sale parodies affirmative action AUSTIN, (AP) — A conservative students group’s bake sale parodying affirmative action has drawn a crowd of 300 protesters at the University of Texas in Austin.

The Young Conservatives of Texas mounted the anti-affirmative action bake sale on campus about

11 a.m. Wednesday. Items were priced in three tiers, one each for white, black and Hispanic customers.

The Daily Texan, the independent campus newspaper, reported that protesters began to gather about an hour later to debate with the sale participants. Protesters chanted,

“Racists go home!”

The sale drew criticism from Gregory Vincent, the university vice president for diversity and community engagement. He accused the Young Conservatives of “creating an environment of exclusion and disrespect” among the university students, faculty and staff.”

We should disregard what others think of us

T

here’s a popular YouTube vlogger I follow by the name of Casey Neistat.

One of the things I really appreciate about Neistat is the positive messages interlaced throughout his vlogs.

In one of his recent videos, Neistat said something that really resonated with me.

“You smile when you want to smile,” Neistat recited while pointing at the camera.

“Don’t you ever smile because somebody tells you to.”

Let me give a little context. Neistat’s wife, Candice, is often criticized in the YouTube comments for not smiling enough and for looking bored or angry.

On many occasions, Neistat has defended Candice,

explaining how she isn’t unhappy, but rather she simply isn’t trying to please anyone.

The quote mentioned above was from one such occasion. With this context in mind, Neistat’s quote suddenly becomes about so much more than a smile. He’s talking big picture, about our personalities as a whole.

Therefore, Neistat’s quote could be rewritten as, “Don’t ever think or act in a certain way you don’t want to. Don’t ever be someone else because somebody told you to.”

I wish I could have heard those words my freshman year of high school. I was often made fun of because I acted rather flamboyantly.

It really got to me and caused a lot of internal strife, as I struggled to reconcile who I was with who other people wanted me to be.

To this day, I still have people who regularly tell me to smile or who ask if I’m OK because I, apparently, look unhappy. I’m fine.

Being content or happy doesn’t have to look a certain way, contrary to popular belief.

I think we are all affected to some degree by an insecurity, which stems from concern for what others think of us.

I’d even argue that so-

cial media has made this issue worse.

We look at how many likes and shares our selfies got and wonder why it doesn’t have as many as our last selfies.

Did we get uglier? Does no one care? What happened?

I think a lot of this is on a subconscious level, too.

I don’t believe most people consciously make the connection between self-worth and social media statistics, but it’s there in our minds in one form or another.

However, this is beside the point. The bottom line is we focus far too much on what others think and not enough on our personal thoughts of ourselves.

This is a problem, because others are unreli-

able, so we’re going to be consistently unhappy.

Listen, I don’t care if you think you’re the nerdiest person out there.

You go be a mega-nerd, and you own it.

Maybe you’ve been told you aren’t pretty enough, fit enough or funny enough.

Whatever the case is, screw all that. You don’t need anyone else to inform you of your self-worth.

Be yourself. Take pride in who you are. You’re beautiful.

Ironically, our society often preaches this same sort of message.

However, at the same time, our society is the prime culprit in creating our loop of insecurities in body image, personalities and so on.

It is my hope that whoever reads this column will understand this message is coming from me — a fellow Texas Tech student — and not our society.

What if we actually stopped caring about what other people think? What if we all were true to who we really are?

Imagine the potential and the creativity that could come out of that.

Imagine what we could accomplish if we became content in who we are.

Halloween is the only time of year we’re supposed to be somebody else.

Truth behind existence of ghosts debated internally

T

he idea that ghosts exist is sort of a weird, isn’t it? The idea that there are invisible people or entities that hang out in old buildings, graveyards or abandoned hospitals seems strange said out loud.

Think about how you would explain a ghost to someone who has never heard of one.

“Well, they’re invisible people who throw chairs across the room, make the room a little too chilly, whisper things quietly, and also, a ghost may actually be a dead relative or a long-passed historical figure.”

who hates furniture, an airconditioner, a really quiet person or maybe that you just saw a person who looked exactly like your great uncle or Abraham Lincoln.

We all know what ghosts are. They’ve existed in folklore around the world for centuries. We love ghosts.

We make movies about ghosts every year with the intent of striking fear into our own hearts. For whatever reason, we love to be terrified of ghosts. This is how ghosts are most often portrayed: as

restless, angry spirits.

Most of us think about ghosts this way. When a friendly ghost movie was made, we had to name the ghost “Casper, the friendly ghost,” just to make sure people knew the difference.

So, we love ghosts. And we love to be afraid of them. But, do they actually exist?

I don’t know. I’ve heard stories from friends and coworkers. Sometimes what they tell me sounds so genuine that it raises questions for me.

Any conversation I have had with someone who believes in ghosts has felt like it contained the truth.

Many people share this belief. There are societies of people dedicated to looking for ghosts.

But, there is not necessarily real

evidence of ghosts’ existence.

No one has ever caught one or taken a credible photo of one. It is hard for me to believe in something I haven’t really seen.

What I can say is I have had experiences that were weird while working at a hotel as a bartender.

I had heard stories: the smell of cigar smoke in the basement when no one was there, my co-workers seeing a child-like figure at the end of the bar late one night and tourists experiencing strange events.

However, I had never experienced something personally.

Finally, I did. I was closing one night and finished mopping the kitchen. It was late, I was tired and all I could think about was closing

quickly and heading home.

When I finished, I walked out and headed toward the front lobby of the hotel where I would clock out.

As I turned the light off and was leaving, I heard what sounded like someone calling my name from the back of the kitchen. It was unusual; the kitchen had only one entrance, and the back of it was nothing more than a door-less brick wall.

I was curious, tired and confused, so I turned the light on and went to the back to see what could have made the sound. There was no one there; nothing had moved.

There were, however, what looked like large, dirty, bare footprints leading into the brick wall.

Is it weird I’m still skeptical after something like that? I tell myself there are definitely more logical things that could have happened.

I was tired and the hotel is old and creaky. Maybe I’m a horrible mopper.

In my head now, it is just a thing that happened one time. It is a nice story to tell, and if I told it to you in person, you would be able to tell I genuinely believe I experienced this.

However, to think about it too much is spooky and gives me the chills. I don’t need that in my life. So, if you need me, I’ll be at the Texas Tech School of Law watching “Casper” on my laptop. ravila@dailytoreador.com

Emotional support animals deemed unnecessary

hy do people who aren’t blind or veterans need to be escorted around by a “service” animal?

When did we decided emotional support animals are a good idea?

I don’t understand this phenomenon which is sweeping campus. It seems counterproductive to the treatment of the mental ailments afflicting the people to not have to face their social-anxiety on a daily basis.

How the heck can you get over an issue by continuing to rely on a crutch day in and day out? You cannot.

Local ghost society investigates supernatural occurrences

By KIRBY WARNER Staff Writer

Lubbock has its very own organization dedicated to the investigation of the paranormal using modern techniques.

According to its website, the Lubbock Ghost Investigation Society was founded in January 2008 in order to research, find and record the existence of ghosts.

They also want to help the people living in areas of paranormal activity come to terms with the experience.

Kelly Smith, the ghost investigation society’s equipment manager and technician, said much of the equipment is basic, such as instruments that detect electrical fields, digital voice recorders, geophones and motion detectors.

“We have a ghost box,” Smith said, “which is basically a little thing about the size of an old transition radio that will run through all of the frequencies, and it creates a white noise, a static white noise.

Sometimes, not a lot of times but sometimes, you can hear responses coming over the white noise.”

Smith said he and his wife conduct an investigation beforehand on the suspected haunted area.

The investigation includes asking questions such as

what the occupants think is wrong and the history of the area.

Anita Fisher, the president of the Lubbock Ghost Investigation, is one of the sensitives in the group. A sensitive, or a medium, is a person who can communicate with or sense spirits, according to the organization’s website.

Fisher said a medium’s job is to pick up energy that the equipment might miss.

“Ghosts are that energy,” Fisher said. “The more intent a ghost is, or a spirit, the higher the (magnetic frequency).

That’s why batteries get drained, and they take energy out of anything they can, including people.

That’s how they make themselves known.”

Fisher said she tends to get migraines when encountering this energy, and if the migraines worsen, she knows something supernatural is occurring.

Tech regrets fan behavior during Oklahoma game Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec released a statement Wednesday afternoon about fan behavior during Tech's football game against Oklahoma on Saturday.

During the game, some fans could be heard chanting obscenities about Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, who played for the Red Raiders before transferring.

Here is Schovanec's statement about the situation: “Texas Tech University deeply regrets the behavior of some students and fans at Saturday night’s football game against the University of Oklahoma. The behavior displayed is not representative of Texas Tech, its students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The Office of the President is proactively working alongside the Department of Athletics, the Center for

Campus Life and the Student Government Association to seek solutions and actions to prevent unacceptable conduct at all future events.”

During a news conference about the Tech campus in Costa Rica, Schovanec said university officials are determined to create permanent changes to fan behavior.

"I can assure you that we’re not just going to issue a statement, as I have, and drop it," he said. "I visited with Athletic Director (Kirby) Hocutt this afternoon, he feels exactly as I do that we must have a sustained effort to try to encourage our students to behave in a way that really represents the best qualities they have."

once conducted an investigation at Lincoln, New Mexico,on a ghost tour around an area where Billy the Kid and his regulators had gotten into a gun fight.

Smith said old graves were discovered before they got there that may have belonged to the regulators. While there, Anita Fisher experienced the sensation of being shot and stabbed, and the tour guide said the regulators trying to escape were gunned down at the exact spot she was standing.

“The guy said, ‘I haven’t told anyone about that yet,’” Smith said, “and that happened to her and he goes, ‘Yep, that’s just about the right spot where they were gunned down.’”

Smith said the group has seen some surprising things over time. The organization, however, makes sure that there are not mundane reasons for occurrences before declaring them paranormal.

Smith and the Fishers said when conducting the initial investigation, they check to see if there are any physical problems with the residence such as faulty wiring, carbon monoxide leaks or electromagnetic field waves emitted by devices such as microwaves.

“You may be perfectly fine,” Smith said, “and then you walk into this area where this electronic energy field is, and you’ll start feeling jittery, you start feeling like ‘I’m being watched’ or ‘I’m hearing something.’”

Residence Halls Association hosts annual Safe Treat

Texas Tech’s Residence Halls Association hosted its annual Safe Treat event as a safe alternative to door-todoor trick-or-treating from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Families walked across campus with kids of varying ages dressed up in different costumes, such as skeletal demons, firemen and various costumes based off intellectual properties such as “Transformers,” “Star Wars” and “Ghostbusters.”

Ashley Piatkowski, a senior vocal performance major from Huntsville and vice president of Campus Traditions, said this is the third Safe Treat she has been a part of.

“My first was a part of Complex Council in 2014,” Piatkowski said, “and then last year as a (community adviser), and then this year as the vice president of Campus Tradition with the (Residence Halls Association). So, I kind of walked up the stepladder a bit.”

Piatkowski said the most important parts of planning Safe Treat were purchasing the necessary candy, getting the word of the event out to local residents and making sure they have fun.

Hulen/Clement Residence Eclamptic had a game called Candy Walk, where children walked around a circle that was made of pictures of Halloween symbols, such as vampires, skeletons and pumpkins. The winner was the one standing on the right picture.

Coleman Residence Hall, meanwhile, sported more horror related decorations and a mad science table, where a volunteer dressed as a scientist pulled candy out of a fake corpse to give to kids.

portation was also set up, where families waited outside residence halls for a school bus with a sign labeled “Boo Bus” to shuttle them from hall to hall.

Tera Stines, a junior speech, language and hearing sciences major from Victoria and president of RHA, said each residence hall decides how it will organize activities for the event.

“RHA works to coordinate it as a group and figure out what every hall is doing and get it advertised,” Stines said, “But normally we leave it up to the halls to decide what activities they’re doing.”

Stines said the activities that are organized depend on the year. For instance, when she was a resident, volunteer kids were allowed to go door-to-door through the residence halls to trickor-treat, while some other years the kids had to stay in the lobbies.

Piatkowski said Safe Treat is a viable alternative to regular tricko r- t r e a t i n g b e c a u s e o f the safety of the campus and the leaders of the residence halls providing activities for the kids.

“We plan it to where the children and the residents of Lubbock can come in,” Piatkowski said, “and they don’t have to worry about any type of neighborhood or house or anything like that.”

Vampires, werewolves influence culture

Christopher Smith, associate professor of musicology and director of the Vernacular Music Center, said Halloween was originally a Celtic harvest festival celebrated under various names all across Europe. The original name was All Hallow’s Eve. On Oct. 31, the wall between the human world and the supernatural world became really thin.

Trick-or-treating reminds people to be generous and kind with their neighbors, Smith said. Halloween is a celebration of the unpredictable, because it recognizes the world is somewhat irrational and mysterious.

“For a lot of us, the world is a complicated and confusing place. Things happen, and we do not understand why,” Smith said. “I think it is comforting that there is a holiday that says that it is okay that weird things happen because that is part of being human.”

A new exhibit at the Museum of Texas Tech University discusses the origins of Halloween monsters.

Gary Morgan, executive director of the museum, is the curator of the exhibition In The Blood that features the war between vampires and werewolves.

The purpose of this exhibit is to take people on a journey about the origins of these creatures’ mytholo-

gies, Morgan said. ’In The Blood follows the origin of vampires and werewolves from them being these corpses coming out of the grave to the transformation in Victorian fiction,” Morgan said. “In the past, there have been a great fear of wolves, because they were perceived as killers of livestock and in rare occasion even killers of people.

Wolves have certainly played a high price for this, and humans have drastically eradicated this species.”

Most people have changed their attitude on wolves, Morgan said. There is now a more romantic attitude to wolves that embodies freedom and spirt of nature.

Werewolves were just one aspect of the belief that people could turn into other things, he said. In Europe, wolves were the dominant predators, and they hunted mostly at night. Therefore, it is not surprising that wolves became one of the most common avatars of shape-shifting.

Although vampires and werewolves are not directly connected to Halloween, there are people who dress up like them, he said. These creatures have origins from ancient Greek and even before that when there were perceptions of people coming back from the dead.

“The Revenants, as we know them, are corpses

risen from the graveyard, and they were in fact the first vampires,” Morgan said. “Vampires weren’t the pretty sparkling people you see in ‘Twilight.’”

Although vampire bats did not inspire the myth of vampires, wolves did inspire the fear of werewolves, he said. There is a different historical evolution between the real animal and the myth for werewolves and vampires.

The notion that these creatures are eternal enemies is a recent idea that became popular in the 20th century from movies and other fictional works, Morgan said.

A vampire bat weighs about two ounces, and it has a wing span of 10 inches. These animals live in Mexico, Central America and South America, so it is interesting that while people associate vampires with eastern European bats, vampire bats do not live anywhere near that area.

“That linkage between the bats and vampire really largely originated with Bram Stoker and ‘Dracula’ because he heard stories of bats in South America that drank blood, so (they used) this information to create a humanoid vampire that drinks blood,” Morgan said.

‘Dracula’ set the level on what is commonly recognized as a vampire, he said.

Some of the attributes of this character relate closely to the belief structures of eastern Europe, but other attributes were made up by the Stoker and some of these carried on through the popular fiction.

Similarly, werewolves have also changed, he said. Now, werewolves in fiction and movies have taken a more human aspect as seen in the movie “The Wolfman.”

Morgan said werewolves and vampires are not just monsters. They are humans changed into monsters. Throughout human history, people have been afraid of the dark and afraid of things they could not understand. This generated a whole raft of supernatural creatures.

“Werewolves and vampires are actually humantransformed. It is important to realize this, because what they do is to manifest the worst aspect of humanity,” Morgan said.

Puente twins motivate each other

Being an athlete and transitioning from high school to college is a huge task for an incoming freshman, especially when one comes to a Division I university with no one by their side.

However, twin sisters Gwennie and Gabbie Puente did not have to go through that rough patch alone. Last year, both sisters signed with the Texas Tech soccer team to continue their collegiate careers together.

“When we first got recruited, it was to different schools, so we thought maybe we can go to different colleges, but once Texas Tech offered to us, we both were like this is a great university and a great opportunity to play together,” Gwennie Puente said.

Sophomore forward Gwennie Puente and redshirt freshman defender Gabbie Puente have played together for most of their lives. Gabbie Puente said watching their older sister play was a motivating factor that made

them fall in love with the sport, and they have played together ever since.

“Basically, we have played together our whole lives,” Gabbie Puente said. “We watched our older sister play when we were about 3, and then we started playing together at age 4. We have always played together through all select and high school and now in college.”

With Red Raider soccer coming off a five-game losing streak, it is hard for the players to rally together and keep their heads up. Gwennie Puente said having her sister by her side is a motivator when the game gets tough.

“It’s amazing. I love having Gabbie here,” Gwennie Puente said. “Whenever I have a bad game or bad practice, I always have her here to support me and say ‘Hey, it’s okay.’ She always comes out here early with me, and we work out together. She’s just a great support and motivator.”

against Kansas, leading Tech to victory in the Big 12 Conference championship. Gabbie Puente was redshirted last year, meaning this season was her first time to play on the field.

Since the start of the season, Gabbie Puente has improved her game. She scored her first collegiate goal against Northeastern to help the Red Raiders get the win, 2-0.

“This is actually my first season, and I think I have improved tremendously,” Gabbie Puente said. “I’ve gained a lot more confidence, which is what I lacked last year.

With gaining confidence, you have more desire to get on the ball and control it. I’ve also became a lot stronger in the air which has improved my game.”

When speaking of the back-to-back losses to Big 12 opponents, Gwennie Puente said it is easier to rally back when one has the support of a family member who is also a team member.

“No one ever likes to lose, and so it gets you down, but

having Gabbie here and even the entire team is just one huge family,” Gwennie Puente said. “We all motivate each other to keep pushing for the next game.”

Next on the schedule for Tech soccer is No. 24 Oklahoma Friday at the John Walker Soccer Complex. This game will determine if Tech will continue its season to the Big 12 tournament.

“This game is arguably the most important one for our season, and it’s also our senior night,” Gabbie Puente said. “Not only is it important to get a win, but it’s also important to honor our seniors and honor the program that we love.” @ABoutwellDT

No. 6 Kansas defeats Tech volleyball

The Texas Tech volleyball team dropped three sets to the No. 6 Kansas Jayhawks Wednesday night in the United Supermarkets Arena.

Despite the loss, coach Tony Graystone said he felt pleased with the performances Tech’s roster had in the game.

“Let’s call it what it is. Kansas is an elite team, and they played like it tonight,” Graystone said. “Honestly I was more than happy with what we did tonight. We looked so much better than the first time we played them.”

Kansas nearly pulled a flawless offensive first set, as it committed just one error and registered 17 kills in a 25-15 first-set win.

As its offense bunkered down and hit for .410, Kansas demonstrated why it leads the Big 12 Conference in opponent hitting percentage by holding Tech to .057, six errors and eight kills.

After falling behind 9-12, the lack of kills hurt Tech’s chances of coming back from its four-point deficit with the Jayhawks forcing an 8-1 run.

Kansas followed its first frame win by deepening the deficit for the Red Raiders with a 25-16 second-set victory. Tech’s numbers in the second set looked nearly identical, as it hit for .059, tallied nine kills and committed seven errors.

Kansas hit less cleanly in the second set with five errors, but Tech struggled to involve other players in its

At the end of the match, Douglass and Redding were the only players for Tech who recorded more than two kills, with Douglass collecting 10 and Redding gathering nine.

For Kansas, junior right side hitter Kelsie Payne recorded 16 kills, and junior outside hitter Madison Rigdon led the game with 17 kills.

Speaking on Kansas’ ability to control the scoreboard, Graystone said Jayhawk senior libero Cassie Wait and the Kansas block influenced the functioning of the team’s offense.

“Their libero is as good

as any in the country, and she played like it tonight, and then their block is big,” Graystone said. “They found a way to channel where they want it (the ball) to go.”

Past the midpoint of the third and final set, the Jayhawk offense gained a significant advantage over Tech by outscoring the hosts 7-2 for a 22-15 lead. Tech fought back and came within five points at 24-19, but Tech could not overcome the five-point margin and lost the set 25-20.

Tech’s loss dropped the team to 10-14 overall and 0-9 in the Big 12.

Cubs awaken, top Indians to even World Series at 1

Big 12 still has playoff hopes with Baylor, WVU

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jake Arrieta made a teasing try at history, Kyle Schwarber drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs brushed off a shutout to even the World Series with their first Fall Classic win in 71 years, 5-1 over the Cleveland Indians in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Arrieta carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, briefly invoking Don Larsen’s name, before the Indians touched him for two hits and a run.

However, the right-hander helped give Chicago just what it needed — a split at Progressive Field — before the Cubbies return to their Wrigley Field den for the next three games starting Friday night.

The Cubs hadn’t won in the Series since beating Detroit 8-7 in 1945 to force Game 7.

With Baylor and West Virginia both undefeated halfway through the season, there could still be playoff hopes for the Big 12 Conference.

The eighth-ranked Bears and 10th-ranked Mountaineers have to keep winning.

While many wrote off the Big 12’s chances for a return to the playoffs after Oklahoma’s two nonconference losses in September, Baylor and West Virginia are among seven teams from Power Five leagues still without a loss before the first College Football Playoff rankings of this season are released next week.

The Big 12 is reinstating its actual title game next season, and that will at least provide league teams a “13th data point” for the playoff selection committee to consider like the other Power Five conferences al-

Oklahoma’s quest for its 10th Big 12 title could impact the league’s CFP chances, but it still remains unlikely that the two-loss Sooners can get back into playoff contention.

The 16th-ranked Sooners (5-2, 4-0 Big 12), coming off a wild 66-59 win and allowing a school-record 854 total yards against Texas Tech, play consecutive games in November against Baylor and West Virginia, and losses by either one of those teams will hurt their chances.
