Serving the Texas Tech University community since 1925
Texas Tech veteran program ranked Texas Tech’s Military and Veterans Programs has earned seven recognitions in 2014 and is among the most celebrated military and veterans support units in higher education. Tech is listed as a 2015 Military Friendly School for the sixth straight year by Victory Media Inc., K’Leigh Bedingfield, senior editor in the Office of Communications and Marketing at Tech, said. Tech is the third university in the nation to acquire the designation of a Purple Heart University, she said. U.S. News and World Report ranked Tech as one of the top 50 universities for veterans, earning the Best College for Veterans award, Bedingfield said. “Texas Tech is privileged to serve the men and women who have fought for our freedom. It is the least we can do for them,” Tech President M. Duane Nellis said, according to a Tech news release. “Texas Tech is committed to our military, and these awards are nice recognitions of our efforts.” The Military and Veterans Program serves more than 1,800 military veterans and their dependents while they earn their degrees, Bedingfield said. The Rawls College of Business ranked Number 13 out of 64 other business colleges across the country, she said. Tech also earned the Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs for Veterans award. Schools are evaluated by strict criteria, Bedingfield said, including achievement in military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-campus support and online support services. “Earning these recognitions is a testament to the dedication of our university and to the success of veterans and their family members,” Ryan Van Dusen, Military and Veterans Programs director, said, according to the release. “We are committed to maintaining an environment that encourages personal growth and intellectual development.”

Tech planning for high energy Saturday By EVERETT CORDER SportS Editor
At the beginning of the 2014 season, the Texas Tech football game against the University of Texas had already been sold out for more than a month, and resale tickets were going for $114 on Vivid Seats, the official ticket resale website for Tech Athletics. Now, just three days before the Red Raiders take on their in-state rival Longhorns, the cheapest resale ticket on Vivid Seats is $73, nearly half of what it cost in August. Although the ticket prices have dropped significantly, Tech Associate Athletics Director Blayne Beal said his staff is still expecting the stadium to fill up. “Yes, there are tickets available (on Vivid Seats) or sites like it,” Beal said, “but from a planning perspective or whatever, yes we are expecting a full house.” Both Tech and Texas are currently in the bottom half of the Big 12 Conference, but junior center Jared Kaster said it does not take away from the meaning of the game.
Kaster said the Red Raiders still have a chance of making a bowl game, which is the team’s overall goal. “(Texas) has always been a big school, a big football team that’s always been in the talk, and for us kids growing up, that’s all you see,” he said, “and I think that would be a big thing for us to kind of kick back our season, to finish out strong.” Because the game is a sellout, Beal said student seating will be limited to the normal 12,577 seats with the grass section in the north end zone open as overflow seating. Fox Sports 1 will be broadcasting the game nationally, and originally used a six-day window option for the game to start at either 11 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. The game time was eventually set for the 6:30 slot, which Beal said will be very helpful. This weekend’s matchup is the 64th all-time between the two teams, but will be only the second time ever that both teams will enter with losing records. The first and only time it happened previously was in 1993, when Tech was 2-5 and Texas was 2-3-1. The Red Raiders only two wins prior to the Texas game

were against Pacific and Rice, but Tech was able to take down the Longhorns on the road, 31-22. Defensive coordinator Mike Smith, who grew up in Lubbock and eventually played at Tech, said the Texas game is one of the most exciting every year, no matter what the circumstances surrounding it are. A Texas Tech student debate occurred Tuesday evening in the Escondido Theater in the Student Union building. In attendance were the Tech College Republicans, Tech Student Democrats, Young Americans for Liberty and the Young Conservatives of Texas. The first round of the debate discussed same sex marriage. Mark Marin, a representative of TSD, said the democrats are asking for same sex marriage to be legal in the nation. He said records must be kept of legal documents, which is why the government should be involved in these types of issues. He said TSD does not agree with each state taking charge of defining same sex marriage and doing work the government could do. “When we go off to war, we don’t go off to war as a state,” he said. “We go off to war as a nation.” DEBATE continued on Page 2 ➤➤

It was also discovered that several lights were removed from the Geosciences building, he said. John Mendoza, a senior exercise and sport sciences major from Allen, said the vandalism is a shame. Having attended the event before, he said he knows the labor that goes into the preparation, and hates to see anyone disrespect that hard work. “It’s really childish,” Mendoza said, “especially for college-aged people. I would expect them to act more appropriately.” HSC continued on Page 2 ➤➤
