When students look for costumes for Halloween, price, style and originality are just a few factors that come into play.

An estimated 67.4 percent of Americans will buy Halloween costumes this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Debbie Laverie, Jerry S. Rawls and Piper Professor of marketing at Texas Tech, said the federation makes predictions each year about the amount of spending that will take place and base their findings on three categories.

“Basically the three big categories are candy to hand out, decorations for homes and yards and the third one are costumes,” she said. “For this year they’ve only made predictions, but they tend to be pretty spot on.”

The time period in which these statistics are measured lasts from the end of September until the end of October, she said, and the federation estimated Halloween shoppers will spend $77.52 per person buying items from these categories.

Mark McKenzie, store manager at Spirit Halloween, said the most expensive costume at his store is $79.99, but the average shopper will spend $40 per transaction when shopping.

“We even have pet costumes,” he said. “For pet costumes, they’re $19.99 and infant costumes are $6.98.”

Austin North, a senior business major from Frisco, said this is his first year buying a costume for Halloween and he did not think about going to a thrift store to buy it.

He went with friends, he said, and ended up with a mask and a cape.

“It’s my first year, so I’m not really going big,” he said. “I was mad I spent so much on something that goes over my face though so I wish I had thought about trying to save money. It should

be fun.”

Savers also has items that can be made into costumes, Suzanne Dohner, Savers store manager, said.

Not only does the store carry used clothing and clothes that have been saved from previous Halloweenspecific costumes, but it also has new items that can be used to revitalize old costumes.

“We also have our new costumes that are in our store that we get in that they can use for that too,” she said, “which is makeup, stuff for their hair, different things that they can attach to their skin to make them look different — we have a lot of things.”

The average costume put together from Savers costs between $20 and $30, she said.

While students can get cheaper costumes for Halloween at Savers, Dohner said the store is open yearround and employs a costume consultant who can help those who come in and are not quite sure what they are looking for.

“They ask them what they’re looking for, what they want to be and if they don’t even know, the lady who works here, her name is Joann,” she said. “She will look at them, take them around and miraculously find a costume for them.”

Some stores are not open yearround, like Spirit Halloween, McKenzie said.

According to the federation, during the Halloween season Americans will spend an estimated $7.4 billion.

It is this increased spending that keeps seasonal stores such as Spirit Halloween open each year.

“We’re open from the first of August through November 3,” McKenzie said. “It’s a lot of man hours that it takes to set this store up, including animatronics and everything. We start working on it two weeks prior to us opening and it’s every day.”

The store uses a smaller crew of workers when setting up the store to try to keep costs low, McKenzie said.

Halloween is still ranked as the third largest holiday when measured by consumer spending, behind Christmas and Thanksgiving, Laverie said, but it is the fastest growing of the three.

“They’re specialty stores so it makes sense that they’re open for a small window,” Laverie said. “There’s enough of a demand here that it justifies having a store like that.”

While Lubbock does have the economy to support one such store, Wallet Hub, an organization devoted to reviewing and comparing the economies and small businesses in an area, ranked Lubbock No. 65 when it comes to best and worst cities for Halloween.

The study included entertainment, environment, safety, parties and activities, and the weather forecast for Halloween when deciding rankings, according to the study. Other cities to make the top 100 are Dallas, No. 3, Plano, No. 12, Houston, No. 39, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, rounding out the list at No. 100.

In addition to an increase in spending this year, Laverie said it has also been predicted that there will be more spending on items for Halloween parties, as the holiday falls on a Friday this year.

“The reason I’m getting dressed up this year is because I’m going to a party,” he said. “Usually I have class the next day so this is good.”

Inez Gumtang-Sering, a junior marketing major from Pearland, said she is going to make her costume this year both to save money and prove she can use a sewing machine.

“I’m going to be Korra because she’s a badass,” she said. “I’m using some strips of fabric to make the bands of her hair and try and rip up some old Ugg boots for my shoes. I’m excited.” ➤➤news@dailytoreador.com

Quarantined Ebola nurse goes outside; police watch FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — A nurse who treated Ebola patients in West Africa vowed on Wednesday to end her voluntary quarantine, even going so far as to step out of her home and shake a reporter’s hand, signaling a showdown with state police monitoring her and state officials seeking to legally enforce her confinement.

Wednesday night. State and local police could only watch from across the street because a judge hadn’t signed off on a court order sought by state health officials.

Hickox, who has shown no symptoms of Ebola, told NBC’s “Today” show and ABC’s “Good Morning America” earlier that she planned to defy the state’s voluntary quarantine.

“I remain appalled by these home quarantine policies that have been

forced upon me even though I am in perfectly good health,” Hickox said on “Today.”

One of her lawyers, Norman Siegel, said she isn’t willing to cooperate further unless the state lifts “all or most of the restrictions.” But state officials continued to assert that she should remain in isolation until Nov. 10, the end of the 21-day incubation period for Ebola.

A judge would have to grant the state’s request in what could serve as a test as to the legality of state quarantines during the Ebola scare.

Mobile Election Identification Certificate station visits Tech

Texas Tech students visited a mobile station issuing Election Identification Certificates in the Student Union building Wednesday to obtain a valid form of identification in order to vote in the upcoming Texas election.

Election Identification Certificates are available without charge to qualified Texas voters who do not already have an approved form of identification, according to the Texas Secretary of State website.

Chanpollen Im, a freshman business major from Houston, said this will be the first election she can vote in and she thinks the station offers students more information and convenience while registering to vote.

“It might seem like you’re not making a big difference, but actually whenever you cast your vote, you have a say,” Im said. “We are constituents and we want someone to represent us as a whole.”

Alicia Pierce, director of communications for the Office of the Secretary of State, said the mobile station is one more option for Texans to get a valid form of identification, especially for students who need a certificate.

The election occurring Nov. 4 will be the fourth statewide election in which valid photo identification is required to vote in person, Pierce said. There are six other acceptable forms of identification, including a Texas driver’s license, a Texas personal identification card or a Texas concealed handgun license, which are all issued by the Department of Public Safety.

“I feel like I’d be swayed by the crowd here,” Akanwa said.

Students who attend a college or university away from home can either vote early by mail or register to vote at their college address, according to the website.

If the student chooses to vote early by mail, the student has claimed their parent or guardian’s residence as their primary residence.

If the student chooses to register to vote at their college address, the student considers that address their permanent address, according to the website.

Students cannot be registered in both places.

Victor Ochei Jr., a junior biochemistry major from Dallas, said he believes voting is important,

but there are other matters in life that require everyone’s attention and opinion.

People may be less likely to vote because they do not have an election identification certificate, Ochei said.

“I don’t feel as if my vote really counts,” he said. “I don’t feel like my vote is that swing vote in the election.”

He said he thinks the end result of elections is usually the same and an individual vote will not make a large enough impact.

If individuals do not have a valid form of photo identification during early voting or on election day, Pierce said these individuals can vote provisionally and present a valid photo identification to the voter registrar’s office within six days after election day.

The goal of the mobile station is to provide access and provide opportunities to individuals who need a valid photo identification in order to vote in person, Pierce said.

Even if interested individuals miss the mobile station, Pierce said those individuals have other options, including voting by mail, which does not require a valid photo identification, or visiting the DPS during business hours.

“Even if I do, it’s not that I won’t vote, it’s more of I’ve never voted before,” Ochei said. “I’m going to vote at some point because I need to vote at some point in my life, but I’m not voting because I have to.”

Early voting began Oct. 20 and ends 7 p.m. Friday. Election day is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Romney should not run for president in 2016

I

n spite of popular theories, the oft-used axiom, “If at first you do not succeed, try, try again,” isn’t always necessarily the case.

Speculation has been going around for months that 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will attempt another presidential run in 2016. According to a CNN article, on Monday, former senator and 1996 GOP presidential candidate Bob Dole introduced Romney at a campaign event for Kansas Senator Pat Roberts and declared, “I want him to run again.”

Aside from the fact that Dole also lost a presidential bid, as well as the fact that he’s hardly been politically relevant since, this is an interesting assertion. There is already a crowded field of potential candidates to earn the GOP nomination in 2016 even without Romney’s name thrown into the mix.

Yet Romney hasn’t ruled out running again, and he would undoubtedly have his share of supporters. Some of his predictions during the 2012 campaign have come true, most notably that Russia would become “our number one geopolitical foe,” a prediction for which President Barack Obama openly mocked him in a nationally televised debate.

In fact, Romney should just sit out this round, not because he has no chance of winning, but because his inclusion in the race would only cloud the ability of primary voters to choose the best candidate.

Romney will have his supporters much like he did in the 2012 primary, but his detractors will be even stronger in their opposition to him now that he’s lost a presidential bid.

In addition, the pool of candidates could be even larger in 2016 than in 2012, and one major name could take hold of the more moderate section of GOP voters that Romney carried in 2012: Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.

There will already be a plethora of candidates in the race anyway. Some rumored candidates include senators Marco Rubio and Paul, former Senator Rick Santorum, Texas Gov. Rick Perry,

Romney will have his supporters much like he did in the 2012 primary, but his detractors will be even stronger in their opposition to him now that he’s lost a presidential bid.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

The GOP could have done better with fewer candidates in 2012, as Romney came out of the primary already battle weary and quickly had to change his strategy of presenting himself as farther to the right to presenting himself as a more moderate candidate.

The GOP would do better to have three or four good candidates rather than six, seven or more candidates, some of which will be good while others will be milquetoasts. This waters down the debate and takes attention away from the truly worthy candidates. On top of that, it just takes too long.

If Romney ran in 2016, he would certainly not garner much support from the more conservative wing of the GOP, which he didn’t get enough support from in 2012 anyway.

Romney also would be vying for the support of the more moderate sections of the party with Paul, who would have an edge because of his libertarian leanings and the fact that he’s a fresh candidate, while Romney is getting stale at this point.

While Romney might make a good president, and while it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he would win if he ran in 2016, the best thing for the GOP as a whole is for Romney to step aside this time. He had his chance in 2012 and lost, and there’s often a reason for that.

The GOP needs a new leader and a new direction, so running the same guy for president again would just be counterproductive.

Rape culture infects college community like disease the exact same thing; more importantly, they do the same exact thing.

Those of you who have just thought to yourselves, “Yeah, they both make me laugh,” need to re-evaluate your sense of humor. What this phrase does is insidious, and your laughter proves the point.

What this phrase does, not on its own, but in conjunction with a host of other harmful practices and “harmless” jokes, is to subjugate one half of the population of this community to the will of a few with the tacit complicity of all.

This phrase is part of a larger, unruly set of sayings and actions that serve to keep especially women scared, a program of terror that masquerades as good fun and brotherly bonding. The state of fear on our campus that a few men actively breed at their misconceived parties (where rape is both made light of and actually perpetrated), and that the rest of us, men and women, passively tolerate, leaves countless people, and especially countless women, paralyzed, unable freely and safely to learn, socialize and grow.

We have all conspired in the creation of the atmosphere of our community, so it is possible for us to conspire again to different ends. If we are serious, then we

are going to have to look deeply at the problems that have spread fear, like the West Texas dust, into every lecture hall and dorm room, every party and seminar on our campus.

Reprimanding a group of immature fools for putting up an ill-advised poster is nothing more than a cough drop thrown at the cancer of privilege and domination. If we are to root this cancer out we need a radically invasive procedure, one that digs deep into the entrails of the campus and pulls out the ugly heart of the disease.

I don’t pretend to have a full diagnosis for you; in fact, one of my reasons for writing this letter is to continue a campuswide dialogue, begun by the women of Texas Tech and continued by the faculty and students who share a commitment to eradicating this plague.

However, we all know that the threat of sexual assault is one of the most widespread and aggressive effects of the disease; therefore, we must start by cutting it out of the fabric of our community.

We must take a stand against those who would maintain that rape is a laughing matter, for this is the only way we can stand with those who are terrorized by the rape culture such discourse engenders.

The disease is spreading, like a swollen river breaking its banks, its waters soaking the psyches of the women and men of Tech, but also, those of the little boys and girls unfortunate enough to search for a Wi-Fi signal as they leave their classrooms, and their innocence, for the afternoon sun.

A few days ago, while awaiting the stream of pure young minds that would soon gush out Hutchinson Middle School’s front doors, a parent tapped on the settings icon of her iPhone. She was hoping for a public Wi-Fi signal so as to speed her unfinished business before her attentions were monopolized by her child. As she gazed down to the list of available routers, she was overcome with consternation at first, and then, as she thought of the countless smartphones in the hands of those young, impressionable children, with blinding rage. The first connection on the list was, “No Means Yes, Yes Means Anal.”

I’m sure there are some of you who are laughing to yourselves and planning your own hilarious, rape-promoting router names. I am also sure that there are an even larger number of you reading this and thinking how disgusting it is that someone chose to disseminate this deplorable message again.

As all of you will remember, this is the same message that was broadcast in a different way at a recent Phi Delta Theta party and generated a huge amount of negative publicity, not to mention anger.

Obviously, these occurrences are interrelated, and not simply because they say

Legalization of marijuana could be beneficial

A

new generation of recreational pot users has the potential to end the marijuana prohibition.

This idea comes from a recent report by GreenWave Advisors, a research and advisory firm that serves the emerging marijuana industry in the U.S. The firm found that the marijuana industry could be worth about $35 billion by 2020, if all the states were to fully legalize the plant.

“Federal law will likely change, thus eliminating the current dichotomy,” the report said.

“The federal government’s ‘allow for now’ policies suggest that it is warming up to the idea of full legalization. Also, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle continue to push various pieces of legislation to ease current laws.

“What is driving this is that the medical benefits of marijuana are becoming better understood, and that politicians are becoming more mindful of the positive economic impact of legalization.

Perhaps most important, public support in favor of legalization is growing.”

So why isn’t this plant fully legal yet?

Some opinions around why marijuana is illegal can be traced back to the early days of the plant. After all, the plant has only been illegal for less than one percent of the time it has been in use.

There is simply a plethora of negative opinions about the plant and not enough research to back up the thought that marijuana can cause harm to its users.

The Marijuana Industry Group reported that Colorado, since its complete legalization of the plant, has seen an increase of jobs and a growing economy.

Colorado and Washington are the two states to have fully legalized marijuana.

Anthony Estolano expects a $98 million jump in tax revenue from weed sales this year.

Along with more tax revenues, legalizing marijuana also adds jobs. It was estimated by the Marijuana Industry Group that about 10,000 people now work in the weed industry in Colorado, with further job growth expected.

Anti-marijuana groups have also stressed their opinions about the legalization of the plant.

The Citizens Against Legalizing Marijuana group believes the plant is the leading cause of injuries and car crashes, although there is no sufficient evidence to back this up.

Wi t h t h e growing industry, I believe marijuana will and should be legalized.

The GreenWave Advisors, along with other research groups, provides great insight to the potential benefits of the legalization of the plant.

“We believe now is the time to gain a better understanding of sector dynamics and prepare for the imminent changes that will open the floodgates and profoundly impact investment strategies in the marijuana industry,” the report concluded.

Those who educate themselves now will be best positioned to profit from the coming opportunities and will therefore have a distinct advantage over those who wait.”

Even though reports like the one from GreenWave provide predictions on what could happen, I think it is time for the nation to stop being closed-minded to legalizing a plant and make it legal for the whole country — though with certain rules.

Marijuana has also been used by some of America’s most influential people, including President Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

Other benefits of the plant can be seen on CNN’s documentary “Weed.”

The documentary, by CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent D r. S a n j a y Gupta, covered the medical and life-saving affect the plant had on some normal citizens, including a child.

Like Colorado and Wa s h i n g t o n , buying the plant should involve certain precautions such as an age limit.

Along with an age limit, there should be a limit on how much a buyer can get.

Lastly, while we could potentially live in a marijuana-loving country, users should not publically use the plant since there will still be citizens who will not partake in the smoking of the plant.

Expert, students discuss paranormal events

By LIANA SOLIS Staff Writer

Halloween is a time when talk of spirits and the supernatural commonly arise in conversation.

Jason Perez, founder of the West Texas Paranormal Society, investigates paranormal sightings year-round.

He and a few friends founded the society back in 2009, he said, but the group has since split into two separate organizations.

“We are currently expanding and trying to look for more members for the team,” Perez said. “We have three members currently, but I have more than 40 applicants I am still looking at to add to the team.”

The West Texas Paranormal Society has investigated roughly 45 cases in Lubbock and in surrounding areas, he said.

The society’s mission is to investigate any type of disturbance, according to its website, and to help others better understand the paranormal.

“We investigate big and small cases and have helped debunk a lot of places people think are being haunted,” Perez said. “People will have a water heater

problem or something similar and think they are hearing things. We want to help everyone that we can.”

One of the most interesting cases they have worked involved investigating a haunted monastery in Stanton, he said.

The members of the society were granted special access to the monastery after hours to investigate some strange occurrences, he said.

“We had set up in the main living room area and had cameras recording in all the rooms,” Perez said. “At one point when we were about to give up for the night, we all heard a loud boom and all the lights went off around us.”

The power cord and box, which was bolted above them, had been completely ripped off the ceiling, he said.

When they went back to look at the tape, a hazy figure was seen traveling across the screen at the same time the power went out, Perez said.

“That was one of the weirdest things that I have seen with any case we have done,” he said. “We looked at that video image and knew we had just caught something.”

The society has been invited to

speak at several conventions, Perez said, both in the area and out of state.

His team is currently comprised of himself, an electronic voice phenomenon specialist and a research manager who also doubles as the team’s psychic, he said.

“We were in Petersburg one time, and after simply touching a building, our psychic gave us an extensive history of its past,” Perez said. “When we checked with the people who worked there, her story matched identically to what they told us — that’s when we knew she was the real deal.”

Although the WTPS have found evidence of the supernatural, there are still skeptics who do not believe in spirits.

Andrew Grant, a freshman exercise and sport sciences major from Plano, said he has never believed in ghosts.

“It’s just one of those things I have never seen any evidence for myself,” he said, “so I have no reason to believe they exist.”

Perez said there used to be a skeptic working on the team with him who would try to find other explanations for things they found.

TAB hosts Tech or Treat for Lubbock community

Every year, children of all ages get excited about dressing up as their favorite character and getting piles of candy during Halloween.

The Texas Tech Activities Board hosted its annual Tech or Treat from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Student Union building for the Lubbock community.

Kimberly Simon-Akins, assistant director for Student Union and Activities, said this is the second year they have hosted Tech or Treat.

“We used to do Greek Treat, but then it just got too dangerous,” SimonAkin said. “So we wanted to continue doing something on campus that was safe and fun for all the kids still.”

The night started out with a parade around the SUB for the children to participate in.

She said the various organizations that volunteer for the event, such as Greek life and other campus organizations, stood outside and cheered for them as they passed.

“It’s a very informal thing but the kids love it,” Simon-Akins said.

“It gives them a chance to show off their costume and get applauded by college students.”

Throughout the rest of the night, various games and activities were available for children to participate in where they win candy and prizes, she said.

A magic show was also put on for them, Simon-Akins said, as well as face painting and an opportunity to take pictures with this year’s homecoming king and queen.

year and almost 2,500 kids showed up for the event,” she said. “They just have a blast with everything they have to do there.”

Last year 10 organizations volunteered at the event, Simon-Akins said, and this year they had roughly 35.

Lindsay Langford, a sophomore nursing major from Plano, volunteered for the event through the ALD/PES Honor Society, she said.

Her organization voted on setting up a pumpkin painting group to offer the children at the event, she said.

“This was just a great way for our organization to get involved with something going on at campus,” Langford said.

Langford would have liked this kind of opportunity when she was a child, she said.

Gabby Martinez, a sophomore prenursing major from San Antonio, said

she agrees this is a unique opportunity for the children of Lubbock.

“I think it’s so cool that they get to come onto campus and see what the university is really like,” Martinez said.

“It’s so great that they get to come here and be able to celebrate Halloween in a safe environment.”

This is an event they want to continue to host every year, Simon-Akins said, because they have had such a good response.

Langford said her favorite part was getting to sit down and interact with the children while painting pumpkins.

“There are a lot of parts of Lubbock that aren’t really that safe to Trick or Treat in,” she said. “Here the kids were in a safe environment while still having a lot of fun, and they really get to see what the atmosphere of Texas Tech is like.” ➤➤loslis@dailytoreador.com

They would show him a video or recording and he would try to blame it on the wind or another outside force, he said.

“There were some things we showed him, though, that he could just not disprove or find another explanation for,” Perez said. “He would just say ‘well that could have been anything’ and not admit he was wrong.”

He said the main reason he has continued investigating the paranormal is to understand death better and what comes afterward.

Jesse Castro, a sophomore geology major from Las Vegas, said he believes there is not enough evidence to know if ghosts exist for sure.

However, he said he sometimes gets chills down his back or the feeling someone is watching him, so he does not necessarily think they do not exist.

“I don’t personally believe that anyone can see ghosts,” he said. “But I definitely think you can feel them — everyone is entitled to their own opinion though.”

Family with 12 sons awaits baby 13 ROCKFORD, Mich. (AP) — A western Michigan couple with 12 sons is expecting baby No. 13, and even though they’re sticking to their tradition of not finding out in advance whether they’re having a boy or girl, they said they’d be shocked if their streak is broken.

Jay and Kateri Schwandt’s baby is due May 9, The Grand Rapids Press reported. Even though they expect it will be another boy, the couple said they would welcome either into the family.

“If we were to have a girl, I think we would go into shock,” Kateri

Schwandt said. “It would probably be disbelief.”

If he had a choice, Jay Schwandt said he would love to have a girl, but they’re just “hoping for a healthy baby.”

Still, he would like to see the effect of adding a girl to the mix in a household with 12 boys.

“I’ve experienced all the boy stuff,” he said. “As long as we are having all these children, it would be really neat to experience the other side.”

The couple welcomed their twelfth son, Tucker, to the world on Aug. 4, 2013. Their oldest son is now 22

years old.

“The stuff that goes on in this house is all-boy — roughhousing and wrestling,” Jay Schwandt said. “If there was a little girl in there, I assume it would be different.”

Kateri Schwandt, after being the sole female in the family for more than two decades, said she would lean toward having one more boy.

“A little girl would be neat to have in the house, but a little boy kind of takes the pressure off,” she said. “We know what we are doing. Why change things up?”

“I think most places, if they’ve been around for any length of time, are haunted,” she said.

“The ghosts are not going to bother you if you don’t bother them. A lot of people don’t pay attention to them, if (the ghosts) look like people.”

Some ghosts are former professors and students, Purkiss said, while others are echoes and psychic memories.

For example, in the basement of the chemistry building, ghosts of students from the 1950s have reportedly been seen walking to class, Purkiss said, like an echo of something that occurred frequently.

“This happens a lot, and people don’t even know it because most ghosts that I have experienced aren’t shadows, shapes or orbs,” she said. “They look like people. For me, the only way I can tell that they are not people is when they do something a person can’t do, like walk through a door without opening it.”

The Chemistry building is one of the most haunted buildings on campus, Purkiss said.

She thinks it has a significant amount of supernatural activity because several pieces of equipment and instruments use large magnetic fields within the building, she said.

“Most of the dorms have ghosts attached,” Purkiss said. “There are ghosts all over campus. You’ll find them in the Biology building, in the Chemistry building, in Geosciences. For some reason, this little area seems to get a lot of that activity.”

Taylor Patterson, a sophomore biochemistry major from Rockwall, said he has not seen any ghosts in the Chemistry building or anywhere else on campus.

However, he said he does understand why some Tech faculty, staff and students might think there are ghosts in the building.

“The building is kind of creepy,” he said. “I think that is probably just the old lighting, though, and not anything supernatural.”

Purkiss, who said she has encountered spirits since she was a graduate student in the 1980s, has never felt threatened by a ghost.

While encountering a ghost can be creepy, Purkiss said one has never scared her, no matter how they died.

“When I was a graduate student in the 1980s, we had a foreign graduate student who committed suicide by jumping off the Biology building when he got a Dear John letter from his girlfriend,” she said. “One of the things he loved was the Carol of Lights, so every so often, he’ll show up during the Carol of Lights.”

The ghost of a tall, wellmannered man with an African accent can sometimes be seen at the annual Tech tradition one minute and disappear the next, Purkiss said.

On Dec. 4, 1967, graduate student Benjamin Loch murdered custodian Sarah Morgan and nearly decapitated her in the Geosciences building, according to an article in La Ventana yearbook.

Loch stole her key in order to steal final exam answers from

a professor’s office, according to the article, and was convicted in 1970, receiving 40 years in prison.

People have seen the ghost of Morgan and heard her scream, Purkiss said.

“I don’t view ghosts as anything other than people in another plane of existence,” she said. “I feel sorry for some of them, like the ghost of the custodian or the young man who committed suicide by jumping off a building, because that’s a sad way to end one’s life. I don’t really worry particularly about ghosts.”

Others have reported tales about a little boy who plays in the halls of Horn/Knapp Residence Halls, Purkiss said, and students wake up at night because they hear his ghost bouncing a ball in the hallway.

Neha Barrows, a freshman chemical engineering major from Houston, lives in Knapp Residence Hall and said she has not personally had any encounters with that particular ghost at Tech.

“I’ve heard some doors close by themselves,” she said. “I’ve never heard of a little kid bouncing a ball, but I still totally believe in ghosts.”

Not all ghosts are of the human

variety. The ghost of a cat whose owner died has been spotted in the bell tower of the Administration building, Purkiss said. “(The owner) went out of town and had someone take care of his cat,” she said. “He was killed in an automobile accident.

Well, the cat escaped and no one could find it. No one thought to look in the bell tower. They found the remains of the cat at some point in the bell tower and they say when you’re alone at night, you can hear the cat in the bell tower waiting for her owner to come back.”

Of all the ghost stories told on Tech campus, the ghost cat is her favorite, Purkiss said, because it is interesting without a backstory as tragic as a murder or suicide.

It is important to keep an open mind when it comes to the supernatural, Purkiss said, and realize there may be more than current students walking around Tech campus.

“I’m a scientist. I prefer scientific, logical proof, “ Purkiss said.

Attractions add nightmares and horror to Halloween

Halloween is based on the ancient Celtic holiday Samhain, a day when the dead were believed to walk amongst the living, according to the History Channel website.

The modern holiday celebrates with scary events and dressing up in costumes.

For some, their Halloween tradition includes attending haunted houses, such as Lubbock’s Nightmare on 19th Street and the Halls of Horror attractions, which are designed to scare visitors.

Wes Nessman, co-owner of Nightmare, said the actors inside the attraction volunteer at the start of the season and

receive benefits for performing.

“We put them in costume and try to put them in the right place for their body type and the character they want to play,” he said. “We occasionally have a person who really wants to be a specific character, and we try to suit them in that character if possible.”

Nightmare is composed of four attractions titled Blood Moon Manor, Skulllick, City of the Lost and Twisted Tales.

The actors are placed into a specific scene, Nessman said, but they are given the creative freedom to change their acting based on how the patrons react.

Nessman said. “This is a great way to put in the hours and really perfect what you’re doing. You’ll never get this amount of repetition in a normal rehearsal.”

The cast of characters ranges from children to senior citizens, and Nessman said the diversity adds to the family atmosphere of the actors.

Jordan Brown, a senior visual and performing arts major from Longview, works at Nightmare filming the actors and acting in the Twisted Tales attraction as needed.

“As an actor you need to understand what your environment is,” she said.

“In Twisted Tales, you know you’re going to be crazy. You’re in blacklight, and everything is in 3-D. It’s incredible how everything pops out at you, even the actors.”

The Halls of Horror attraction has themes including Psycho Ward, Zombie Epidemic and Circus of the Macabre, according to its website, and the actors are paid $7.25 an hour.

Many patrons get scared inside haunted houses, and Brown said she has seen many not make it through all four attractions at Nightmare.

Joshua Emminger, a freshman plant and soil science major from Dallas, said he does not get scared in haunted houses.

“I’ve gone with friends who have been really scared and wanted to leave,” he said. “I’ve always liked scary movies and haunted houses, so I guess I’m just hard to scare.”

While children younger than 12 are usually discouraged from entering haunted houses, Brown said, Nightmare will be hosting a trick-or-treat for children tonight outside of the attraction.

Nightmare opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and tickets cost $20 on Thursday and Sunday and $25 Friday and Saturday.

Halls of Horror opens at 7 p.m.

Thursday and Friday this week, and tickets cost $19.

“Everyone likes being scared,” Brown said. “It’s a different environment and it takes you out of your everyday life. As human beings, there’s a need for that every once in awhile. Organization brings movement to campus

At Columbia University, a student named Emma was sexually assaulted, and Emma physically carried the mattress she was assaulted on to show she has to live with her attack forever.

This spurred a worldwide movement called “Carry the Weight,” Lauran Schaefer, a communication studies graduate student from Sonora, said. The movement is to raise awareness for sexual assault on college campuses, Schaefer said.

On Wednesday, the Texas Tech Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance brought the movement to the Texas Tech campus.

FMLA brought a mattress outside the Student Union building and handed out fliers to raise awareness about the movement and let passersby sign the mattress to show support for the movement.

“Right now we’re participating in an international movement called Carry the Weight and #NoMeansNo

and I think collectively we’re all hoping this will shed some light on how we view rape culture on Tech campus,” Rebakah Holmes, a junior studio art and visual studies major from Dallas, said. ‘This is not a one-time thing this happens many places.”

The organization also promoted the app “Hollaback” to raise awareness, Schaefer said, and people can download the app and tell their story anonymously.

As a victim of sexual assault, Schaefer said events like this are important to her.

“It means raising awareness and finding allies, that’s really the only way I can stop it from happening to other people,” she said. “I also think these movements are important for making the transition from feeling like a victim to a survivor, to know that I’m empowered to stop these things from happening.”

After Schaefer’s most recent experience with sexual assault, her perspective changed, she said.

“I started to think, ‘This isn’t

normal. Why is this happening to me?’ and I found out this happens to everyone,” she said. “It happens to one in four women, and it happens to them multiple times.”

Katy Ballard, an instructor in the Women’s Studies Program and the School of Art, and other professors spoke about the event.

“One of my students brought it up in class and another student said, ‘Well I get that it wasn’t her fault that she was raped, but why did she invite the guy to her room?’” Ballard said. “I didn’t have to say anything — it was another student that said, ‘you can’t blame her, it’s not her fault.’”

After this conversation, Ballard went to Tricia Earl in the Women’s Studies department to ask for more information over the Carry the Weight movement, Ballard said.

“That was the first experience I had talking about this with my class and these are basically females,” she said. “Half of the class was saying no it’s not her fault and there were a few others commenting saying no she shouldn’t have had him in her room.

So that’s how I’ve talked about it in my own class.”

During the event, those walking by were offered the chance to sign the movement to show solidarity with the movement.

One of these students was Dalton Richardson, a senior sociology and political science major from McLean.

“I believe it’s important to combat rape culture in every way we can specifically on Tech’s campus where things like sexual assault prevention and awareness are starting to gain traction and more publicity,” he said.

“It’s important to uniquely take steps and combat rape culture in any way we can.”

The event is an eye opening experience on campus, Richardson said.

“It showed me there are more people on this campus that are aware of what’s going on and the issues facing the campus,” he said. “That’s a good thing because this is something that won’t end until we all decide it

The hope for Carry the Weight at Tech is to bring issues of rape culture to light and raise awareness through Emma’s artwork, Holmes said.

“This is telling of a lot of events that happen all over the country and

the world,” Holmes said. “She has to carry it by herself unless somebody offers and that is very telling of rape culture in itself. You’re carrying it on your own unless somebody offers to help you.” ➤➤kbarton@dailytoreador.com

Monster Dash runners celebrate Halloween with 5K

The Texas Tech Triathlon Club hosted its second annual Monster Dash 5K at 6 p.m. on Wednesday starting at the Urbanovsky Park Pavilion.

Joey De Fazio, a senior mechanical engineering major from The Woodlands and president of the Triathlon Club, said the club organized the 5K last year as a different type of fundraiser.

“We wanted to do a fundraiser that was more than just selling shirts and merchandise with our logo,” he said.

“We wanted to involve Texas Tech students as well as the local community.

A 5K is plenty of work to plan, and it’s a good way to get people involved.”

Approximately 35 people signed up for the race and runners had the opportunity to sign up in advance or at the actual race.

This year the club also organized a food drive for South Plains Food Bank, and runners who brought at least three cans of food paid only $15 to register instead of $20.

Viral video documents New York City street harassment NEW YORK (AP) — A video recording the comments a woman hears as she walks around the nation’s biggest city is a testament to the pervasiveness of street harassment women face, its creators said Wednesday.

The comments come continuously as the woman walks through the streets of Manhattan — “What’s up, Beautiful?” and “Smile!” — and there’s even a stretch when a man just silently walks right next to her for several minutes.

The video, shot over 10 hours one day in neighborhoods all over the borough and edited down to a 2-minute final product, has set off a storm of outrage on its way to more than 10 million views since it was released online Tuesday.

“This is having a very serious impact on the way we live our lives,” said Emily May, executive director of Hollaback!, the anti-street harassment organization that put out the video.

The footage, which was shot and edited by Rob Bliss, was captured by a camera Bliss had in his backpack as he walked several feet of front of actress Shoshana Roberts, who was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and walked silently along.

At no point did Roberts make eye contact with any of the men she passed or talk to any of them. That didn’t stop the comments from coming. When she didn’t respond, one man told her, “Somebody’s acknowledging you for being beautiful. You should say thank you more!”

Collins gives vast Alamo collection to Texas SAN ANTONIO (AP) — British pop star Phil Collins on Tuesday handed over his vast collection of artifacts related to the Battle of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution to the state of Texas.

Collins was in San Antonio to donate what’s considered the world’s largest private collection of Alamo artifacts. It includes a fringed leather pouch and a gun used by Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie’s legendary knife and letters from garrison commander William B. Travis.

“There’s things in there that will make your mouth drop,” Collins said.

The 1980s pop artist and Genesis singer-drummer has joked that he spent all the money he made from music on artifacts related to the 1836 battle in which 1,500 Mexican troops laid siege to 200 Texans.

The collection was given to Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, the state steward of the Alamo who is pushing for a new historical center that would house Collins’ collection.

“Texans are deeply indebted to Phil Collins,” Patterson said.

“He is giving us back our heritage.

Now these Texas treasures need a home where all can see them and study from them and learn about how Texans won our liberty.”

Collins, who’s a Grammy and Academy Award winner, donated a collection of more than 200 items for display. Five crates full

of artifacts were unloaded from a cargo truck Tuesday.

“This completes the journey for me. I’m 64. When I was 5 or 6 years old, this thing began,” Collins said of his fascination with the Alamo.

Patterson said it will likely take at least five years to raise the millions of dollars needed to design and build a center to house and display the collection.

Fazio said. “That’s why we included the canned food drive. It’s a way to benefit both students and the community.”

Various members of the Triathlon Club volunteered at the event, and they helped runners follow the race route and manned water stations.

Sarah Brown, a senior nutrition and dietetics major from Hereford, said the club focused on improving the race and getting more people to participate this year.

“Marketing is a big deal for us,” she said. “One of the first things we did was design posters and put them around campus. We also redesigned

the course because we had a lot of complaints from last year.”

The runners were encouraged to wear costumes to celebrate the Halloween theme of the 5K, and many of the volunteers were dressed up.

Lee Larimore, a community member who works out at the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center, ran the 5K with his dog that was dressed in a Buzz Lightyear costume.

“This is my second 5K, and I wanted to bring my dog to this one,” he said. “I’ve lost 30 pounds since August and my motivation for running is to get healthier.”

The participants received T-shirts and food, and Brown said they played music throughout the run to make the atmosphere more fun.

The money from the fundraiser goes toward travel expenses for the team when they travel to different competitions such as regionals and nationals.

“I like the environment of triathlons because it’s good for me to work out,” Brown said. “It’s also good for my health to be spending time with good people. It’s my life, and I wouldn’t trade being on the team for anything.”

The team practices every day of

the week except Friday, she said, and members focus on either running, cycling or swimming at each practice.

Prospective members do not need to have a background in triathlons, and Brown said she had never competed in a triathlon before joining the team.

“We don’t have any requirements for joining the team,” De Fazio said.

“We encourage people starting from zero. We build you up from the start of the semester until as long as you want to go. How much you put into it is how much you get out.”

“We just didn’t execute on the easy things we should have done.”

Douglass started the match with 14 kills and no errors and was on pace for one of the most accurate performance in school history, according to a Tech Athletics news release. She ended the night with 16 kills, two errors, and a hitting percentage of .438.

(AP) — Playoff spreads championship hope and big games Back when the Bowl Championship Series decided major college football’s champion, its defenders would talk about how it enhanced the regular season and how a larger playoff would take away from it.

That wasn’t true, and now there’s proof.

By expanding the postseason ever so slightly to add two games, the College Football Playoff has widened the field, given far more teams championship hopes and created

more big games.

With 18-one loss teams and only three unbeatens in FBS, there is reason to think even a conference champion with two losses could have a chance to reach the first football final four.

“When it’s all said and done there’s going to be a lot of two-loss teams,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Wednesday. “We’re trying to position ourselves to be the best.”

Swinney’s Tigers are off his weekend so he’ll get to take in some pivotal contests with playoff implications that most didn’t see coming in September.

No. 10 TCU (6-1, 3-1) is at No. 20 West Virginia (6-2, 4-1) in a matchup of Big 12 bounce-back teams. The Horned Frogs and Mountaineers combined for eight victories last season.

The winner will still control its future in the Big 12.

In the Pac-12, No. 18 Utah (6-1, 3-1) visits No. 15 Arizona State (6-1, 4-1). The Utes missed the postseason last year. The Sun Devils played for the Pac-12 title, but replaced almost their entire defense and quarterback Taylor Kelly has missed a chunk of the season.

Red Raiders continue longstanding rivalry

At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Texas Tech will take on its biggest rival, Texas, in the first Big 12 Conference night game of the season at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The Longhorns lead the all-time series against the Red Raiders 4815, including winning the last five meetings dating back to 2009.

Junior center Jared Kaster said he gets pumped up for every game, but the Lone Star Rivalry game takes it to another level.

“Texas has always been a prestigious university that has always been around and had a good program. Growing up you always see Texas in the limelight,” he said. “The university has always been a big school, a big football team that’s always been in the talk, and for us kids growing up, and I

think that would be a big thing for us to kind of kick back our season, to finish out strong.”

The in-state rivalry between the two schools began back in 1928, when the Tech team was called the Matadors.

Texas started off with a 12-0 win and went on to claim the first seven games of the series.

In 1955, when Tech’s enrollment was estimated to be a record high of around 7,000, the Red Raiders traveled to Austin and defeated the Longhorns for the first time ever, 20-14, in their season opener, according to the student newspaper.

The Longhorns won the next eight games against Tech before the Red Raiders pulled off a 19-13 upset in Austin in 1967.

Then-coach J.T. King said Tech played well enough to win the conference that year.

“It’s hard to point out every

outstanding individual,” he said.

“But there were a lot of them and I could talk all day about all of them.”

Tech also won the matchup the following year, and that two-year winning streak against Texas is tied with the longest streak still today.

Decades later in 1994, the Longhorns came to Lubbock leading the all-time series 33-10, but Tech had won the matchup the previous year.

The Red Raiders claimed their largest margin of victory ever that year over their rival with a 33-9 win.

The game marked the second time in history that Tech held Texas to under 10 points, according to the student newspaper.

In 2002, the Red Raiders junior quarterback Kliff Kingsbury earned his only victory against the Longhorns with a 42-38 win.

Former Texas coach Mack Brown said his team game planned

against Kingsbury, but he beat anything they tried.

“We tried everything and he whipped everything we tried,” Brown said in a Tech Athletics news release. “We’re really disappointed, but give them credit.”

Kingsbury threw for 473 yards and six touchdowns against thenNo. 4 Texas, ending their hopes for a national championship.

On Nov. 1, 2008, No. 1 Texas and No. 6 Tech matched up again, putting their 8-0 records on the line.

With 1:29 left in the game, the Longhorns took a 33-32 lead. That proved to be enough time for Tech quarterback Graham Harrell and wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

With just a few seconds left, Harrell threw to Crabtree, who was able to shake off two defenders and run into the end zone to win the game for the Red Raiders.

Current Tech offensive coordinator Eric Morris jokingly said Monday that since Crabtree was covered on the play, he was wide open in the end zone.

In the middle of a Heisman-like season, Crabtree said he saw the end result happening before he took the field for the final drive.

“On the sideline, I kind of dreamed that I would catch a pass and go in the end zone for a gamewinning score,” he said. “I do that, like every game, but it happened.

It kind of shocked me.”

Red Raider fans rushed the field and tore down the goalpost with their national championship hopes still alive.

Junior running back DeAndre Washington said he remembers watching the 2008 game and it was one of the main reasons he came to play at Tech.

“I was watching on TV,” Wash-

ington said. “I wasn’t really too fond of Texas Tech at the time but I saw how the place erupted after that catch and I thought that must be an amazing place. Come to find out, I came here a couple years later.”

Since 2008, Tech has found themselves on the losing side of the rivalry every year, including a 41-16 loss to end last season.

Saturday’s game will be exactly six years after the famous 2008 upset as the Red Raiders will attempt to snap the losing streak.

As a veteran player, Washington said Texas is a team that he is dying to finally beat.

“It’d be huge. Since I’ve been here I haven’t had the opportunity to beat those guys. It is definitely something I have on my bucket list,” he said. “It would be huge, not only for the team, but for the city as well. I’m looking forward to it.” ➤➤jkrakosky@dailytoreador.com

(AP) — Baylor has gotten into quite a pattern over the past few seasons, with deep NCAA tournament runs every other year.

So what happens after the Bears lose more than half of their scoring and half of their rebounding from another Sweet 16 team? They are about to find out.

“I think with our team this year, the great thing is we have a lot of versatility and a lot of depth,” coach Scott Drew said. “This year’s team, they compete, they work hard every day, and at the same time, really all of them enjoy see-

ing their teammates score. There’s not a ball stopper or someone that really demands the ball.”

Senior point guard Kenny Chery returns, but the Bears lost three other starters who averaged double-figure scoring last season — big men Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin, along with 3-point shooting threat Brady Heslip.

“Our plan is to play faster,” said Chery, who averaged 11.5 points and 4.7 assists a game last season after transferring from junior college. “We’re going to have to play faster ... and just push the ball.”

Missing Denver Broncos fan says he had ‘fill of football’ DENVER (AP) — A man whose disappearance during last week’s Denver Broncos game touched off an extensive search by family and friends told police he had “his fill of football” and walked and hitchhiked about 130 miles to a city in southern Colorado.

Paul Kitterman, 53, was found safe Tuesday night in a parking lot in Pueblo after police got a tip that he was in the city. The construction worker looked tired and had trouble walking but a medical exam found

him to be otherwise unharmed, Pueblo police Sgt. Franklyn Ortega said.

Kitterman told police that he had not watched television in several days and was not aware that people were looking for him.

“He said he had his fill of football and that he likes to walk and wander, and he was looking for a warmer place,” Ortega said.

The tip on Kitterman’s whereabouts came from a friend’s ex-wife, who reported picking him up at the

Salvation Army in Pueblo and dropping him off at a hotel, Ortega said.

The sergeant didn’t have other details about his connection to the woman.

He said police did not plan to file charges.

“He’s a grown man. If that’s what he wants to do, he can do it,” Ortega said, adding that authorities put Kitterman up in a hotel until his family could pick him up.

Family and friends had been searching for Kitterman since he

was last seen leaving his seat to meet friends at halftime of Thursday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers at Sports Authority Field.

They filed a missing persons report with Denver police, scoured the sprawling stadium, called local hospitals and detox centers, and taped fliers around the city. Police had previously said they did not suspect foul play, and Kitterman’s stepson noted that his stepfather did not have any known health or personal problems.
