Democrat Zachary ReamesZepeda is set to announce his candidacy for the Texas House District 84, making him the second to announce a campaign against current Representative John Frullo. The announcement is scheduled to occur at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at the Phea Boys and Girls Club located on 1801 E. 24th St., according to a Zepeda campaign news release. The other candidate challenging Frullo is Democrat Samantha Carillo Fields, who announced her campaign in September, according to Lubbockonline.com. Frullo has been in his current seat in the House since 2010, according to the Texas Legisla-

ture’s website. Zepeda’s campaign will mostly be centered around fighting off Frullo’s type of political rhetoric, according to the release. Zepeda said in the release, Frullo is currently at odds with what the Founding Fathers of the United States had in mind when it comes to American democracy. “The political process is not a spectator sport. It is built around the will of the people, which means we all bear ownership for the results it produces,” Zepeda said in the release. “I have chosen to fulfill my responsibility, by running for state representative and challenge an officeholder who walks hand-inhand with Donald Trump.” @MichaelCantu DT

or the 2017-2018 Texas Te c h m e n ’s b a s k e t b a l l team, the Red Raiders are ready and poised for the season that quickly approaches and starts on Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the United Supermarkets Arena. On Thursday, Oct. 19, the Red Raiders were pegged to be the seventh seed in the Big 12 Preseason Conference Poll, according to Tech Athletics. With his second season leading the Red Raiders, Tech coach Chris Beard said he is optimistic about the season; the differences between physical strengths as well as new additions should get Tech on track to an NCAA Tournament appearance. “I think we are more athletic this year. We have the chance to be a more defensive team,” Beard said. “Really the most impressive thing is our young guys really contributing, and I think some of these freshmen are going to play real minutes.” The new freshman additions Beard mentioned include Zhaire Smith, Alexa Vilarino, Malik Ondigo, Jarret Culver and David Moretti, among others. One huge addition for Tech is the three-star commit Malik Ondigo who stands at 6 feet 10 inches and weighs 210 pounds, according to Tech Athletics. A f t e r c h o o s i n g Te c h o v e r schools such as Purdue, Kansas and Kansas State, Ondigo said his decision was simple because of the coaching staff and the chance to contribute for the Red Raiders. “Coach Beard and the relationship I built up with him (was a factor),” Ondigo said. “I just saw what he did in the Big 12 and how talented the team was. And these weren’t even players

he recruited, and I saw how well he did. I feel like he’s going to do amazing things in the Big 12, and that’s why I chose Tech.” After posting a 18-14 overall record last season and a 6-12 record in conference play, senior guard Niem Stevenson said being older and wiser will help the team grow on the court this season. “Knowing the offense better, actually just knowing the whole system within the Big 12,” Stevenson said. “Also going to school, managing my time. It helps you mentally.” Last season, Stevenson played in 30 games, averaged 8.6 points per game, and was third on the team with 18 steals, according to Tech Athletics. The Red Raiders are also bringing back some memorable faces in senior forward Zack Smith, senior guard Justin Gray and senior guard Keenan Evans, according to Tech Athletics. Last season, Evans led the team with 15.4 points per game and was also a defensive stopper with 31 steals, which marked second on the team. Smith was one of the most dominant presences on the block in the Big 12 Conference. He started in all 31 games for Tech and led the team with 43 blocks, 143 defensive rebounds and 80 offensive rebounds, according to Tech Athletics. Last season, the Red Raiders suffered close losses to topranked teams such as Kansas, Baylor and West Virginia, according to Tech Athletics. For instance, Tech suffered a one-point loss to then ranked No. 3 Kansas, 80-79, on Saturday, Feb. 11, in the United Supermarkets Arena. Smith said regardless of the tough losses last season, he and the rest of the team are ready to get back on the court and compete.
