n Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium, the Oklahoma State Cowboys put up 70 points against Texas Tech, 56 of which were allowed by the defense. First-year defensive coordinator David Gibbs said allowing explosive plays in the fourth quarter of a close game was embarrassing, and he takes the blame for it. “They played hard. They did it again,” he said. “I say it every week. For whatever reason, they go crazy and didn’t finish the game, obviously, with all those big plays at the end of it, which is embarrassing. It’s not acceptable.” While the Big 12 Conference’s lowest-ranked defense allowed a high number of points, it did have a few positive takeaways from the Halloween game. On the Cowboys’ opening drive, the Red Raider defense forced a punt after allowing 38 yards and nearly recovering a fumble. Tech responded by putting
the team up 7-0 almost immediately. On Oklahoma State’s next drive, the defense got another stop when redshirt freshman Dakota Allen caught his first career interception. In the first quarter, the Cowboy offense was limited to 30 rushing yards on 10 carries. The Red Raiders also stopped the run in the second quarter as the Cowboys ran the ball eight times for 18 yards, although they did allow nearly 130 passing yards in the quarter. Senior linebacker Micah Awe said it is nearly impossible to shut down any offense in the conference, but the defense showed positives in the first half it can build on. “Offenses in the Big 12 are always going to make plays on you. It’s all about being consistent,” he said. “That last game told us we have to be more consistent. Just like this next game, we’ve got to be as consistent as we can be and get the ball back to the offense.”
