new Texas Tech basketball practice facility for the men’s and women’s teams will be built west of the United Supermarkets Arena. Plans for the facility were announced during a Tech Athletics news conference on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The facility will be named after its largest donor, Dustin R. Womble. “What this facility will do for us, it will allow us to recruit the best players in the country and to win Big 12 Championships and compete on the highest stage,” Tech coach Chris Beard said. “It will also allow us to develop the players that we have. Both are equally important: recruiting and developing.” The facility has a projected cost of $23 million, with $12 million already promised from private donors, Tech Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. Of that $12 million, Womble himself has donated $10 million to his alma mater. “Coach Beard loves this school, first of all. He wanted to be here. It was an awkward situation for him to get here, but this is where he ultimately wanted to be,” Womble said. “He got a commitment from Kirby (Hocutt) that he would get the facilities and all the support he needed to be successful at the highest level.” Tech will continue to seek donations for the remaining $11 million needed for the project, with fundraising for the facility continuing to meet the $23 million goal, Hocutt said. The facility is part of Tech Athletics’ Campaign for Fearless Champions, according to Tech Athletics, and is planned to be one of the most cuttingedge practices facilities in college basketball. Hocutt said the athletic department hopes to have the majority of the project’s funds by

the summer. “Fundraising is never easy, but we are so fortunate that we have those who share this vision and are interested in making this a reality,” Hocutt said. The announcement of the new basketball facility comes less than a month after the ribboncutting of the new Sports Performance Center, which was approved in December 2015. The construction of that $48-million facility took more than one and a half years to reach completion, according to Tech Athletics. The proposed facility will have state-of-the-art conditioning, workout, recovery and practice facilities for the Red Raider basketball teams, Hocutt said. It will also allow both basketball teams and the volleyball team to have separate practice courts. Currently, all the three teams share the United Supermarkets Arena court for practices. The teams having to split practice time at the United Supermarkets Arena is not ideal, Hocutt said, and this project will help alleviate that issue. “When you are competing at this level, you have to have a practice and training facility available to your student athletes each and every day,” Hocutt said. “This will be a state-of-the-art facility, but at the core of this facility is the practice court for our student athletes to use each and every day.” The design firm in charge of the project is Populous, a sports-facility architecture firm that has designed multiple facilities and stadiums around the world. “There will be some cutting-edge innovation that we implement in this facility, that are still in the discussion stages, that I think will set the bar for others to try to emulate with their facility projects in the years ahead,” Hocutt said. @AustinWattsDT

Texas Tech was named a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017. Tech also received a silver designation, which is a step up from the bronze designation the university was awarded by the organization in 2013. Texas Tech has been named a Bicycle Friendly University and awarded a silver designation by the League of American Bicyclists. Tech has received a similar designation in the past, having been awarded the bronze designation in 2013, according to a Tech news release. This award comes after changes were made around the campus by various entities and organizations such as the Outdoor Pursuits Center, Grounds Maintenance, Student Government Association and Citibus. This designation means Tech has met all five criteria required

for a bicycle-friendly designation, according to the release. Those criteria are: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation. “This designation benchmarks the university’s efforts compared to the rest of the country,” Stacy Stockard, media relations for Tech Transportation & Parking Services, said in the release. “It’s a great feeling to be at the top for Texas. We also want students and employees to know that bicycling issues are an important part of the campus transportation discussion.” @MichaelCantuDT

College Choice recognizes Tech as prime school for veterans College Choice recently named Texas Tech to its list of 50 Best Colleges for Veterans. Ranked 22nd on the list, Tech received a College Choice Score of 88.58. There are several factors that play into the rankings, according to the College Choice website. However, one of the most important factors is how concerned the university is with supporting its student veterans. “Each school has its own unique way of doing things, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is that the school’s student veterans believe that they are part of a broader, campus team, and that the school does in fact have their six,” according to the website. Stressing the difficulties student veterans can face when transitioning from military life to civilian life, it is crucial that universities help make that

transition easier, according to the website. One of the reasons Tech was named to the list is because of the Military & Veteran Programs. Through this program, several events and social opportunities help connect the student veteran population on Tech’s campus. “One of the most popular programs centered around these values is their Te c h Ve t s B o o t camp,” according to the website, “which occurs before the start of the semester and helps incoming student veterans or active service members with engaging in best practices during their transition into college life at Texas Tech. It is billed as a great way to connect and engage with other veterans on campus, especially before the difficulties of campus and academic life get in the way.” @AveryAikenDT
