Consent is ... Knowledge of consent helps bystander education By KAITLIN BAIN News editor

Earlier this year, social worker Feminista Jones saw a mother, pushing a stroller, assaulted on the street. Instead of walking away and assuming what was taking place was not something she needed to be involved in, she went to the woman and asked her, “You OK, sis?” Those three words and Jones’ knowledge of what consent is and is not saved the woman and began a movement, Tricia Earl, unit coordinator for Women’s Studies program, said. “An informed, sober, freely-given, ongoing and enthusiastic yes,” is Texas

Tech’s definition of consent, according to the Tech Sexual Misconduct website. Earl said each part of this sentence is important and pivotal when defining consent. An informed yes means the people involved know and recognize the possible positives and negatives to the situation they are entering, she said. Sophia Dominguez, president of the Tech Feminist Majority Alliance, said a problem college students experience is the idea that it is normal to make these kinds of decisions when drunk, but that is not the case and consent can only be given when both parties are sober.
