exas Tech senior running back DeAndre Washington made the school record books last week when he became the first Red Raider to run for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons since 1996. On Saturday, he made history again during his last game ever at Jones AT&T Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Patrick Mahomes II handed the ball off to Washington 27 times for 248 yards and three touchdowns. The yards were a career high for Washington. “It was awesome. (Washington) is a great guy, a great leader,” Mahomes II said. “He will be very missed next year. It was great for him to go out in the Jones like that. He loves Texas Tech and for him to go out like that was awesome.” The 248 rushing yards marked the most for a Tech player since Oct. 16, 1999, according to a Tech Athletics news release, and the seventh-most rushing yards ever for a Tech player. Even though Washington ran the ball 27 times, Tech coach Kliff Kings-

bury said the Red Raiders probably should have called his number a few more times. “We probably didn’t run it enough, honestly. We had a couple of negative plays trying to throw the ball and a couple of drives that we probably should have just let him keep going,” he said. “Very excited for him and proud of him on Senior Day to have such a night.” Of his 27 carries, none of them went for negative yardage. The senior running back ended up with 284 total yards, as he hauled in four catches for 36 yards. Washington got his productive day started with a 5-yard touchdown run on a misdirection play. On the second play of the next Red Raider drive, Washington showed off his speed and elusiveness by breaking four tackles en route to an 80-yard touchdown run, the longest run of his career.

Texas Tech honored veterans with various events last week including during a ceremony on Veterans Day, and it finished the week with the Military Appreciation Football Game on Saturday. Clint Young, a senior sociology and economics dual

major from Southlake and member of the Army ROTC program, said he enjoyed watching the military themed game last year. “Last year we had a bunch of members from the Wounded Warrior Project parachute into the game,” he said. “That was really awesome.” At the start of the game, two bomber jets flew over

Jones AT&T Stadium during “The Matador Song.’ The members of the Army ROTC Ranger Challenge team also got recognized on the field, and the Red Team finished fourth out of teams from eight states during the brigade competition Nov. 7 through Nov. 9.

Students, staff discuss One Love Week By EASTON WOLLNEY Staff WritEr

As the first One Love Week at Texas Tech came to an end, students and faculty members shared their experiences throughout the week. Toddrick Gotcher, an exercise and sport sciences graduate student from Garland and guard for the Tech basketball team, said he at-

tended workshops throughout the week and students on campus were excited about One Love Week. “It’s really been good and everybody’s excited for Texas Tech to have this One Love foundation on campus,” Gotcher said. His goal this week was to spread awareness about violence and signs of unhealthy relationships to

peers, Gotcher said. Kimberly Simón, director of the Risk Intervention and Safety Education Office, said screenings of the film “Escalation” took place inside the Student Union Building, the law school, Frazier Alumni Pavilion and residence halls throughout the week.

On Friday afternoon at Jones AT & T S t a d i u m , Te c h P r e s i d e n t Duane M. Nellis and Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt gave updates on all the new athletic facilities that are or will be built on campus in the coming years. The focal point of the news conference was to unveil a video and drawings of the Sports Performance Center. The center will contain an indoor football practice field, an indoor track facility, equipment facilities as well as new strength and conditioning rooms for student athletes. A retractable wall will be between the football and track facilities, according to the video that was shown. “This facility will house a new indoor football practice facility, which will be an important recruiting tool for our program and ensure that our football team will never have to be delayed or miss another practice,” Hocutt said. “I believe there have been six times this year where our football program has had to delay practice or even cancel practice due to weather.” It was announced the new facilities

will be named the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. Athletics Complex, which will be located south of Jones AT&T Stadium. Whitacre is a Tech graduate and former CEO and president of AT&T. He has been a key donor to Tech Athletics, Hocutt said. “The Whitacre Athletic Complex will be the hub,” he said. “It will be the primary place where the majority of our student athletes spend all of their time.” The complex will replace the Athletic Training Center, or “The Bubble.” Tech Athletics has a goal to open the new facility in Fall 2017. On the track side of the facility, a 200-meter indoor track with seating for approximately 2,500 people will be installed. “This incredible new facility will be the best of its kind in the Big 12 Conference and one of the best in the country,” Hocutt said. “It will allow us to host the Big 12 Conference Championship.” Track and field coach Wes Kittley said the new facilities will not only help with Big 12 events, but will attract some of the best high school meets.
