MEN’S BASKETBALL
Williams steps up as team leader By BRANDON SOLIZ Staff Writer
Texas Tech basketball tipped off Friday to begin the 2015-2016 basketball season, and the Red Raiders were led in the matchup by senior guard Devaugntah Williams. The Red Raiders had a close game against Tech head coach Tubby Smith’s alma mater, High Point University, topping the Panthers 77-73. “It’s hard to simulate the intensity level that you have to play with against a good team like High Point,” Smith said. “We’re happy to get a good win, and I think this is just what the doctor ordered.” High Point showed its ability to compete at a high level by jumping out to an early lead. Tech was just able to outscore the Panthers in the first half, taking a 32-31 lead into the locker room. The Red Raiders were 12 of 23 from the field in the first half and 3 of 10 from behind the arc, and Williams had two of the three 3-pointers for Tech. He led the team with eight points in the first period. Tech came out of the locker
room and quickly found themselves continuing to battle it out with High Point. Williams, however, ignited the Tech offense and increased the Tech lead to as many as 11 points in the second half.
The whole night I kept saying, ‘We’re not losing this game.’ We didn’t want to lose and everyone was cheering, and it played a big role.” DEVAUGNTAH WILLIAMS SENIOR GUARD The senior finished the game with a team-leading 26 points and eight rebounds. This was the seventh time Williams has scored more than 20 points in a game at Tech. “The whole night I kept saying, ‘We’re not losing this game,’” Williams said. “We didn’t want to
lose and everyone was cheering and it played a big role.” Tech trailed by as many as seven points in the game and High Point fought until the final buzzer, with its last made shot coming with six seconds left in the game. Williams said the intensity level for the team came up in the second half and not as early as it should have. “We just kept playing as hard as we could because they’re a good team,” Williams said. “I saw (the intensity) come up in the second half when we started making the important plays.” Smith said Williams had some flashes of his talent last year and has gotten better for this season. “And he showed he’s capable of making those shots. He showed it last year, you know, making eight threes in a game,” Smith said. “He’s capable of having the big games like that and he’s going to be counted on, especially when other guards are struggling or when we shoot the ball the way we did the other night.”

Students, alumni show support for Nail on website By JENNIFER ROMERO L a Vida editor
Last Tuesday, Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration Dean Lance Nail announced he will resign from his position effective Dec. 31. Nail was accused during the summer of changing four students’ grades from the spring semester, and a Texas Tech committee investigated the allegations and released its findings last Tuesday.
The report stated the committee did not find any evidence that the students’ original grades were given with discrimination by the professor, which was the reason Nail said he allowed five students to take a makeup exam to improve their grades without going through the university grade appeal process. Students, faculty and alumni have had different responses to the report, and many have shown Nail support through using
#IStandWithNail on social media and by posting on the website IStandWithNail.com. Riley Earnest, a freshman marketing major from Plains, said she supports Nail and thinks he is an amazing person. “As long as I’ve known him, he has always shown a genuine love for his students and for his college,” she said. “He was one of the reasons why I decided to attend Tech and go to the business school. He is one of

DOJAS The match continued with a super tiebreaker, according to the release, in which the two duos split the first four points of the match. Just as they had done in the semifinal matchup against New Mexico, Dojas and Soares gained momentum and prevailed with a 7-2 run and won the match by a score of 10-7 over Clark and Kelly. “I’m very proud of and very
excited for Hugo and Felipe,” Tech coach Brett Masi said in an interview with Tech Athletics. “The goal was to come home with a SOARES national title, and they got it done. This has to feel good for them after being so close at the NCAAs last year.” Dojas and Soares finished the fall season with the championship and will continue their senior seasons on Jan. 15 when Tech plays host to Pacific, New Mexico and Arizona throughout a three-day period at the McLeod Tennis Center. @BSoliz_DT
