Thanksgiving break begins Wednesday and many students are leaving their dorms, apartments and residencies unattended as they head back home for the holidays.

Texas Tech University Student Housing does not require students to leave their respective halls for the break, but those who wish to remain in their residence halls must fill out a Thanksgiving break hall access form no later than Monday, according to the housing website.

Before students leave the residence halls they must check out with their community adviser who will conduct a safety check, and all violators will be documented by the CA, according to the Tech Housing website.

Students are advised to unplug everything in their rooms with the exception of refrigerators, take out all trash, turn off all lights, close all windows and blinds and also let their CA know before they leave, according to the website.

As students prepare to drive home for the holidays, there are many different factors they may not be used to driving with that can impact their drive home.

Doug Shupe, AAA Texas and New Mexico public relations specialist, said as a result of the U.S.’s economic recovery and falling gas prices, it is anticipated that there will be a record number of people on the roadways traveling to different places this holiday season.

“People are more optimistic this season,” he said. “They want to travel and go on trips.”

As a result of this and the weather changes that will be occurring this holiday season, he said, there are many travel tips students should keep in mind when traveling home.

These tips include making sure the student as well as any passengers are buckled up, the student is paying attention to speed signs posted, especially in road work zones and keeping his or her eyes off of the screen.

Students prepare for pharmacy careers

If a student does get stranded, they can also call someone from the Road Raiders Safe Travel network, a network of Texas Tech parents and alumni that can help students who are having car trouble or just need a place to rest for a few hours.

Dan Flynn, Hertz senior vice president of North America Rent-a-Car Operations, said his company, partnered with AAA, prepared a list of helpful hints that travelers should remember when traveling in possibly icy weather, including watch weather reports before getting on the road, making sure the vehicle being driven is weather friendly and not getting lost in a storm.

“Since it can be hard to anticipate the conditions you may encounter while driving this winter, particularly in an unfamiliar area,” he said, “it is always important to be prepared for any hazardous or unexpected weather.”

Jenna Bright, a sophomore English major from Lampasas, said this will be her first time driving home and she is nervous about the drive.

Her mom has been prepping her about what to do if she gets in an accident, she said, but she hopes she will not have to use that knowledge.

“I’ve never driven this far by myself before,” she said. “In the past my older sister was at Tech so she would just take me home with her. This time it will be just me driving. Wish me luck, I guess.”

Texas Tech can be a steppingstone for some students to pursue further edu-

cation in graduate school, law school or medical school.

The Pre-Pharmacy Club focuses on keeping its members up-to-date on the admission process for pharmacy schools,

according to its website, and it also provides community service opportunities.

Myla Bhakta, a senior biology major from Memphis, Texas, has been a member of the club for two years.

“This is a club oriented toward pharmacy school and getting us used to the process,” she said. “I’m interested in pharmacy, so the club is helpful for me.”

Representatives from different pharmacy schools speak at the club meetings, and this gives the members access to information on schools other than the School of Pharmacy at Tech Health Sciences Center.

The club participates in multiple community service events throughout the year, and Bhakta said she has tried to increase the club’s community involvement as the community service chair.

“We do a lot of volunteer work in the Lubbock community,” she said. “We volunteer at Salvation Army, Saving Grace, Pitbull Rescue and the Garrison Center.

We also volunteer at so many others.”

The organization has approximately 100 members, Bhakta said, and approximately 60 of those are active in the club.

Ethan Montgomery, a senior microbiology major from Copperas Cove, said he hopes to become an officer for the club in the future.

“I want to do pharmacy, and I figured this would look good on a pharmacy application,” he said. “You can always talk to one of the officers and they’ll tell you what you need to do. Many of them have already been accepted, so they’ll tell you the real requirements for applying.”

The club also informs its members of the specific requirements for each pharmacy school, and Montgomery said the members can take the classes their top

school requires while at Tech.

Being involved in the club adds to an individual’s well-roundedness, Bhakta said, and the community service involvement looks good on pharmacy school applications.

“I didn’t realize how much goes into applying for pharmacy school,” Montgomery said. “I didn’t know there was a group interview where you have to solve a problem with your group members. Then you have your individual interview. You need specific types of letters of recommendation. The meetings are informative even though the process is so stressful.”

The club also allows students to network with other prospective pharmacy students, and Montgomery said he has met people in the club who understand the difficulty of his classes.

Jasmyn Rosado, a junior microbiology major from Austin, joined the club after transferring to Tech this year.

“All the members have common interests,” she said. “We all have hopes of going to pharmacy school or becoming a technician. I’ve made a handful of friends from the club, and it’s nice to have some of them in my classes.”

The Pre-Pharmacy Club usually meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in the Chemistry building in room 113, and Bhakta said new members are always welcome.

“I feel like this semester, members have had more opportunities to be active,” she said. “The club is a great way to get involved in the community and meet people who are interested in the same program as you are. The ultimate goal is to build friendships, gain leadership skills and learn about the pharmacy field.” ➤➤jromero@dailytoreador.com

Buses allow students to travel home for break

With Thanksgiving break approaching, many students will be traveling home for the holiday.

Texas Tech partners with Break Shuttle to provide students with bus routes to larger Texas cities during the break.

Christine Self, associate director of Parent and Family Relations, said Tech started a busing program in 2008.

“We’ve been using Break Shuttle since 2011,” she said. “We wanted students to have an opportunity to travel home without having to drive themselves or purchase an expensive airline ticket. The bus program is especially helpful for Thanksgiving because there’s such a quick turnaround to come back.”

Break Shuttle is the largest provider of busing services for universities, according to the Break Shuttle website, and partners with

other universities such as Auburn and North Texas.

Each university chooses its own destinations, and the routes for Tech end in major cities in Texas.

“We chose our cities based on demand,” Self said. “A lot of our students come from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso, so those are the cities we chose to provide service to.”

Students can purchase tickets online at the Break Shuttle website, and they need to buy two separate tickets if they are riding the bus round-trip.

There are still tickets available for the Dallas and El Paso routes for Thanksgiving, Self said, and the one-way tickets cost $79 and $89 respectively.

“We have three or four buses going to Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio,” Self said.

“There is one bus that goes to El Paso. Right now we have over 600 students registered for the Thanks-

giving trips.”

Tickets for the trips are nonrefundable, according to the Break Shuttle website, and this helps keep the ticket price affordable.

Jalen Davis, a junior mechanical engineering major from Dickinson, said he drives home by himself for Thanksgiving.

“I live right by Houston, so I could take the bus there if I wanted,” he said. “It seems like a good option for students, but I prefer having the freedom of taking my own car.”

Parents also enjoy having the bus routes available, and Self said it allows some students to go home who otherwise would be unable to.

This year, Tech is also providing Break Shuttle routes for winter break.

“We don’t really know what kind of response we’re going to get, but we wanted to try it out this year,” she said. “We had a number of parents who called our office asking about shuttles for the semester

break. We were skeptical about it in the past because of scheduling, but so many people were interested in it.”

For winter break, the buses will depart on Dec. 11 and will go to San Antonio/Austin, Houston

and Dallas.

The tickets to San Antonio/ Austin and Dallas currently cost $69, and the Houston tickets cost $89 for a one-way trip.

“In the winter, you never know how the weather is going to be,”

As the semester winds down and finals loom, students look forward to one more break before finals week: Thanksgiving.

It was just the two of us, but she still had turkey and ham and 10 different sides so I had food for months,” she said. “We try to keep the traditions even though it’s just the two of us.”

Wilson has a big family with many cousins, she said, so the only time they get together is during the holiday season.

Wilson is sad she will not get to see them at Thanksgiving this year, she said.

Many students living in a house live in the Tech Terrace neighborhood directly across from the university on 19th street, John Winker, an employee of the Tech Terrace Real Estate Agency, said.

Just like the Cottages, Tech Terrace Real Estate stresses that residents living in one of their homes should keep some lights on, especially the porch light, and keep the heater above 60 degrees in order to prevent pipes from freezing, as temperatures are expected be low over the break, he said.

Winker said he thinks students leaving their houses unattended over the break should leave on some music to make it seem like someone was home in order to prevent break-ins.

Texas Tech Police Department Administrative Captain Stephen Hinkle said students living on or off campus should take anything that they feel is irreplaceable with them over the break.

Students should be aware of the dangers of making it known on social media that their house has been left

unattended, he said.

“It would not be smart for students to advertise on social media that you’re leaving for an extended period of time,” Hinkle said. “You never know who is following you on social media feeds.”

Statuses and tweets can inadvertently indicate that your house is empty, and is an invitation for burglars, he said.

For additional information on preparing houses and dorms for the Thanksgiving break, students should check the University Student Housing website and also ask landlords, CAs and housing companies for any additional information.

Mistrial declared in plastic surgeon’s murder case LUBBOCK (AP) — A judge on Wednesday declared a mistrial in the case of a Texas plastic surgeon accused in a murder-for-hire plot to kill a pathologist who was dating his ex-girlfriend.

State District Judge Jim Bob Darnell announced the mistrial on the 17th day of Dr. Thomas Michael Dixon’s capital murder trial. Jurors deliberated about seven hours over two days but

couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict. “ We ’ r e r e l i e v e d a n d d i s appointed at the same time,” Dixon’s defense attorney, Dan Hurley, said.

Jury foreman Doug Moore said five jurors were convinced Dixon was guilty of capital murder, while two didn’t believe the circumstantial evidence proved his guilt beyond a reasonable

doubt. He said the two would not vote to convict Dixon of capital murder, murder or manslaughter, while the five others wanted to at least convict him of murder or manslaughter.

Lubbock County District Attorney Matt Powell would not say whether there will be a retrial.

He declined comment, citing Darnell’s ongoing gag order in the case.

Watching football provides benefits Erin A Wallace

merica’s sport has always been baseball, or so we were told, but not anymore. The Harris Poll has been surveying people on their sport of choice since 1985, and for the last 30 years it has been football, specifically NFL football.

According to the Harris Poll, “the NFL’s explosion in popularity is no more apparent than in the 2014 results. The NFL received more votes than the three runners up — MLB, college football and auto racing — combined…34 percent of Americans identify professional football as their favorite sport. This compared to only 16 percent for baseball.”

It is definitely safe to say America is a professional football nation now.

According to a Bleacher Report article, there are three main reasons that professional football has taken the prime spot in America’s hearts.

“The 90s created a sports vacuum for the NFL to eventually fill, expansion and rule changes create a more vibrant league and fantasy football creates a league-wide interest for causal fans.”

According to the article, “The NFL filled a vacuum created by labor strife and the exit of a few NBA icons. That coincided with a massive expansion and rules change by the NFL to make the game more appealing to average fans across the country.

Fantasy football, more than any other development, locked those fans in and gave them a reason to care about every single team across the league.”

NFL football needs to be embraced by and enjoyed by everyone. Watching professional football, aside from being a great pastime, can teach valuable life lessons. According to About.com, there are five life lessons that can be learned from watching NFL football:

“teamwork, discipline, goal setting, perseverance and a high you can’t buy.”

A Forbes article cites football as a valuable resource to learning how to build a successful business. It cites four “valuable business lessons to learn from football.” Football teaches us how to “build a successful team, (the need for) continuous training to develop skills, (the need to) prepare for each game and (how to) coach your team for success.”

“Each NFL team needs a group of players with complementary skills that together make a great team. In your business, it works the same way. You need skill players, strength players, a great quarterback and a staff of supporting coaches.”

No matter how many years an NFL player has played, they still show up each season well in advance for training. They work on their conditioning and skills. They review strategy and practice every day. You’ll never hear a professional athlete say “I don’t need to practice. I’ll just show up on game day and figure it out.”

Comparing football and business is easy because they are both competitive environments that thrive on challenge, considerable skills and opportunities.

According to a Forbes article, watching football can actually make you smarter. “Research since the 1990s has suggested that sports fans enjoy a similar mental experience while watching a game to that of athletes in

a game (minus the traumatic part, of course). When a fan watches a game, as one University of Chicago study showed, the same areas of the brain are activated as would be if that person were playing,” according to the article.

Dr. Sian Beilock from the University of Chicago is quoted saying, “Experience playing and watching sports has enduring effects on language understanding by changing the neural networks that support comprehension to incorporate areas active in performing sports skills.”

The Forbes article discussed that watching football “becomes an interactive social and mental experience that lets you flex different emotional and mental muscles.”

Watching professional football, contrary to popular belief, is not just a man’s pastime. According to an article

by The Washington Post, “women make up an estimated 45 percent of the NFL’s more than 150 million American fans and have become perhaps pro football’s most valuable players.”

A blog for women, called XO Jane, listed reasons that all women should watch the NFL: “being lazy, eating junk food and hot guys” were among those reasons. “Face it. Sunday’s never sounded so good.”

So whether you are man or woman, businessman or average Joe, football can and should be enjoyed by all.

The life lessons, the business lessons, the mental stimulation and the junk food should be reason enough to sit down and watch a few NFL games this Sunday. Professional football is America’s sport and we all need to join in the excitement.

Ferguson protesters, police should not resort to violence

O

n Monday, Missouri’s governor declared a state of emergency in case of violent protests after the decision of whether to indict police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of Michael Brown. The excess violence and chaos within city limits represents issues in society worldwide and a shadowing of the real problem.

Ferguson, Missouri, where a mere 21,000 people reside, continues to resort to civil disorder along with destruction of its own city to achieve some solution to the death of Brown.

The fear induced from the protests has left some members of the police force compelled to act unlawfully toward reporters and otherwise lawful citizens.

At an initial conference on August 16, the first state of emergency was called for and, according to CNN reports, some residents said law enforcement officers had instigated the violence with their military-like tactics.

After being arrested by local police, a German journalist said, “I’ve been in several conflict zones: I was in the Civil War regions in Georgia, the Gaza strip, illegally visited the Kaliningrad region when travel to the Soviet Union was still strictly prohibited for westerners, I’ve been in Iraq, Vietnam and in China, I’ve met Cuban dissidents. But to be arrested and yelled at and be rudely treated by police? For that I had to travel to Ferguson and St. Louis in the United States of America.”

According to a CNN article, “Federal officials are conducting two civil rights investigations, one into Brown’s killing and the other into the local police department’s overall track record with minorities.”

This shows a possible wrongdoing on both sides and a blame game with no end in sight. Regardless of specifically who is doing what, the next reaction should refrain from destructive action on the side of protesters, citizens and authorities.

Even though it would surely be difficult for some Ferguson protesters to not act on impulse if Wilson is not indicted, I encourage the citizens to not respond with aggressive action and the authorities to refrain from taking forceful response as much as possible. While it is easy to fall under the mob mentality, it is also impor-

tant for citizens to not join in on looting and destruction of their city.

An outstanding display took place after rioters looted the store that Brown allegedly robbed before his death. According to Kathleen Caulderwood, a group of protesters and observers gathered near the storefronts of the looted businesses in an attempt to prevent further looting.

It is equally important that police respond to the violence as peacefully as possible and use force only when necessary in order to keep the peace and prevent further violent reactions from protesters.

Ferguson has been a spectacle for violent outbreaks, unlawful action and racial issues. It is still not too late to positively impact society with these issues and I applaud those fellow citizens who stand up for equality and peacefully protest for something they believe in. It is a shame some few protesters can escalate the situation with destruction and violence to overtake the headlines and obscure the objective of the protest.

It is unfortunate that most of what has resulted from Brown’s shooting has been continued violence on both sides. Hopefully one day there will be peace among the residents of Ferguson and a valuable lesson will be taken from the actual shooting incident and the response of the police force and residents of Ferguson.

New York City safer today than in past

N

ew York City is reputable for hosting some of the most extraordinary individuals and professionals, ranging from the mass media sector to finance and entertainment. With its range of talent and expertise also follows its crime reputation that has long ranged between good and bad for this city. Strategic and tactful development has helped New York reach low crime rates, making the city that never sleeps a safer destination for society.

For many students, New York City is a destination where they dream to seek establishment and career development following graduation from college. In making the decision to allocate in a city rich of diversity, many have had to also develop street smarts in order to roam safely from point A to point B. Statistics show much of the paranoia and fear that New Yorkers carry has slowly diminished through time. This decrease in distress is largely in part due to a change in perceptions about what areas in our country are safe to live in today.

According to a Time magazine article, “According to a new study published today in the ‘Annuals of Emergency Medicine,’ large cities in the U.S. are significantly safer than rural areas. The risk of injury death — which counts both violent crime and accidents — is more than 20 percent higher in the countryside than it is

timidation experienced among women specifically has slowly eradicated as a result of safety implementation and stricter regulation in areas such as the subway system.

In fact, the success of such regulations is now being globally recognized. New York’s subway system is now categorized as one of the safest means of public transportation in current time for women.

According to a Crains New York article, “About half of New York women said they felt confident that someone would intervene on their behalf if they were in trouble.”

It is a sad rarity to roam in a city where a woman does not feel endangered or disrespected.

The fact that long established commonalities are changing opens the door to hope and possibility for our world today where women can envision themselves roaming the city without feeling anxious or threatened.

Questions may arise as to what precise strategy is resulting in a safer, more secure New York City.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, “The hot-spot idea helped to increase the effectiveness of the New York Police Department’s Compstat program, which uses computerized maps to pinpoint where crime is taking place and enables police chiefs to hold precinct captains responsible for targeting those areas.”

Such ingenious measure of stationing armed forces among crime-inflated areas is what makes this phenomenon of hot spot policing effective and successful.

I believe it is wise to ascertain that crime will always exist among any area around the world. In some areas, the presence of crime will be felt more than others. However, I do regard long established generalizations and stereotypes about urban areas to be unfair at times. If one took the time to be engaged in what is currently occurring around the world, one would be freed from the reigns of passivity and ignorance.

It is exciting to thrive and grow in a time period where current developments are rapidly evolving and resulting in new breakthroughs. The decrease in crime rates and the rise of safety in New York City would not be possible without the strenuous effort and sacrifice of all who devote their time to make this world a better place.

Exposure to films and television has instilled false analogies about the Big Apple in American mindsets.

According to a New York Daily News article, “Total crime, which focuses on the so-called seven majors — murder, rape, robbery, felony, assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto — is down 7.9 percent for the last three months as compared to the same period last year, data reveals.”

Realistically speaking, New York City is not the actual dangerous, crime-filled sensation as portrayed in current Hollywood films today.

Among those that travel and settle in large cities is the female sector. Being a female at times consequently results in women feeling more prone to sexual harassment or in more severe cases, sexual assault. It is a tragic reality that sexual assault and harassment are violations that are made amidst both genders today.

For years, the public transportation system has been a witness to murder, violence and sexual harassment. Fear and in-

Students discuss Thanksgiving traditions Staff Writer

Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather together, discuss what they are thankful for and eat as much food as they possibly can.

Though some traditions may be similar, different Texas Tech students and family’s traditions vary from person to person.

Laura Stanton, a freshman restaurant, hotel and institutional management major from The Woodlands, said her family travels to visit her grandparents in Dallas every year for the holiday.

“My grandparents’ house has always been the central gathering place for all of my family,” Stanton said. “We go there every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas or any major holiday, really.”

This year will be different for Stanton’s family, she said, because her grandmother died earlier this year.

She is not yet sure how this year will go, Stanton said, but she is hoping things do not feel too abnormal.

“We thought about not traveling this year,” she said, “but we really need to be there for my grandfather since this will be his first Thanksgiving without her in like, 50 years — he really needs us there to celebrate with him.”

Stanton’s family assigns different people to cook different dishes every year, Stanton said, mostly having the same people make the same annual dish.

It is Stanton’s job every Thanksgiving, she said, to make the sweet potato casserole.

“They actually wouldn’t allow me to make it for a year or two because I had gotten into the habit of overflowing the dish with marshmallows,” Stanton said. “They eventually just let me do my thing cause honestly it didn’t taste as good when my aunt made it.”

Nonetheless, Stanton said she has never had a Thanksgiving holiday with her family she has not enjoyed.

James Buccan, a junior finance major from Fredericksburg, said his family’s favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.

“We go all out,” Buccan said.

“We eat more food on that day than we do all year, probably.”

One unusual tradition Buccan’s family has, he said, is going to the movies the day before Thanksgiving.

His family has followed this

tradition since he was five years old, Buccan said, and he is not sure why the tradition started.

While some students have families who are huge advocates of Thanksgiving, other students have never celebrated.

Yussef Benelbar, a junior business administration major from Dallas, has parents from Algeria and said his family does not celebrate regularly. “ M a y b e i t ’s b e c a u s e m y parents grew up overseas, but Thanksgiving has never been a huge deal to them,” Benelbar said. “We have maybe a turkey or a larger dinner, but we don’t do anything huge because it is not a significant holiday to them.”

Benelbar grew up in the U.S., he said, even thought his parents did not.

When he was in elementary school, Benelbar said, he did not

know what the holiday was when it was talked about in school.

“I was actually invited to my friend’s family Thanksgiving dinner one year when I was a little older,” he said. “I had no idea what to do, so I just kind of sat there. They said they wanted to say grace and I thought it was someone’s name.”

Benelbar did not feel uneasy learning about it in school, he said, and has since celebrated several times with a friend’s family.

Benelbar likes celebrating Thanksgiving, he said, even though it is not a usual holiday to celebrate for his family.

“I always hope my friend invites me to have Thanksgiving with his family,” Benelbar said.“Because to my family, it’s just another day.” ➤➤lsolis@dailytoreador.com

Students, expert advise caution with alcohol during break

About four in five college students consume alcohol, and half of them report binge drinking, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

According to NIAAA statistics, 1,825 college students die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries.

Zackery Neu, a sophomore business management major from East Bernard, said since he has been here at Tech he has been regularly partaking in weekend drinking with friends

and he feels that he knows his limit when it comes to drinking.

“12 beers, I don’t know, 12 beers and anything past one shot,” he said.

According to College Drinking Prevention, a government-sponsored website that compiles college drinking statistics, 31 percent of college students meet the criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse and 6 percent for a diagnosis of alcohol dependence in the past 12 months.

Steve Rodgers, a sophomore theater major from Brownwood, said he plans to travel back to Brownwood for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and he will probably have a few

drinks when he is there.

“I plan to have a beer or two,” he said. “Maybe a beer or some liquor, not that much.”

Blake Palmer, a freshman business finance major from Waco, said he knows what his drinking limit is and that he plans to have a few drinks when visiting his family for the holiday.

“I think I’m about 12 beers, but shot-wise I think I’m a little bit more tolerant on the liquor, I think I can do about six or seven,” he said.

Juan Trejo, with Texas Tech Crime Prevention, said people should know their limits and think

about their lives and goals before deciding to drink excessively.

“My thing would be, you know, don’t get started, because once you get started it involves more than what you think, a lot of people may get affected by it,” he said. “So you really don’t think about it, we never think about the consequences, you know, we always think about having a good time with friends.”

According to a University of West Virginia study, an alcoholrelated crash kills one person every 31 minutes and injures one person every two minutes.

shows that alcohol-related automobile accidents are the secondleading cause of death among U.S. college students.

“If you have started drinking, be smart about it,” Trejo said. “Know your limits.”

Doug Shupe, AAA Texas and New Mexico public relations specialist, said it is important to remember not to drink and drive.

“You never want to drink and drive, but this is the time of year when people do celebrate with alcohol,” he said. “If you are of age and you plan to celebrate with alcohol we urge you to make a plan not to

drive. It’s that simple.”

Shupe said to plan ahead of time if you are going to be drinking, “Call for a cab service,” he said.

“Plan to stay overnight wherever you are celebrating or plan to have a non-drinking driver for the whole evening and make sure that you make that plan before you ever have that first alcoholic beverage.”

Neu said although he may have too much to drink on the weekends he never drives when drinking.

Holiday travel preparations include car maintenance, gathering flight documents

As winter weather hits the state and people begin to head home for the holidays, students are beginning to get their cars, bags and end-of-the-year projects ready to travel.

To help students get their cars ready to make the journey home, Stacy Moncibaiz, marketing coordinator for Tech Transportation and Parking Service, said Parking Services hosted a clinic for students Nov. 5 to help them to begin to get their cars ready.

More students attended the Free Car Clinic this fall than in previous years, Moncibaiz said, with 232 attendees.

“Our top priority is safety,” Moncibaiz said. “We want all of our students, faculty and staff members to be safe in their vehicles, especially as they’re traveling across the state and even country for these breaks.”

Every year the university hosts the Free Car Clinic, they partner with Scott’s Car Care, according to the Parking Services website.

The mechanics do not repair anything on site, but instead they inspect the cars for things such as the condition of the belts, tires and the fluid levels.

They want to make people aware of possible problems and point out things people do not normally notice when looking over their car, Scott Ekert, owner of Scott’s Car Care, said.

“We look at the cars like we’re going to drive them to San Antonio,” Ekert said. “We don’t want to break down, so we don’t want them to break down.”

When getting ready to leave, Ekert said, most people neglect the fact that their vehicle is the main thing they will use on their trip home.

It is impossible to get every car that needs work done into the shop in just a few days, Ekert said, so it is important that people do not wait until the last minute.

Moncibaiz never utilized the car clinic while she was a student, she said, but she wishes she would have.

“It’s really easy. You just drive through,” Moncibaiz said.

“You don’t even have to get out of your car, you can just drive through the whole thing. It goes through quickly.”

Keeping a full tank of gas is essential, Ekert said, in case car problems occur, a driver can run the heater and operate the windows.

The emergency number on the back of a driver’s license brings protection and assistance from a State Trooper in the area, Ekert said.

“The Department of Public Safety works for us,” Ekert said.

“There’s a phone number that if you do get stranded, call that number first.”

Living in West Texas, Moncibaiz said it is normal to hit bad weather, so drivers need to be cautious.

Checking your tires and oil is the easiest thing to do when preparing for a trip, Moncibaiz said, and it could save you a lot of trouble when on the road. “(Driving in winter conditions) is always scary,” Moncibaiz said, “because you feel pretty helpless if you hit a bad spot.”

Spark plugs, battery life and thickening fluid are major concerns in the cold, according to the Accuweather website.

In Texas, storms usually pass in a day or two at the most, Ekert said. Delaying a trip is safer than putting lives in danger.

“Nothing is that important to drive in weather you shouldn’t be driving in,” Ekert said. “If you’re going home and it’s too bad you need to stop and wait until the next day. It’s not worth the risk.”

If students are flying home instead they also need to make specific preparations, according to the Transportation Security Administration website.

Flyers should make sure they have printed out their tickets and checked the rules and regulations for flying for the respective airline, according to the website.

A flyer should also check his or her carry-on ahead of time to make sure there are no liquids and they have an identification card, according to the administration website.

Tech organization combats sexual assault

It’s On Us campaign encourages FMLA hosts Take Back the Night national bystander involvement

O n S ept . 1, The Whi te House announced the “It’s On Us” campaign, which specifically combats sexual assault on college campuses, Tricia Earl, unit coordinator and academic adviser for the Texas Tech Women’s Studies Program, said.

Since the campaign was announced, organizations, students and staff members have made video pledges to combat sexual assault, Earl said.

“It’s On Us is the third campaign the White House has released to combat sexual assault and violence against women and girls,” Earl said. “It’s something departments and organizations can showcase to step up, step in and say something when they see any type of culture or actions that perpetrate sexual assault.”

Once the It’s On Us campaign was announced, the Women’s Studies program took the lead, Earl said.

Members of the program started sending out social media invitations, she said, to encourage the Tech community to take the It’s On Us pledge.

Earl thought these groups would need an example so the Women’s Studies started their video, she said.

“I got (the video) out and I

noticed others stepping up and asking questions,” Earl said.

“This doesn’t have an end date — it needs to continue. I think student organizations should use this as initiation. It’s a good way to start conversation about what a bystander can do.”

Sophia Dominguez, president of the Tech Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, said after the campaign was announced, FMLA heated up the action to involve the community.

Tech FMLA works to encompass the diversity of the community to show how taking responsibility is a job for everyone, she said.

Since FMLA is working to incorporate as many Lubbock community members as possible, the organization’s It’s On Us video is still in progress, Dominguez said.

They hope to have the video completed by Christmas, she said.

“I believe that in light of recent events in the beginning of this semester many people looked to Tech FMLA to take the lead,” Dominguez said. “It’s important for us as a feminist organization to pay close attention and be leaders to involve everyone in this campaign.”

Since this campaign is unique to campuses, it allows those in campus leadership roles to step up, Earl said, and

it is unique because it involves bystander participation.

The words are short and simple but the way they are delivered and directed show people are standing up for the cause, Earl said.

If more people become active and stand in front of a camera down the road this gives people the power to step in and ask someone being assaulted if they are OK, Earl said.

“I think that’s the point, that something so short and simple can have a huge impact to the individual that needed to hear it,” Earl said. “It won’t change overnight but the more energy we put into to it, we will see change.”

The It’s On Us campaign is about involving bystanders and calling on everyone in the community, Dominguez said.

The campaign brings focus on how bystanders react to sexual assault, she said.

“Even if they haven’t been personally touched by a survivor of sexual assault, it’s important to realize we are responsible for what happens in our community,” she said.

“It’s up to us to change how we think, act and feel about sexual assault and It’s On Us is how we get people involved and take ownership.” ➤➤kbarton@dailytoreador.com

A chant of “no means no, yes means yes” filled campus as a group of students, faculty, staff and community members took back the night with the Texas Tech Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.

The organization hosted the event Take Back the Night at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and the evening began with guest speakers at Memorial Circle.

After the speakers, the group participated in a march and rally.

The evening concluded with a candlelight vigil where the community stood in solidarity and opened the floor for any survivors to speak. “(Women are) often taught to

walk in pairs, to be wary when we’re walking in dark parking lots, to always have our keys or our mace out,” Sophia Dominguez, Tech FMLA president, said. “This is taking ownership of the night and of ourselves.”

Take Back the Night is an event to raise awareness for and combat sexual assault, Dominguez said, and it gives survivors and women ownership of the night.

Tech FMLA wants Lubbock and Tech campus to be a safe community, she said, and the organization works toward creating a safer community.

“I really want people to realize

how many people we have on campus that are in support and awareness of the people affected by sexual assault and sexual violence,” Dominguez said. “That’s what I want people to take away from tonight.”

April Ortegon, a dual psychology and sociology major, said she was sexually assaulted as a freshman.

Take Back the Night was her first event to combat sexual assault, she said.

“Tonight is the time that I’m not afraid to be doing something like this,” Ortegon said. “I spent the last three and a half years being afraid of doing this.” ➤➤kbarton@dailytoreador.com

New associate vice president to promote research, faculty development

Patricia DeLucia was recently appointed associate vice president for research for faculty affairs in the Texas Tech Office of the Vice President for Research.

DeLucia was previously a full-time professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, according to the department website, and also worked as a faculty fellow in the Office of the Vice President for Research before being contacted about taking the position a few weeks ago.

“I am delighted that professor Pat DeLucia has accepted this important position,” Vice President of Research Robert V. Duncan said. “She is dedicated to being of service to our outstanding faculty as they achieve their research goals, as we all are in the research office.”

One of DeLucia’s main goals in her new role is to help faculty receive recognition, nominations for various research awards and improve and promote their research, DeLucia said.

Along with faculty development, DeLucia said she will help in Tech’s push to be recognized as a tier-one university.

The next step in that push is to move past the state level and meet other organization’s benchmarks, she said. It is not something that will happen overnight, but it is definitely attainable in the near future, she said.

“What interested me is being able to work with the faculty and Rob Duncan’s administrative team,” she said, “to help enhance Texas Tech’s research mission and its goals to become a tier-one research university.”

DeLucia is passionate about research, she said, and loves the entire research enterprise.

She is also organized, detail-oriented and systematic, she said.

“I’m very methodical,” DeLucia said, “which is what a good researcher is. I think I’m good at getting things done in an efficient way.”

Despite the demands of her new role, DeLucia is continuing to teach in the Department of Psychological Sciences as well as work on her own research.

Her schedule is busy but nothing she can’t handle, she said.

“It’s just trying to balance everything,” DeLucia said, “but it makes it exciting, too. I like to be busy.”

“There’s just a whole bunch of things that you learn when you’re involved in research,” she said. “In general, I would say that research, ultimately, you would want it to benefit society.”

DeLucia has also been an integral

part of the Tech Faculty Research Club, which she said meets once a month.

The club is a place where members can participate in discussions and learning about research outside of classes in a more informal, social setting, according to the club’s website, and is open to all Tech and Tech Health Sciences Center faculty.

Faculty members often speak about research and various research resources on campus, according to the website, and freely discuss their ideas.

When DeLucia joined the office as a fellow about a year ago, Duncan said, he asked her to find a way to distinguish faculty that are top research performers.

She was in charge of getting nominations and finding national honors and recognitions, Duncan said, and she did well.

Her efforts have brought great recognition to these members and to Tech.

The Texas Tech administrative assistant of the athletics department may not always be in the spotlight, but her impact on the program is known by everyone around the program.

After close to 30 years of service with Tech, Sheila Tucker has decided to retire next month.

Associate Athletic Director Blayne Beal has worked with Tucker every day in his time at Tech and said it is impossible to list everything Tucker does for him because the list is infinite.

“It’s hard to put it into words.

When you work with someone who’s been in the same job for 29 years, and certainly never was in it for the money — her love of this school, our student athletes, coaches, all of us, that’s special. You don’t see that every day,” he said. “Her impact and calm reassurance for 30 years says it all. Our former players also make a stop to come see her.”

In 1986, Tucker was working as a secretary for the city of Idalou when her brother-in-law, who was working for Tech, got her an interview with Joe Hornaday, the athletic director at the time.

Hornaday felt she was a great fit for the athletic department, but Tucker said he did her a favor by giving her a job in a maledominated industry.

“It’s hard when you come from a small town like Idalou. I came from a world of no computers. We barely had a computer back then in 1986.

In 1995, No. 8 Texas A&M traveled to Lubbock on a 29-game conference winning streak, according to a Tech Athletics press release. With 30 seconds left in the game, Tech linebacker Zach Thomas pulled in an interception and returned it for a touchdown to defeat the Aggies 14-7.

Tucker said that she will remember that game for the rest of her life, not only because she was proud of Thomas, but because she accidently got excited and screamed in the press box once the ball was intercepted.

The other game is one she remembers because it was so emotional for her. It was Dykes final game, when a young Kingsbury defeated Oklahoma.

“We just lit Oklahoma up,” she said. “When we went into halftime, I remember seeing Kliff, and we are down at halftime, and he patted Spike (Dykes) on the butt and said ‘We got them right where we want them, coach.’”

Ultimately, Tucker said she decided to retire because this summer her husband found out he has a brain tumor and because she feels it is time for the department to move on without her.

After she retires, she and her husband plan on traveling across the country on their motorcycle, but coming back into Lubbock to see the Red Raiders play football and baseball.

Even though Tucker did not go to college, she has built up a love for Tech and said she would never even consider working at a rival school such as Texas.

On Oct. 3, Baylor and Tech will once again meet in Arlington at AT&T Stadium. The two teams have been playing at the neutral site since 2009, according to the release.

The Red Raiders will play Iowa State and Oklahoma State at home in October, with Kansas and Oklahoma on the road in between the home games.

November will start off with a road trip to Morgantown to face the Mountaineers before the Red Raiders return to Lubbock to take on Kansas State on Nov. 14 for the final home game of the season.

Tickets for the 2015 season will be announced in the coming weeks, according to the release.

On Wednesday afternoon, Texas Tech and the Big 12 Conference announced the Red Raiders football schedule for the 2015 season.

The season will kick off on Sept.

5 at Jones AT&T Stadium against Sam Houston State.

The Red Raiders will play 11 straight games without a bye week before taking on rival Texas in the final game of the season.

The game against the Longhorns will be in Austin on Nov. 26, Thanksgiving night.

After opening with Sam Houston State, UTEP will travel to Lubbock on Sept. 12 for the annual Celebrate Cotton game, according to a Tech Athletics website.

Tech will round out its nonconference schedule with a road game against Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Players stay in Lubbock during break Tech looks to push past second round

On Tuesday, and for some even earlier, the majority of Texas Tech students will leave Lubbock to go home and spend time with their families for Thanksgiving break.

The Red Raider football players, however, will stay in the Panhandle and spend the week practicing and

preparing for the Nov. 29 matchup with the Baylor Bears.

Senior defensive end Branden Jackson said the Red Raiders will stay through the week and continue to do everything they can to prepare for No. 6-ranked Baylor.

“This is time to work,” Jackson said, “and you don’t take any breaks when you’re working.”

Washington said although the players have to stay in Lubbock through the week of Thanksgiving, they will be released after the Baylor game and some players will visit their families.

Washington, a Houston native, said the drive home is too far for him to make during that weekend and he has never been able to go home through his time at Tech, but he will be going home after finals for winter break.

“My family’s real supportive, so they come up here (to Lubbock) a lot during the season so I see them over the course of the season,” Washington said. “After Thanksgiving, we go home about two weeks afterward.

I mean, they can wait two weeks.”

Jackson said sometimes the Red Raider players will get together during the break to just hang out and eat.

“Sometimes we’ll meet up at a senior’s house or sometimes we might just go together and have a team meal together,” he said. “Everyone will just pitch in and we’ll eat together to create that tightknit type group.”

Last year, the Red Raiders played on Thanksgiving Day against Texas in Austin. Tech will do the same

thing next year, taking on the Longhorns on Nov. 26.

Washington said it’s always special playing on or around Thanksgiving because of the major role football plays on that day.

“You look around, not even just college football, but in the NFL, there’s nothing to do Thanksgiving except eat and watch football,” he said. “It’s fun, it’s always been a great experience and I’m looking forward to playing in Jerry’s World on Thanksgiving this year.”

Tech and Baylor have been facing off against Baylor in Arlington at AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, since 2009, according to a news release from Tech Athletics.

Jackson said it is special getting to play on the Cowboys’ field, especially because of his goal of one day playing in the NFL. “It’s always some extra motivation to get to play on the field you one day want to get paid to do,” he said. “It’s a blessing and I’m very thankful that the (athletic director) and football program have been able to have this going ever since I’ve been here.” ➤➤sports@dailytoreador.com

No. 3-seed Texas Tech (15-3-2) faces Auburn (12-6-3) in the second round of the women’s NCAA Division I soccer tournament 2 p.m.

Friday in Gainesville, Florida.

This match signals the thirdstraight time Tech has made it to the second round, according to Tech Athletics.

However, the second round is as far as the team has been able to go in the tournament.

In 2012, Tech lost 3-2 to No. 1-seed Florida State in double overtime. And then in 2013, No. 1-seed Texas A&M defeated Tech in penalty kicks after remaining tied 2-2 through regulation and double overtime.

Senior defender Jaelene Hinkle said Florida State and Texas A&M were tough second-round matchups, but those losses have prepared Tech for a push past the second round.

“It is pure preparation when we get there,” Hinkle said. “Just get to the hotel, rest, have a walkthrough before we play, and then it is game time.”

With this focus, Hinkle said there is a feeling throughout the team that it will finally come out victorious in the second round. Tech knows nothing is guaranteed, so every player will be attacking from the beginning of the game to the end.

Coach Tom Stone said despite the experience gathered in the last tournament appearance, Tech is still the upstart team in its bracket, even against Auburn.

Auburn is a top Southeastern Conference team seasoned with veteran experience, Stone said.

“Traditionally, they have always been able to throw a lot of quality, attacking players at you,” he said, “and I think this squad is no different. We’ve seen five really good forwards on their team if not more

they can rotate through, and put pressure on you.”

This team has scored thirty-five goals, according to Auburn Athletics. Those goals were scored with 45.7 percent of its 291 shots on goal, and eight players scoring three or more goals this season.

Auburn coach Karen Hoppa is going to use this strength all she can with three athletic forwards on the field at all times to test Tech’s backline, Stone said.

Auburn, however, has not been able to score as many goals as Tech.

Through 20 games, Tech has scored 44 goals with 41. 5 percent of its 359 shots on goal.

Also, opposing teams have scored 20 goals for opposing teams against Auburn.

Junior midfielder Hannah Devine said the key to Tech’s success is its ability to focus on itself.

“The way we play is so hard to play against it really doesn’t matter what the team plays,” Devine said.

It is comforting to sharpen the team’s skills because by this time we know ourselves better than perhaps any other team across the nation knows itself, she said. Tech is a team using precision passing to possess the ball with a lot of scrappiness.

This familiarity provides Tech with the knowledge on how to defeat any type of opponent with its skills, Devine said.

No matter how Tech knows itself, Hinkle said she just wants to make it to past the second round and take the team as far it can go.

There is no looking ahead to the third round, she said. To face Florida or California in the next round would be fine with Tech.

“It really doesn’t matter to us who we play,” Hinkle said, “as long as we are still playing. The goal is just to stay alive and keep playing and not get eliminated. So either way we just want to keep playing.” ➤➤dhaile@dailytoreador.com

With 80 seconds left, Nowitzki sank a 3 to put the Mavs ahead 102-97, and then held out three fingers on one hand and slammed it against his other palm.

Washington lost at home for the first time this season, despite Bradley Beal’s first action following left wrist surgery.

Beal was terrific, too, leading Washington with 21 points, and even drawing a charge on Ellis with about 30 seconds to go. But with a chance to tie the game, John Wall missed a 3-pointer at the other end.

Ellis then made two free throws to push Dallas’ edge to five points.

Over the first two quarters, Ellis made 7 of 10 shots, including a 3-pointer, and 9 of 10 free throws.

J.J. Barea and Brandan Wright each had 14 points for Dallas, which

leads the NBA in scoring and has won five consecutive games.

Wall missed his first eight shots and finished 5 for 17 for 11 points, with 11 assists.

Beal had wrist surgery last month.

He began practicing this week and was on the active roster for the first time after missing Washington’s first nine games.

Wearing a black wrap on his non-shooting wrist and part of that hand, he entered with about five minutes left in the first quarter and was greeted by a standing ovation as the PA announcer said: “D.C., welcome to the floor, No. 3, Bradley Beal.”

Beal played the remainder of that quarter, and then stayed on the floor at the start of the second, which he opened by sinking a left-handed layup. Later in the second, he made a 3-pointer to give Washington a 35-29 lead, prompting several teammates to rise off their courtside seats and raise three fingers overhead.

When Beal’s 3 moved Washington ahead 85-84 with about eight minutes remaining, he screamed.

As that shot went in, Nowitzki pulled up and then dropped down.

After getting back in the game, he only made one shot — to finish with 13 points — but it was a big one.
