Theme adds life to Carol of Lights

ith the flip of a switch, more than 25,000 colored lights illuminate 18 buildings around Memorial Circle, the Engineering Key and the Broadway entrance to Texas Tech’s campus.

The event marks the start of the holiday season at Texas Tech.

Carol of Lights, one of Tech’s largest and oldest traditions, will take place on Friday, Dec. 1, with the carillon beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the ceremony at 7 p.m.

The setup of the lights, wreath and tree begin as early as September to make sure everything is ready by the day of the event. Many campus partners help with the setup, including the Residence Halls Association and the Grounds Maintenance department.

Each year, a theme is selected for the annual event to help bring it to life. This year’s theme is “Miracle on Memorial Circle.”

Alyson Cole, the Residence Halls Association advisor, said the theme of Carol of Lights gets chosen by a committee comprised of on-campus students, RHA executive officers and Residence Life staff members.

“Students brainstorm different themes and vote on an overall theme that will capture the spirit of the traditional event,” she said.

The Carol of Lights Student Art Competition piece is also considered when voting on a theme.

This year, the committee said they loved the artwork done by Flita Veleny Fernandes and embraced the piece as the image for this year’s event.

Students discuss pros, cons of drinking coffee

By CHELSEA GILMORE Staff Writer

As finals week approaches students may find themselves handling a sea of papers, tests and final projects.

Coffee may sometimes be the answer to the late nights and tired eyes. Research from the American Heart Association suggests it also has positive health benefits such as lower risk of heart failure, stroke and coronary heart disease.

For coffee enthusiasts, research shows there are not many negative effects unless consumers overdo

their caffeine intake.

Samantha McCloskey, a sophomore criminology major from Philadelphia, said she drinks at least three cups of coffee per day. However, during stressful weeks she will drink more than that.

“College is stressful and we need to stay awake to finish school work or keep a job,” she said. “The taste is an appeal for me, but I know a lot of people only drink it for the caffeine.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a standard eightounce cup of coffee has between 95-165 milligrams of caffeine. For non-coffee

consumers, coffee can make them feel jittery or give them trouble sleeping, according to Time Magazine.

Jordan Collinsworth, a senior biology major from Garland, said he has never been a huge fan of coffee and said he can be pretty sensitive to caffeine.

“I think my first year in college I tried to diet and met a kid down the hall from me that helped me cut out caffeine,” he said.

“Ever since then I haven’t really drunk soda or caffeine as much.”

Students may start out drinking coffee while in college to help keep

them alert and focused, but according to a survey conducted by Pressat. 85 percent of professionals said they drink at least three cups of coffee a day, and almost 70 percent said their job performance would be affected if they worked without having any coffee at all.

According to Live Science, because of the antioxidants coffee contain inhaling coffee aromas can reduce the effects of sleep deprivation. With the various studies done to test the effects of coffee, it can be said that some people also just enjoy drinking it.

Students discuss bar scene, going out on weekends

By MATTHEW SETZEKORN Staff Writer

A stereotype for college students is that they are always out at the hottest bars, clubs and house parties and that weekends are spent drinking and partying the night away.

Tera Stines, a senior speech language and hearing sciences from Victoria, said that she would go out because of these preconceived notions about college and partying.

“I used to go out mostly

to get what I thought was ‘the college experience,’” Stines said. “I was very shy in high school, so in college I was determined to make friends and have more fun.”

Madison Wilson, a senior public relations major from Coppell, said she fit into that stereotype during her first couple of years of college, but the scene just was not for her anymore.

“I’m not much of a partier or drinker anymore,” Wilson said. “I was when I was a freshman and sophomore,

but I’m now more focused on my studies. I maybe go out twice a month. I’m more into hanging out with close friends at home while drinking some wine.

One reason many college students like to have a few drinks and go out is because of the stress that comes with being a student. Wilson said she does not go out to relieve her stress because going out would just make her more stressed out.

“It does not help with my stress because I usually don’t get anything done the

next day,” she said. “I enjoy going out when I know I don’t have any assignments due or any responsibilities that weekend.”

Stress may be someone’s excuse for going out, but it is not everyone’s.

Nathan Nichols, a senior mathematics major from San Antonio, said his main reason for going out is to have fun with friends.

“I mostly go out to hang out with a bunch of my friends,” Nichols said. “It’s just a nice way to go out and have a good time with friends.”

Similarly, Wilson said being with friends is also her favorite part about going out. In addition, she meets a lot of friendly new people that make her time out worthwhile.

“My favorite thing about going out is getting to spend time with my friends and make new ones. I feel like people are nicer and more welcoming in the bar scene,” Wilson said. “It’s easy to make friends and enjoy peoples company. Every time I go out I end up making new friends and always

end up enjoying my night.”

Although a lot of incoming freshman believe that their weekends throughout college are going to be preoccupied in the club or bar, Stines said that you shouldn’t feel pressured to go out.

“Some people love to go out and be in those crowds, others prefer a night in with a few close friends,” Stines said. “If you want to go out do it. But I don’t think anyone should ever feel like they have to go out to fit in.” @DailyToreador

Tech provides carless students rides home for holidays

Many freshman stud e n ts c o me t o ca m p u s without a vehicle, which makes getting home for the holidays a struggle.

However, Texas Tech provides options to ensure people make it home.

Christine Self, the associate director of Parent and Family Relations and said the department is there to help students find a way home.

“Parent and Family Relations partners with a company called Break Shuttle to provide bus trips home for Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break,” Self said.

said the busses traveled to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso to bring students to their hometowns.

“Students can go online and purchase those tickets and not have to drive home by themselves or buy an expensive airline ticket during the holidays,” she said.

Many of the students who take advantage of this opportunity are firstyear students who do not have their car on campus, but Self said even seniors use the shuttle.

“It’s been very popular,” Self said. “Our numbers have been very steady, around 1,000 students use it during the Thanksgiving trips, and lesser

numbers for Winter Break and Spring Break.”

The biggest benefit of this program is the low cost of transportation, she said. It is also a chartered bus with fellow Tech students and fewer stops than a Greyhound bus.

These trips provide a safe and cheaper alternative for students and their families, Self said.

The prices for each student vary depending on the distance of the trip.

For example, the Houston trips are a little more expensive than the ones to Dallas, she said.

“They do early bird pricing, so the earlier you buy the ticket, the cheaper it is,” Self said.

Nicholas Taylor, a junior accounting major from

Southlake, said he does not have his own car on campus, but his brother has a vehicle here.

Typically, Taylor carpools home with his brother for the holidays, but he said sometimes they do not have the same schedule.

“I had to leave early because he was leaving Sunday,” he said, “and I had to leave with him or else I’d have to find a ride.”

Taylor said this is an inconvenience because he had to miss a quiz in order to get the ride home with his brother. Though he has heard of the shuttle system but has never taken advantage of it. Instead, he said he would most likely find a ride with a friend.

“I know there is one that

goes to Houston but I didn’t know one went to Dallas,” he said.

Michaela Knapp, a sophomore psychology and supply chain management major from Arlington, was also carless her freshman year, she said.

Knapp said she would travel back home with a friend from high school, otherwise she would not have a ride home.

Although the downfall of not having a car on campus around the holidays is feeling like a burden, she said the benefits are that she did not have to pay for gas or insurance for her car.

Conyers has no plan to resign amid harassment claims DETROIT (AP) — Embattled U.S. Rep. John Conyers has no plans to resign amid allegations

that the congressman sexually harassed several women when they worked on his staff, his lawyer

said Wednesday.

Detroit-area attorney Arnold Reed told The Associated Press that the 88-year-old Conyers is going to fight claims that he inappropriately touched the women and that anyone making the allegations should be prepared to back them up.

Reed said Conyers is “innocent and will cooperate with any investigation that ensues.”

“He’s going to fight these allegations tooth and nail if he has to with evidence, with documentation, witnesses, whatever he has to do,” Reed said. “And the accusers will have to prove up their case.”

Last week, BuzzFeed News reported that Conyers had settled a complaint in 2015 from a woman on his staff who alleged she was fired because she rejected his sexual advances.

BuzzFeed reported that Conyers’ office paid the woman more than $27,000 in the confidential settlement. BuzzFeed also published affidavits from former staff members who said they had

witnessed Conyers touching female staffers inappropriately or requesting sexual favors.

A former scheduler filed a complaint earlier this year, but later dropped it.

The Associated Press hasn’t released her name. And a third ex-staffer, Deanna Maher, said Tuesday that in 1997 Conyers undressed to his underwear in front of her and twice touched her leg inappropriately.

Reed said he met with Conyers, who was at his Detroit home Wednesday and mostly remained indoors before being driven away in the afternoon as reporters gathered outside the gated driveway.

Monica Conyers told reporters that her husband is entitled to have the judicial process play out “before we start being his judge and jury ... and tarnish all of these years of his legacy for nothing.”

Conyers first was elected to the U.S. House in 1964. He missed two rollcall votes late Tuesday and was photographed by a passenger boarding a flight to Detroit from Washington.

Internships help career success after graduation

By CHELSEA GILMORE Staff Writer

Internships are an important part of gaining the experience college students need to apply for full-time positions.

While not all majors require internships, some at Texas Tech do. For those looking to obtain an internship, there are oncampus resources available to students.

Jay Killough, the managing director of the University Career Center, said he believes internships are important and every major should be

required to have one.

“No matter what test you take, no matter what paper you KILLOUGH write, no matter what grades you make, an internship trumps it all,” he said.

Students should identify areas of work that interest them the most and then start applying six-tonine-months prior to when the internship is needed, Killough said.

Jordan Ryan, lead academic advisor for University Advising, said according

to research he has seen, the title of a major is not as important as work experience.

“We see a lot of anxiety from students about picking the right major to guarantee employment after college,” Ryan said.

“The reality is there are a lot more factors that go into employment after college rather than just the physical title of the major you hang up on your wall.”

Internships are a great tool that give students an idea of what to look for when applying for full-time jobs, Killough said. Internships can also be a chance for students to realize what

areas they do not want to work in. “ T h e great thing about internships, BALKE mine pers o n a l l y, kind of told me what I didn’t want to do,” Killough said. “I’m glad I found that out in my internship and not once I started working full-time.”

Emily Balke, recruitment and retention specialist for the Center for Student Success, Outreach & Engagement, said the process of applying for an

internship is a lot like applying for a job.

“We don’t place you in an internship,” she said.

“The reason why we don’t place students in internships is because I won’t be able to place you in a job after you graduate.”

This gives students the opportunity to network and go through the interviewing process for themselves, Balke said.

It is never too early for students to start looking for an internship, Balke said, and they should be aware of the pre-requisites in order for the internship to count for course credit.

According to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, around 70 to 80 percent of internships become fulltime job offers. With this high of a statistic, interns should not always rely on the offer itself, but more so on their work experience and qualifications.

“You don’t have to just one internship,” Killough said. “I think it’s important to know that more than one internship is great on a résumé. I think in this day and age you have to have at least two or three to be competitive.” @DailyToreador

Programs, community work to help homeless

By MOLLY MCLENDON Staff Writer

There are many different attitudes towards the homeless community here in Lubbock.

Nicklas Miller, a senior management information systems major from San Antonio, said he has had mixed experiences with the homeless population in Lubbock.

“There are some people that are having a tough time and they want to get some help,” Miller said, “and sometimes people are aggressive and rude.”

Overall, Miller typically has positive interactions with homeless individuals. He said most of his encounters occur around grocery stores or near the front of campus.

“I definitely see more people helping them than people that don’t when I’m

around homeless people,” Miller said.

Though he said he does like to help the needy whenever he can.

“I think it’s lack of understanding how they get there and if we have a better idea of various scenarios could come up that might lead someone to a life of homelessness, we might be more understanding and willing to approach and help them,” Miller said.

Doug Morris, the executive director at Family promise of Lubbock, a temporary shelter for homeless people in Lubbock, said the organization provides shelter and food for families and also assists them in finding a job.

Morris said they work very hard to not simply be a shelter, they want to help these individuals move on and be successful.

“They’re allowed to stay

as long as they are working towards getting out of homelessness, towards independence,” Morris said.

For some people it takes longer to find a job, especially if they have multiple kids. Because these families need to save their money it usually takes a while until they are able to afford to move into their own place.

“We don’t put a limit but we set some goals and hope they can get on their feet in 90 days,” Morris said.

Many of attitudes towards homeless people are improving, he said and sometimes agencies do too much for them.

“It comes to the point where they’re enabling them,” Morris said.

Though Miller said he understands how chal lenging it can be to help the homeless financially for students. Though most

college students may not be able to afford helping out many homeless people, volunteering at a shelter or donating to a food drive is always an alternative.

I definitely see more people helping them than people that don’t when I’m around homeless people.

Miller also said most students could help in small ways. One small way to help is just to be more accepting of homeless.

“Because Lubbock is such a giving, generous community, they want to

come here but they’re not getting out of homelessness,” he said.

The goal, as an agency, Morris said is to break the cycle, especially for families.

“We really encourage the people who come into our program to take charge of their lives, get back on their feet,” Morris said.

“We provide them some help, but they have to do it themselves and when they do it restores their dignity.”

Helen Morrow, is an associate Professor of Social Work who works at a free clinic that provides social services to community members.

“50 to 20 percent of (people) are homeless,” Morrow said.

The majority of her encounters with these homeless patients are very positive, she said.

“The homeless people, especially in Lubbock, tend to be exceptionally grateful for anything that we can

do for them,” Morrow said.

Morrow said she thinks the community is specifically more generous this time of year because of the You Can Share food drive.

“When the weather turns cold, people being to realize that individuals and families might be left out in the cold,” she said.

Fortunately, there are year-round services, she said. Open Door, Lubbock Impact, Salvation Army and lots of food pantries help meet the needs of homeless people.

Miller said that if attitudes change and students stop having a stigma about the homeless community, there could be more mutual respect.

“While they do need to get help, if they can afford it, us ignoring them is not going to make the problem any better,” Miller said. @DailyToreador

Students discuss Trump’s controversial use of Twitter

President Donald Trump has made one thing clear: He will not filter himself, especially on his social media platforms. Most recently he has gone on Twitter to call the leader of North Korea, Kim Jongun, “short and fat” in response to comments made

by Jong-un about President Trump’s appearance.

Some students on the Texas Tech campus are not too pleased with how the president is using the social media platform. Meanwhile, other students say he has every right to post what he wants on his profile.

Shelby Oubre, a senior

English major from Garland, said Twitter could be a great tool. However, there is a fine line between using it to reach different audiences and using it to vent and insult others.

“I think Twitter is a good platform to reach the youth and can therefore be used by political figure heads like the president in order to give a brief overview of decisions,” Oubre said. “When Twitter is being used as a means to insult others and as a venting method, as it is now, the president is no longer representing America in a professional setting.”

Jamie Winegeart, a senior health care management major from Lubbock,

said this is just a sign of the times.

“Trump is the first to verbalize his thoughts on Twitter because this is today’s world,” she said. “Twenty first century technology has enabled anyone and everyone access to the internet and our president utilizes this tool. Sometimes to the extreme but other times it is completely professional.”

Ashleigh Austin, a junior public relations major from Fort Worth, said she believes if any other president posted anything like Trump’s controversial tweets, they would get the same treatment.

“I think if any president were very heated and argumentative in their tweets,

they would also get a negative reaction from the public,” Austin said.

In regards to President Trump’s recent tweets directed towards other world leaders, most notably Kim Jong-un, Oubre said this action could damage America’s relations with other countries.

“I think it’s important to remember that Trump himself is not making all of the country’s executive decisions regarding foreign relations,” Oubre said. “If anything is going to hurt our foreign relations, it will be his real life behaviors, not his Twitter tantrums.”

by Muslims.

The tweets drew a sharp condemnation from British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office, which said it was “wrong for the president to have done this.” May spokesman James Slack said the far-right Britain First group seeks to divide through its use of “hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions.”

Brushing off the criticism in an evening tweet, Trump said May instead of focusing on him should “focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom.”

Trump had turned away from taxes, North Korea and other issues facing his administration to share the three videos tweeted by Jayda Fransen, deputy leader

of the British group. It was not clear what drew him to the videos, though one had been shared by conservative commentator Ann Coulter the day before.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump was simply promoting border security and suggested that verifying the content was not a top concern.

“Whether it’s a real video, the threat is real and that is what the president is talking about,” she said.

The tweets read: “VIDEO: Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!” and “VIDEO: Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary!” and “VIDEO: Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!”

Trump made anti-Muslim comments one hallmark of his presidential campaign and has previously retweeted inflammatory posts from controversial Twitter accounts including some with apparent ties to white nationalist groups.

As president, he has sought to ban travel to the U.S. from a number of majority-

His promotion of the videos came two days after he mocked Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas” during an Oval Office event with Native American veterans, drawing criticism from of Native American war veter-

Austin said she feels a lot of Trump’s tweets are pretty irrational and are posted in the heat of the moment. Oubre said she agrees and believes the president should try harder to keep his posts more professional.

“I think he’s being irra-

tional,” Oubre said. “Just like professionals need to keep their social media clean, so should the president. A figure head of America should set the example, and right now Trump is essentially making it acceptable to give unsubstantiated opinions on an unprofessional platform.”

hrough my year and a half tenure as a columnist for The Daily Toreador, a few of my columns have depicted me sitting at the desk in my apartment, under a bright desk lamp, in only my underwear.

however, it is a visual I keep coming back to because law school often leaves me feeling very exposed.

While spending hours preparing for class, studying for finals, or learning how to write a trial brief, every insecurity, every fear, every instance of self-doubt I had ever pushed away or ignored, has made its way into my thoughts.

So, I did what I always did; I ignored it, told myself it was nothing and told myself I could get through it.

And for a year, it worked.

I ignored and avoided any instance of emotional distress I was experiencing. As these instances became more frequent and started piling up, I fought to tell myself I was fine. I did this until it became normal.

It became normal to be anxious, depressed and angry all the time. That became my normal law school experience.

It was not until I left that first summer did I realize something was wrong. That feeling of being anxious for what needed to get done the next day was still there, even after leaving the law school. I couldn’t sleep more than four hours at night. Everything bothered me, everything made me angry and I lashed out and blamed anyone who cared about me.

It took a long time for me to admit to myself that I was the problem, not the people around me. But, I didn’t like the person I had become.

The person I was before had never been cold-called.

He never paid close attention to how well his classmates spoke in class or how much they studied. Never worried so much about how he looked to others, or feared that everything he said or did around his classmates would be judged and mattered for his future.

I never was best described by the GPA on my résumé, the awards I acquired or the positions I held. I never set my sense of self-worth on the goals I was told to accomplish to get a good job. I never

or visiting family on holidays. Toward the end of my first year, every day, everywhere I went, and everything I did felt like I was still sitting at that desk in my apartment, in my underwear, studying under the heat of that desk lamp.

It took me a year to realize I didn’t want to feel like that forever. It took my best friend’s father admitting to me he dealt with these feeling in law school too, insecurities he still deals with even now as an attorney.

It took a year of doing things like grinding my teeth at night from stress so hard I broke them. Having thoughts that left me worrying how much time I was wasting not studying when I was sitting with my family for thanksgiving reaching for mashed potatoes. It took an entire year of these thoughts, losing myself, feeling like hell and pushing away the people I loved to realize this wasn’t something I could just get through.

I had to stop and address my own mental health for

the first time in my life. I asked for help. I talked to my psychologist. I researched and found ways to handle the issues I was struggling with.

And I did what I could to reach out and ask for forgiveness from the people I loved and pushed away.

And it isn’t like this for everyone. It isn’t like this for me every day; most days I just enjoyed what I’m learning, my professors, my friends and classmates.

These are feelings I still deal with every day. What’s different for me now is, I manage them as they come, rather than ignore and push them away.

I admit this because, if you are a law student or undergraduate and feel anything like this, I want you to know you’re not alone; the best way I know how to do that is by describing myself to you. And for me, admitting this to you isn’t difficult.

Woman reveals messages from Potential tax congressman in nude photo increase worrisome for conservatives AUSTIN (AP) — A conservative activist has released online messages she exchanged five years ago with Rep. Joe Barton in which he asked things like if she was wearing panties — a revelation that comes a week after the Texas Republican apologized for a nude photo of him that circulated on social media.

The Fort Worth Star Telegram reported Wednesday that it had obtained a series of exchanges on Facebook Messenger between Kelly Canon, a vocal opponent of red-light cameras and a tea party organizer in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, and Bar-

ton while he was still married to his second wife.

They included Barton asking after midnight in June 2012 whether Canon was “wearing a tank top only ... and no panties.”

Canon didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment from The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Barton confirmed the 2012 exchange with Canon to the Star Telegram but declined further comment.

Canon told the newspaper that Barton hasn’t apologized for the messages and that she’s not asked him to.

Barton, 68, is twice divorced.

WSO, Grounds Crew builds Carol of Lights wreath

The Women Service Organization contributes to the annual Texas Tech Carol of Lights ceremony in a big way – 314 square feet to be exact.

WSO creates the traditional Christmas wreath that is hung on the front of the Science building.

“Making the wreath is something that we have been doing for a while,” WSO Carol of Lights committee chair Briana Rodriguez, a senior kinesiology major from San Antonio, said. “It is a great way to give back to the university.”

The wreath’s diameter is 20 feet, WSO President Ann Sikes, a junior visual studies major from Liberty Hill, said. The organization has a wire frame

they fasten branches to in order to give the wreath the correct shape.

“We use fresh cut pine limbs that are provided to us by the TTU Grounds Crew,” Sikes said. “We use the same frame every year, and we zip tie the limbs onto the frame.”

The wreath is hung in place before the members begin attaching the branches.

The women use ladders and cherry pickers to reach the top of the wreath, WSO treasurer Morgan Ferrell, a senior English and French double major from Liberty Hill, said.

“We start working on the wreath the Monday of the week of the celebration,” Ferrell said. “It usually takes a couple of days to finish. Our members sign up for times to work starting at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. over the span of

four days. We have people signed up for all four days.”

WSO currently has 80 members, and Sikes said they encourage all of the members to participate.

After WSO is finished, the Grounds Crew covers the wreath with lights, Rodriguez said.

The wreath is placed directly above the stage where the guest speakers present during the Carol of Lights ceremony. It plays a big role in the ceremony because it is one of the first things that is lit up, Sikes said.

“We love doing it every year,” Rodriguez said. “We put a lot of time and effort into building it, and it is one of the biggest parts of the celebration. It is an ongoing tradition for us, and we are lucky to have the opportunity.”

A look into minorities in Thousands gather for past Disney productions Rockefeller tree lighting ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — "Coco" is earning praise from Mexican American audiences for its portrayal of Mexican culture and the holiday, "Day of the Dead."

The Disney-Pixar animated production hauled in an estimated $72.9 million over the five-day weekend and features an almost entirely Latino cast.

It comes after Disney's "Moana" — a computeranimated movie featuring a girl from a Polyne-

sian village — garnered mostly positive reaction from Polynesian audiences in 2016.

Both "Coco" and "Moana" used consultants to make sure the films were culturally sensitive.

Disney productions haven't always received praise for their portrayal of ethnic minorities.

In fact, some popular films have been attacked for reinforcing stereotypes or for simply being racist.

Rockettes secrets revealed NEW YORK (AP) — One of the biggest draws in New York this time of year is the "Christmas Spectacular" featuring the iconic Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. Everyone knows about their high kicks but do you know how many calories each burns? What do they snack on? What's the best place to be in their famous kick line? Two veterans — Bailey Callahan of Melbourne, Florida, and Alissa LaVergne of Houston — reveal all the backstage secrets.

There are 80 Rockettes, split into two teams of 36 dancers and four standbys. The 36 women can fit shoulder-to-shoulder along the 66-foot (20-meter) stage. They perform eight dance numbers per show, up to four shows daily, 200 shows a season.

The show produces 350

laundry loads weekly.

Rockettes must stand between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot10½ (roughly 1.7 to 1.8 meters) and be proficient at tap, jazz and ballet. Candidates must be ready to do 300 eye-high kicks a show.

One Rockette used a fitness tracker and discovered that she burned 1,000 calories every show. "When we do four shows a day, that's a lot of pizza that we get to eat," says Callahan.

Rockettes this year come from 27 states, plus Canada and Australia. New Jersey sent the most dancers, 12. Ohio is next with six.

Pennsylvania, Florida and California each have five; Michigan, New York and Arizona, four each; Maryland, three; Georgia, North Carolina, Indiana, Connecticut, Texas, Nebraska and Virginia, two each.

NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands have gathered in midtown Manhattan to watch the annual lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.

Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will flip the switch Wednesday night, illuminating the 75-foot-tall (22-meter-tall), 12-plus ton Norway spruce with 50,000 multicolored lights.

LONDON (AP) — With a royal wedding in the works, speculation is rising about the title that will be bestowed on Meghan Markle when she marries Prince Harry in the spring.

Will the American actress be a British princess? The answer is: sort of.

Markle's future noble ranking partly depends on what titles Queen Elizabeth II gives her and Harry on their May wedding day.

Markle, 36, will not formally be known as Princess Meghan because she is not of royal birth. However,

she will become Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales when she marries Harry, whose proper first name is Henry.

The speculation is that the queen will make Harry a duke, like his brother William, and Markle a duchess when they wed at Windsor Castle. In that case, Markle would properly be known as a duchess, not a princess.

"It's wrong to call a royal duchess 'princess' unless she's already a princess," royal historian Hugo Vickers said. "But they can do what they like. I'm sure the

press will call her Princess Meghan. I just hope they don't abbreviate it to Princess Megs."

Many royal observers think the queen will make the newlyweds the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, one of the few remaining "dukedoms" that is available.

In that case, Markle would become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.

That is similar to what happened to Kate Middleton when she married Prince William in 2011. The queen made the couple the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The situation can become quite confusing, in part because Britain's scrappy tabloid press helps shape how people are known.

H a r r y ' s m o t h e r, D i ana, was widely known as Princess Diana, but that was never her formal title. She was the Princess of Wales by virtue of her eventually unsuccessful marriage to Charles, the Prince of Wales.

Case weighs whether anti-police rap lyrics constitute threat HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A dispute over rap lyrics dropped Tuesday before Pennsylvania's highest court, where justices will have to decide whether they constitute a criminal threat to police or amount to protected speech under the First Amendment.

The state Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of Jamal Knox, who served time in state prison for the song he recorded after being arrested on drug charges.

Questions from the justices focused on whether Knox intended it as a true threat to officers and whether the reaction to the song by police is relevant to the criminal charges.

Knox's lawyer, Mikhail Pappas, told the court the case "involves very strong emotions," and called it "a tremendous opportunity to ensure that speech-based prosecutions do not affront the First Amendment."

He said threats in rap "are ubiquitous" and called Knox was an established artist.

Pappas suggested it was police who notified the media about the video almost immediately, undercutting the notion that officers were frightened by its message.

Frank Nepa, an assistant district attorney in Allegheny County, argued that Knox's defenders have generally avoided talking about what

the lyrics actually say.

"I can tell you in the Allegheny County district attorney's office, we're all for cathartic release, we're all for free expression," Nepa said.

"You can't say the things that Mr. Knox says in the video.

It crosses the line. It goes too far."

The song title is a vulgar three-word phrase that ends, "the Police." It includes the lines: "I got my Glock and best believe dog gonna bring the pump out and I'm hittin' your chest," as well as, "Let's kill these cops 'cause they don't do us no good."

The video taunts by name two officers involved in Knox's drug arrest and men-

tions Richard Poplawski, who is on death row in Pennsylvania for killing three Pittsburgh police officers in 2009.

Nepa said the law does not necessarily require a “direct communication” with the subject to amount to the crime of making terroristic threats.

Knox, 23, was charged after an officer in 2012 found a YouTube video of Knox performing the song under the name Mayhem Mal of the Ghetto Superstar Committee. He was later convicted of witness intimidation, making terroristic threats and conspiracy and served time in state prison before being released about a year ago.

Conservative group linked to woman who falsely accused Moore of misconduct NEW YORK (AP) — A conservative group known for undercover investigations has been linked to a woman who falsely told The Washington Post that Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore impregnated her as a teenager, the newspaper reported.

Moore has been accused

of multiple instances of sexual misconduct. But the Post determined that one accuser who approached the newspaper earlier in the month, identified as Jaime Phillips, made up a fake story likely designed to embarrass the newspaper.

The Post published a story Monday about its deal-

ings with Phillips. Earlier in the day, reporters from the newspaper saw Phillips walking into the New York offices of Project Veritas, a conservative group with a long track record of targeting Democratic groups and major media outlets, often by hiding their identities and using hidden cameras.

Manning has enjoyed a distinguished career, one that has led the Giants to having many successful seasons. Including the two times the team went to the Super Bowl in 2008 and 2012, Manning has led them to two NFC championships and six playoff berths, according to Pro Football Reference.

The Bills quickly corrected their mistake by bringing back Taylor, but would they be willing to bench or cut Taylor for Manning? Highly unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Cleveland Browns: Of course they have to be mentioned, but I honestly don’t think Manning will go to the Browns. However, it is possible. Would Manning be the answer to bring the

Browns out of the hole they can’t seem to escape? Time will tell.

Denver Broncos: With the troubles the Broncos are having at the quarterback spot with Brock Osweiler, Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian, could the Broncos be revived again by a second Manning? That would be interesting to see if both the Mannings bring the Broncos to a Super Bowl.

Indianapolis Colts: With Andrew Luck’s injury and rumors that he will never play football again, the Colts will need a quarterback either through the draft or by picking up Manning. Much like the Broncos, it would be interesting to see an-

Big 12 now guaranteed title game rematch The last Big 12 championship game rematch 10 years ago cost the league a national title shot.

Back then it was Oklahoma knocking off thenNo. 1 Missouri.

When the Big 12’s title game is revived Saturday after a six-season hiatus, it will be the No. 2 Sooners (11-1, 8-1, No. 3 CFP ) trying to stay in contention for a

national championship. They almost certainly have to beat No. 10 TCU (10-2, 7-2, No. 11 CFP) for the second time in four weeks to make it into the four-team College Football Playoff.

The Sooners might already be playoff-bound if they didn’t have another game to play. The Big 12 decided to revive the title game in hopes of an addi-

tional game for the playoff selection committee to weigh for the final rankings, which this season come on Sunday.

“You can sit there in any year and draw the scenario where it makes sense and where it doesn’t make sense,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. “The reality of it, and I get it, it’s not going to be perfect every single year.”

With the Big 12 now at 10 teams and playing a roundrobin schedule, one thing the championship game will be every year is a rematch of the top two teams in the conference standings.

That wasn’t always the case, not when the league had 12 teams in divisions from 1996-2010. Of the 15 previous title games, six of them were rematches.

Fister finalizes $4M deal with Rangers, who need starters Right-hander Doug Fister spent a lot less time on the free agent market this offseason, finalizing a $4 million, one-year deal Tuesday with the pitchingneedy Texas Rangers that could be worth up to $11.5 million over two seasons.

After being unsigned last season until May, Fister became the first of this year’s 166 major

league free agents to complete a big league contract and the first to switch teams.

“The Rangers approached me with a quality offer, and I figured it was definitely a fair one, and I think that was something we both can benefit from,” Fister said. “That’s kind of why I went ahead and went with it.”

Asked if his experience

last year made him want to move a bit more quickly this offseason, Fister responded, “I’m sure that it had something to play into all of this.”

Fister moves into a Rangers rotation that had only left-handers Cole Hamels and Martin Perez signed for next season. Fister will get a $3.5 million base salary

for next year, and the contract includes a $4.5 million team option for 2019 with a $500,000 buyout.

He can make an additional $500,000 annually in performance bonuses based on innings up to 190, and his 2019 salary could escalate up to $7 million based on innings.

Freshmen make impact in No. 22 Tech’s start

After its first six games of the season, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team holds a perfect record of 6-0, the team’s best start to a season since 2009.

A strong factor in that record is the play of the Red Raider freshmen who have been instrumental in several of Tech’s wins so far.

This year the men’s basketball team consists mostly of seniors and freshmen, with a few juniors on the team as well.

The seniors are in their second year with coach Chris Beard and have started every game this season.

Of Tech’s seven freshman, three have scored more than 30 points this season. Freshman guard Jarrett Culver is second on the team in points with 66 on the season, with fellow freshman guard Zhaire Smith trailing him with 54 points, the third highest total on the team.

Alongside Smith and Culver, freshman guard Davide Moretti has scored 36 points, while also picking up 17 assists, second most on the team, according to Tech Athletics. “(Moretti and Smith) are just talented freshmen, I’d

The high-scoring combo of Smith and Culver are coming off their best game as a pair, scoring 17 and 18 points respectively in Tech’s 103-69 win over Savannah State on Saturday, Nov. 25. The duo helped contribute to 62 bench points the Red Raiders scored in that game, according to Tech Athletics. “(Culver) is coachable just like all the freshmen we have,” junior forward Norense Odiase said. “Everything coach says, he just soaks it up and he’s ready to play every night.

That’s the biggest thing, all of our guys are coachable.”

Smith started the season strong, scoring 14 and 11 points in the first two games of the season respectively.

Smith has scored more than five points in every game of the season except against Wofford, and has been active in the paint, getting four or more rebounds in every game except against Wofford,

according to Tech Athletics.

Culver’s best games of the season have come more recently, with a 21-point game against Wofford followed by his 18-point game against Savannah State. Culver has scored in the double-digits four times this season, while also picking up 19 rebounds and seven steals, according to Tech Athletics. He has also been one of Tech’s best perimeter threats, making 10 three-pointers, good for first on the team, while shooting .357 percent from outside.

“Culver is a talented young guy, I think he would the first to tell you a lot of credit for big games to his teammates,” Beard said. “Especially those veteran guys that let him shoot the ball that much, but that’s a joke, we want Jarrett to shoot the ball that much. I love it when he is aggressive, he is like a lot of other young players around the country, when he is aggressive he can really, really help.”

Moretti has seen time at point guard this season for the Red Raiders and has been one of Tech’s best three-point shooters, with eight scored threes, tied for second on the team. Moretti trails starting senior point guard Keenan

Evans closely in assists with 17 assists this season.

Moretti scored 10 points in his first game as a Red Raider, his best scoring game so far. He is shooting .381 percent from the perimeter, second best on the team amongst players with at least 10 attempts, according to Tech Athletics.

Together, the trio of Smith, Moretti and Culver has provided Tech a spark off the bench, and the results have been exceedingly positive for the Red Raiders, with the team’s undefeated streak still alive.

The freshmen will face one of their biggest challenges of the season on Thursday, Nov. 30, as the Red Raiders take on Seton Hall at 5:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden, the home of the NBA New York Knicks.

“I give a lot of our older player credit for (Culver’s) development, (Moretti’s) development, (Zhaire’s) development,” Beard said. “These young guys are playing with a lot of confidence, and from a coaching standpoint I’d like to think we instill that, but it’s also those guys they play with, Keenan Evans has to have to believe in Culver to have games like that, and he does.” @AustinWattsDT

Michigan sports doctor pleads guilty to assault

A disgraced Michigan sports doctor who admits he sexually assaulted female gymnasts and possessed child pornography pleaded guilty Wednesday in a third criminal case, acknowledging that he molested girls who sought treatment for injuries.

Larry Nassar, who worked at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics, said he molested girls with his hands at Twistars gymnastics club in Eaton County, near Lansing. A week ago, he made a separate but similar guilty plea nearby in Ingham County, the home of his campus clinic.

“Guilty, your honor,” Nas-

sar told a judge in response to charges involving a girl under 13 and two teenagers at Twistars, where gymnasts with hip and back injuries would line up to seek his help.

Nassar, 54, has dropped his claim that he was performing legitimate treatment with his ungloved hands.

In a third case, Nassar will be sentenced in federal court on Dec. 7 for possessing child pornography. He faces decades in prison. Meanwhile, more than 100 women and girls are suing him.

“I’m so horribly sorry that this was like a match that turned into a forest fire out of control,”

Nassar told a judge last week.

The owner of Twistars, John Geddert, declined to comment Wednesday. He referred to a statement last March in which he expressed “zero knowledge” of the allegations against Nassar.

The criminal cases followed reports last year in The Indianapolis Star about how USA Gymnastics mishandled complaints about sexual misconduct involving the doctor and coaches. Women and girls said the stories inspired them to step forward with detailed allegations of abuse.

Olympians Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas say they were victims.
