CAROL OF LIGHTS By RYAN ORTEGON

s the Christmas season approaches, Texas Tech celebrated its 57th annual Carol of Lights celebration Tuesday night at Memorial Circle and the Science Quadrangle. People from around the Lubbock community gathered on the sidewalks and streets to catch a glimpse of the illuminated buildings. The first Carol of Lights took place at Tech in 1959. The inspiration for this event came from Dr. Gene Hemmle in the 1950s when he and a group of students gathered in Memorial Circle to sing Christmas carols,
according to the University Housing website. Since then, Carol of Lights has been a tradition at Tech that has been carried down from generation to generation. A team from the University Physical Plant starts placing various bulbs of different colors and sizes around the Tech campus in September. During the ceremony, the members of the Residence Halls Association were introduced and thanked for their contribution to making the ceremony possible, as well as various sponsors from Tech and the Lubbock community.
