or most of the students and faculty on the Texas Tech campus, the semester is winding down. For their president, things are probably going to get busier. It has been a whirlwind of a year for Lawrence Schovanec, who was announced Tech’s 17th president in early July. Now that his first full semester as president of the institution is coming to a close The Daily Toreador was granted an interview to speak with him about his new role within the university. “Throughout the search process (for a new president) there was a clear standout,” Chancellor Robert L. Duncan said of Schovanec during a news conference in June. “After conducting interview with the candidates, the Board of Regents met in June to select Texas Tech University (then) Provost Dr. Lawrence Schovanec as the sole finalist for the president’s position.” Since Schovanec officially started as president in August, he has been instrumental in launching various programs on campus, starting initiatives to help students graduate, opening a campus abroad and expanding the university system. The most recent accomplishment for Schovanec was the groundbreaking of a new standalone campus in San José, Costa Rica, in October.

On this day 75 years ago, the Empire of Japan led a surprise attack on the United States’ Pacific Fleet and air fields at Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Hawaii. In honor of this pivotal event in U.S. history, the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library is displaying an exhibit featuring excerpts from interviews with survivors of Pearl Harbor, Japanese World War II veterans and letters from George Mahon, a congressman from the South Plains who voted in favor of declaring war

on Japan. “I had the opportunity over the last 15 years to interview these two survivors of Pearl Harbor,” David Marshall, archivist for the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, said. “I pulled out some excerpts of when they were talking about the attack.” Victor Lively, a gunner’s mate on the USS Nevada, said the ship survived the initial attack but was given the order to sink itself to prevent it from sinking somewhere else, potentially blocking the harbor.

University of Houston-Downtown campus names Muñoz sole finalist for president position Juan Muñoz has been named the sole finalist for the presidency of University of Houston-Downtown, according to a UHD news release. Muñoz currently serves as vice provost for undergraduate education and student affairs and senior vice president for institutional diversity, equity and community engagement at Texas Tech. Muñoz will fill in for UHD Interim President Michael Olivas, who was appointed to the position by University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator in

February, according to the release. “Under Dr. Munoz’s leadership, Texas Tech has made significant progress in areas of diversity, student sucMUOZ cess and community engagement. Texas Tech is a better institution because of his contributions," Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said in an email. "He has been a wonderful colleague and a dear friend, and I will miss

working with him. Juan (Muñoz) is most deserving of this wonderful opportunity, and I am happy for him." A national search was chaired by UH-Clear Lake President William Staples to fill the UHD presidency, according to the release. Texas law requires that 21 days must pass before the UH System Board of Regents can formalize the appointment. “University of Houston-Downtown plays a vital role in our UH System’s overall delivery of

higher education resources to this region," Khator said in the release. "We are fortunate to have an experienced educator and inspiring administrator of Dr. Muñoz’s caliber lead this institution.” Muñoz joined Tech as an associate professor in the College of Education in 2004 and served as a special assistant to the president, according to the release. He joined the provost’s office in 2006 and has earned various leadership positions during his tenure at

Tech, including becoming senior vice president for institutional diversity, equity and community engagement in 2009. Muñoz was named vice provost in 2010. "I am very grateful to the Board of Regents and Chancellor Khator for this remarkable opportunity to be part of this dynamic institution and system to further set a standard of educational excellence that will serve as a model for the country," Muñoz said in the article. @MichaelCantuDT
