Derived from the visual perception theories of German psychologists in the 1920s, Gestalt translates to “unified whole. The Gestalt theories explain human perception of objects as organized patterns. It is believed that the mind is wired to see these patterns in the stimulus based on a set of rules.

Symmetry establishes a center of balance with a central axis or line. The relationship between elements on either side of the axis creates order. Variations in size, color, or shape can add or take away from the symmetry of an image.

Derived from the psychological understanding of equilibrium, balance plays a key role in the success of a design. Balanced compositions are static; the viewer will focus on the message of design. Imbalanced compositions are dynamic and create a sense of instability and movement.

desn 200 in the graphic design program at the kcai—michael kidwell, assistant professor.

The process in creating the visual order newspaper was very experimental. I stepped out of my comfort zone in Photoshop, editing photos in extreme ways. As my first document created with InDesign, I know there is still a lot to learn, but my first attempt has been an exciting project. Special thanks to models Sam and Sarah Ferrer.
