What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. As it is written:
“See,I layinZionastone thatcausespeople tostumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
MATTHEW 13.24-30
Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
“The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weedscomefrom?’
“‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.
“Theservantsaskedhim,‘Doyouwantustogoandpullthemup?’
“‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time, I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundlestobeburned;thengatherthewheatandbringitintomybarn.’
FEAST OF DISCOVERY OF ST. MARY’S BOX
This Sunday, the Armenian church is celebrating one of the 8 feasts, that Armenian church dedicated to the Holy Mother of God: The Feast of Discovery of St. Mary's Box, in which she kept her veil.
According to tradition, while on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, two Greek princes came across to an astounding discovery. In one of the villages in Galilee, they saw many people gathered at a Jewish woman's house, where was a box with miraculous power of healing. The brothers arranged for an imitation box to be made and switched it with the box of the Holy Mother. They returned to Constantinople and presented it to the Patriarch. They were received with a celebration and the box was placed in the Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Mother Mary. The PatriarchthenestablishedtheFeastoftheDiscoveryofSt.Mary’sBox.
The celebration of the Discovery of the Box o f St. Mary was introduced in the Armenian Church during the revisions made by Catholicos Simeon Yerevantzi (Catholicos 1763-1780), who accepted this tradition from the Greek Orthodox Church in the late 18th century. The feast of Discovery of the Box is a movable feast and falls on the fifth Sunday after Pentecost (June 14-July 18).
COMMEMORATIONOFCHRIST’STWELVEAPOSTLESAND THIRTEENTH APOSTLE - ST.
This year on July 8 the Armenian Church celebrates the Commemoration day of Christ’s twelve Apostles and 13th Apostle - St. Paul. The word apostle derives from the Greek word apostellein which means "one who is sent away" (a messenger). The names of 12 apostles
were: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); and Andrew (brother of Peter), and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus (Judas, Jude, brother of James), and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. (Mark 3:16).
The twelve Apostles were chosen by Our Lord Jesus Christ, who called them Apostles, and gave them power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons (Mark 3:15). He sent them to preach about the Kingdom of Heaven. He gave them advice and instructions, explaining to them the difficulties they will encounter (Matt. 10: 5-42).
Later instead of Judas Iscariot Apostle Matthias was chosen, who was added to the group of eleven apostles. The apostles went to all people and preached and taught the Commandments of Jesus, baptized them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. One of the greatest preachers of Christ’s commandments is Apostle Paul, who is recognized by the Christian Church as the thirteenth Apostle. Paul was initially an enemy of Christians and persecuted them. He had a vision on the road to Damascus and became a fervent Christian convert and was subsequently responsible in large measure for the rapid spread of Christianity. Many of the New Testament books (aside from the four Gospels) are from the writings of Paul. The book of Acts is dedicated to the apostles’ work after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Armenian Church commemorates the 12 Apostles and Apostle Paul on the Saturday preceding the Eve of The Fast of Transfiguration.
