2 TIMOTHY
2.15-19
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”
JOHN
6.39-47
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ d Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
200 HOLY FATHERS OF THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF EPHESUS
AUGUST 10
On August 1, the Armenian church commemorates the 200 Holy Fathers of the Council of Ephesus (431 AD). The third Universal Ecumenical Council, was convened inEphesus by the order of Emperor Theodosius IIto settle the Nestorian heresy.
About 200 Pontiffs attended this council, which was presided by Patriarch Cyril of Alexandria. Nestorius was the Patriarch of Constantinople, and according to his teaching there were two independent, contrasting natures in Christ: divine and human. Nestorius preached that Christ was born as a simple man and only later Divinity was settled in His Person, and therefore, the Holy Virgin Mary was not Godmother, but the mother of a simple man.
The Council approved the title of Theotokos for the Virgin Mary. Even though the Armenian Church did not participate in this Council, it accepted the canons and decisions passed during the council.
The Armenian Church recognizes the first three ecumenical councils: Council of Nicaea (325); Council of Constantinople (381); Council of Ephesus (431) and dedicated commemoration days in its Liturgical Calendar for all three.
