2 CORINTHIANS
1.1-11
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God in Corinth, together with all his holy people throughout Achaia:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in your patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, aabout the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace. For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.
MARK 4:35-40
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”.
DISCOVERY OF THE BELT OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
This Sunday September 1, the Armenian church is celebrating The Feast of Discovery of St.Mary’sBelt. It is believedthat the Belt was originally made by St. Mary herself and was given to Apostle Thomas. The Holy Mother of God was assumed to heaven by her Divine Son and there are no relics of her earthly body. Therefore, her personal belongings became articles of devotion: her Belt and her Box. Her Belt or girdle, was discovered in Jerusalem in the fifth century during the reign of Emperor Arcadius, which was later moved to Constantinople and placed in the Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Mother of God. According to tradition, after Empress Zoe (the wife of Emperor Leo VI the Wise) was healed by the power of the Belt, she embroidered it with gold thread. Before 18th century the celebration of the Discovery of the Belt of the Holy Mother of God was considered a voluntary practice. It was established into the Calendar of Feasts (Տօնացոյց) of the Armenian Church during the revisions made by Catholicos Simeon Yerevantzi (Catholicos 1763-1780). The Feast of the Discovery of St. Mary’s Belt is celebrated on the second Sunday following the Feast of Assumption, which falls somewhere from August 26 to September 1.
