Protect children’s eyes from UV rays Children’s vision is at greater risk of damage from UV rays than adults’, warn Canadian doctors of optometry.

Wearing sun glasses to shield their eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation is just as important as slapping on sunscreen to protect their skin. Just as the sun causes sunburn, UV light is also absorbed by the tissue of the eye and can cause serious eye damage.

Children are more vulnerable than adults, says Dr. Riaz Ahmed, spokesperson for Doctors of Optometry Canada.

“The crystalline lens in children’s eyes is less capable of filtering UV than in adult eyes, resulting in greater risk for internal eye damage later in life,”says Dr. Ahmed.

“This is particularly concerning as children spend more time outdoors than the average adult. It’s estimated that children receive approximately three times the annual adult dose of UV.” Because exposure is cumulative, direct contact with sunlight for even short periods of time can cause several long-term eye health problems, many of which begin symptom-free. For kids, the first years are formative to their future vision and eye health, says Dr. Ahmed.

The World Health Organization estimates that up to 80 per cent of a person’s lifetime exposure to damaging UV radiation occurs before the age of 18. Condi-

tions directly related to it include: cataracts, macular degeneration, cornea sunburn, tissue growths on the surface of the eye that can eventually block vision, as well as eyelid skin cancer and malignant melanomas in the eye.

Protecting your child now will decrease the potential for serious eye problems later in life. A close-fitting, wrap around style frame that protects both the skin around the eye, as well as the eye itself, is recommended. So, too, are 100 per cent UVA and UVB blocking lenses. A wide-brimmed hat tops things off.

While tests have shown that inexpensive sunglasses can provide full UV protection, the quality of materials and consistency of the tints may be inferior. Such imperfections can distort children’s vision, causing a mild headache or eyestrain when sunglasses are worn.

“Before choosing sunglasses, children should have a thorough eye examination to ensure their eyes are healthy and to take any current eye conditions into consideration,” says Dr. Ahmed. “At the very least, have their sunglasses assessed by a doctor optometry to ensure that your child is wearing a good quality product.”

Beat the heat naturally The freedom of summer, the extra playtime outdoors, and the sweltering sauna that Toronto often becomes can result in a slew of small injuries, from skinned knees to sunburns to heat stroke and tummy aches, many of which you can treat at home without the use of antibiotics or other over-the-counter medications.

Giselle Lefebvre, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, says using natural remedies can reduce the stress of an injury for both you and your child.

“I think it’s important to use herbal remedies because it’s often less taxing on the body, and the relief of being able to treat something yourself, with the materials you have close at hand, can calm you down.”

When it comes to heat stroke, hydration, and keeping cool, Lefebvre says it’s important to monitor your child’s fluid intake.

“It’s crucial to keep kids hydrated, but I don’t recommend sports drinks because they contain high levels of sugar and salt.”

Jazmine Stinson, CNP, registered holistic nutritionist, and owner of Little Tree Wellness, agrees, adding that you can sneak in some healthy ingredients that kids will actually enjoy.

“Keeping your kids hydrated and well nourished is crucial while they are active and burning calories in the heat of the sun. Instead of grabbing a pop or high sugared juices, cool them off with homemade mint lemonade. This will provide them with some vitamin C, help immune function, aid digestion, alkalinize the body, and keep them hydrated, all while tasting great!”

Dehydration can also be caused by diarrhoea , an ailment all too common in the summer months when kids are eating new foods, and coming in contact with germs they avoid in the colder months.

TORONTO KIDS - July 2013 | 13 Lefebvre says the best diet for diarrhoea is what is called the BRATTY diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, tea and yogurt, adding that those foods are the only foods children with diarrhoea should attempt to eat.

Many clinicians feel that restricting food intake during this time, especially difficult to digest substrates such as fats and proteins, helps to shorten the duration of the diarrhea (and also nausea and vomiting).

The potassium in bananas is wonderful for replacing lost minerals, while the rice is a nice simple food it’s full of good carbohydrates the body doesn’t have to work too hard to digest.

Once the nausea has resolved, and hunger returns, the BRATTY diet can be supplemented with carbohydrates, which are easier to metabolize.

“A good replacement

drink to calm an upset stomach is nettle tea,” Lefebvre adds.

If your child isn’t the tea-drinking type, Stinson shares a helpful hint that can turn even the pickiest eater into a tea lover.

“For variety, grab your favorite organic herbal tea, steep it then put it on ice! This is an excellent way to get some extra plant nutrients with endless options. Add some honey for a natural sweetener that is chalk full of antioxidants, minerals and energy providing calories.”

If steeped strong enough, the tea can also be frozen to create custom popsicles right at home.

For added nutrition and an extra treat, and as a great way to lower a high body temperature resulting from summer sun and excess heat, Stinson suggests blending your own custom smoothies at home using your child’s favourite fruits (and even vegetables!) as ingredients.

“Another great option is to make your own fruit smoothies and then freeze them in a popsicle holder. For an antioxidant powerhouse, try blending seasonal and local cherries, blueberries, strawberries with almond or coconut milk. This provides an array of phytonutrients and healthy fats that are essential for your growing kids.”
