When his parents send him to summer camp for the first time, Ethan has just three goals. First, to survive. Second, not to be hated. Third, not to be the worst at anything. Instead, Ethan’s real challenge comes in the form of a new cabin mate. Zachary arrives at camp late, surrounded by a cloud of rumors. And unlike Ethan, Zach doesn’t seem to care what anybody thinks of him, even Amber Levine — the girl with an easy smile and a freckle on one knee.

entertain > dinner party

Invite the kids to dinner Host a child-friendly dinner party adults will enjoy Adults with children typically leave the kids with a babysitter when attending a dinner parties with colleagues or friends. But some hosts choose to make their dinner parties kid-friendly. This can make things easier on guests, who won’t have to go to the trouble or expense of hiring a babysitter for the night. It also can make things easier on hosts with children of their own and don’t want to add finding a sitter to their list of things to do in the days leading up to the party. Kids can add some life to a dinner party, but hosts may choose to employ a few strategies to ensure their kid-friendly dinner parties are enjoyable for adults and children alike. • Feed the kids first. Kids can’t ignore their appetites as long as their adult counterparts, so make sure dinner

for the kids is served once all of them have arrived. Choose kid-friendly fare like pizza or macaroni and cheese so kids are more likely to eat and not complain of hunger later in the evening. Feeding the kids first also makes it easier for adults to enjoy uninterrupted conversation when it’s their turn to sit down and eat. • Keep the kids entertained. Whether it’s a movie or a board game, finding something to keep the kids entertained throughout the night should be a priority for hosts. A selection of movies that kids can choose from might be your best bet, as films that are between 90 and 120 minutes long can keep youngsters occupied for much of the night. Let kids watch their movies in a playroom that’s separate from where adult guests will be gathering

prior to dinner, and periodically check in on the kids as the night progresses. Provide some snacks like popcorn or even some candy to create a night at the movies atmosphere for kids. • Remind kids to be gracious hosts. When choosing activities for kids, remind your own children that it’s their responsibility to be gracious hosts, even if that means playing games they aren’t interested in or watching movies they have already seen. Let youngsters know in advance that if they fulfill their responsibilities at hosts they can choose how to spend the following day or weekend. • Choose an adult entree that’s simple to prepare. No matter how well behaved kids may be before and during a dinner party, hosts should not add to their already consider-

able workload by preparing an especially complicated meal for their adult guests. Keep things simple, especially if you are preparing a separate meal for the kids. Much of the stress of hosting a dinner party comes with preparing the meal, and that may only prove more stressful if you are preparing two meals while simultaneously catering

to the needs of your youngest guests. Hosting a kid-friendly dinner party can make for a memorable night for parents and their children. Hosts can make the night even better by employing several strategies to make the party feel like a more traditional affair even if the kids are in the next room.

get active > yogapalooza

Stretch out the

last days of summer

Yogapalooza brings the fun outdoors at Harbourfront Centre Make the most of the last few weeks before school starts with a fun-filled weekend of yoga, music and dance at Yogapalooza. Whether you’re a regular yogi looking to bring your kids to their first practice or just looking to try something new this summer, yoga by the water is a great way to bring the family together. Now in it’s fifth year, Yogapalooza has always been family-friendly. “Because of the large number of kids attending,

we developed an area specially for kids,” says festival director, Salimah KassimLakha. All weekend long, the Kids Space will run classes for kids of all ages and experience levels – from babies in strollers and toddlers to kids up to 10-years-old. Classes include Partner Yoga, YogaFit for Kids, Read with Me Family Yoga, Laughter Yoga, a joyful class that connect breath, movement and laughter, and Meditative Dance, a fun class full of natural movement with a breath of sound. Kids ages 10 and up are welcome at the main stage, where yoga, martial arts and dance classes will get them moving. Introducing your kids to yoga is not only a fun way to get moving, it also is

a great way to teach your kids coordination, balance and to work with each other in a fun and noncompetitive way. Kids are already flexible, but yoga offers an opportunity to gain the same stress-relieving benefits as adults, especially for kids starting school for the first time. Yoga and breathing helps them recognize when they are tense, angry or bored and learn to take long, calming breaths. When your session is over, feel free to roam the Wholesome Market and see what else the Harbourfront Centre has to offer. Yogapalooza takes place August 16 and 17 at the Harbourfront Centre. Check out yogapalooza.ca for class times and descriptions.

T.O. Tip!

Community centres all over the city offer yoga classes for children. Kids learn a series of postures promoting flexibility, specific breathing and relaxation techniques, while strengthening and toning muscles. Various styles are offered. For more information visit efun.toronto.ca

parenting > clean up

Clean your mess! You’ve threatened, cajoled – even begged your kids to tidy up. But it still seems you’re the one facing the ultimatum: either ignore the mess or do it for them. Not anymore! Here are seven tips for getting your kids onboard, without raising your voice or losing your mind: Be age-appropriate: Toddlers can put toys in a bin, but don’t have the reach to make a bed. An eight-year-old can fold the clothes on the floor, but doesn’t have the strength to push the vacuum. Be mindful of their age when assigning tasks. Job a day: Just like you don’t do laundry or schlep garbage every day, kids benefit from a breakdown. Help

them decide which day to reshelve their books or recycle the papers on their desks. Make a simple chart. Tag teaming: If you’ve got more than one child, suggest they divide and conquer. Perhaps one child sorts the toys into piles (great for younger kids) in both rooms and the other puts them away. Rewarding great cleaning: Why not snap a photo of your child standing in front of a clean bedroom? Or make a quick sign to tape to their door, describing the great work within? Natural consequences: Brainstorm together about consequences for persistently untidy rooms. Perhaps play-dates only happen when

a room is presentable? Or some of the Lego left on the ground is donated to kids in need. Offer perspective: Learn what children around the world do for their jobs. Engage your kids in discussions about what kind of work is safe or dangerous for kids their age. World Vision has a page looking at the dangers facing kids who help with chocolate production at www.nochildforsale.ca. Cleaning with love: To reward consistently good room-tidying, you could involve your children in making a small monthly donation to a charity helping real child labourers.
