an awesome

olympics With the Olympic Winter Games underway, now is a great time for families to get in the Olympic spirit! Get your kids active and excited about Winter Sports! This month, challenge your kids to put down the electronics and other gadgets and have them spend some time “training” to go for the gold. You can gather the neighbourhood kids and friends and host your own version of the Winter Games. Select a few outdoor games to play, and divide kids into teams or countries. You can provide gold, silver and bronze medals if you want. Think of easy, even silly, activities for the little ones, and tougher contests for the older ones — and

make sure everyone gets a prize. Or, hand everyone an Olympic-themed lootbag at the end of the event. Here are some ideas: • Snowball Archery: (aiming for a target with snowballs) • A three-legged boot race through the snow • Jumping over snow "hurdles” • Snowball throwing contest (who can throw the furthest) • Best snowman or snow angels • A street Hockey Game • A Bobsledding competition (with Toboggans of course!) • Winter Bean Bag Toss Don’t forget to pack hot cocoa in Thermoses, with marshmallows, for a special treat. Let the games begin! – toronto4kids.com

Look out for locals! An impressive fifteen of Canada’s Sochi Olympians were born right here in Toronto! Why not make a game of spotting them on TV with your kids during this month’s Olympic games!

Olympics

by Robert Munsch Illustrated by: Michael Chesworth Age Level: 3-6 Reading Level: Beginnr

All over the world, people are getting ready for the Olympics. Runners, swimmers, skiers, and skaters are practicing; teams are learning to work together. Meanwhile, workers are making flags, medals, uniforms and equipment. But soon the Olympic torch will be lighted and the games will start.

Great Olympic Reads!

Boo k

Freeze Frame: A History of the Winter Olympics

Nook!

While Tacky’s friends train for the winter games, he sleeps during sit-ups, pigs out on pizza and doughnuts, and goofs off late into the night. The author brings in many facets of the Olympics: training before the games, the march of the athletes into the stadium for the opening ceremonies that include the lighting of a torch. Of course, there are also differences between these games and the televised ones — for skis, the penguins strap frozen fish to their feet!

In this rhyming adventure, Mr. Magee and his dog Dee learn to ski. They didn’t expect to run into a very curious moose, however, which turns their outing inton a real cliffhanger!

By: Sue Macy Age Level: 6-9 Reading Level: Independent

The winter games began in France in 1924. This compelling examination of their start, the evolution of the games, and more are revealed in photographs and compelling text. It is current through the 2006 winter Olympic Games.

Lobsters and sting rays and sharks - OH MY! Discover the wonders of the water world at Toronto's newest and most thrilling attraction, Ripley's Aquarium of Canada. Containing over 5.7 million litres of water, the 12,500 square metre (135,000 square foot) interactive attraction plunges guests in a one-of-a-kind underwater adventure that showcases more than 16,000 marine animals and over 450 species. Canadian Waters Gallery: The exhibit begins with the Canadian Waters Gallery featuring 17 exhibits of aquatic animals from Canada's very own backyard including extremely rare electric blue lobsters from the Atlantic Ocean, unusual Arctic Grayling, giant Pacific octopuses, and a 180-degree Pacific Kelp panel exhibit with wave-making actions that simulate the British Columbia shoreline. You’ll be impressed by the incredible collection of fish who live right here! Dangerous Lagoon: This is the largest exhibit in the aquarium featuring a football-field length glass viewing tunnel. You’ll find yourself nose to nose with nature’s most perfect predator: the shark. Visitors will feel like they are literally swimming among these mysterious creatures along with the green sea turtles, sawfish, and moray eels that inhabit this pool. One

of the most awe-inspiring sights is the saw-wielding sawfish who lies quietly across the tunnel. Planet Jellies: Planet Jellies is where visitors will be mesmerized by the hypnotic dance of Pacific sea nettle jellyfish which illuminate in an array of breathtaking colours from within the world's largest kreisel tank. These simple yet complex creatures will take your breath away. Rainbow Reef: The 420,000 litre Rainbow Reef tank features over 60 varieties of colourful species from the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific regions. Get an up-close look at tangs, surgeonfish, angles, butterfly fish, damsels, chromis, and the popular clownfish (Nemo!). This exhibit offers an interactive dive show every other hour, with divers that communicate via microphone to visitors outside the habitats. Touch Tanks: Fun and friendly educators will help you make contact, while teaching you about the amazing creatures at your fingertips. This is a great chance for kids to get their hands wet and play with stingrays, horseshoe crabs, and various types of smaller sharks. Discovery Centre: Kids have a place at Ripley’s Aquarium they can call their own. The fun-for-all-ages

Discovery Centre is an area where little ones can take a break from the exhibits and have some educational fun. Here young visitors will find a tsunami simulator, Great Lakes locks exhibit, yellow 'research' submarine, Shark Reef crawl tunnel, and bubble peekaboo popups among adorable puffer fish or the ever-popular clown fish aquariums. . Ray Bay: Dozens of sting rays playfully swim across a large viewing area and to the surface of the interactive Ray touch pool. Feel the wonder as these graceful fish glide effortlessly through the water and under your fingertips.

The Gallery: The Gallery features exotic marine life such as the delicate sea horse and leafy sea dragons, as well as some of the world's most poisonous fish piranhas, lionfish, and stone fish. Life Support System: The tour ends with a unique view of a gallery which showcases the life support and filtration equipment used to maintain this stateof-the-art Aquarium. Visitors can get a behind the scenes look at actual Life Support System of two of the Aquarium's largest tanks. For more info, visit ripleysaquariumofcanada.com. – toronto4kids.com

Visit Riverdale Farm Amidst this year’s cold harsh winter, a recent balmy day led us to a visit to Riverdale Farm. This quaint little farm in the heart of city remains open all year long, even throughout the colder months.

Things to do: 1. Visit the lower ponds: a natural refuge in the heart of the city. 2. Indulge in fresh bread made in the heritage bread oven and take part in activities for kids which explain where food comes from. 3. Interact with farm animals in a turn of the century farm. Learn about the period’s live stock. 4. Discover the restored buildings, new and old! Visit the Fancy Barns, the Victorian stye Simpson house, the Pig and Poultry barn, the Drivershed, the Meeting House, The Residence and much more!

Though the butterfly-herb-flower-vegetable gardens were submerged in snow, the scenic 7.5 acres along pathways through snowy wooded areas and around frozen ponds made for picturesque scenery. The Riverdale Farm buildings and natural surroundings reflect a typical, small Ontario farm of the late 19th to early 20th century. The Farm is home to a variety of domestic farm animals that were on hand to greet us. A visit to the farm, even in colder weather, is a great way to experience animals up-close. The Riverdale Farm was originally the site of Toronto’s first zoo: The Riverdale Zoo. It was located on the west bank of the Don River and operated from 1894 to 1974. When the zoo closed, many of the animals relocated to a new, much larger facility in Scarborough, currently known as the Toronto Zoo. Walking through the Farm today is a walk through an important piece of Toronto’s history. The Residence, the Donnybrook and the

outandabout Get cracking on camp! Though we’ve just said goodbye to a chilly January, it’s already time to start thinking about what to do with the kids when warmer weather approaches. If you’ve not already signed your kids up for March Break programming or camps, now is the time! Programs city-wide are filling up fast, so it’s crucial to act quickly if you’re hoping to secure a spot. And while the little ones are enjoying their March activities, parents should be thinking ahead to summer camps. Most overnight and full time programs fill up months in advance, whether it’s sports, arts, or music!

Save your receipts when you sign your kids up for fitness, artistic, or developmental activities. At tax time, claim the children's arts credit (www.cra.gc.ca/ artscredit) and the children's fitness credit (www.cra.gc.ca/fitness) on your income tax and benefit return. You can claim the fees you've paid for eligible activities up to $500 per child, per tax credit. This gives you a non-refundable credit of up to $75 per tax credit per child. Look into it—the money you save might be enough to buy your child a new swimsuit or cover the gas money to get to lessons or practices. – with files from newscanada.com
