School’s out, now what? Summer child care options for busy parents With school out this month, you’re about to have your hands full. Working parents, and those who need to run errands during the day are often faced with child care dilemmas during the summer holiday. Camps are a great way to keep children busy, but they don’t often run throughout the whole summer, while day cares fill up fast and aren’t always a feasible option. If you’re looking for affordable, trustworthy child care, here are some solutions to keep your kids happy, healthy and social this summer while you’re out and about.
ORGANIZE A BABY-SITTING CO-OP Connect with a few parents in your neighbourhood and create a baby-sitting cooperative that you can all take advantage of. No Name Baby-Sitting Co-op in Leaside has been active for more than 30 years. It’s designed for parents of young children who need childcare, whether it’s for a quick appointment during the day or a long evening out. The parents meet once a month to get to know each other and the rest of the month trade off no-cost child care. They save money and don’t have to impose on family and friends. Reaching out to parents in your child’s school is a great way to start a baby-sitting coop - the children already know each other and you can connect with a large group of parents you’re already comfortable with.
JOIN THE YMCA Check your local YMCA for summer care pro-
grams for kindergartners ages four to five, summer clubs for ages six to nine as well as a summer break program for ages four to 12. The programs are usually conveniently close to home in neighbourhood schools throughout the GTA. Kindergartners learn from registered early childhood educators through fun activities, both indoor and outdoor. The learning activities build upon the Ontario Kindergarten curriculum. The summer clubs are a great opportunity for kids to learn new skills, make new friends in the neighbourhood and have fun with sports, games, arts and crafts and field trips.
SHARE A NANNY If you want to use a nanny but don’t think you can afford it, consider sharing one with another family. Connect with a family in your neighbourhood and work out a schedule where the nanny and kids travels from one home to the another on different days of the week. This is a great way for your child to spend the summer with their neighbourhood friends, in familiar surrounds. With only a few children being watched at the same time, sharing a nanny provides more personalized care for your baby, toddler or school aged child and a great way to stay social with friends at an affordable price.

Staying safe at fairs and festivals Carnivals, county fairs and street festivals can make for fun family outings. The nice weather just beckons people outdoors, and weekend after weekend resourceful carnival goers can probably find a fair nearby. But revelers need to make sure their experiences are as safe as they are fun. As a result, parents taking their kids along to enjoy this wholesome fun should consider the following precautions. Be prepared. Research the fair or carnival and know what to expect when you arrive. How big is it? What are the types of attractions and what vendors will be included? What is the parking situation? Are strollers allowed? Knowing what to expect can make the occasion a little less stressful. If your child is old enough to under-
stand, explain what the fair entails and how it can be crowded and noisy. Identify security guards or a security kiosk upon entering. Let children know where safety personnel are stationed. Establish a meet-up point that is very conspicuous should anyone get separated from the group. This central location will be checked first and should be easily identifiable for young children. Instruct the child to stay there until you find him or her. Put your mobile phone number in your child’s pocket. Put your name or “Mom/Dad” on a sheet of paper with a contact number and put it in your son or daughter’s pocket. Should he or she get lost, the child can approach a security guard and give that person your
phone number. Take a current photo of the kids. Use your smartphone or camera to snap a picture of your children when you arrive at the event. This way you will have a method of helping others identify them should they get lost. Observe the rides in advance. Watch rides before you get in line to try them out. Figure out if it is appropriate for a child and acclimate
anyone who is nervous. Carnival rides often have a “you must be this tall to ride” sign at their entrance gates. Look for inspection stickers. Carnival rides often have to be inspected for safety. If the ride doesn’t have a current inspection sticker, don’t ride it. – MS

Plants and animals in our wildflower preserve are just some of the things that inspire crafts and activities. Use clay, paints and paper mache to create art and works inspired by the homes and habitats of the birds, bugs and animals in the Don Valley.
