Growing a group Finding - or creating! - your ideal mommy group in T.O. Any mom will tell you that, while the first few weeks as a new parent are endlessly eventful, sometimes scary, and often a juggling act, once you and your wee one get established into a routine, things can quiet down quickly. Almost too quickly and quietly for some. One of the best ways to keep you and your babies from the trap of new parent isolation is to discover strength in numbers through good old fashioned female bonding. The support and friendship that come with joining a group of like minded parents has a number of benefits beyond play dates. “As a first time mom it helps immensely to be a part of a group!,” says new mom and Toronto resident Rachel Doerksen. “With all the informa-

tion you read at 2a.m., conflicting views on parenting techniques, and so many ‘am I doing this right?’ moments, it’s reassuring to have a circle of moms going through similar experiences at the same time as you. Plus, they help get you up and out of the house on days when you need a little extra motivation.” Doerksen is not only a new parent, but relatively new to Toronto. Having grown up outside of Canada, she didn’t have the built-in support network of childhood friends in the area. She first turned to the internet so help finding like-minded moms nearby. She found a plethora of groups in the city, even ones tailored to specific activities, however, she also noticed that some charge for membership and activities. After exploring her options, Doerksen decided

to opt for a do-it-yourself approach, and started contacting other moms from her prenatal class. “I gathering everyone’s email from my pre-natal class and reconnected a few months later. It’s a connection I feel really fortunate to have,” she says. “Creating my own group was the easiest option because it was a group I was already familiar with, and all of our babies were born within a month from one another.” Their newly created moms group has planned a

number of outings, including a group trip to Ripley’s Aquarium, where they discovered that jellyfish will keep wee ones entertained for hours. “Try to find a group you like with babes around the same age as your little one,” she adds. “It personally has helped me to actually see developmental milestones of babies the same age rather than just reading about them. “ – Nicole Larkin

Despite our unseasonably long winter, on Feb. 23 the city shut down all but 17 of 53 outdoor rinks on its normal annual schedule right before March Break. However, Canadian Tire and Scotiabank announced on Feb. 27 that they are putting up $250,000 to fund the continued operation of 11 rinks until after March break, weather permitting. “Enjoying a winter skate is part of life in Canada and one of the great Canadian family traditions,” says Susan O’Brien, Vice President, Canadian Tire. “Our We All Play for Canada program is about inspiring Canadians through the power of sport and active play, aiming to create healthier families and healthier communities. Girls rock the world! Though we’re still in the depths of what feels like the longest winter ever, and summer feels light years away, right now is the ideal time to start researching and booking summer camps and programming for your kids. Toronto is full of unique and interesting camps that offer cosmopolitan kids the culture they crave. Toronto Kids & Families will be profiling some of the most popular and inventive camps over the next several issues, starting with the Girls Rock Toronto camp, held annually in the city’s Annex neighbourhood. Girls Rock Toronto offers girls and young women aged 8-16 of all musical abilities and economic backgrounds a safe space to learn an instrument of their choice, while providing strong female mentors and role models, and tools to develop life skills and confidence. The camp is held at a real live venue, the Tranzac on Brunswick Ave., giving

all campers a true on stage experience. Professional musicians act as band coaches and instrument instructors. Fundamental music theory, improvisation, and performance are developed along with communication, patience, empathy and negotiation skills. Campers in each session form a band, write or learn a song, build music skills and perform at a showcase concert at the end of the week for family, friends and screaming fans. They also create logos and merchandise, and have a band photo shoot! It’s a great way to meet new friends, try out an instrument, play in a band, and show off skills! Kids on a plane! BY TORONTO4KIDS.COM As any parent will tell you, travelling with children is never boring. To help prepare you for your March Break travels, we’ve put together a few tips to keep you, your children and the rest of your travelling companions happy and calm. • Pack a Carry-on Bag for Each Child: If your kids are old enough, get them each a rolling back pack, to carry whatever will keep them occupied and entertained on-board. • Plan for On-board Snacks: What you put in those carry-on bags depends upon each child’s age and preferences. Bring yummy snacks, which will undoubtedly be healthier choices than anything you can purchase at the airport. Pack extra (tetra-pack drinks too) for unexpected delays or if you get stuck on the tarmac. • In case of emergency: Stuﬀ happens. Kids can spill juice or food, or just get sick. Pack extra clothing stored in plastic zip-lock bags (to help with the soiled clothing). A pack of wipes always comes in

handy. • Plan for On-board Entertainment: Portable electronic items seem to be the most popular choice for on-board entertainment. Travel with your iPad, portable DVD player or hand-held games. Electronics are eﬀective if you use them wisely, and in moderation. And they are a must on long plane rides. Charge your gadgets ahead of time! • Plan a few surprises for when the kids get fidgety. Pull out a new DVD or video game, puzzle book or card game. Whatever will make them smile! • Prepare your children for air travel. Describe what will happen at the airport, the security screening process, the boarding process and the need to obey on-board seatbelt instructions. Explain the importance of respecting all passengers on board (noise, kicking seats, etc.) Teach your children about airplane etiquette. Practice at home, it you need to. Let them know they will discover many fascinating things. The plane, the clouds, etc. can be a great educational experience!

• Consider Seating Carefully. Sitting at the back ensures you won’t disturb other passengers if you need to get up for restroom breaks or if things get a little noisy. If that’s not possible, get seats towards the front of the plane, so you can make a quick exit upon landing. • Restroom breaks. Have the kids go to the washroom before boarding the plane.
