Happy Campers Choosing the right summer camps for your kids It can be difficult to envision warm summer days when the wind is blowing and the snow is falling. However, the winter months are a great time to explore summer camp options. In fact, many camps have strict enrollment timelines that require decisions to be made prior to spring. There are many benefits to summer camp. Camp enables children to stay engaged during the summer when there may be limited interaction with school friends. It also gives parents both a safe and viable daycare solution during the summer. According to the University of Waterloo’s The Canadian Summer Camp Research Project, while at camp children learn and grow with regard to social connections. Over 65 per cent of the children in the study showed positive change in this area, indicating a statistically significant growth over the time period studied. As well, 61 per cent of the campers in the study showed improved attitudes towards physical activity by the end of their camp session. Camp can also help teach and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles. Examination of the data focusing on environmental awareness and environmentally friendly behaviour has revealed that 52 per cent of the campers in the study showed positive change in this area. The highest rate of positive growth in the study was found in the area of emotional intelligence: 69 per cent of participating campers experienced positive development in this area.

Summer camp pulls together children from different neighborhoods, social classes and backgrounds, which can make it a good place to meet new people -- some of whom may become lifelong friends. Camps also provide a variety of activities that can challenge children to try new things that go beyond their comfort zones.

“Sixty-nine per cent of... campers experienced positive development in the area of emotional intelligence” Some children are very receptive to the idea of attending summer camp. Others need a little coaxing. But summer camp should never be forced on a child who does not want to go. In such instances, consider local daytime programs that may fill the void instead of programs that require being away from home. Once the decision for summer camp is made, there are some questions to answer. What are your finances like? Do you have a budget for summer camp? What size camp do you desire? Should the camp be co-ed or single sex? How far do you want your child to travel for sum-

mer camp? What are the options in your area? Are there any camps that have been recommended by friends or family members? What kinds of activities do your children enjoy? These types of questions will help you narrow down your options. Then you can visit and interview camps to find one that is the best fit. When visiting camps, go armed with a checklist of questions. Some of these can include: What is the philosophy of the camp? Can you explain a typical day? What types of activities and facilities are offered? What is the camper-to-counselor ratio? What is the camp's drug/alcohol policy? Does the camp have insurance and adequate security personnel?

What percentage of staff return each year? How are staff selected and trained? What kind of health care is provided? Can you tell me about the policy on phone calls and family visits? What do you do in the event of emergencies? There are many different camps available. Some offer a "little bit of everything." Others cater to academics, sports, specific hobbies or even religious preferences. Don't wait too long to research and sign up for camps because many fill up quite early or have an extensive waiting list. That is why choosing a camp should be part of a winter to-do list. – with files from MS, and University of Waterloo’s Canadian Summer Camp Research Project

St. Patrick’s Day for the kids! Everyone is a little Irish come St. Patrick’s Day, and children are no exception. While kids can’t indulge in some of the spirits-induced revelry that accompanies the festivities this holiday, there are many things little ones can do to have a good time on St. Patrick’s Day. • Toronto’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is among the biggest in the world. The Toronto St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 12:00 noon with the procession starting from Bloor and St. George (near old

U of T Varsity Stadium). The Parade will continue along Bloor Street down Yonge and finishes on Queen Street at Nathan Philips Square. Easy access to the parade route from the TTC Subway can be made at the St. George, Bloor & Yonge, Wellesley, College, Dundas and Queen stations. • Crafts: From paper four-leaf clovers to homemade leprechaun hats and belt buckles, children can get in the spirit by fashioning crafts that correspond

with the theme of the day. • Treasure hunt: Send little leprechauns in search of gold at the end of the rainbow. Like an Easter egg hunt, hide gold-wrapped chocolate coins around the house and set kids off to find the treasure. • Baking specialties: Invite the kids to help bake some delicious treats, such as cupcakes with green frosting or Irish soda bread. – with files from MS

Irish Toronto Toronto is home to one of the largest Irish diasporas in the world, with a rich history all its own. Did you know that: • 1851, the Irish-born population became the largest single ethnic group in the city. • From 1919 to 1927 Toronto’s National Hockey League team was called the Toronto St. Pats and had green and white uniforms. The St. Pats won the Stanley Cup in 1922. In 1927 new owner Conn Smythe renamed the team after a military unit from World War I, the Maple Leaf Regiment, and changed the team colours to blue and white. • The Canadian Coat of Arms, as established in 1921, includes three maple leaves on the shield. But at the bottom there are four other plants - lillies for France, roses for England, thistles for Scotland and shamrocks for Ireland.

springseason

Bring on SPRING! Involve your kids in the garden this year, from pre-spring prep to fall harvest

Involving your kids in the gardening process from start to finish is not only fun and educational, but can also help your little guys foster lifelong love for healthy eating. There are plenty ways for your little ones to green their thumbs and help you cultivate a family garden. Get your kids to organize your spring garden seeds and have them help prepare your garden. There is nothing that kids love more than to dig in the dirt so why not use those extra little hands to help you in the garden. Plus, gardens attract bugs, birds and butterflies – which

kids love! Give your kids their own corner of the yard to plan out cultivate their own gardens. Consider taking them to one of the gardening trade shows, like Canada Blooms this month (see events, page 8-9) and letting them pick out their own plants and seeds. If space is a concern, you can always satisfy their inner farmer by helping them put together a themed container garden of their very own. “You can grow any type of veggie or herb in containers. From artichokes, tomatoes, egg-

plants, even carrots can grow in containers. If you have small children give them each a container and let them plant their favourite things like their own pizza pot with tomatoes and

basil, “ says Niki Jabbour, Author of The Year Round Vegetable Gardener (2012 American Horticultural Society Book Award winner). – Nicole Larkin, with files from Jenn Romano

Lilah Petersiel

Tami and Eric were shocked to learn that their first child, Lilah, was born with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. During Tami’s pregnancy, a routine ultrasound revealed that Lilah had only one kidney. Upon her birth, Lilah was transferred to The Hospital for Sick Children, and was quickly diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and deadly cancer that develops in the adrenal glands, above the kidneys, and can spread to other organs. Lilah’s tumour and affected adrenal gland were surgically removed when she was only two weeks. But when Lilah was about three months old, a CT scan found the cancer spread to her liver. This time, the treatment was more severe for the infant. Lilah had two rounds of chemotherapy, a surgical resection of approximately one third of her liver, followed by two more rounds of chemotherapy. Lilah finished her treatment in

Dec. 2004 and since then has had a clean bill of health. She returns to SickKids annually for checkups and follow-up to study the long term impact of chemotherapy. In order to develop better cures for neuroblastoma, Lilah’s parents established an event to raise money for neuroblastoma research. To date, ‘Lilah’s Fund’ has raised more than $680,000 to support neuroblastoma research at SickKids. Lilah’s Fund has hosted many events over the past several years, most notably, “Sunday in the Park with Lilah” (a family fun day) and “Lil’ Monkey Jam” (a concert for the entire family). Lilah has also hosted several ECHOage parties already. Guests areinvitedtoanECHOagebirthday party online. Instead of bringing a wrapped and packaged present to the party, they RSVP and give a secure online contribution. Contributions are pooled together, half is sent to the parent hosting the

party and the birthday boy or girl chooses any gift or gifts they want. The other half is sent by ECHOage to the charity the birthday boy or girl has chosen to support. Lilah’s mom,Tami, thinks ECHOage parties are a great way to raise funds for SickKids and to teach Lilah about the importance of charity. Lilah is planning another ECHOage party this spring and, in addition to the iPod she hopes to receive, is planning to help cure childhood cancer through donations to Lilah’s Fund at SickKids. For more information, visit www.sickkidsfoundation.com or www. www.echoage.com/charities/sickkids.
