Keep kids active in

SUMMER

In many ways, today’s kids have busier schedules than any previous generation of youngsters. Many extracurricular activities, including sports, require a nearly year-round commitment, and the dual-income household has landed many kids in afterschool programs where kids tend to their schoolwork or engage in various activities that keep them from resting on their laurels. But those busy schedules get a lot less hectic when the school year ends. Once school is out, kids used to a full schedule might find themselves with lots of time on their hands. Though it’s good for kids to squeeze in some rest and relaxation during their summer break, it’s also important for kids to stay active so they don’t develop poor habits as the summer goes on. Day Camp: consider local programs that offer summer activities. Toronto Public Libraries, schools and childcare centers may have programs that run the length of summer and are considerably less expensive than more formal camps. A YMCA or even a swim club may also put together activities. Parents whose children attend afterschool sporting classes, such as karate or soccer, may find that the organizations offer a camp or summer program. Plan an active vacation: Summer is when many families go on vacation, so why not choose a vacation that involves the great outdoors? Ontario is full of wilderness, lakes, rivers and trails where you can embrace activities like snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, or other adventures that get you and your youngsters out exploring. Closer to home, the Toronto Islands offer a host of activities, including Centreville amusement park. Intrepid families can rent canoes at Queens Quay and skip the crowded ferry ride across - plus

they’ll have the added benefit of being able to explore the narrow channels between the islands. Teach kids to garden: Gardening might be seen as a peaceful and relaxing hobby, but it still requires a lot of elbow grease and hard work that pays physical dividends. A garden must be planted, hoed, weeded, and watered, and gardening gets kids out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. When growing a vegetable garden, kids might embrace the chance to be directly involved in the foods that will eventually end up on their dinner tables. Parents can embrace this as an opportunity to teach the value of eating locally-produced foods and the positive impact such behavior has on the environment. Go swimming: Few adults who work in offices haven’t looked out their windows on a sunny summer day and thought how nice it would be to be spending that afternoon making a few laps in a lake, at the beach or in a pool. Kids have the same daydreams during the summer, so take a day off every so often and take the kids for an afternoon of swimming. Swimming is a great activity that exercises the entire body, including the shoulders, back, legs, hips, and abdominals. In addition, swimming helps kids and adults alike maintain a healthy weight while also improving their cardiovascular health. Toronto has a great public pool system with locations in neighbourhoods across town. If you’re looking to escape the chlorine, Toronto’s beaches are some of the cleanest in North America. There are plenty of reasons to keep the kids off the couch this summer. Staying active as a family is a fun way to bond while staying healthy. – MS, with files from Nicole Larkin

Choosing good family dog breeds Although dogs and cats will continue to battle one another to hold the top spot as favorite pet, as a society we are pet-lovers regardless of whether those pets meow or bark. Statistics show that roughly 65 percent of North American families have a pet at home – and the numbers keep growing. Those who are looking to add a furry companion to the family and are leaning toward a dog may have questions as to whether there are certain breeds that are a better fit for family life with children in the home. Breed

alone does not dictate a dog's demeanor. Every dog is unique, and how a puppy spent its formative months can be just as influential on the dog's behavior as its breed. There are some breeds that are thought of as family dogs because they are patient, calm and not easily provoked. But no dog is perfect, and it often takes working together as a family to develop a sense of trust and a routine that is comfortable for all. Here is information on some of the more popular breeds of dog:

familyfun Labrador retriever: Labrador retrievers are one of the more popular dog breeds, especially among families. Although it is thought to be a placid dog, a Lab is a member of the working class of canines and will need to be well exercised so the dog behaves well. Otherwise, the dog may be too boisterous and mischievous inside the home.

Golden retriever: Golden retrievers are another type of retriever that are popular among families. They were originally bred to hunt and retrieve birds. They're often eager to learn and serve and can become a dedicated family member if well exercised.

Keeshond: This medium-sized breed is a fluffy ball of fur. Keeshonds learn tricks well and are easily trained. They love to play and can follow along in the antics of children quite well. Keeshonds will alert their owners to visitors but aren't overly protective of their surroundings.

Collie: Ever since "Lassie" warmed the hearts of viewers, collies have been viewed as loyal family dogs. Collies

were bred for working, but they will eagerly herd children as well as livestock. Collies are generally gentle but active.

Standard poodle: Although poodles may be viewed as "froo-froo" dogs thanks to their traditional grooming style and their stereotype of being a Parisian pet, poodles are also working dogs that are very intelligent and can be easily trained. Affectionate and patient, they often make great dogs for families.

Pug: This dog is generally affectionate, loveable and even-tempered. Pugs love being part of the family and can be playful companions. They also love to nap on your lap; just be prepared for a little snoring.

Staffordshire bull terrier: Despite the perception of these dogs as being "fighting dogs," historically they are loyal family dogs. When well trained and raised correctly, including

proper socialization, bull terriers are not typically aggressive. However, it is important to note that they are a dominant breed and do well in single-dog households. They may become dog-aggressive. Many dogs can become well-mannered members of a family. To increase the chances of getting a stable, balanced dog of good temperament, select one that comes from a quality breeder or a respected animal shelter and socialize the dog as early as possible. – MS

Gentle giants: Newfoundlands and Bernese Mountain Dogs are two larger breeds that tend to be docile, behaving like big teddy bears. These breeds are usually very stable and easily trained, but they may need a little encouragement to be active.

Cairn terrier: An active small breed, the Cairn is a tough little cookie. The dog will have the energy to keep up with children, but it may be better in homes with older children because of the Cairn's diminutive size and the risk of rough handling.

TORONTO KIDS - May 2013 | 11 CONSUMER FEATURE

A new skate of mind C.J. Skateboard Park & School, a not-for-profit corporation, has a core mission – to serve all kids in the community in a safe and fun learning environment. C.J.’s friendly staff, experienced instructors and trained coaches engage children in a supportive environment allowing them to progress at their own rate with lots of help along the way. Lesson programs and skateboard camps are offered year-round for all ages and skill levels, from the timid/shy beginner to fearless daredevils, all with the convenience of on-line registration (www. cjskateboardpark.com). The incredible thing about skateboarding is that almost anyone can do it. Skateboarding is an individual, not a team sport, so your kids are only competing against themselves, building self-confidence and self-esteem, just from learning a few tricks. Skateboarding teaches mental focus, math, geometry, physics, perseverance, creativity and physical fitness, which is why it’s no surprise that most kids who skateboard are also doing better in school. Building a healthy mind and body is rarely this much fun! At-risk youth and special needs children benefit especially and are welcomed with programs catering to ADHD, Asperger’s, Autism, Cancer, Deaf/Hearing Impaired, Down Syndrome, OCD, Learning Disabilities, or any challenge one might have. These programs allow kids to exercise and socialize, all while learning valuable life skills and gaining self-confidence.

summerfun

Are we there yet? Surviving the summer roadtrip Whether it’s your first road trip or an annual getaway, preparation is the key to a stress free journey. To help get you started, Toronto Kids & Families offers the following advice: Fun for All Ages: Pack a special travel bag full of favourite items such as games, books, toys and electronics. With plenty of activities on hand, time will fly by and help keep kids entertained for hours. Snack Attack: Be sure to pack an assortment of snacks to keep the kids from getting hungry between meals. Make the car ride memorable with special treats that they usually don’t get at home. Schedule Stops Along the Way: Make the road trip exciting and take advantage of sights along the way. Plan routine breaks so that they whole family can stretch and burn off some energy.

Family First: Keep the family entertained on a budget by choosing a hotel with kid-friendly amenities like an indoor pool and waterslide. There are a number of hotel chains that allow kids 12 and under to stay for free when sharing a room with a parent or guardian. Plan Ahead: Get the kids involved in the planning process to help create excitement. Research your destination and remember to book hotel reservations well in advance. Look for national hotel chains that cater to families and offer loyalty rewards programs. Be Prepared: Always carry an emergency kit and keep it well stocked with the basics like first-aid supplies, extra water, blankets, flares and a flashlight. – News Canada
