Steeped in tradition This month, when remembering the brave veterans who have served our country in the past, take a moment to reflect on who will be their future. Thousands of youth across Canada currently participate in the Cadet Program, the largest federallysponsored youth program in Canada that includes the Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets. It is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Forces. Cadets are encouraged to become active, responsible members of their communities. They make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environ-

mental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship. Royal Canadian Sea Cadets learn about the naval and maritime environment by participating in a variety of activities on and off the water. Sea Cadets specialize in sailing, seamanship, shipboard life, naval communications, power boat handling, boat repair, and marine engineering. Selected senior cadets have the opportunity to attend international exchanges, to sail aboard a Tall Ship or participate in ship deployments aboard Canadian Navy and Coast Guard ships. The Royal Canadian Army Cadets appeal to teenagers craving exciting outdoor activities. Army cadets develop abilities in the use of map and compass, GPS technology, orienteering, first-aid, camping and survival skills, canoeing, abseiling, trekking, mountain biking, etc. As they get more experienced, some will be selected for parachuting, white-water rafting and glacier climbing. They will also learn to become outdoor leaders. Royal Canadian Air Cadets participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities. The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills for flight crew. The athlete will appreciate physical education and recreation, including a variety of sporting activities like biathlon and Olympic-style marksmanship. The artists will find their niche in the music program. The curious will appreciate the hands-on activities such as building model aircraft. The scholarly will appreciate an introduction to the various tools and technologies linked to aviation. The dreamers will appreciate the evolution of technology and the advancements of the aerospace era, including the importance of Canadian participation.

Select top senior cadets may even earn the chance to represent Canada on the world stage by participating in an international exchange. Most importantly, Air Cadets aids in developing knowledge of Canadian history and democracy. The

program focuses on social development, decisionmaking and leadership. As cadets acquire skills and knowledge, they pass it along to younger cadets. For more information on the Canadian Cadet Program, visit www.cadets.ca.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town! Kids all across the city are gearing up to see the 108th annual Santa Claus Parade in Toronto. The 2012 Santa Claus Parade will be held on Sunday, November 18 from 12pm to 4pm. With hundreds of thousands of spectators in attendance, plan ahead to make the most of the experience! Arrive a few hours before the event if you want a spot in the front row. Scout out your parking ahead of time. Remember, there is no parking along the parade route but you can find parking nearby, however, due to the numbers expected, it’s a good idea to consider taking the TTC. Find a spot along the route that will enable you to see the floats coming towards to rather than have the floats just pass in front of you. Locate a spot near a coffee shop or restaurant

so you can get hot drinks and have bathroom breaks. There are 20+ Tim Hortons, McDonalds and Pizza Pizza locations along the parade route. There are also a host of coffee shops and cafes along Bloor Street that can offer a warmer, and perhaps less crowded parade-watching atmosphere. But if this is the route you’re going to take, make sure to arrive extra early to stake out a table - they’ll go fast! Dress your kids warmly. The temperature can change dramatically and even if the forecast isn’t calling for cold weather, bundle them up well. Wear layers so you can peel off extra clothing. Hats (ear muffs) and mitts are a must. Bring your letters to Santa. Santa’s postal elves will be there to collect them. Be sure to address letters to Santa Claus, North Pole, HOH OHO, Canada, and include your

return address. After the parade, consider hanging around downtown for awhile. That way, you won’t have to fight the crowds and the traffic to get home. What to bring: • Camera, video and extra batteries • Light Folding chairs • Snacks such as granola bars, juice boxes • Hot cocoa in a thermos • Sleeping bags and blankets • Exact change for purchases and TTC fares And if you can’t make it to the parade, tune in to CP24 for the exclusive live broadcast on Sunday, November 18. November is Child Safety and Protection Month, and one of the growing concerns among parents is their children’s safety on the internet. But where the concerns of the early 2000’s centred around online predators, parents and kids these days are growing all too familiar with the prevailing type of internet risk - the cyber bully. While many of us may remember bullying, or being bullied in school, most will agree that today’s kids have it harder than any previous generation, because the abuse follows them home from the playground and literally permeates every aspect of their social lives - which are increasingly lived out on the internet. The schoolyard has become the facebook wall. For months, stories of bullied children displaying self-harming behaviour, and too often, even suicide, have dominated headlines across the nation. Just last month, the sad story of 15-year old Amanda Todd captured the collective hearts of Canadians and people across the globe. Part of the reason online bullying is so ubiquitous is that the internet grants a veil of anonymity to tormentors. Where in the past, bullies would come face-to-face with their targets, today even shy kids can become outspoken and insulting from behind the cloak of the internet. Parents worried about their kids online well-being should take concrete steps to prevent these problems before they start. It’s a good idea to keep the com-

puter in a common area of the home, and not in your child’s bedroom where you can’t monitor their online activity. While your child may complain about the lack of privacy or intrusiveness on your part - it’s worth it in the long run to keep them safe from the emotional scars that can come with cyber-bullying, not to mention the permanent virtual record of their torment. While Facebook is a great place for your kids to talk to friends and family, it can also be place where bullies lurk. While facebook’s terms of service dictate that users must be 13 years of age to activate an account, in reality this policy is rarely enforced - you may have to put your foot down and do the enforcing yourself. If your child is over 13, encourage them to give you full access to their various online presences. Teach them to never place personal information on Facebook, and make sure your kids are creating their Facebook page as private. Show them how to set their account to the maximum privacy settings possible. Make sure your kids are posting appropriate photos on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitters and other networks, again with privacy settings to prevent other people from gaining access to these pictures.
