schoolsession
A green back-to-school September is here! This means back to school for thousands of kids! There is certainly a lot of organization and preparation that goes on at this time of year, so we’ve given you five ways to green your back to school routine and head back to class in an eco-friendly way. You’ll save some energy and money while making our world a better place to live in!
REUSE Re-use your backpack and lunch box from last year. There’s no need to spend money on new items and create waste when your existing ones still have use. Same with supplies. Go through your school bags from last year and re-use everything you can. When buying, go for recycled paper products (notebooks, printer paper, agendas) whenever possible. Earth friendly pens and pencils are also getting easier to find.
GO PAPERLESS Get on an email list. Ask your school to email newsletters. Get parents to volunteer to create the email list if the school has not already done so. You get enough paper from the school as it is! This would save the school time, effort and money.
GREEN YOUR TRANSPORTATION.
If you live close to school consider walking or riding bicycles to minimize on driving.
Getting out in the fresh air is a great way to wake up little brains and get the blood pumping before classes start. Review safety rules beforehand, including a planned route and using bicycle helmets. For those that live further away, taking the school bus is greener than individual driving.
PACK A LITTER-LESS LUNCH!
There are tons of options to choose from these days which help cut down on the use of plastic wraps and baggies, tetra juice boxes and plastic utensils. Make sure everything in the lunchbox is re-usable and does not need to be thrown out.
BE A WATCHFUL CONSUMER.
Yes it’s tempting to run out now and buy all your back to school clothes and gear but consider purchases before you make them and think about waiting a few weeks to see what items are really needed. Before the end of September, retailers will put clothing and other items on sale to make room for all the winter stuff and that means sales and big savings for you! Save time, money and the environment – and maybe even learn a lesson about conservation and economics before the school bell rings! For more Back-to-School tips, visit www. toronto4kids.com. – Toronto4Kids.com

Hit the BOOKS!
After a summer of outdoor fun, the biggest challenge of the back to school season can be re-aquianting your little ones with books instead of balls. One of the best ways to foster a lifelong love of reading is to make the activity a fun one instead of a chore they feel obligated to do. What better way then spending the day surrounded by the magic of words at Toronto’s annual Word on the Street festival. Running this year at Queen’s Park on September 23, The Word On The Street festival believes in promoting and encouraging literacy and a love of reading from the youngest possible age. This is why, every year, The Word On The Street hosts KidStreet – a festival-within-a festival featuring a fantastic blend of children’s author programming and family-friendly activities that add up to great family fun! In 2012, KidStreet offers three exciting venues: the Children’s Reading Tent, the Children’s Activity Tent and the TVOKids Stage. At the Children’s Reading Tent, there will be many great authors to discover, including Tim Beiser, Rebecca Bender, Cary Fagan, Andrew Larsen, Kyo Maclear, Dave Whamond and Cybèle Young. At the Children’s Activity Tent, join renowned poet Dennis Lee to celebrate his classic Canadian Children’s book at the Alligator Pie Party! More fun activities in-
clude decorating your own felt puppets and hats with J. Lum and J. Torres; testing your knowledge about the human body with Liza Fromer and Dr. Francine Gerstein in their fast-paced Body Works Quiz; participating with author Lizann Flatt and illustrator Ashley Barron in a hands-on collage activity; sharpening your pencils for a fun-filled drawing activity guided by illustrator Debbie Ridpath Ohi; learning the art of Origami with the Brothers Leung; and moving and grooving to Andrew “Too Tall” Queen’s folk music and silly sing-a-long performance! At the TVOKids Stage children will be thrilled to meet their favourite TVOKids personalities as they share in a jam-packed day of literacy-focused entertainment that includes music, stories, readings and interactive sessions. Dance along and don’t forget to keep an eye out for Polkaroo! Families can pick up a KidStreet Festival Guide at any of The Word On The Street’s five Information booths for more details about KidStreet programming. The WEBview, digital edition of the Guide will be available on The Word On The Street’s website in September. Visit KidStreet’s Marketplace filled with amazing books, publishers and authors waiting to be discovered, all geared towards children. For more info, visit www.thewordonthestreet.ca/wots/toronto.

Toronto Farmers’ Markets AppleTree Market
A City Harvest Fall is the perfect time to enjoy a farmer’s market and to feast on fall’s best flavours. So don't delay, grab the kids and head out to the market to bring autumn’s beautiful colours indoors and onto your dinner plate! This is a time for kids to learn food can be fun and to find out how and where their food is grown. They can meet farmers face to face, ask questions, and taste some of the great foods grown right here in Ontario. Here are some tips to make it a fun and educational outing with your kids: • Visit the market’s website before heading out. Find out if there will special activities or children’s performers. There may even be kids’ cooking classes offered, or special seasonal events. • Give the kids their own spending money and the responsibility to select what they can afford. They may want to buy a treat at the bakery or find a
locally-made craft souvenir on a vendor’s table. • Teach your kids about choosing the freshest of vegetables and fruit. • Give the kids a shopping tote. They will love toting around some of the purchases. • Involve your kids in weighing, counting and paying for purchases. These activities build math skills. • Let them choose lunch from the food vendors. You’ll find all kinds of delicious fare which will be a very different (and healthier) than the food court at the mall. Give them the opportunity to taste something new. • Make it a game to find the most unusual fruit or vegetable. What will the kids spot? Purple potatoes? Orange cauliflowers? Yellow tomatoes? • Once you’ve picked out your produce and have headed home for the day, keep the kids involved by creating a fresh meal using products you pur-
