James Ehnes, violin

This season’s final programme in The Decades Project brings you the earth-shaking sounds of Stravinsky’s evocation of prehistoric life, The Rite of Spring, which had provoked a riot at its world première in Paris in 1913. In the hands of sovereign violinist James Ehnes, the nobility and poetry of Sir Edward Elgar’s expansive concerto of 1910 glows more brightly than ever.

Frequently Asked Questions When should I arrive? Plan to arrive 45 minutes before the scheduled start time so you can find your seat, absorb your surroundings, and have time to glance through the programme book. When coming to a concert, please remember that traffic, parking, and weather can affect your arrival time at the hall. In the interests of all patrons and performers, latecomers will only be seated if and when there is a suitable break in the performance. The “late call” is a break in the concert determined by the conductor and guest artists. Patrons who leave the auditorium during a performance will be re-admitted at a suitable break in the performance. Patrons in Roy Thomson Hall can hear the concert via speakers in the lobby while they are waiting to be admitted, or watch the video monitors installed on each level of the hall. Call Patron Services at 416.598.3375 for updates on late seating 48 hours prior to your concert. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra assumes no responsibility for any portions of any concert missed due to lateness; we regret that we cannot make any adjustments to the ticket price or offer other types of compensation. May I bring my children? Children 5 years of age and older may attend any TSO concert with ticket purchase. However, we recommend children be 10 years of age or older for Masterworks, Casual, and Special Performances. The TSO offers Young People’s Concerts and a Family Christmas Concert (A Christmas Circus) especially for audience members ages 5 to 12. While children ages 2 to 5 are welcome to attend these concerts, 5 years is considered an appropriate lower age limit. Children 2 to 5 may attend these concerts with ticket purchase, at their parents’ discretion. We regret we cannot allow children under 2 years of age into any TSO concert. Roy Thomson Hall staff will ask parents to take disruptive children out of the auditorium. Please note that young people under the age of 12 will not be admitted into the hall without an adult in attendance. What should I wear? Anything that makes you feel comfortable! Most people wear dressy casual clothes, but you’ll see everything from jeans to cocktail dresses. Whatever outfit you choose, please refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes, or other scented products, as some patrons may be allergic and/or have multiple chemical sensitivities. What if I need to cough? Everyone gets the urge to cough now and then, but be prepared: if you are recovering from a cold, take some cough medicine in advance and bring unwrapped candy or lozenges with you. No matter how quiet you try to be, unwrapping candy or lozenges is always heard! Try to bury your cough in a loud passage of music. If this is impossible and you begin to cough, then it is perfectly acceptable and preferable to quietly exit the concert hall. The ushers will tell you when you are able to re-enter the concert.

68

Is it time to clap yet? Modern audiences tend to wait until the end of an entire piece to clap. Why? Holding applause between movements is considered to be respectful to the performers’ concentration and mindful of musical continuity. When the conductor puts his or her arms down and turns to face the audience, we welcome you to clap, cheer, and yell “Bravo!” What else do I need to know? For your enjoyment, and the enjoyment of people around you, please remember concert etiquette: talking, humming, tapping to the music, turning pages, leaning forward in your seat, standing, or unwrapping candies may disturb the performers as well as other audience members.

Please be sure to turn off your cell phones, watch alarms, and all other audible electronic devices before the concert begins. Flash photography and recording devices are not permitted in the hall. But please feel free to share your non-flash photos on TSO social media channels:
