Forget jewelry, cars, clothes, the latest gadgets and bags of money. There are few things more valuable than sharing wonderful experiences that lead to lifetime memories. I was extraordinarily lucky to have inherited a wonderful gift from my mother – her love of travel and new experiences. She nudged me out of the nest to experience the excitement life has to offer. With travel, the world seems bigger, yet smaller and awe-inspiring, yet familiar. When I was a kid, she and my Dad traveled to exotic places, setting the foundation for their 58 years of marriage. I was thrilled that later in life, Mom and I were having our own adventures! I was incredibly lucky to have shared several motherdaughter trips with her – to China, Sicily and Ireland. We learned about each other as adults – our interests, travel styles, comfort levels, flexibility – and bonded over breathtaking views, charming villages, ancient ruins, local (and sometimes mysterious) cuisines, jaunty rickshaw rides, choppy boat rides and Irish lullabies. These trips were the inspiration for our Mother-Daughter trips feature. I am dedicating this issue to my mother who passed away just before we went to print. She didn’t have a chance to see this dedication, but her passing makes these memories all the more important to share and encourage others to share their legacy of travel with their family and friends. Call your Ensemble Travel® Group consultant and create those memories. Valuable time with family is truly priceless and forever. Pass on the legacy of travel,

An

Insider’s GUIDE to Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island The Hawaiian Islands welcome you with experiences ranging from

lush waterfalls and quaint towns to big wave surfing and active volcanoes. Discover incredible insider adventures on two of the six Hawaiian Islands – Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island.

Kaua‘i

Hawai‘i Island

Two roads lead to Kaua‘i’s Waimea Canyon. Picnic along the rim and watch the canyon’s radiant colors change as fluffy white clouds drift over its crested buttes, rugged crags, and deep valley gorges. And here’s a tip – you can see the canyon from every angle if you take one road up and the other down.

Taking a lava boat tour at sunrise along the east side of Hawai‘i Island is unlike any fireworks display you’ve ever seen. If your timing is right, you can see fiery lava flowing into the ocean and witness black sand beaches being formed right before your eyes. Ask a crew member to scoop some water from the sea so you can feel how it’s heated by the lava.

Most people are aware of Kaua‘i’s famed Napali Coast, but make sure you see it from the sea. The coastline is a 17-mile miracle of emerald cliffs, narrow valleys, and wild waterfalls. Boat tours and kayaks offer unrivaled views, although you can also hike the rugged terrain or witness it all by helicopter (a unique and unforgettable way to watch the sunset).

Get a taste of Hawai‘i Island when you tour one of its many coffee plantations. A good place to start is just above Kailua-Kona, in the area known as the Coffee Belt, where roadside kiosks in the mountain village of Holualoa offer a wide variety of tasting options.

For special offers, please see page 70. To plan your trip to the Hawaiian Islands, please contact your Ensemble Travel® Group consultant.

Activities range from snorkeling with sea lions ... to biking, hiking, and kayaking ... to cultural exchanges with Buddhist monks and intimate visits with local artists.

European Christmas Markets & Africa

Inspired by Ensemble LifestylesTM, our readers have been traveling the globe and sharing their experiences with us …

Kathy and Jerry discovered the joys of river cruising on a Christmas Markets river cruise. After reading “The Lure of European Christmas Markets” in our Winter issue, Barbara and Ron decided to go on a Christmas Markets trip of their own.

Dear Editor, There is nothing like the European Christmas Markets! My husband and I love history, architecture, art, culture and of course Christmas. We collect ornaments from all of our travels, so we knew a Viking River Christmas Markets cruise to Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary would be perfect for us. Shopping for one-of-a-kind items, seeing the beautiful Christmas lights at night, the food, the glühwein (mulled wine), meeting new people and finding that perfect ornament in a tiny one-man glass shop in Passau made our trip even more unforgettable. We loved our trip so much that we came home and called our travel agent to book two more cruises. We just returned from a three week cruise through Europe, where we visited the tiny glass shop in Passau. The owner remembered us and presented a gift to my husband – a Bavarian beer stein! ~ Barbara O.

Dear Editor, My husband, Jerry, had been stationed in Heidelberg, Germany during his stint in the U.S. Army more than 40 years ago. We had wanted to go back and visit, and we were also interested in trying a river cruise, and thought the Christmas Markets cruise to the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland would be fun. We have been on several ocean cruises, but found that river cruising, with a smaller number of passengers, to be more conducive to meeting new people. Jerry enjoyed seeing Heidelberg again and was surprised that the old town had not changed very much. We also really enjoyed the Christmas markets (which are popular with the locals – it’s definitely not just a tourist attraction) and seeing all of the holiday decorations in the towns, and trying the glühwein and local beers and ales. ~ Kathy H.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! We invite you to share your travel stories with us. RSVP to: editor@ensembletravel.com Please see pages 75, 79 & 80 for our pick of river cruises to Europe, and pages 69 & 71 for our pick of safari trips, or contact your Ensemble Travel® Group consultant. 6 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

Whether it be a destination featured in Ensemble Lifestyles or another fabulous locale, we’d love to hear where your travels have taken you.

while in Africa ... Inspired by “African Adventures” in our Winter issue, Justin embarked on a Kenya adventure of his own.

Dear Editor, A photo safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve was the natural highlight of my four months in Kenya. As I first drove into the reserve with our guide, I still remember thinking that the Rangers must have left snacks in the tall grasses at the entrance to attract such impressive crowds of zebra and wildebeest. The landscapes were indescribably beautiful, the animals wild and natural, and the experience of sharing an open space with lions, giraffes, and elephants was unforgettable. Another highlight from my trip was climbing Mount Kenya. Our group of six summated the third highest peak of the Mountain called Point Lenana, which is 16,354 feet. (Fortunately we had two porters and a cook with us)! It was fascinating to look down on puffy clouds, as if we were on a plane. ~ Justin V.

VISIT MADAGASCAR

G O Known for its wide-eyed lemurs, Madagascar is the world’s fourth-largest island, featuring seven of the world’s nine species of the baobab trees, and varied landscapes that range from mountainous highlands and terraced rice fields; to the rainforest of the Eastern slope; to the semi-arid savannah and the canyons of the south; and the idyllic and still wild beaches. S E E Madagascar is home to five percent of the world’s species, and boasts an astonishing diversity in flora and fauna. The enchanting lemurs are the island’s most celebrated residents:

There are dozens of species and subspecies found only here. W H E N Each season has something to offer, but the best time to visit Madagascar is probably September– November, after the cool, dry winter but before the hot rainy season. Winter (July-August) is the coolest time of year and peak whale watching season. September-December is great for bird watching; October-November brings mild weather and baby lemur season; late January-March is the rainiest time of year but peak season for reptiles and amphibians, and flowering orchids; and the rains lessen in April-May, leaving the countryside lush and green.

Extracting more meaningful experiences from your travels by challenging not just your familiar surroundings, but also your familiar palate.

After more than four years in development, ultra-luxurious Crystal Cruises has unveiled a life-enhancing, new, nightly dining experience in the main dining rooms aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. The innovative program features a fleet of highly trained chefs with a level of knowledge and experience that far surpasses the norm, masterfully redesigned kitchens ... and more than one hundred new dishes, each showcasing modern epicurean artistry in an unexpected and delicious new way.

Toni Neumeister, Vice President of Food & Beverage Operations, shares some of the incredible techniques behind these extraordinary new dishes.

The new menus

“Our chefs are now among the most elite and rare culinary artists around the world who have this level of food knowledge and experience – and no one in the world is doing it for 900 guests a night, 365 nights a year.”

are as varied and exciting as Crystal’s extraordinary cruise itineraries ... they are rich in contrasts: Hot and cold. Soft and crunchy. Solid and airy.

White Chocolate Passion Fruit Délice & Strawberry Snow TECHNIQUE: Snowing – using strawberry flavored white chocolate and Maltotextine (made of tapioca flour)

Crystal’s chefs are now among the world’s most elite and rare culinary artists. Spain’s world-renowned El Bulli and the United Kingdom’s Fat Duck were the inspiration behind Crystal Cruises’ culinary makeover. To ensure a complete and authentic transformation, former Fat Duck chef Kyle Connaughton and technical expert Gerard Bertholon were brought in to assist. And Crystal’s chefs spent months mastering hightech cooking techniques such as precision temperature cooking, spherification, ice filtration, and hydrocolloid stabilization. Fancy words for skills that allow them to transform raspberries into ribbons, lemons into sugary snow crystals, spinach and beet root into caviar-like spheres, and lobster essence into a light, airy foam – all while preserving the flavors and textures that make the ingredients so tantalizing. Fine examples of putting the “art” back in culinary arts, the new menus are as varied and exciting as Crystal’s extraordinary cruise itineraries. From light and playful appetizers to deeply meaningful desserts, they are rich in contrasts: Hot and cold. Soft and crunchy.

Solid and airy. Each an avant-garde masterpiece that wows as much in presentation as it does in the mouth. All designed to deliver cutting-edge culinary experiences that are rare, refined, and beyond memorable. And all complimentary. The “Modern” menu, for those interested in a professionally designed gastronomic journey, is a tasteful and engaging five-course experience. The “Classic” menu features an array of choices for those who wish to craft their own culinary adventure. Both menus change daily and include vegetarian selections. Not to be outdone, the ships’ Executive Pastry Chefs also offer an extensive assortment of desserts.

A deep commitment to farmsourced, local ingredients brings the new menus to life. Crystal’s provision masters work closely with local vendors in each destination to obtain the highest quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, dairy, herbs, and spices. Menu items are carefully designed around the market availability of fresh ingredients in ports. All of this results in the most tender cuts of meat, the lightest of mousses, and the most satisfying and authentic local culinary experiences.

Trio of Oysters - Pickled Shallots, Cucumber Sherbet & Smoked Oyster TECHNIQUE: Smoking Gun – wood chips and seaweed

Scallops and Tuna Ceviche with White Miso Foam and Olive Oil Caviar TECHNIQUE: Spherification - shaving liquid (flavored olive oil) into small spheres, which look like caviar with the same texture and explode in your mouth

Mediterranean Sea Bass with Norwegian Crabmeat on Red Beet Couscous TECHNIQUE: Precise temperature cooking using an immersion circulator

RE AL PEO PLE REAL J O U RN E YS

Reindeer Herding in LA PLA N D I am sitting in a wood-burning sauna in Lapland, the northernmost part of Finland where, although it feels like 150 degrees Fahrenheit inside, outside it’s less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit – not surprising, as I am 186 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This most northern part of Europe is home to the Lapps (also known as the Sami) – indigenous people who have lived here since the Ice Age. Once, the Sami made their living by hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding. Now, there are only 700 reindeer herders left, but Lapland is still all about reindeer: as an industry, for food, clothing, and even the names of drinks. Last night I tried “Tear of the Reindeer” (Cointreau and vodka). by MARGIE GOLDSMITH

Our travel agent has arranged for an Englishspeaking Finnish guide and van to transport our group of six along the snow-covered roads. Yesterday, we went to a reindeer farm and I hopped into a sledge (the Finnish word for sled), pulled by a tame reindeer named Rudolph. Most reindeer are not tame, have no names, and live in the forest in herds. They eat lichen and mushrooms, though reindeer herders deliver hay to supplement their winter diet. Every part of the reindeer has a use: meat for eating, skin for clothing and blankets, head for dog food, hooves for boots, and antlers for handicrafts. The herders also grind the antlers into a powder that the Japanese buy as Viagra, though the Sami reindeer farmer admits it has no powers. The reindeer sledge ride feels childish and I can’t wait for the real deal: to shadow an authentic reindeer herder through the forest. Lucky for me, at my request, the guide and my travel agent have arranged it – something truly special. After breakfast, the group leaves to go snowmobiling and dog sledding. Kirsten Mattus, the reindeer herder’s wife,

picks me up and drives me to her house where I meet her husband Petri, a 36-year-old Sami reindeer herder who runs reindeer tours into the forest. He outfits all his clients in an insulated snowsuit, snuggly mittens, and warm boots.

Petri drives out three times a week to feed the reindeer by snowmobile, pulling a sledge for both passengers and a bale of hay. We ride into the silent forest beneath a canopy of snow-blanketed branches, past snowdrifts the size of igloos and fox tracks in the snow.

the specialty; I’ve tried it in stew, as a steak, and as sausage. It’s succulent, a cross between tenderloin and lamb. After about ten miles, we stop at a clearing. Petri unloads a bale of hay from the sledge, spreads it on the snow-packed ground, and calls out, “Oyyyyyaiiii — oyyyyy — aiii.” After a few minutes, there’s a clicking sound as small groups of reindeer trickle towards us. Reindeer have two extra bones in their foot that click so they can hear each other in the dark and know it’s not a predator. More reindeer approach. I’d like to ask how many reindeer he owns, but that’s considered rude, like asking how much money one has in the bank. I count over 100. Petri splits a log, makes a fire in the snow, slices some fresh reindeer meat from a bag and cooks it in an iron skillet. Lapland food includes freshwater salmon, arctic char, and trout, but reindeer is 14 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

Petri’s father was a reindeer hunter and from the time he was little, Petri never thought of anything else. His first word was kelka (snowmobile), and he helped his father herd from the age of 10. His favorite moment is when he sees a newborn. “First, they find their mother’s milk, then, after a few hours, they learn to walk,” he says. “After the first day they can run so fast, you can’t keep up with them.” Back at his farm, he puts a reindeer skull on the ground and throws the rope into a perfect arc, lassoing the skull. “Now you know how I caught my wife,” he laughs, “though it’s much harder to catch a running reindeer.” A few hours later, I am outfitted in another warm snowsuit, boots and helmet and follow the snowmobile instructor onto the frozen lake to reunite with my group. Half are dogsledding

and half are snowmobiling, so I trade my snowmobile for a dogsled and race across the frozen ice, pulled by the joyous dogs. It’s almost as good as being out with Petri. “I am so jealous,” says Marco, my traveling companion, as we sit in the steamy sauna and I tell them about my forest adventure. “So now, you pay!” He pulls me out of the sauna down the snowy path to the lake where there’s a hole in the frozen ice. “Do it fast,” he says. I race down the ladder, submerge myself in the freezing water to my neck, then, climb up and run back into the hot sauna where Marco hands me a beer. “You’ve earned it,” he grins. Later, we all pile inside our guide’s snuggly ice igloo and stare up through the glass at the blackness. And then, as if on cue, a colossal green genie dances across the entire expanse of the sky, swirling into exotic patterns and changing into neon colors of violet and orange and yellow – one of the greatest of nature’s productions: the northern lights. b

The Northern Lights

Petri feeding the reindeer

I trade my snowmobile for a dogsled and race across the frozen ice, pulled by the joyous dogs. It’s almost as good as being out with Petri.

The bright lights that seem to dance across the sky are caused by collisions of electrically charged particles from the sun, which enter the earth’s atmosphere. The lights can be seen above the magnetic poles of both the northern and southern hemispheres. In the north they are called the Aurora borealis and in the south, Aurora australis. The lights can appear in many colors such as red, yellow, blue and violet, but the most common are green and pink. The type of gas particles colliding causes the variations in color. The lights appear in many different forms – they can look like a balloon about to explode or streamers dancing in the wind, arcs, rippling waves or shooting rays. Cloud cover will obscure the lights, and there is no guarantee of seeing them. In Finnish Lapland, only three nights out of ten are usually clear. If you plan to view the Northern Lights outdoors (and not in the comfort of a heated all-glass igloo) dress very warmly: hat, gloves, lined boots, long underwear, fleece, down jacket, waterproof layer, and hand and feet warmers for those who get cold quickly. To Get There: Your travel agent can arrange your flight from the USA to Helsinki and then a short flight to Ivalo in the north. When To Go: March is a good time to view the Northern Lights, with bright blue skies and snow. Spring is muddy and early summer brings mosquitoes. August is ideal, as is autumn for the foliage.

TOU RI N G

My bike trip through Denmark started, oddly enough, in Germany. I’d flown into Berlin, and needed to board a train to meet my friend, Gary Schwartz, in Hamburg. But the stout, stern conductor refused to allow my bike on the train. “Nein!” he barked, pointing to my bike. Just before the train pulled out another conductor allowed me to board. I met Gary in Hamburg and we began peddling toward the Danish border. Our first destination in Denmark was a hostel, but after riding all day we found it closed for renovations. So we kept cycling into the evening (it didn’t get dark until late) and had a glorious vision: a sign of a bed hanging outside a home. This was a kro, a home that had a room for rent. An elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Nissen, welcomed us with a hearty dinner of fresh fish with homemade brown bread, even though we didn’t have any Danish money. They accepted the last of our German marks and offered us a couple of bottles of beer – on the house. Welcome to Denmark. That was the beginning of a two-week trip across the country’s three major regions: the western peninsula of Jutland, the central island of Funen, where Hans Christian Andersen lived and wrote; and the eastern region of Zealand, where Copenhagen is located. We rode west to east because winds were westerly, and we had bikes laden with sleeping

bags and gear. But biking Denmark doesn’t have to be an expedition. Several companies offer fully supported bike tours and the country’s bike shops will rent all the gear needed for a day or week on a bike. Eastern Denmark is sparsely populated – the country has only 5.6 million people and about 2 million are in Copenhagen – so even when we weren’t on designated bike routes we often had

the road to ourselves. Passing farm after orchard, we often saw roadside honor boxes selling fruit, honey and eggs. Just take what you want and leave the money in the box. After a long ride through the heart of Jutland, we arrived in Billund, home to the original Legoland – the snap-together bricks were invented in Denmark. Crossing a bridge from Jutland to Funen two days later, we laughed like schoolkids when we arrived in Middelfart, and took a photo by the sign with the town’s name. When the weather turned rainy a couple of days later, we sought shelter in a restaurant and met a middle aged man seated with a striking young blonde woman less than half his age. When he saw we were foreigners cycling through his country he invited us to his home for dinner. Then he introduced us to his daughter. “The thing that made Denmark special was the Danish,” Gary recalled. “There was an attitude that made them fun to talk to.” Our tour concluded in Copenhagen, where we sometimes shared roads with drivers who yielded to us and the many other cyclists. On the summer solstice, we biked to a park to hear a Danish doo-wop band and celebrate Midsummer’s Eve. At midnight we rode to our home for the night, the sun’s last rays of the day shimmering on the western horizon. b

6 reasons why Denmark is a haven for cyclists 1

The country is built for biking: There are more than 7,000 miles of clearly posted cycling paths throughout the country, and cities have raised bike lanes. It’s like riding up on a curb built for bikes.

2

4

Trains and buses welcome bikes: If you want to cycle one area then hop on public transit, you’ll find special racks for your bike, but sometimes there’s a modest fee.

5

Denmark is virtually flat: The highest elevation is 170 meters (560 feet), a mere molehill compared to mountainous regions elsewhere.

Biking can be the best way to connect with people: A bicycle opens the way to stop wherever you like and meet the locals.

3

6

Bike-friendly culture: Just about everyone in Denmark rides for transportation and recreation, and bike shops are ubiquitous (except in remote rural areas). And locals love cyclists!

Spectacular scenery: See half-timbered homes built centuries ago, brilliant red and yellow boats bobbing in the harbor off the island of Aerø, and idyllic farmsteads fronted by windswept fields of golden grain.

MU SEU MS

Originally a residential home and private estate, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is today one of the world’s most soul and eye pleasing museums, truly in a class of its own. Many call Louisiana the world’s most beautiful museum. LOV E AT FI RST SIGH T

I N T U N E W I T H NAT U R E

The founder of the museum, Knud W. Jensen, was a renaissance man – an art lover, enthusiast and entrepreneur. One autumn day in 1954, Jensen, accompanied by his dog, climbed over the fence to an old abandoned garden by the coast, north of Copenhagen and found a place he immediately fell in love with – a forlorn white villa with a gardener’s lodge, stables, coach houses, a greenhouse, a lake, tennis courts, and a wilderness of fruit orchards and exotic hardwood trees.

Architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert were commissioned to convert the mansion into a museum, with the idea that art should be experienced unpretentiously in a homelike environment. The dream came true and the museum opened in 1958.

The villa, erected in 1855 by Master of the Royal Hunt Alexander Brun, was situated near an old privateer’s harbor with slipways and gun emplacements built in 1814 as a fortification against an enemy (the British) who never returned. Rather than becoming a harbor for the intended 100 gunboats, the estate became home to Brun, who married no less than three times, each time to a woman named Louise – a popular name at the time, presumably – hence the name of the mansion. A man of means, Jensen purchased the mansion and its parkland estate to create his museum. He decided to keep the “lovely name,” as he called it, “Louisiana.”

Over the past 55 years, the museum’s collections have grown to over 3,000 works. Visitors experience a unique balance of landscape, architecture and art. Once inside, you’re welcomed by a wonderful world of contemporary art in its many forms, from video art to photo installation. Modernist masterpieces, by artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore and Alexander Calder, all entertain a dialogue with nature – sunlight, scenery, breeze and crashing waves. Jensen’s original idea of creating a small museum of modern Danish art has grown into a place of international stature, but has retained its sense of grace, naturalness and openness. NORWAY for Families

David, a 20-something from Manhattan, was discussing the

Norwegian fjords with his parents. “My parents and I became really interested in them, so we started doing some research. I had always wanted to visit Scandinavia, so when my parents were inspired by the fjords to book a trip to Norway, I jumped on board,” said David.

Nærøyfjord,

Norway’s longest fjord, was the inspiration for the fictional city of Arendelle in Disney’s Frozen.

David, his parents and a few other family members and friends set out to discover the Norwegian fjords early last May. “It was a great time to travel because the weather was mild and there were very few other tourists. Actually, at some of the hotels we stayed in we were the only guests,” said David. They rented a car and mapped out a driving route from Bergen to Alesund, where they would pass the landmarks they wanted to see; most importantly UNESCO World Heritage designated Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord. “The fjords were our main focus, but a lot of the views from the highway and roads turned out to be equally as breathtaking. Although nothing can compare to Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord: They were incredibly impressive, above and beyond our expectations,” said David. Alesund

“It was really easy to travel around Norway since most Norwegian’s speak English, and they are very approachable. As cliché as it may sound, some of my favorite parts of the trip were my interactions with the local people. Yes, the views are breathtaking and the cultural exhibits are amazing, but interacting with the locals reveals so much about the people there. The Norwegians were extremely nice: When we asked for directions they went out of their way to print out a map, draw directions and write notes. In supermarkets, they always poured us coffee on the house. (Norwegians drink a LOT of coffee, always black),” said David. After spending over a week in Norway, David and his family continued on to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Germany and Estonia – all in the same trip. “It’s amazing how a simple discussion about Norway’s fjords could inspire such a tremendous trip,” David said, “I’m so glad that my family and I were able to share this experience together. b

Most families with young kids would spend their spring break at the beach, but

Libbie’s family did something a little different this year: Libbie,

her husband Tom and their children Tommy (age 10) and Camille (age 7) packed their bags and took off for Norway. “Tommy’s school friend is Norwegian and recently moved back to Norway, and his family invited us to come visit them. We had frequent flyer miles to use and the kids were off from school, so we jumped at the chance,” said Libbie.

They were only in Norway for a couple of days, but the family was able to see and do a lot in a short amount of time. “We took the scenic train trip from Oslo to Bergen, where you pass through beautiful landscapes. It’s a great trip for kids because even though the train ride is fairly long, there’s plenty of room for children to move around and there’s a break in between,” said Libbie. “We got off in Mydral and took the scenic Flåm Railway, followed by a cruise through Nærøyfjord. The views were spectacular.”

“Oslo Summer Park is a place tourists may not know about, but I would highly recommend it. They have different activities and courses appropriate for everyone over the age of three.”

When they returned to Oslo, the family got their adrenaline pumping at Oslo Summer Park, a climbing park featuring zip lines and rope courses. “Norwegian children are very independent; they walk to school on their own starting at a young age, and the ropes course was no different. The kids were on their own to explore the obstacle courses. It’s definitely a different culture,” said Libbie. “Oslo Summer Park is a place tourists may not know about, but I would highly recommend it. They have different activities and courses appropriate for everyone over the age of three. We had a great time: the adults enjoyed testing their endurance through the many obstacles, and the kids loved being able to navigate the children’s courses independently.” “Norway may not be the first destination that comes to mind for traveling families, but there are many great things to see and do that families of all ages can enjoy,” said Libbie. “We would love to go back and visit again.” b

CUISINE

A True Taste of the North: OSLO Worldly Delights by TIM JOHNSON

For some reason, I had assumed it would be easy to get into Maaemo. This little restaurant – which seats only 25 – burst onto the culinary radar a few years ago when it was awarded not one, but two Michelin stars just months after it opened. The place has been the toast of Oslo, and indeed all of Scandinavia, since they served up their first 10-course, 25-plate meal. I could almost taste those fresh Norwegian ingredients, which come with a rather daunting price tag (a dinner for one – with vino – will set you back a steep $650). And then, the reality. I consulted with a Norwegian colleague, who broke the bad news. “Sorry Tim, they only have eight tables, and they’re always fully booked.” Nonetheless, I still tried – contacting everyone I know as I explored Oslo’s many and varied culinary offerings.

Mathallen exterior

Just a few decades ago, Norway – traditionally a hardscrabble, seafaring country that ate more for survival than taste – was known mainly for pickled herring, lutefisk and klipfish. But those days are long gone. A northern nation now awakened to the fruits of its natural environment – and infused with great oil wealth – Norway has become a redhot destination for culinary travelers. And Oslo, its capital, is its epicenter. I started my foodie adventure at Mathallen. Inspired by old-time Scandinavian food

halls and opened just over a year ago, this repurposed, 110-year old steel mill now houses 28 individual shops, two restaurants, and a large kitchen that hosts cooking classes. Browsing its offerings, I chatted with shop owners – most of whom either grow their own ingredients or know the farmers personally. I sampled everything from handmade cheeses (traditional, smooth brown cheese and a bold Norsk camembert), and lovely smoked salmon, to distinctive (and delicious) moose meat cured with juniper and blueberries.

The latter I got from a spot named Smak, a cooperative of nine central Norwegian producers. I chatted with one of the owners, a man named Beito Trond Wahlstrøm. A cheese maker by trade, he explained that his home and workshop are located at the gateway to some of Norway’s most stunning, snowcapped mountains, about a three-hour drive from Oslo. He sources his milk – fresh every morning – from neighbors, then makes the cheese within an hour. “Norwegian ingredients are special,” Wahlstrøm told me, in perfect English. “The milk, the grass that

and the offerings change often, sometimes even nightly. As I nibbled on lunch and sipped a hoppy amber ale microbrewed in a basement on the east side of Oslo, he noted that sharing food is deeply ingrained in the country’s culture, and that the dishes at Smalhans, designed with that in mind, are served family style. He added that Norwegian food has changed dramatically over the past ten or fifteen years. People used to eat just to get full, and even in the ‘90s, he said, it was difficult to find a single place in town serving the national cuisine. But Noma, the Danish sensation that serves ultra-local and all natural food and is often listed as the world’s best restaurant, has exerted a regional influence. “It was good for all Nordic countries. Now there are lots of places to get fresh, local, Norwegian food,” he said. “We’ve evolved.” Seafood platter from Solsiden

the cows eat, it’s all natural and high quality. Much now is handmade.” Not quite full yet, I visited Smalhans, a trendy spot in a sunny suburban setting. I sat at an open window, and was joined by Anders Braathen, a young chef and one of three friends that recently pooled their resources to open this place. Showing me the menu – just a sheet of paper secured to a clipboard – Braathen explained that the ingredients here are mostly Norwegian and always in season,

I tasted more of the evolution at places like Solsiden, which doesn’t serve klipfish or lutefisk, but rather the freshest fruits of the sea. At a table overlooking Oslo’s beautiful harbor, bustling with pleasure craft and tall ships, I feasted on a giant platter of king crab, crayfish, oysters, scallops, shrimp and mussels – all sourced in local waters and super-fresh – washing it down with a Chablis as the sun sank over the water. After days of hoping to hear from Maaemo, I finally received a glimmer of hope. It wasn't the dinner reservation I had in mind, but

a midafternoon interview with the brain behind it all, a remarkable young man named Esben Holmboe Bang. I hustled over to the restaurant sandwiched between the city’s central train and bus stations. The 31-year old chef welcomed me into his bright, glassy space in a white apron, wearing a big smile on his face and a sleeve of tattoos on his left arm. He showed me around the place, and told me that he has three rules at Maaemo: the ingredients must be organic, biodynamic, and sourced solely in Norway. “Our food is crisp and clean – like the climate,” he explained, noting that before opening his doors, he studied up on Norway’s culinary history and traveled around the country to find the best suppliers, people that, he noted, “have their hands in the soil every day.” We chatted about the day that he learned the prestigious Michelin Guide had awarded him two stars in its very first review of Maaemo (a feat not even Noma can claim). “That day was crazy,” he remembered. “We went from this obscure restaurant on the east side of Oslo to a phenomenon in the world press.” Bang’s staff had already begun the work on that evening’s meal, and it smelled delicious. I lamented the fact that I couldn’t get in for dinner, but asked if maybe I could sample what was being cooked in the kitchen. “Um, no. We’re just prepping it now,” he said, apologetically. “But maybe next time!” I shook Bang’s hand and left the restaurant, the scent of that food still on my mind, vowing to return to Oslo – though next time with an advance dinner reservation for Maaemo. b

So on a splendid and mild midsummer evening, we wandered through Frogner Park among Vigeland’s masterpieces: stone babies having tantrums, crouched elderly men seeking solace, exultant women reaching skyward, men wrestling with opponents or with their demons.

OSLO’s Vigeland Park An enduring outdoor exhibition of works by Norway’s greatest sculptor by MICHAEL SHAPIRO

Though Vigeland didn’t possess the artistry of Michelangelo, his figures convey motion and intense emotion, surprising in this city of taciturn people who tend to rein in their feelings.

Vigeland, who also designed the medal for the Nobel Peace Prize, carved the sculptures that now reside in Frogner Park in the early to mid-20th century. The park is the fortunate result of a deal between Vigeland and the City of Oslo. The city provided the artist with a place to live and work; in return Vigeland agreed to donate to the city every sculpture he made for the rest of his life. Today more than 200 figures fill Frogner Park, often referred to as Vigeland Park, and the sculpture garden remains one of Oslo’s top attractions.

TO G ET TH E R E : The Vigeland sculpture garden is located in Frogner Park, on Ring Road 2, just west of downtown Oslo. Open 24 hours daily with free entry. A museum on the grounds has exhibitions about the sculptor and his work: www.vigeland.museum.no/en/vigeland-park

One installation, “The Wheel of Life,” traces the cycle from infancy to impending death. The pièce de résistance is Vigeland’s “Monolith,” a soaring obelisk composed of more than 100 figures, swirling toward the sky and reaching for a connection with the divine. It’s carved from a single tower of granite and took Vigeland and a pair of assistants more than 14 years to carve.

After winning a Fulbright Fellowship the author returns to the land of his great grandfather, 110 years after the family’s patriarch fled the thenimpoverished land. Dregni spends a year in Trondheim where his wife has a baby. He endures a meal of rakfisk (fermented fish), samples aquavit (a distilled spirit) and visits the Lofoten Islands. He’s wowed by Norway’s health care system but has trouble getting used to herring cakes and winter’s long, dark nights.

Winner of the Man Booker Prize, this novel takes place during New Zealand’s gold rush of 1866 in its wild southwestern town of Hokitika. Weird things are happening: a prostitute attempts suicide, a rich baron disappears and a hefty stash of gold is found in the house of a local drunkard – and it’s all set among a background of astrology. The New York Times called it “a true achievement. Catton has built a lively parody of a 19th-century novel, and in so doing created a novel for the 21st, something utterly new.”

You won’t confuse this book with works by Homer or Sophocles. It’s a light, fun novel about a woman, Lottie, whose hopes for marriage are dashed. Lottie falls back into the arms of an old lover and plots a return to the Greek isle where they spent a golden summer when she was 18. Author of the Shopoholic series, Kinsella evokes the allure of a mythical Greek isle and the way memory can transform a youthful summer of romance.

Set in South Carolina a generation before the Civil War, the protagonists of Invention – as in Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees – are two women seeking freedom and equality. Sarah Grimke, the daughter of a plantation owner, speaks out against slavery and for equality. Handful, a slave who works for the Grimke family, does what she’s told but burns to be free. The novel traces the lifelong friendship of Sarah and Handful as they seek to free themselves from the unjust repressiveness of 1830s Southern society.

Maybe it’s the season of the midnight sun that energizes the designers of Scandinavia in all genres to work through the night, revolutionizing the shape of a building or the silhouette of a shift dress. In by SUZANNE GANNON architecture, jewelry, furniture, fashion, décor, consumer products, technology, and countless other spheres, their influence has been apparent since the middle of the last century, when their simple yet functional forms became known to the world at large through exhibitions, prizes, and competitions – and subsequently contributed profoundly to the rise of the modern aesthetic.

Norway’s architects have made their mark on the international scene well below their latitude. The striking landscape they inhabit may be the inspiration for tranquil forms and a use of earth-bound materials. This TOURIST REST STOP, located on the Hardanger Fjord and designed by Huus og Heim Arkitektur, consists of torqued gabions filled with rubble that slope toward the ground. The firm’s contemporary practice has completed private homes, ferry terminals, embassy residences, churches, and apartment complexes where residential units are designed in the shape of a triangle.

Regarded as one of the grandfathers of Danish design, Hans Wegner broke new ground with many an organically shaped chair that took the sharp edge off the modern style. In the process, he inspired a whole generation of furniture-makers who have in the last few years experienced a sweeping revival that celebrates the service of function through form, and holds to the notion that practicality can co-exist with beauty. Wegner’s PAPA BEAR CHAIR was released in the early 1950s and can now be found through dealers or via authorized licensees.

Johannes Torpe, multi-disciplinary Danish arbiter of design, has taken his instincts for architecture, branding, and product design far and wide. With futuristic night club interiors, brand identities for bakeries and cupcake-makers, and furniture for both residential and commercial installations, the tastemaker has completed projects and delivered lectures on several continents. His line of BALLERINA LAMPS, made from porcelain and bamboo, makes a fanciful addition to any room in the house. He calls it “chunky and funky.”

Nearly 10 years in the making, the hood was continually refined based on the results of thousands of re-enacted cycling accidents. In the crowded market of hand-held gadgetry, LUMIGON’S T2 HD SMARTPHONE stands out from the pack thanks to an ability to resist both water and dust. The Danish company has managed to combine leading-edge technologies from a slew of best-of-breed manufacturers to produce a phone that features the following: a 1.7-GHz Snapdragon™ dual-core processor from Qualcomm that reduces charging frequency; Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3, which is thin, light, and damage-resistant; 4G LTE connectivity; and 128 GB of internal memory.

Chic and sophisticated with an irreverent streak are the dresses, blouses, jackets, and trousers conceived by the talented Ann-Sofie Back, the Swedish fashion designer whose eponymous line recently spawned a spin-off, Back. With imaginative details and interesting fabrics, her garments have won critical acclaim from many a catwalk maven, shows at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Sweden’s Gold Button Award, and an honor few designers can claim: a postal stamp solidifying her legacy. A biker jacket with a belt of exaggerated width makes a statement as does a skirt with a shredded hem.

The delicate designs of Maria Nilsdotter make a refreshingly feminine and sometimes cheeky counterpoint to the angular shapes and sharp cuts showcased on Scandinavia’s fashion runways. This Swedish artist, who incorporates stones into rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets shaped like bats, bones, and claws, says she finds her inspiration in mythology and folklore and likens her studio to the laboratory of a mad scientist. At her Stockholm shop you might find madly intricate and whimsical objects such as the “Bee” necklace with bullet-cut cabochon stones in a variety of colors, or the “Gargoyle”—a tiny creature of a ring set with an amethyst.

So when the snowmobiles stopped near a group of colorful tents, Fatimeh figured they’d soon meet other guests. “All this couldn’t be just for us,” she said. “But then he said, ‘This is all for you.’ ” Tears came to her eyes. The whole trip was a series of such surprises and, overall, a more luxurious and private take on many well-known Icelandic activities. A helicopter whisked them from the glacier. Their driver Lúdvik took them around in a Super Jeep. A keyboard was delivered to their Reykjavik hotel suite so Haroon could serenade Fatimeh over dinner. A VIP room at the Blue Lagoon provided a private entrance to the geothermal waters where they got massages on floating mats. As a gadget guy, Haroon was tickled by the many vehicles they hopped into to get around. But he was captivated even more by the natural surroundings. Haroon had first visited Iceland as a teen, taken there by an aunt and uncle. “I remember it was the most unique place I had ever been,” he said. “It was so romantic.” He vowed one day to return to this place with his wife. 26 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

Although he often travels for work, it’s usually to Boston and San Francisco, or maybe London. Fatimeh typically plans the family’s vacations. So Haroon turned to his travel agent to help him weigh his options. He wanted to introduce Fatimeh to new things but wanted it to be comfortable and relaxing, too. This wasn’t just an anniversary celebration but a brief time away from their three young children.

Within hours of arriving, the couple was soaking in Iceland’s geological wonders – literally. At the open-air, geothermal baths at Laugarvatn Fontana, a wellness center, steam from pools in the ground rises directly through grids in a cabin floor. Bedroom tent

The two days were filled with new adventures. Before reaching the glacier that night, they visited two waterfalls, and at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which drops 200 feet over cliffs,

they could walk behind the falls and see the rushing water from inside out.

Next was an off-road drive on a black sand beach. Finally, they headed toward their private camp. Lúdvik stopped to release air from the all-terrain tires to accommodate the rough ground leading to the ice cover. “The tires on this thing were at least four feet high,” Haroon marveled. On the glacier, cool air and fog surrounded them. They pulled on bright orange jumpsuits for their snowmobile excursion. “It looked like we were driving into a white misty unknown,” Haroon said. Near the camp, they could make out colorful structures like gumdrops in the distance. The grouping of tents included a kitchen tent for the five-star chef and his assistant to prepare a fresh seafood medley. It was served in the dining tent. A bedroom tent held a comfortable bed, heater and welcome chocolates. “It was like a hotel room when you’re inside,” Fatimeh said. A self-professed foodie, Fatimeh took photos and kept notes about their meals – including the first dinner of langoustine soup and monk fish and the next night’s meal of whale meat, goose breast and horse meat. The helicopter ride the next morning took them over the volcanic area of Eyjafjallajökull and dropped them off at Gullfoss. Translated as “golden falls,” Gullfoss plunges in three large steps toward a vast chasm in the earth.

Lúdvik met them there and drove them to Geysir, where they watched the earth erupt at regular intervals and the gush of water turn into steam and float up and away. The immersion into the natural environment was in contrast to Haroon’s typical days as an entrepreneur who founded an Internet company with his brothers. He managed to leave his laptop home, but said his cell phone goes with him everywhere, holding maps, camera, contacts and more. “If I have my cell phone and a charger I feel pretty good that I’m going to survive.”

To plan your own trip to Iceland, please contact your Ensemble Travel® Group consultant.

On their second and final night, the couple eased into the more urban surroundings of Reykjavik. Fatimeh was treated to hair styling and make-up, and the couple had a private viewing at an art gallery, since they enjoy buying local art. In retrospect, Haroon was thrilled about how the trip turned out but finds it difficult to convey how exceptional it was. “You can describe events but you can’t capture the emotion and specialness attached to it. Understanding that you shared something truly unique is something you can’t put words to.” b Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014 27

STOCKHOLM in My Heart A Brooklyn-based textile designer embarks on her regular pilgrimage to her homeland, and shares some of her favorite haunts. Every time I visit Stockholm I always get tickled. I continue to be charmed by this Swedish capital—its surrounding water, the trees and parks, the language, the architecture, the shops, the exhibitions and marvelous coffee breaks and pretty walkways. I grew up in Stockholm, so being a tourist in my old hometown is rather special and always a treat. I've called Brooklyn my home for the past 8 years. This is where I live with my family and work as a textile designer, with my company Lotta Jansdotter www.jansdotter.com. I travel back to Stockholm about once or twice a year. Whenever I return to Brooklyn, I bring back some Nordic flair in my bag (a new coat or shirt perhaps), rosy cheeks and plenty of design inspiration in my head.

Lotta at Rosendals Trådgård

Stockholm is an easy destination. Most Swedes speak English quite well and are very eager to practice their language skills on visitors. While public transportation is simple to figure out, I insist that you rent a bike to experience Stockholm. You will find loads

of safe and scenic bike lanes downtown and along the water. It is simply the best way to experience the city, and you have the freedom to stop anywhere along the way. There are free public bicycles available http://www.citybikes. se/en/Here-are-our-cycle-stands/ and many hotels rent bikes on an hourly or daily basis. Visiting Stockholm during the spring and summer months usually yields some of the best weather. The locals come out of hibernation and celebrate the sun and the light. Fall is also a good time to visit—as long as you bring a scarf and extra layers for those long, brisk walks. New exhibitions and performances are up, and more local events are planned. Winter certainly has its own charms, such as the holiday markets. As a surface designer, I create patterns and motifs and design fashion accessories and home products. It is important to visit a lot of stores and exhibitions. I call it market research. Of course, I also like to visit new places. Some I find out about through word of mouth, others I stumble upon during my city walks or bike rides. During a recent trip, I spotted “Mud” (Brännkyrkagatan 26); a tiny ceramics studio. I peeked in the windows and saw some fantastic things crafted out of clay. Going out for coffee and taking snack breaks are also high on my list of things to do in Stockholm. Well, it is sort of a national pastime. These respites are fondly referred to as “ fika.” Popular in Sweden, fika entails consuming a snack, typically with coffee. (Swedes love their coffee!)

STOCKHOLM C omprised of 14 islands, Stockholm is not very big, yet there is no shortage of things to do. FUN FOR KIDS & ADULTS

Kulturhuset, or “The Culture House” (Sergels Torg; kulturhuset.se) in the city center, has so much culture packed into it, hence the name. This is where I was exposed to my first cup of Chai Tea when I was 14 years old. You can enjoy excellent plays, movies, lectures, talks, and dancing events. There is a great playroom and library for kids, and a space with international magazines free for all to read. And don’t miss a great view from the top floor.

From the city center, you can reach the island of Djurgården by walking; hopping on a rented bike; or a 15-minute ferry ride from Slussen (which I recommend). You can enjoy beautiful walks along the water, as well as the most fabulous museum for kids: Junibacken (Galärvarvsvägen; junibacken.se). It is based on the much-loved author Astrid Lindgren’s books and characters—Pippi Langstrump (or Longstocking) being the most famous of them. It is a must if you are traveling with kids!

CAFES & RESTAURANTS While on Djurgården, make sure to visit Rosendals Trådgård (Rosendalsterrassen 12; rosendalstradgard.se). This place is a little bit of paradise, with greenhouses that have been converted into a cafe, garden shop, and gallery. You can enjoy delicious fare such as salads, soups, and smoked fish platters, as well as homemade cookies and buns. Dine in the garden cafe or take your tray to the apple orchard and eat there. This is where I go with family and friends, young and old. This is also where I go for inspiration and a bit of peace. If you feel like “fika time,” take a stroll to VeteKatten (Kungsgatan 55; vetekatten.se). I have been coming here since I was 13 years old. It is decorated with comfortable old couches, hand-woven rag rugs, gilded frames, cuckoo clocks on the walls, and flowers on the tables. It is a sweet oasis in the middle of the city, with

a splendid assortment of cakes, pastries, and cinnamon buns. A charming and superb restaurant called Sardin (Skånegatan 79; restaurangsardin.se) serves small dishes of all kinds, with a French flavor. I love the decor and to watch all the stylish eaters there. One of my new favorite spots is Aarts (Åsögatan 176; aartsmat.se) which serves a delicious locally grown beet salad and chanterelle soup. I simply love its decor. There’s such a smashing sense for details and a real effort has been made to make you feel welcome and right at home. The restaurant strongly believes in natural ingredients; a lot of it is organic and grown locally. You can find fish, rabbit, salads, and outstanding desserts. It’s a must-visit for a real culinary treat.

To plan your own trip to Stockholm, please contact your Ensemble Travel® Group consultant.

Bric-a-Brac (Swedenborgsgatan 5A; bric-abrac.se) is a small independent clothing and accessories label for men, women, and kids with very lovely, practical, comfortable, and high-quality items. I appreciate their sweet and simple style, and they always use the most wonderful materials in great colors and textures. Folckers (Hornsgatan 52; folckers.se) is a small, old-fashioned specialty store. It has been around since the 1890s and it seems to transport you back in time. The shop is filled with an abundance of ribbons, trims, and tassels. The last time I was here I bought some sweet bright yellow trim with small pom-poms on it—perfect for a cushion. Manos (Renstiernas gata 22; manos.se) is a shop run by Karin Eriksson, a talented ceramic artist. She has created a lovely space filled with crafts and special gift items. This is definitely a gem, and it could not be run by a nicer person, so do stop by. A very cool shop called Design Torget (Götgatan 31; designtorget.se) stocks beautifully designed things from both established and up-and-coming Swedish designers—books, housewares, fashion accessories, cards, and more. b

Personal color consultant, stylist, author B E ST TR I P E V E R

Traveling into a destination’s artistic past, like an anthropologist

After two decades spent selecting the right color for a ruffle worn by Susan Lucci of ABC’s “All My Children,” the most flattering hue for a pantsuit worn by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the most dapper ensemble in which Tom Hanks could read a play at a benefit in Los Angeles, or the most appropriate shade of ® cocktail dress comedienne Carol Burnett could wear off stage, Emmy Awardwinning David Zyla has taken his keen sense for tint and tone on the road. Based in New York City, he divides his time between the U.S. and Europe, offering personal consultations, including shopping excursions and advice, and speaking to audiences about his work. Included in this colorful itinerary is the occasional assignment to design a fascinator for a bride-to-be in London or to welcome a Ukrainian fashion contingent to the States. “I believe one can be empowered by color – and design and style,” says the author of Color of Style and the forthcoming 30 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

How to Win at Shopping. “Your eyes, hair, and skin express your personality and dictate what your palette is.” We spoke with the maven, who will soon depart for Philadelphia, Cleveland, Buffalo, Albany, Chicago, Tucson – where he will host a week of fashion – San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Columbus to promote his book and meet with clients. Here’s what he had to say about the power of color and his personal approach to travel:

Why does what you do matter? Color enables you to be the best version of yourself. The same dress can be sensational on one person and not sensational on another five women. My goal is to help my client discover what does look good. Once they are aligned with their color palette they tend to get amazing compliments from those they meet. By the time they’re off to a meeting with their boss, they’re ready to ask for a raise. And they’re probably going to get it.

What is your process? I meet with private clients for an initial two-hour session. This meeting usually takes place in a hotel of a certain caliber where suites include living spaces in addition to bedrooms and where we can benefit from natural light. We discuss the 24 personality archetypes, as well as color palette, personal style and clothing preferences, fragrance, and even art. Then we go shopping, or I design custom clothing or interiors based on our findings.

Have you got any travel secrets? Natural light is so important to my work because it’s true. But sometimes I have to supplement. So I’ve been known to transport full-spectrum bulbs encased in bubble wrap through TSA. And color swatches, of course.

STOCKHOLM, ACCORDING TO ZYLA Just back from Stockholm, which has emerged as a hot bed of clients seeking assistance with their personal color maps, whether for their wardrobes or their interiors, David Zyla muses on what the Scandinavian city has to offer:

Fashion & Style

Cultural Sights

Americans are currently quite trend-driven but at the same time still very interested in learning the personal colors and styles that will enable them to be the best versions of themselves. In Stockholm, the idea of dressing in a personalized color palette started in the 1980s and seems never to have left. The same can be said of the U.K. and Australia. I have found that my clients in these places love and embrace color whether it is the “in” color or style or not. All they care about is that it looks great on them.

There’s the Vasa Museet, a museum that recreates a warship that sank in the harbor on the first day of its voyage. It’s an extraordinary experience. Eighty to 90 percent of it was recovered. It dates to the 1950s and was beautiful in its design. I was interested in the original paint colors, which were very bright, like carousel colors. The Moderna Museet has a wonderful collection of curators who produced an extraordinary aesthetic. The Royal Palace is not so crowded and it’s full of incredible details. At the Royal Dramatic National Theatre I’ve seen a few productions including Richard III and Amadeus. It’s exciting to see an old European company doing classics in a contemporary setting at a world-class level. Also, the Nordiska Museet offers incredible decorative arts, a chronicle from the 1600s to the present day.

What about packing tips? If you’re the type of person who doesn’t know what you’ll wear tomorrow and you like having choices, then you should be ready to pay for a checked bag. If you’re more focused, then you can bring a smaller carry-on containing one neutral and one color. If you have neutral hair, then for your basics you can pack items in camel, pearl-gray, chocolatebrown, charcoal, and dark olive. Then for your color elements, which are derived from the various components of your eyes, you can include moss and emerald green, citrus, and topaz. These are the focal points that will add a pop of color in a sweater or a shirt. Then pack a shoe in your best metallic and choose between gold and silver jewelry.

How do you dress for success when traveling? I pack to minimize wrinkles and then hang my clothing upon arrival and steam it in the shower. I’ve got a video on my Web site that demonstrates how to do it.

What color is your luggage? It’s an olive-green and topaz suitcase on wheels.

Restaurants

Shops NK builds incredibly beautiful stores that are great examples of Scandinavian design. They are famous for their ice cream counters. Stockholm is a fantastic source for vintage clothing stores. Old Touch offers men’s and women’s fashions from 1890 to 1970 – everything from undergarments to handkerchiefs, suspenders, and spectacle frames. A. Marchesan sells menswear from before 1970 and it’s set up like a store from 1940. You feel as though you’ve stepped back in time amidst period cabinets, fixtures, and chandeliers. Others that come to mind include Epok, Marielle Second Hand, Sundown Covey, Lisa Larsson Second Hand, and Herr Judit.

Go to Operakällaren on a Wednesday for the special three-course menu with French duck. The stunning Art Nouveau interior, complete with original frescoes, carved paneling, and stained glass literally transports you to another time. The seared foie gras with cream of roasted macadamia nuts, flambéed apricots and apricot vinaigrette was a culinary experience probably worth the trip to Sweden!!

AVALON WATERWAYS

Just Built Differently

This is a river cruise company that invites innovation, imagination and a relentless desire to create a smart use of space to be its guide. The result? MORE SPACE. BIGGER VIEWS. MORE COMFORT … All thanks to one-of-a-kind Panorama SuitesSM on the industry’s only Suite Ships®.

WHEN DESIGNING ITS SHIPS, AVALON WATERWAYS STARTED WITH THE TRAVELER INSTEAD OF THE SHIP.

The Suite Ships of Avalon are revolutionizing the river cruise industry. For instance, on these signature vessels, Avalon brings an unprecedented level of thoughtfulness and attention to detail to every aspect of the Panorama Suites, providing travelers an oasis to escape to, not escape from. Even better? Avalon doesn’t offer travelers just a few Panorama Suites on each ship. Instead, 80 percent of the guest rooms on Suite Ships are Panorama Suite (they’re 30 percent larger than the average river cruise room).

32 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

In designing its ships, Avalon has refused to see space as a barrier. That fact couldn’t be truer when looking at the company’s inspired indoor/outdoor space. For instance, Avalon’s Open-Air Balconies®, a completely new concept, make full use of the intended balcony experience – in any weather condition, in any season – without compromising room space. How? Giant wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows with a 7-foot opening. Avalon has considered every detail of the cruise experience, but perhaps it’s what the

company hasn’t done that makes it so unique. It hasn’t filled ships to capacity with people. In fact, because the river cruise line made its rooms so spacious, there’s less people on board. Simply put, Avalon Waterways is built

MIND by LAURA JANA

NEW ZEALAND FOR FIVE The fact that New Zealand has long been on my bucket list doesn’t do much to distinguish me from fellow travel devotees; adventure, nature and photography enthusiasts; or just about anyone else, for that matter. Nor did my husband’s and my plans to take time off from our fast-paced professional lives for a much needed vacation. What did, however, seem to raise a few eyebrows was our decision to invite our three – that’s right, three – teenagers along on our two-and-a-half week adventure. Yes, we knew full well that traveling with one’s teens in tow admittedly requires a whole host of additional accommodations and considerations. But when all was said and done, our family’s trek from Auckland all the way down to the Southern-most tip of New Zealand’s South Island served to deliver on the promise of leaving us with invaluable family memories.

XX Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

LAYING DOWN GROUND RULES BEFORE TAKEOFF

SHOULD THEY STAY OR SHOULD THEY GO? Of course my husband questioned whether being in one’s teens was old enough to truly appreciate such a grand trip. Logistically speaking, it probably would have taken as much planning to find someone to supervise them in our absence, and our children assured us that teenagers nowadays apparently have bucket lists with New Zealand on them too. Even beyond any logistical challenges or potential protests associated with having them stay home, however, was a much more important determining factor in having them go: my long-held belief that experiencing the world through travel significantly impacts a child’s view of the world for the better. And so it was decided.

NEW ZEALAND FAMILY AFFAIR Even with my experience as a frequent and international traveler, pinning down an action-packed international itinerary for a family of five required considerably more forethought than usual. First, there was the fact that my husband had no interest whatsoever in traversing the scenic countryside in the traditional New Zealand tourist style of a rented camper van. His idea of a vacation simply didn’t include that much sharing of space with our offspring. With an irrepressible desire to see and do just about all that both the north and south islands have to offer in just about half the time most sane people do it in, we therefore enlisted the expertise of a travel agent in order to plan for the necessary planes, trains, automobiles and boats, and make our selections from the virtual smorgasbord of the country’s famed outdoor activities, adventures, and scenic routes. With our ambitious agenda set, we were ready to embark on our journey…almost.

In the spirit of having fun, we tried not to set too many ground rules (other than the requisite “everybody better appreciate how lucky they are to be coming along,” “we don’t want to hear any fighting on our vacation,” and “nobody gets to complain when mom stops to take pictures!”). Other than that, our only real ground rule was that the invitation to join us was conditional on being willing to leave one’s cell phone behind. Simple, right? Well not really, as this request proved to be so daunting for one of our three that he started to get jittery, argumentative, and display other concerning signs of withdrawal at the mere mention of it. He desperately tried to come up with reasons why he needed it: Yes, he was aware he wouldn’t have an international SIM card. No, he couldn’t possibly use a replacement alarm clock. And by all means, he must take pictures with his camera phone, as no other camera could possibly serve as a substitute. This last argument in particular elicited snickers from both his siblings and parents, as he’s long proven himself to be intolerant of anyone stopping to take pictures, much less realistically interested in taking any himself! I’d like to tell you that I held fast to my edict. But at the last minute, and against my better judgment, I settled for a peace-keeping compromise, with a promise of significantly curtailed use. Fortunately, he kept his promise.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL From the time the wheels touched down on our overnight flight from San Francisco to Auckland early on Christmas Eve morning, we were off and running. Starting with an arrival day bridge climb-turned-bungyjumping experience and continuing down an adrenalin and intrigue-packed list that included heli-hiking, jet-boating, sheepsheering, Hobbiton and Glow-worm cave tours, one of the top rated one-day hikes in the world, volcanic islands, and an aweinspiring overnight boat trip through the fjords, the icing on the cake was to come at the very end in the form of a shark cage dive. Of course this final activity, which half the family (not to mention a few relatives) weren’t so sure about, was entirely my doing. That is, if you factor in that it was I who prodded my

fifteen year old to get more actively engaged in the planning of the trip. A few short Google searches later and he was engaged. Really engaged, and absolutely convinced that the thing he wanted to do most in the world (or at least in New Zealand) was go shark cage diving. After some deliberation, we asked ourselves how often would we have this opportunity. And then we asked our travel agent to be sure and find a reputable dive operation. Despite competing with the likes of the Travel Channel, our children quickly realized that no two-dimensional rendering could stack up to the real-world experiences. And quite honestly, that, in and of itself, made the trip a success.

THE BEST LAID PLANS When all was said and done, you could’ve picked just about any one of our scheduled activities and gotten a glowing account from every member of my family. Yet you’ll notice I said “just about any,” but not all. That’s because despite the best-laid plans, the reality was that not everything went our way. Having triumphed over the potential of uncooperative kids, instead we found

Engage Your Audience

Engaging children of any age in just about any process goes a long way towards helping ensure they’ll enjoy the end-result. Especially when it comes to traveling to foreign destinations, challenge your teens to get the most out of the experience by learning the lay of the land, seeking out and contributing activity suggestions, and partaking in the overall planning.

ourselves facing some uncooperative weather that could have really put a damper on the trip. Mount Tongariro was closed to hikers. Helicopters were grounded at the Franz Josef Glacier. And in the end, daunting ocean swells precluded us from shark cage diving after all. But here’s where my children really surprised me: I discovered that they were far more mature than I would have given them credit for in rolling with the punches, adapting, and focusing on what we had accomplished rather than what we had missed. In fact, some of our long drives and entirely unplanned stops –throwing pebbles in the ocean as storm clouds rolled in, walking in the rain down a muddy path to a waterfall, or just appreciating (and photographing!) storm clouds, water spouts and rainbows along the way – were some of the most memorable.

LESSONS LEARNED At the same time as my teenagers were demonstrating their maturing travel skills, not to mention their ability to survive weeks without cell phones (okay – only two of them, but two out of three isn’t bad), I

Discuss Accommodations

Deciding who sleeps where is important. Day-today accommodations required of travelling teens typically include significant adjustments to sleep habits (if sleeping until noon is incompatible with the rest of the family’s agenda), and adapting to eating what is available, when it’s available. Equally important, establish that this is a family affair — include accommodating activities that may be more appealing to some, than to others.

came to realize that my teens still function under the belief (delusion) that parents are all-knowing. Handy in some instances, sure, but dumbfounding when they repeatedly asked what we were doing, whether they’d like it, or how much longer it would take to get somewhere despite knowing full well that we had never been to New Zealand before, either. I also gained a couple of additional new parental insights – like the fact that my daughter is an adrenalin junkie, my middle child is afraid of heights (which he confessed to us only after bungy jumping off the Auckland bridge so as not to be shown up by his sister!), and that I shouldn’t automatically take my children at their word. I know this latter conclusion may sound surprising – especially from a pediatrician who actively promotes the fostering of adolescent independence. But they are the ones who were distinctly less than enthused at our travel agent’s suggestion to take a boat trip from Queenstown across to a barbecue buffet lunch and tour a working sheep farm. Little did they anticipate the fantastic food (my son’s plate piled ridiculously high with “the best ribs he’d ever eaten”), or the

Be Prepared

Encouraging teenagers to put thought into what to pack generally leads them to ask questions such as “what’s the weather like?” and “what sort of attire will I need?” As much as independent packing skills are something to strive for, use your own travel-savvy judgment before departure, to avoid suffering from adolescent oversight far from home.

amusing sheep shearing demonstration (who knew sheep predictably go entirely limp when positioned on their backs, making sheep shearing ever-so entertaining?). I admit, the words “I told you so” did come to mind, but I kept them to myself. Maybe my kids really were learning to appreciate just how fortunate they were, despite a forced sheep shearing detour and, a missed face to face with a Great White.

LASTING MEMORIES ECHOING IN OUR HEADS In the end, I’d like to think that my kids learned a few new things about me, too. Like the fact that I really do know what I’m doing when it comes to planning a fun trip. And that I, too, can be spontaneous. Case in point? Neither my children, nor my husband for that matter, ever thought I’d bungy jump. To be fair, neither did I…and to be technically accurate, I didn’t. Instead, I naively opted to pull a securing pin out of a harness from which I was suspended 400 meters above Queenstown on the infamous Ledge Swing, at which point I plummeted straight down before getting to the swinging

PLANNING

AH EAD Cruising the Baltics by ANNA HOBBS

Saint Petersburg has been on our bucket list ever since we discovered its incredible history, its return to the grandeur it once had as the capital of the Russian tsars and the influence of Catherine the Great. It is no secret that Baltic cruises have soared in popularity. My husband and I learned this the hard way when we tried to make a reservation six weeks before a Crystal cruise that would take us to Saint Petersburg and five other ports of call in early June.

“Sorry,” we were told, “the ship is fully booked.”

44 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

S

o, we treated the booking process as a learning opportunity. Lesson # 1: Book early. Lesson # 2: Go anyway. We opted for a 10-day sailing on Crystal Serenity in July, during the peak tourist season. When we did finally get on board, the first thing we discovered was that they didn’t call Catherine “the Great” for nothing. A minor Prussian princess, she was summoned to Russia at the age of 14 by Empress Elizabeth to marry her son and produce an heir. She came to power after her husband was assassinated, determined to modernize Russia under Western European lines.

From Stockholm, the 10-day itinerary included six ports of call in six countries, offering a glimpse of some of Europe’s most vibrant cities. With three days (a minimum we were told) in Saint Petersburg, we toured the Hermitage Museum and other extravagant palaces built before and during Catherine’s reign. On port-intensive cruises such as this one, a comprehensive shore excursion program is one of the most important things to consider, especially when the ports include Europe’s most exotic and historic cities.

THE LAP OF LUXURY

O

nboard Crystal Serenity, we were pampered by a friendly, attentive staff that anticipated our every need. We were served gourmet meals paired with first-rate, complimentary wines. We hit the dance floor each evening before taking in the evening’s entertainment, or watching the midnight sun set. These, we told each other, are some of life’s pure joys. And then there was Jaison, our tall, handsome butler who told us he was at our beck and call. Each afternoon Jaison would announce Happy Hour with a plate of hors d’oeuvres and a glass of bubbly, welcome refreshment after a day of touring and sightseeing. A man of many talents, he whisked away our ironing for same-

day service, made a rumpled tuxedo look like new, provided hot tips for sights to see or ship activities not to miss, and never missed giving a nod of approval when we gussied up for the captain’s reception or a special dinner. Our penthouse stateroom was superb, both understated and luxurious. It had everything you would expect in a six-star floating resort. As for dining options, we liked the elegant Crystal Dining Room that allows passengers to dine at a different time each evening. We also enjoyed the more intimate, Italianflavored Prego as well as Silk Road, with a sushi bar that could hold its own in Tokyo. The all-inclusive pricing made it possible to relax and enjoy the amenities instead of worrying how big a bar tab we’d created or how much to tip the staff who make pampering us look effortless. Memorable doesn’t begin to describe the experience. However, next time we will book early to avoid high season. Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014 45

The two days we scheduled in Stockholm were not enough to see as much as we would have liked, but enough to know that we would return. A comfortably sized city with the advantages of an international metropolis, it sparkled under the summer sun. Enjoying lunch at a sidewalk café, we were gobsmacked by the young, handsome blondes that sauntered by, not a homely one in sight. Also not to be missed were the Vasa and Nobel Prize Museums. For ‘60s music fans there is the Abba Museum where you “walk in and dance out.” Leaving Stockholm, we sipped champagne on our private balcony while being treated to some of the most superb scenery of the trip as the ship glided past the thousands of islands that make up the Swedish Archipelago. The Old Town of Estonia’s capital, with its cobbled streets, dotted with Gothic spires and lined with ancient gabled houses, is a must

Our time in this magical city was precious. We packed every available moment touring its castles, including its crown jewel, the Hermitage Museum; strolling the opulent Peterhof Palace gardens that Peter the Great created to emulate Versailles. We poked through the unbelievably ornate Catherine Palace, amazed at the artifacts she amassed during her reign. We took in an endless parade of architectural gems, notably the pastel baroque and rococo palaces along the embankment of the Neva River. Each evening

“Berlin is a city of open spaces, green spaces and water,” our engaging guide told us at the start of our afternoon walk-about. We discovered an outstanding city whose history is illustrated in the form of open-air, street museums. “We are aware of the atrocious things that have been done,” he said. “We must not hide our history.” COPEN H AGEN

A full-swing jazz festival greeted us in Copenhagen with music drawing crowds on every city centre square. We took in traditional tourist sites such as the sculpture of the Little Mermaid who turned 100 this year, the Tivoli Amusement Park and the Amalienborg Palace on a hop-on, hop-off bus and the harbour boat tour, the best way to see the city’s glossy architectural showpieces, including a stunning new opera house that floats on its own island. b

Travel Makes the Heart Grow Fonder They say you should never travel faster than your guardian angel can fly. These mothers and daughters know, the best way around that rule ... is to take her with you. Few memories are as precious as those we create together.

Karen, May & Lee

For as long as they can remember, Karen and her daughters, May and Lee have been taking annual trips. Together, they’ve seen Europe, Asia and Australia. Now that May is working and Lee in college, the trio’s time together is even more precious. This year, they spent spring break in Vienna and took a summer trip to Singapore with a hop to Penang for a fun, long weekend.

Laura, Nina & Jules

Ever since the girls were little, Laura has taken her daughters – Nina and Jules – on at least one trip a year. Time away from all of the usual distractions allows the three of them to reconnect, have fun, and bond. Now that the girls have grown up, they vote on what trip to take next. They try to pick something different every year – from faraway destinations to quick getaways. Last year, they went on a spa vacation in Colorado. This year, it was wine tasting in Napa Valley.

DOWN UNDER Most people interested in travel have already formed a few well-defined ideas about what might await visitors in Australia and New Zealand. Anyone arriving can reasonably expect to be impressed by Sydney’s distinctive “Coat-hanger” Harbour Bridge; the familiar, sail-shaped silhouettes of the Opera House and the sophisticated social enclave of The Rocks. New Zealand probably brings to mind the majesty of the South Island’s Fiordland National Park, the quirky “Beehive” parliament buildings in Wellington, Auckland’s yacht-spangled twin harbors and the steaming geysers and fumeroles of Rotorua’s thermal area. But along with these worthy and justly famous sights, travelers sailing in Australia and New Zealand aboard Seabourn Odyssey will discover a number of places that may have evaded their advance notice, but which are likely to loom large in their fond memories of cruising in the Antipodes.

52 Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014

Make this the year you finally visit all the marquee highlights and the many hidden treasures of Australia & New Zealand, aboard the intimate, all-suite Seabourn Odyssey.

Akaroa is a case in point. Nestled handsomely on the shores of a long, deep bay under the shadow of the Banks Peninsula’s steep, fluted hills, Akaroa has maintained its heritage as a historical remnant of the sole French colonial adventure in New Zealand. Its waters are home to numerous species of whales and dolphins, including the small, very rare Hector’s dolphins found only in New Zealand. Across the rolling hills of the Canterbury countryside, Christchurch reflects an entirely different and eminently English aspect beside its own River Avon. The breathtaking Queen Charlotte Sound outside Picton may rival the more famous Fiordland in terms of sheer scenic splendor, and picturesque Dunedin, at the head of its own long, deep-cut loch, shimmers like a Georgian vision of Scottish Brigadoon, until you notice the penguins, fur seals and albatrosses that grace its Otago Peninsula headlands. Just off New Zealand’s southernmost coast, Stewart Island’s Half Moon Bay also boasts a town with a Scots derivation. Tiny Oban is a plucky outpost whose year-round residents number so few that its telephone directory comprises a single typed page. Seabourn Odyssey’s 16-day voyages between Auckland and Sydney will deliver you to these and other surprising discoveries, as well as to fascinating, world-class cities such as Melbourne and Wellington. Natural splendors including Milford Sound, the spectacular thermal area and Maori cultural center of Rotorua will be on your doorstep day after day, as you travel in consummate elegance and ease aboard the World’s Best Small-Ship Cruise Line. SMALL W NDERS

A privately chartered sailing trip in the Aegean Sea by NANCY HELLMRICH

IF I HAD TO BE HONEST, I would say our trip to Greece was the direct result of an early mid-life crisis. After years of climbing the ranks in the chaotic world of advertising, I was ready to do something meaningful and lasting with my life. So when the agency’s owner asked me to choose 20 people from the staff to let go in an upcoming re-org, I jumped at the chance. After discussing the matter with my husband, Marcus, I submitted a list with one name on it: mine. We sold our house, furniture and all, to a bachelor looking for a “pre-loaded” second home. Then we packed our bags and flew to Athens, where we met up with friends who had inspired the trip.

Nancy lounges aboard the yacht Marcus at the helm (inset) Ensemble Lifestyles Fall 2014 XX

Giddy with newfound freedom, Marcus and I toured the ancient Acropolis, marveled at the Parthenon, explored the Agora, shopped the local market, and pursued a Mediterranean diet. All the while, long forgotten humanities studies came rushing back in vivid detail. Yes, there were crowds, but we hardly saw them through our Hellenic daze so lost in mythology, The Iliad, and The Odyssey were we. Later that evening, en route to our Poseidon-themed hotel, we noticed locals streaming from their homes. This was the first hint at what our skipper later referred to as “Greek Mean Time.” As in many places where the days are hot, Greeks come out at night. The next morning, we boarded a small plane for Leros, an island in the Aegean archipelago known as the Dodecanese. Although Dodecanese translates as “twelve islands,” there are more than 163 in the arrangement, 26 of which are inhabited. The larger islands, such as Rhodes and Kos, are popular stops for cruise ships. Thanks to the deft designs of our travel planner, we were scheduled to sail mostly among the small wonders of the region. Our itinerary included: Leros, Arki, Patmos, Marathi, Lipsos, Agathonissi, and Kalymnos.

An intimate journey among lesser-known islands A common theme among the Dodecanese is that they have changed hands repeatedly since ancient times. Each of the battles left scars and each of the occupiers left architectural and cultural influences that have melded into the AWAY FROM islands’ lore. On Leros, THE LARGE CROWDS on for example, you can the “poster” islands, we were free hike to the remains to rent scooters and explore the whiteof a temple to Artemis, erected washed towns and surrounding hillsides. by the Spartans.

A medieval castle built by the Knights of St. John, is believed to sit atop an ancient Byzantine fortress. And the town of Lakki, an ofttargeted WWII naval base, surprises many with its Italian Rationalist architecture. The port at Lakki is where we boarded a lithe, Atlantic sailing yacht that was named for an exquisite film star and skippered by an amiable Englishman.

Savoring the tastes of late-summer Aegean cuisine Our first destination was Arki (or Arkoi), home to a population of 50, a herd of goats that roam the hills with their little bells clunk-clunking, and a couple of tavernas, which were shaded by pergolas festooned with bright fuchsia bougainvillea. That evening, we dined on braised goat, lush salads, creamy cheeses, and fresh-from-the-sea calamari. As became our routine, Marcus and I rose early the next morning, ordered coffee at the taverna, and watched weathered fishermen mend their nets. Here, “American” coffee meant freeze-dried instant, so we always opted for Greek coffee – a thick, meaningful espresso that leaves woody grounds in the bottom of your cup. Around noon we set sail for Patmos, where we joined religious pilgrims on tours of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse. In a study of opposites, a few of us then hiked to a “naturalist” beach, which spurred lively conversation about modesty back home in the land of the free and the brave.

Leros

Most evenings we dined as a group on the cool stone patio of a local restaurant or at a long table set on the beach beneath the stars. Each taverna offered its own twist on late summer Aegean cuisine. Everything was made fresh from local ingredients: grilled meat and fish, salads and grape leaf dolmades, tasty souvlaki, flaky spanakopita, hearty moussaka. In each port, we mingled with other sailors from

Greece, Turkey, the U.K., Italy, France, Sweden, Germany, and Norway. Sailing, swimming, and carefree spontaneity With a seasoned skipper and crew, and only 3 - 5 hours of sailing each day, life was pretty grand. We spent each night in port, drank coffee with the sunrise, then hoisted the anchor and sailed off into the late morning sun. At sea, we took turns furling and unfurling the sails, manning the helm, and lounging on the teak deck. In the afternoon, we’d stop for lunch and a swimming, snorkeling, or cliff diving (!) adventure. At one such stop we swam through an underwater cave to an interior lagoon that was out of this world. At another, the boys took turns free diving to test their dive watch altimeters. At some point, an impromptu cocktail party usually broke out. It was these lazy days that embedded in us a deep and abiding love of full sails, cool white linen shirts, and gin and tonics with lime.

AT SOME POINT, an impromptu cocktail party usually broke out. It was these lazy days that embedded in us a deep and abiding love of full sails, cool white linen shirts, and gin and tonics with lime.

On the island of Marathi, the taverna’s waitress – a black-haired beauty named Tula – brought us fresh fruit and homemade yogurt that put American “Greek” yogurt to shame. Reinvigorated, we spent the day swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the ruins of crusader castles, classical churches, and hidden gun stations. On board that night, sipping boat drinks after a boisterous dinner ashore, we saw a strange glow in the water. Our skipper, a career chemist, launched into the concept of bioluminescence. Gesticulating wildly to bring his explanation to life, he knocked his prescription glasses ‘ka-plunk’ into

the water. Thinking they were gone forever, we half-heartedly marked the spot with a buoy and turned in for the night. The next day, he and Marcus dove down and retrieved the wayward spectacles to everyone’s delight. Then we pulled up the anchor and sailed for Leros and a bitter-sweet finale at the popular Savana Bar. The next morning, coffees in hand, Marcus and I waved a sad goodbye to our yacht as she set sail without us ... then decided to find a hotel and stay on the island a few more days. We had tasted real freedom – the wind in our hair, the feel of the keel slicing through the sea, the casual comfort of ubiquitous tavernas. It’s no small wonder we wanted more. b
