I’m really excited about 2014 – I’ve had a good feeling about the upbeat nature of this industry for a while now. While all around was in the recession doldrums, the news landing in my in-box each week has been constantly upbeat and positive. In the second half of 2013, company after company within the lighting sector was reporting record sales, new office openings, staff expansions and growth in exports: Chelsom’s export sales are up a very healthy 15 per cent; Astro reported record sales figures, with growth of 25 per cent year-on-year; Robe opened a Middle East headquarters in Dubai; Photonstar announced updated, improved revenue figures, and ACDC won a huge contract to light Muscat’s new airport in Oman. In short, the opposite of almost every other sector in the UK right now. The feel-good factor seems to be backed up by recent news from MTW Research too. At the end of 2013, the company conducted a report on the state of the UK lighting market, predicting strong growth for the industry as a whole, and particularly for the LED sector. The report forecasts increasingly buoyant growth in 2014, as sales of LED lighting are set to generate revenue in excess of £700m over the next four years. And it goes so far as to predict a return to pre-recession levels as early as 2015. The lighting industry has its fair share of awards, but of late, a number of non-industry specific awards have been given to companies within the sector too, including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade to Astro; GlassGuard reaching the finals of the Eastern Daily Press Business Awards; and PhotonStar CEO, James McKenzie winning the Energy Institute’s Individual Achievement Award. From next month, TL will be joining the general industry expansion to cover the retail lighting sector in a bit more detail. While our high streets shrink, those retailers left are emerging fitter, leaner, and better lit than ever, and we’re going to make it our mission to share its lighting success stories. And my wish for the New Year? Long may this period of growth and expansion last. Let’s all make hay while the sun shines, and hopefully continue this upward trend. Gill Anderson | editor

Investing in the future According to the LIA, the lighting industry is changing dramatically with new advances in technology coming to the fore almost daily. To meet these market demands, developing technologies and with the future of the industry in mind, the LIA Laboratories is investing in a 7,000 sq ft lighting lab ajacent to the LIA building in Telford. The new development will allow the LIA Laboratories to develop and meet the industry requirements in the future. Together with the new building and increased capability, the LIA foresees the doubling of staff in the next two years, ensuring its customers have access to expert knowledge and testing services. The planned opening date is yet to be announced, but it will be in mid-2014, with the new photometry academy forming a central focus of the new laboratories.

Design buddies This month we turn the spotlight on two creative talents – lighting designer, Peter Straka, and his business partner, Manuela Szewald, who together make up KAIA At first glance, it seems perhaps an unlikely alliance – an Austrian metalworker turned engineer, artist and lighting designer, and a German lawyer with a love of architecture and design – but that’s the team behind KAIA, a new brand to arrive in the UK. Straka is the founding partner of KAIA and also its designer. Born in Vienna, where he trained as a metalworker before studying engineering and fine art, he now splits his time between his home city and London. Inspired by the 19th Century Viennese Secessionist movement (similar to the Arts & Crafts movement in the UK), his work embodies its principles, with a series of metal fittings that combine quality and precision with a timeless aesthetic. The resulting designs are both functional to use and beautiful to look at. Straka’s partner in the business is Manuela Szewald. Born in Germany, she trained as a lawyer before her passion for architecture and design led to a career change. Szewald, who lives in London with her family, is the driving force behind the company’s decision to launch the brand here. KAIA Lighting London – Vienna was founded in 2013 as a business partnership between Straka as founder and designer, and Szewald as managing director.
Q&A What does the word KAIA mean? MS. KAIA are Polynesian gods of creation that represent both the lighter and darker sides of life. Peter has chosen this name because this duality is constant in Peter’s life and design. The design process in Peter’s work is both a complete circle and a continuous journey with beginnings and endings. The result is the design equivalent of a journey: with the light off – the aesthetic object, with the light on – the value of its function.
What are your backgrounds – did you grow up in similar environments? MS. Our backgrounds are not similar; we both have completely different educational backgrounds. Peter started

Inspiration is a process for me, which cannot be planned or determined, it just happens
his career as a metal worker for the public tram service in Vienna. Surrounded by the constant smell of iron and tough working conditions didn’t leave much space for inspiration and creativity, so Peter decided to go to evening school to study for his A levels. He went on to study engineering at the Technical University of Vienna, where he gained a profound understanding of engine building and construction. In the process, Peter became fascinated with the idea of combining his knowledge and understanding of metalwork with the creation of something beautiful yet functional. He applied to the Viennese Academy of Applied Arts to study industrial design and was accepted. He graduated in 2003 and a year later he founded KAIA. I was born in Landshut, a small Bavarian town in Germany, where I went to school. I studied law and political science at the University of Passau, specialising in tax law. After my degree, I gained a Phd in the taxation of financial instruments at the University of Muenster. Before going on to work as a tax lawyer with JP Morgan in Frankfurt and London. Peter, as the designer behind the brand, what inspires you? PS: Inspiration is a process for me, which cannot be planned or determined, it just happens. It happens in particular when I research certain things, when I get a deeper and more profound knowledge in a certain subject. However, it is also enthusiasm for something. It is the kind of enthusiasm we see particularly with young children, when they play with shadows from the sunlight or watch marching ants with fascination. Recently, I did some detailed research on spheres: Firstly, I analysed the sphere from a mathematical and geometrical point of view. Then I started to look at spherical shapes in nature, like the dandelion, and after that I researched the history of architecture and design, where people have been inspired by spheres, and what kind of objects they have created. After some time I come to a point where I start to sketch and outline, and then my own ideas come into my mind inspired by the research I did before. This is the beginning of a design process, which will go on for a while and quite often you end somewhere, sometimes also in a one way and you will start all over again… So inspiration is attention, alertness and mindfulness about everything happening around you; at least that’s the meaning for me.
How did you meet and become partners in KAIA? MS: We met through a mutual friend, and discovered a shared passion for architecture and art. Whenever we met we would have endless talks about the Viennese Jugendstil, the “Wiener Werkstaette”, Vienna’s history of architecture and art, but also about KAIA’s philosophy and Peter’s design. It has become an open-ended discussion. During one such conversation Peter expressed his wish to expand more internationally and focus himself more on the design and fabrication side of KAIA. Then all the pieces fell into place: my long friendship with Peter, passion for KAIA’s philosophy,

business background and wish to take a more entrepreneurial role in my future work life…
PS: It is really difficult to decide for a favourite piece of my design collection. It is like you ask a Mum or Dad about ‘who is your favourite child?’ I just like all of them; they all have their stories, their problems in the design process, their charisma, and hence their justification to be part of KAIA’s studio line. MS: The LUM is my favourite lighting object, because it shows, in my opinion a lot what KAIA is all about: simplicity as the ultimate sophistication. The LUM is purity, elegance and geometric perfection. I am especially fascinated that your clearly see the two pyramids, which make the star shape. If you break it up further, it is all about eight triangle faces or 12 edges. When it is illuminated, you will see a play of shadows reflecting the geometric shape.
Have you opened branches anywhere outside Austria, and why pick London specifically? MS: We just moved our headquarters to London. I am working and living with my family in London for nine years, so London has become home for me. Also, KAIA wanted to expand and work more internationally. London is the international hub for design and architecture. Both reasons made it obvious to move to London. Are there any design elements that theme the work? PS: My design combines the essential aspect of my educational background: the application of art, construction technique and craftsmanship with the vision to explore things to their very essence. The design is the manifestation of the inner workings of my mind. KAIA lighting is characterised by functional beauty, simplicity, timelessness, purity, elegance, geometric perfection and control.
Who is your favourite lighting designer? PS: There is never just one favourite or best architect, landscape architect or artist, there are always many extraordinary, fascinating people who have been well ahead of time in their thinking and creation. Without the work of the antecessors, the successors wouldn’t have achieved their work and so on and so on. It is all about cultural development. However, Manuela is very fascinated by the work of Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava breaks conventional boundaries with his “thought experiences”. He is an artist and engineer who bridges art and nature in a way that is bold in its thinking and ingenious in its making. It seems that he not only imagines buildings that are bird-like, he builds them. When you look at his bridges you sometimes have the feeling they not only look like birds, they even move like them. Since I went to the Viennese Academy of Applied Arts, I have been passionate about the rebellious movement of the Viennese Jugendstil. The Viennese Secession by Karl Maria Olbricht remains one of my favourite architectural buildings. When we think of an illumination project, which sticks in our minds, both of us have been thinking about the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which is a very brave way of lighting such a traditional characteristic monument of Paris.
Do you have favourite materials that you return to again and again? PS: Our favourite material is metal. All KAIA products have brass as the base material, because it allows the application of a variety of different finishes. KAIA is one of the few lighting manufacturers, which still applies the traditional craftsmanship of metal plating; the brass will be plated to a nickel, chrome, gold, platinum or copper finish or just polished or brushed and lacquered to shine in its natural brass colour. All KAIA lighting objects are fabricated in workshops in or around Vienna. The craftsmen are exceptional, and masters in their work, for instance one of them is making the timpani for the Viennese Philharmonic or many orchestras in the world for centuries. Their workshops are established family businesses, which have been into metal work since the beginning of the 20th Century. Can you describe your latest collection? PS: The latest collection is the SEU lighting object. The usual fascination of any crystal chandelier is the diffusion of the light into its spectral colours. With the SEU light we achieve with the most simple and pure design the same attraction of the light diffusion in a not conventional way. The glass crystals are filled into a tube, the bulb is hidden behind the tube, but the sparkle and shine effect is the same. The SEU light is the crystal chandelier made for our more minimalistic, contemporary living space with the feeling of luxury and glamour.
Which do you think is the most important element of a light – form or function? PS: Both are important elements and they are the result of the design process. The design process in my world is both a complete circle and a continuous journey with beginnings and endings. The result is the design, equivalent of a journey: with the lights off – the aesthetic object, with the light on – the value of its function.
What’s next for the company, more expansion perhaps?
Do you work with energy efficient light sources as a matter of choice?
MS: Moving to London has been a massive expansion for KAIA. The next step is to get a more established brand for the retail market, and also focus on projects with UK lighting planners, architects and interior designers.
MS: We are in constant research of new light sources. For instance we work very closely with an LED bulb manufacturer to develop the ideal light bulb for some of our existing lighting objects, but we are also in constant search of new technology for our new product designs.
Do you each have a favourite piece/collection? What is it & why that one?
What is your favourite light source – and why?

Year by year passed by, our children were born in London and go to school here, so over time, London became home for us, really. Is it difficult to work so far from one another, or is physical closeness not something you need in order to keep the company moving forward? MS: No, it is not difficult to work so far from one another because we work as a team. Teamwork for us does not mean that we work physically next to each other every day. We both have our core tasks, which are our areas of expertise and we trust each other. The achievement of each of us is the team result. Still we are on skype every day and we meet every other month either in London or Vienna to have long discussions about strategic questions, new design ideas, clients or just brainstorm about thousands of other things in life.
We met through a mutual friend, and discovered a shared passion for architecture and art
How inter-twined are your roles? MS: Peter is the designer and is looking after our workshop, so his work is design and fabrication focused. I am the managing director, responsible for sales and marketing. I am also in very close contact with the clients, and I view myself as the ambassador of Peter’s design statement.
PS: Our favourite light source is the simplest one: fire. We all know about the fascination of bonfires and open fireplaces and this is why I decided to have a fire range with KAIA. A similar fascination in terms of electric light has a tube filament or the Edison filament bulb. With the clear incandescent tube with our most popular LIA, NEA, EON and LIS line you see the glowing filament, which has an analogy to open fire. Nowadays you will either see LED dots or white and opal light bulb tubes. The colour temperature between incandescent and LED bulbs gets better and better. It is amazing what developments the LED technology has done in the recent years, but there is still a work in progress!
Can you each describe one another’s personality? MS: I would describe Peter as a perfectionist, who has very high moral principles and is an extremely honest person with great integrity. He is visionary and very driven by his visions and ideas and more importantly he is really passionate and uncompromising about it. He is also disciplined, has good stamina and a really high intrinsic self-motivation. He is great fun to work with and I really love his outside-of-the-box thinking and sticking to his principles.
What has been the most difficult commission you’ve undertaken, both logistically and from a design viewpoint?
PS: Manuela has a warm, but also very determined personality. She is very open and flexible and great fun to work with, because she can laugh about herself and always looks at the bright side of life. She is also extremely ambitious, hard working and has a great ability to work under pressure. I am sometimes surprised how she manages work and family life, so she must be great in setting the right priorities and have a good time management. She is clear thinking, focused and yet practical about the execution of any of my visions and ideas.
MS: From a design viewpoint the most challenging design process for Peter was the INU light. The INU is an object where the eight corners of a cube are replaced by a globe light bulb. However, the filament of the light bulb is inside the cube and you will only see a quarter of the glass sphere at the outside. The six faces of the cube are merely there to reflect the surrounding but they will not reflect the light. The astonishing thing about INU is that you have a lighting object, where the lighting source is really trapped inside the cube shape. Manuela, can we ask why you’ve made London your home? MS: I moved to London nine years ago primarily because of my husband, who has been living in London for three years already; also I got offered a very attractive position in the financial industry. However, having the choice to live in a vibrant international city like London, who wouldn’t love to just do it?

Ledzworld has announced an agreement with Maxtek to expand manufacturing capacity for its main product lines to 10 million units per year, in order to accommodate sales in Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. ‘The outstanding market response for Ledzworld’s high-performance, no compromise, LED products has necessitated the need for a high-quality manufacturing partner,’ explained Ken Chakravarti, managing director and CTO. ‘Maxtek’s extensive experience in volume-producing LED lamps for the consumer markets as well as its strong manufacturing design capabilities will ensure that we can scale up quickly to meet increasing demand from leading lighting brands and large projects.’ Under the terms of the agreement, Maxtek will manufacture a significant part of the Ledzworld ODM product ranges for its global customers, in a dedicated manufacturing facility. Furthermore, the two companies will undertake joint ODM sales activities with global lighting brands and collaborate on large projects. ‘The joint sales activities with Maxtek will open up many new customer channels where our premium professional products can perfectly complement the existing consumer products already offered in large volumes by Maxtek,’ added Chakravarti.
EMTO has been appointed as a UK and European distributor for Shenzen-based Foreground. MD, Wes Matthews commented: ‘The time is right to diversify and move the company forward, and our intention is to establish the Foreground brand as a good-looking, robustly built and reliable product range that is practical and easy to use for all types of applications.’ Foreground has products that are ideal for both installation (LimboLED) and the touring/rental and staging markets (MamboLED), and EMTO plans to actively market to both. In addition to sales, there will be rental stock available via EMTO. Matthews added: ‘In a market awash with LED screen products, I initially sought something different, good quality and reliable for my own design and installation projects. However I was so impressed with Foreground’s products and their infrastructure, that I see real market potential.’ Matthews, who anticipated an increasing convergence between lighting and video some time ago, thinks it’s a good time to introduce a new brand to the market. ‘We share the same core values, and I am looking forward to a long and successful working relationship between Foreground and EMTO,’ he concluded.
THE QUESTIONS, ANSWERED The National Lighting Product Information Program (NLPIP) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center has released its latest publication, Lighting Answers: Plasma Lighting Systems. Plasma systems are emerging in the marketplace primarily for high-bay and outdoor lighting applications, and Lighting Answers: Plasma Lighting Systems provides straightforward information on performance characteristics, operating orientation, dimming, warm-up and restrike times, electromagnetic compatibility, and ultraviolet radiation. The report details findings from NLPIP’s study of plasma lighting systems, conducted from 2012 to 2013, and responses from a survey of more than 300 lighting specifiers, who provided opinions on the application of plasma lighting systems and information on any installations they had evaluated. ‘NLPIP’s mission is to rapidly provide the best information available on energy-efficient lighting products,’ explained Leora Radetsky, LRC research scientist, principal investigator, and author of the report. ‘This plasma lighting systems report provides independent, objective and reliable information not found elsewhere that is critical for specifiers, electric utilities, and others involved with lighting technologies to understand how best to incorporate this emerging technology.’
HOSPITAL LIGHTING UPGRADE The Royal United Hospital (RUH), Bath has successfully bid for £1.7m to upgrade lighting throughout its premises. The money will come from the Department of Health, which awarded the RUH a share of its £50m Carbon Efficiency Fund, to install Philips’ energy efficient LED solutions. The new lights should enable savings on electricity in the region of £400,000 a year. Howard Jones, director of estates and facilities, said: ‘This is great news - not only will it improve the experience for our patients, but everyone who comes to the RUH will notice the difference. ‘Better lighting will make clinical examination of patients much easier, and also provide improved visibility for our cleaners. Along with brightening the hospital up, we will be reducing our carbon footprint and saving a considerable sum of money on energy every year, which we will be able to re-direct into improving patient care. ‘We have already taken some steps forward to improve lighting, such as upgraded car park and street lighting, and better lighting in some of our corridors. We have also introduced LEDs into some clinical areas, such as our cardiac ward and the dermatology department, but this money will enable us to roll out lighting improvements right across the hospital. Without this award we simply wouldn’t have been able to do this work.’ The new lighting will be installed by April 2014.
AC/DC divide US-based Lynk Labs has formed a strategic partnership with Thomas Research Products to expand the availability of Lynk’s AC LED technology to OEMs. According to Lynk, the companies are collaborating on design, engineering, product development and manufacturing resources, to deliver a broad range of co-branded solutions.‘Lynk Labs has invested substantial capital and time to create the AC LED industry,’ said Chick Huber, Lynk Labs VP of business development. ‘Since the days of the early LED and OLED conferences, AC has faced strong resistance from the DC LED community. Not only is AC LED now an established market segment, but one seeing rapid and substantial growth. We’re excited that this new partnership brings TRP’s manufacturing strength and broad distribution reach to our AC LED offering.’

hether you’re lighting a 21st Century mega tower in Kuala Lumpur or a three-hundred-yearold building façade in downtown Vienna, there are certain unassailable principles that need to be followed in order to highlight, rather than overpower, its features. Kevan Shaw of KSLD explained the science behind lighting buildings: ‘People think that stone, brick or iron structures are simple and straightforward and that almost any light thrown will do to make them visible at night. ‘We see sodium and cold metal halide change warm, complex, textured materials, rendered as flat monochrome. Why not consider the qualities of colour and texture, and use good colour rendering sources? ‘We also prefer warmer, rather than cold light at night. The concept that cold light is like moonlight is just wrong! Moonlight is a full spectrum light and only appears cool as, at normal low moonlight levels, we cannot perceive colour.’ He continued: ‘For texture and detail, close offset lighting works; floodlighting at any distance just flattens out the building. ‘Also consider lighting the shape, form and details with small, carefully placed light sources. This can allow detail normally invisible to be brought out and create a completely different experience of a building at night compared to daytime.’ When it comes to colour, the general thinking appears similar. Valère Huart-Gyors, at French architectural LED lighting specialist, Ayrton suggested: ‘When using colours for exterior lighting, especially when highlighting the architectural features of an historic building, it is very important to be careful to draw out the beauty of the architecture and not subsume it beneath a multitude of colours,’ External lighting using Ayrton’s LED fittings has been undertaken by the local authority at one of the most famous monuments in Lyon the Palais de Justice de Lyon - which now features an array of LED lighting fixtures to accentuate its architectural magnificence. Ayrton has provided fixed installations for a number of historic monuments, of which the Palais de Justice is the latest. Huart-Gyors continued: ‘Thanks to the talent of lighting designer, Jerome Donna, the lighting design for the courthouse of Lyon uses colour to magnify and enhance the fine architectural features, not flatten them.’ C LAS S I C AL LI NE S
Inaugurated in 1847 and referred to as the ‘palace of the twenty-four columns’, the neo-classical building was classified as a historical monument by the French in 1996. To show its spectacular facade to best advantage, lighting designer Jerome Donna from the public lighting department of the City of Lyon chose a selection of Ayrton
The lighting design for the courthouse of Lyon uses colour to magnify and enhance the fine architectural features, not flatten them fixtures that should provide a permanent, highly visible landmark for years to come. ‘By using a single colour at a time, Donna’s design helps concentrate the attention on the architecture rather than the lighting,’ explained Huart-Gyors. ‘Skilful use of back and side lighting draws the focus to the columns, which are the major architectural feature of the façade. The concentration of light at the bottom of the columns, fading smoothly as it washes towards the top, lends further sculptural interest and prevents a flattening effect.’ Each of the building colonnade’s twenty-four Corinthian columns has been front-lit by a single Arcaline2 3G 100 and flanked by two Arcaline2 3G 50s to provide side lighting. A single IceColor 250 3G uplighter behind each column is used as backlighting to wash the walls and delineate each column. Finally, the details of the upper levels of the portico are defined using both Arcaline2 3G and IceColor 250 3G to provide smooth, colour-constant washes. In total 140 Arcaline2 3G 50, 24 Arcaline2 3G 100 and 28 Ice color 250 3G were installed, all of which are controlled by 968 channels of DMX. The installation uses white light throughout the main part of the year but, as all the fittings use RGBW LEDs, the scheme can be changed during the world-famous December Lyon Festival of Lights, which has taken place annually since 1852, and currently attracts four million visitors to the city. ‘The mood and focus can be altered from the daytime perception by using the lighting to reveal some part of the building, which does not draw the attention during the daylight,’ added HuartGyors. ‘For example, the upper façade might appear flat in open sunlight, yet the lighting delineates the architectural features to make them a point of interest at night.’ CH A N GIN G USES
Bleaching of a building’s architectural elements is often a problem. However: ‘In terms of avoiding it from introduced light sources, LEDs with low to no ultra-violet spectrum are the best way to avoid this,’ explained Ben Dickmann, product manager for Iluminarc and Chauvet Professional. ‘So what light source works best with particular finishes, such as natural stone, brick or wood? ‘It’s a matter of design style and preference,’ suggested Dickmann, ‘and what the application is (wall grazing vs flood, etc.). ‘If you are looking

The lights have been used to dress all four levels of the building exterior in beautiful, saturated washes to accentuate the texture of a surface, lighting from an extreme angle (grazing) works best, and creates shadows that give depth and dimension to the surface. ‘We, of course, recommend LED for its energy efficiency, low maintenance and ability to dynamically change colour. Again, there is no best here; as a blanket answer it all depends on what the application is.’ On the shores of the Black Sea, in Georgia’s beautiful sub-tropical city of Batumi, a former national bank building has been completely refurbished both inside and out. To reflect its new use, and to coincide with a concert held in the square, Vladislav Turiashvili, technical director of Sound Design Studio created a whole new personality for the building by permanently lighting the facades to resemble a fairytale castle. Fittings from US-based Chauvet were selected for the project, comprising both COLORado 3p IP and COLORado 1 IP fixtures. Both models carry an IP 66 rating, and are designed to withstand the harshest weather conditions, making them ideal for this permanent outdoor installation in a climate where showers are frequent all year long. The lights have been used to dress all four levels of the building exterior in beautiful, saturated washes. The fixtures have been programmed to automatically start up when ambient light gets low. Sound Design Studio, based in Tbilisi, worked with local lighting company, Adjarganateba to complete the entire installation in only six days. The tight deadlines were in place to meet a scheduled concert held in Era Square. ‘I was pleasantly surprised with how these lights perform,’ said Turiashvili. ‘Everyone agrees that this is the brightest building in Georgia. ‘You can easily see how it stands out from the background of other lit buildings in Era Square.

From the beginning, nobody believed these fixtures were that powerful,’ he added. More COLORado 1 IP fittings have been used for their outdoor wall washing capabilities – this time in Puerto Rico. The walls of the majestic 16th Century fortress at Castillo San Felipe del Morro became the backdrop for a two-day concert and recording session by Greek composer and performer, Yanni. ‘The concept was to illuminate the wall of El Morro, as the fort was the main part of the scenography,’ explained lighting designer, Bud Horowitz. ‘The advantage of working with Chauvet’s LED products was the ability to play with colours and see what worked best with the wall.’ Once used as observation and defense points, carved niches housed thirty COLORado 1 IP wash lights; ‘which gave dimension and worked well with the stone,’ said Horowitz. ‘The walls are made of dark rock, and absorbed a lot of light,’ added lighting designer, Edward Aviles. ‘So, we needed very bright fixtures to help bring out the texture of the wall and to light them up.’ Twelve COLOrado 3p IP, nine COLORado Ridge IP, and five COLORado Range IP wash lights illuminated about 700 feet of the rocky wall. ‘My favorite fixture is the Range IP,’ Aviles said. ‘We were able to cover a large area with just five fixtures.’ When it comes to lighting particularly old or important building facades, LDs need to tread carefully, as Dickman explained: ‘LDs need to have an intimate knowledge of the desires of the owner of the property, and if there are any restrictions or special permitting needed to retrofit historical properties. ‘From a design point of view, the lighting designer needs to consider if it is aesthetically pleasing - or even appropriate - to light a historical structure in say, bold colours. While vivid colours may be appropriate for an Art Deco-style structure, it may not work well on a Gothic church,’ he advised.

GUIDING LIGHT
Religious buildings have historically been lit to welcome the faithful to prayer – the proverbial guiding light – but some of the world’s most beautiful religious buildings are illuminated to provide a landmark for all to enjoy. In the Saguenay area of Jonquiere, Québec, to mark the centenary of St Dominique Church, the historical landmark underwent a lighting beautification process. Eighty IP-rated Iluminarc fixtures dramatically transform the façade of the church at dusk, allowing it to stand out from the surrounding buildings. ‘The fixtures are exceptionally bright and deliver rich saturated colours, as well as even and soft pastel colours,’ commented Serge Lachance of LSM Ambiocréateurs, the company commissioned to design and install the lighting. Rated IP67, 52 Ilumipod 42 IP solutions, 26 Ilumipod 18 IP fixtures, and two Ilumiline 36 IP linear lights drench the towers and the middle section in strong colour, highlighting the windows across the entire façade. The upper section of the towers is enhanced by variable white versions of the Ilumipod 42 IP and Ilumipod 18 IP fixtures. Reliability and resistance to harsh weather conditions were determining factors in selecting the luminaires. ‘Iluminarc offered the adequate range of products, as well as optional optics choices,’ Lachance said. ‘Also, they are all UL- and CSA-certified.’ A particular challenge during installation was the very cold winter temperatures. ‘The installation was completed during November, when temperatures reached 0°F with the wind chill factor, and winds reaching gusts of 60 miles per hour,’ Lachance explained. ‘The church is a historical building, whereby attaching lighting fixtures, as well as electrical conduit to the structure had to be done with care as to minimise any visual effects.’ Shaw agreed, commenting: ‘Dealing with historic structures requires a lot of care over placing and fixing lights and wiring, so as not to damage the historic fabric or add things that will be obtrusive and distracting in the daytime’.
CASE STUDY For one artist, the idea wasn’t to highlight the external façade, so much as to allow a glimpse of what could be going on inside. In Brussels, lighting design firm Radiance35, in collaboration with the ZimmerFrei artists’ collective, used the power of light to create Through the Walls, an award-winning, artistic lighting installation in the Saint-Jacques district of the city, one of the best-preserved medieval communities in Europe. The artist, Anna de Mannicor wanted to project imaginary openings onto the facades of the local buildings, in order to engage the curiosity and imagination of those walking by and help them envision the present day lives going on behind the district’s beautiful medieval building facades. The designers at Radiance35 projected 20 custom glass gobos throughout the neighbourhood to highlight the district’s architectural identity, attract attention and encourage visitors to explore the area, and consider living or working in one of the buildings. ‘The greatest challenge was creating clear, crisp projections of fine-detailed
images for a permanent installation in an urban environment,’ explained Isabelle Corten, lighting designer for Radiance35. ‘Most of the fixtures had oblique projection angles, which necessitated significant keystone correction. The professionals at Rosco calculated and implemented the proper modifications to the gobos perfectly, so that the artists’ original artwork was rendered properly on the buildings.’ Through the Walls won two awards, including the Special Jury Award for the Association of French Lighting Designers, as well as recognition from the Master of Public Work awarded by the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.

Of course, not all famous or important buildings being lit externally are as old as the Puerto Rica citadel or as beautiful as Lyon’s Palais de Justice. Sometimes, colour saturation, pure and simple, is the aim. The recent International Fleet Review, which commemorated the centenary of the first Royal Australian Navy fleet entry into Sydney Harbour culminated in a spectacular pyrotechnics and lightshow consisting of 30 minutes of complex, highly choreographed fireworks, projection, lighting and live action centered around Sydney Opera House and the harbour area. Fat Sound was contracted to light the Royal Australian Navy building for the event, and director, Ray Eberle decided that the Chauvet Professional COLORado 4 IP ticked all the boxes in terms of suitable colour saturation, build
quality, IP rating and output. He believed: ‘ it was no brainer, the COLORado 4 IP worked perfect on lighting the job at hand, lighting the exterior of the Royal Australian Navy building and events inside the facility’. The outdoor-rated, linear wash light features four powerful 40-watt quad-coloured RGBW LEDs. The incorporation of white LEDs has the effect of widening the colour palette, while 15-degree lenses produce a powerful punch of homogenised colour. The final word on the subject goes to Shaw, who said: ‘Lighting carefully applied is more than just nighttime illumination or identity, it is a tool that can be story telling or interpretive of the building’s history and structure’.

VENETIAN CLASS With a sensitive lighting upgrade, the magical city of Venice has achieved a milestone in energy efficiency without compromising its nighttime character
rom the Piazza San Marco to Caffè Florian, the Doge’s Palace to the Teatro La Fenice, Venice is a living, breathing time capsule, so any changes to the fabric of the city have to be approached with care. All along the canal-ways and around the famous Piazza San Marco in Venice, vintage luminaires have been upgraded to LED lighting in a bid to reduce energy use by 80 percent, but importantly, it’s been done with sensitivity, maintaining the look and feel of a bygone era prized by Venetians and visitors alike. Venice has always sold itself as a city for lovers. An evening spent traveling along the Canal Grande or strolling through the Piazza San Marco is typically enhanced by the warm glow
from the city’s antique luminaries, which project light on the captivating waterways and stunning architecture found everywhere you look. So when it came time to upgrade to a more energy-efficient lighting solution, Venetians and historians, including the Commission for the Architectural and Landscape Heritage, got involved to ensure the quality of the lighting was preserved. Italian-based Litek was commissioned to undertake the transition of the city to energy efficient lighting, and its Custom Service division decided on Philips Lumileds - but only after four years of product testing! ‘After hard tests on site, we determined that Philips Lumileds LEDs were the right choice for this project, not only for their LED capabilities, but to preserve the unique light

The light quality has been precisely replicated, but with greater reliability and dramatically improved efficiency and wonder of Venice,’ explained Fabio Facchini, Litek CEO. In partnering with Philips Lumileds, Litek was able to deliver LED lighting that was 80 per cent more efficient, yet maintained the light quality, lumen output and colour temperature of the previous mercury discharge lamp technology. Throughout Venice, a total of 7,000 luminaries were retrofitted with LED solutions. In addition to realising the energy savings of 81.4 percent and accompanying reduction in CO2 emissions, the lumen maintenance lifetime of the LED fixtures is expected to be 50,000 hours - five times longer than the mercury discharge lamp technology. On average, the lights are illuminated for 11 hours a day, 4,200 hours a year. The light quality has been precisely replicated, but with greater reliability and dramatically improved efficiency. PIA ZZA SA N MA RCO
The Piazza San Marco was designed for people, and indeed has functioned as a social, political, and religious centre for centuries. This vast public space in the heart of Venice assumed its present form during the Renaissance. ‘In the evenings or at night, one’s perception of the notable architectural structures in the Piazza, including the Basilica de San Marco, the Torre dell’Orologio [clock tower] and the Palazzo Ducale, is keenly affected by the lighting,’ commented Mark van den Berg, director of marketing at Philips Lumileds. ‘For this reason, it became necessary to maintain the exact light quality that was delivered by the mercury discharge lamps of the past, when they were replaced by energy-efficient LED lamps.’ In the Piazza, post-top luminaries were fitted with LUXEON K high-lumen-density arrays with customised optics, specifically designed by Litek for high efficiency, ease of use, and low maintenance. Though the initial consultation on the project began way back in 2008, installation was rapid once it started, with all fixtures in the Piazza changed out within four months. Quite a challenge, when you discover that meant a total of 6,000 post-top luminaries all had to be changed to warm white (3000K correlated colour temperature, CCT) LEDs with a CRI of 80. The banks of the Canal Grande are flanked by buildings, which date from the 13th to the 18th Centuries. Along the Canal, across the Accademia Bridge and in the Rialto shopping area, a second type of luminaire has been used in the past, which also utilised halogen lamps. The retrofit LED luminaries incorporate LUXEON M high-flux-density emitters that have been optimised for high efficiency and consistent colour point. When the project was completed, more than 1,000 luminaries in these areas had been retrofitted with LED emitters, again with a CCT of 3000K and a CRI of 80. According to the local utility company, the overall lighting replacement project realised a power reduction of 75 kW annually.

The hotel guest ‘must-have’ list grows almost daily. So what about lighting? What part does lighting really play in the guest decision whether to book or pass? And in the current economic climate, is anyone brave enough to take the risk? Many more guests are now throwing environmental issues into the mix when making a choice of where to stay or eat, so with competition at its fiercest for decades, a chic, luxury or designer tag is no longer enough.

analysis undertaken by Truelux proposed LED lighting over traditional lamps. From the main lobby to restaurants, bars, atriums and convention centre, it was imperative that the luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere of the existing lighting system was maintained. However, as many of the lights are operating 24-hours a day, it was equally imperative that the replacements offer the largest saving and fastest payback possible. Truelux’s analysis submitted that by changing all of the lighting to LED, there would be a potential 77 per cent reduction in energy costs, making payback possible in under a year – and that wasn’t taking into account the reduced maintenance and replacement costs over the lifetime of the LEDs. We searched intensively for a way to combine increased control with minimum installation disruption

The Marriott Hotel in Frankfurt has recently undergone a refurbishment, which provided the opportunity to bring in the latest lighting and lighting control technology. For Marriott’s management, key to the refurbishment was the ability to continue day-to-day operation with minimal impact on guests. The wireless nature of Lutron’s retrofit solution, Energi TriPak, made it possible to fit out all 588 rooms with minimal noise or disturbance. Hansjörg Hefel, general manager of the hotel, commented: ‘Today’s guest expects different standards from a hotel room than as recently as 10 years ago. This refurbishment was undertaken, not only to meet those requirements, but to future-proof our hotel for many years to come.’
When it came to the lighting, the Marriott team wanted to incorporate increased lighting control in each of the bedrooms, including full room control from the bed area, as well as the entrance. They also needed to find a way of incorporating it with minimum disruption. Hefel explained: ‘We searched intensively for a way to combine increased control with minimum installation disruption. In the end, we decided on Lutron’s wireless solution, as this gave us the possibility to renovate the rooms, with minimum noise emissions and to continue business as usual on the remaining floors. Following a review of the first installation, approval was given then and there for the rest of the rooms, as we saw the speed and efficiency of this light control solution.’ Each of the hotel rooms had three circuits in existence; the bathroom, entrance area and floor-standing lamp by the bed. There were three standard 10A switches at the entrance to control the lighting in the room, with no overall control from the bedside. Each room was retrofitted with three Lutron PowPaks; one in the suspended ceiling in the bathroom, another in the AC box at the entrance and a final one under the bed to enable wiring to the floor lamp. Pico keypads were used to replace the existing light switches, their controllers programmed to talk to one or more of the PowPaks, wirelessly. Martin Jarzembinski, CEO of MJD, the project’s lighting designer, explained: ‘Every switch can be programmed individually. This freedom, in terms of the lighting design, is particularly beneficial for creating a solution that meets the client’s requirements, to the letter.’ Stephan Saremba, director of sales E&A at Lutron, added: ‘As demonstrated by the Marriott Hotel, the Energi TriPak system is perfectly suited for modernising existing lighting in rooms with minimum effort; meaning less expense for the Marriott and minimum disruption for guests.’ In a customer facing industry, feedback is key to a new scheme’s success. So far, the response has been excellent, as Hefel agreed: ‘We made just the right decision. The positive feedback from guests who have tried out the newly refurbished rooms proves this. They are delighted with the measures we have introduced to bring the rooms up to a new standard of excellence.’

EAT W ELL
Diners too are taking the ethical high ground when it comes to their choice of eatery, and woe betide the restaurateur who doesn’t source his produce locally and keep his energy usage down. With 360-degree panoramic views over the Dutch Zeeland’s westernmost point, De Vierbannen blends sustainable design and dining - with stunning results. The venue has been designed to provide guests with a gourmet menu and the wonderful vistas of the surrounding coastline. To maximise the views, floor to ceiling glazing was installed, which created both an opportunity and a challenge for the lighting designer, Frans Kroonen from Sight Light BV: ‘In most eateries, the lighting is focused around maximising the interior dining experience; however at the De Vierbannen Brasserie, our remit was to not only produce a highly energy efficient lighting scheme, but maximise the diner’s view of the panoramic waterways around both the brasserie and restaurant areas.’ With this in mind, Sight Light BV needed to use the most energy efficient lamp technology available that set the mood and minimised glare on the vast areas of glass. Megaman’s axial geometry and Thermal Conductive Highway (TCH) technology allowed the team to achieve precise light control using LED AR111 lamps. These were chosen for use throughout the upper and lower bars, restaurant and conference rooms. In total, 216 Megaman LED 10W G53 AR111 45-degree 2800k dimmable reflectors were used throughout the brasserie, housed in Orbit Lighting’s bespoke fixtures. Whether lit for day or night, de Vierbannen’s new lighting scheme is energy efficient and doesn’t detract from the panoramic views surrounding it. So it’s a win-win for the diners.

Ansorg has implemented a lighting concept for Indonesia’s newest department store
the renowned department store and temple of all things fashion-oriented has arrived on the Indonesian retail horizon. At the busy Pacific Place mall in central Jakarta, a vast store has been created for those who worship at the altar of fashion. Both the outside design and the store concept were developed by architect, Plajer & Franz with the idea of transporting a touch of Parisian lifestyle to Indonesia. The department store showcases more than 300 brands and a huge amount of Parisian chic over an area of 12,000sq metres across four floors. The design concept - one day in Paris - includes typical Parisian elements, such as models of the

Eiffel Tower, house façades and street lamps, which are used consistently throughout the store. The in-store lighting concept, implemented by Ansorg, generates a friendly, bright and inviting atmosphere for shoppers and browsers alike, and really helps to set the scene for the goods in an exciting and dynamic way. As a consistent lighting solution, Ansorg’s Lightstripe modular system has been utilised, equipped with two recessed accent spotlights for a calm and uncluttered ceiling look. By means of the use of very narrowbeam reflectors a lighting mood rich in accents is obtained that underlines the colour, variety and high quality of the goods on display. The use of lamps with different wattages allows the outer

area of the store to be visually distinct from the interior section. In sub-areas, such as the entrance or the store windows, in addition to the Lightstripe system, gimbal-mounted recessed Cardo spotlights and Velo power track-mounted spotlights have been used. The lighting puts the necessary final gloss on the modern department store, and reflects the Galeries Lafayette “mix and match” philosophy as an important integrative component of the store design.

Programmed to save
A relocation to new premises has given a Berkshire-based company the chance to make serious savings new headquarters building offered the perfect opportunity for software construction company, COINS to improve its energy efficiency and reduce its day-to-day running costs. COINS’ priority was to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from its new premises in Slough, and at the same time increase energy efficiency wherever possible. Having taken on a new, larger facility, the company approached Advance International to find out what its options were to make savings on the lighting element of its energy usage. As part of the brief, the company wanted an open office layout, designed to encourage team building, which the lighting needed to reflect.
Once Advance Lighting had assessed the facility, it was clear that an energy efficient replacement LED scheme would be the ideal solution for COINS. The benefits of a retrofit scheme meant that no additional building work was required to change over to LED lighting, and the lighting energy consumption would be reduced by as much as 50 per cent. Low maintenance would also prove to be an advantage, together with the reduction in dust and UV, creating a healthier office environment for the company’s employees. TH E SOLUTION
After carefully studying the brief, Advance Lighting proposed a total replacement solution of all lighting throughout the headquarters building, to include offices, communal spaces,
January 2014 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
kitchen areas and stairway lighting. The replacement included a selection of the company’s products, which demonstrate their versatility. These included square and emergency LED light panels, adjustable LED down lighters, circular LED fittings and direct replacement tubes. The LED replacement has produced direct energy saving costs for the lighting of the expected 50 per cent, with a return on investment expected in just four years, and importantly, a significant carbon reduction. Following the upgrade, the company was able to relocate to its new premises on schedule and – importantly - on budget.

highlight NEW COLLECTION TARGETS Compulsory collection targets within WEEE compliance schemes will be coming into force this month, following the Government’s response to the re-cast WEEE directive consultation. According to Dexreco, which plays a key role in lighting disposal, the compulsory collection targets will be introduced under plans to restructure the process in which electronic goods producers pay for the treatment of e-waste. It will now be compulsory for all producers to join a producers’ compliance scheme, unless they fall below a certain standard, which exempts producers that place less then five tonnes each year. Each compliance scheme will have a set target in categories of electrical and electronic equipment, such as lighting recycling, which is placed onto the market. This target will be in proportion to the UK’s target and the total market share of their members during the previous year. The disposal of fluorescent lights is among the e-waste discussed during the consultation.

LED and PC board; optics or reflectors; heat sink with heat transfer agent; power supply and connector; and controls, if applicable. ORIGIN A L SYSTEM
Meinolf Gerber, field application engineer, lighting at Arrow Europe discusses small LEDs with a huge task: hall lighting he light emitting capabilities of LEDs have grown to such an extent that they can now be considered for even the most demanding applications. One example is hall lighting, commonly known as high bay lighting, where the interior of industrial buildings is illuminated by units seven metres or more above the floor. Here we illustrate how the lighting performance of a traditional ceramic discharge metal-halide (CDM) high bay lamp can be replicated using an LED-based solution. This entails looking at the following elements of a LED lighting system:
January 2014 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
The original system is a 150W CDM-T lamp, which produces 10800 lumen, with a colour temperature of 4200 Kelvin, and a Colour Rendering Index (CRI) Ra of 86. However, in a typical high bay lamp, only about 58 per cent of the light actually leaves the lamp, which means that the target usable output of our LED replacement is 6250 lumen. In order to optimally distribute the lighting for this application, we should first consider the correct selection of a lens. Lamps used for high bay lighting are fitted against the ceiling in a grid, forming a chequerboard pattern. Ledil has developed a high bay lens family for this arrangement. The square field of light generates a regular pattern without differences in light intensity. The optical system is designed for several LEDs in each case, which reduces both cost and installation effort. Quadruple optics, with 2x2 lenses in a square configuration are suitable for this project. The efficiency of the lenses is 87 per cent. A solution, such as the XT-E optical system by Cree, offers very high luminous flux at low cost. The Cree Product Characterization Tool (PCT) can assist in finding a suitable configuration. A number of parameters are required in the table. The temperature of the LED blocking layer is assumed to be 85°C during operation. This is a realistic value, even considering that
52 SP ECIALIST LIG H T IN G
A LTERN ATIV E LEN SES F OR WA LL LIGH TIN G
Users can also design their own power circuits, resulting in higher efficiency temperatures may differ in practice. Groups of four LEDs are used in the calculation to match the quad-clustered lenses. The specification of the selected LED will result in a minimum of 114 lumen. This value may be higher in practice, however, we will continue with our calculations based on the minimum. In all the rows of the calculation, which take into account the efficiency of the optics as well, the desired luminous flux of 6250 lumen is achieved or surpassed. The LED current is set at 700 mA, yielding a number of advantages. The total number of LEDs is 36, creating a field of 3 x 3 lens clusters. The arrangement is square. The LED current of 700 mA is quite conventional, simplifying the selection of power supplies. The voltage drop across a group is slightly more than 12 V, adding up to just over 36 V for three groups each in series. This is also a common value. Finally, the power consumption of the LEDs will be 77W. This is roughly half of the power required by a 150W CDM-T lamp. The LED should ideally be mounted on metal core PCBs. There are differences in properties of this material as well, not further discussed here. SPE C I AL RE ASO NS FO R T H E LED SE LE C T I O N: C RI AND LUM IN OUS F LUX
The specification of the CDM-T lamp with a CRI Ra of 86 presupposes a similar LED solution. LEDs in the market are still producing good luminous flux at minimum CRIs of 80. Since the XT-E can handle currents up to 1.5A, it is in quite a safe region at 700 mA. Other LEDs with a maximum current of 1.5A may alternatively be selected. Examples of these are the Cree XP-G or the Osram Oslon Square, which is also available with a CRI of 95. Because costs were the prime consideration here, the XT-E was selected. The other products feature better colour consistency over the beam angle, but this is of little importance in this application. The light spectrum of an LED is different and greater than that of CDM-T lamps, with the result that lower CRIs will already render colour very well.
A second type, using other lenses, is also available as an alternative to pure high bay lamps, which beam straight down. Externally identical to the aforementioned, the light beam has a different characteristic, being angled to one side. This enables it to light up walls and so may be of interest for illumination of shelves. This lens was originally developed for street lighting. H EAT SIN K A N D TH ERMA L IN TERFA CE
Even though LEDs clearly require less power to produce the same luminous flux, about 60-70 per cent of the power still remains in the LED in the form of heat. This must be dissipated to prevent overheating. The table shows calculations based on a somewhat higher current (for extra lighting) and a simplified model for a LED consuming 83W. These calculations yield the required thermal resistance of the heat sink. This should be around 0.5 Kelvin per Watt. The datasheets for heat sinks show these values. A Fischer heat sink (SK 510-160) was selected here. The dimensions ideally suit the configuration of the nine lenses and associated LEDs. The lenses create a quadratic field of 150mm x 150mm, and the heat sink then has a dimension of 160mm x 160mm. Depending on the surface quality, a suitable 3M product, such as 88xx or 8940 could be selected as the contact substance between PCB and heat sink. LED POW ER SUPPLY
Since LEDs can only deliver sustained performance when supplied with a controlled current, and as this example has three parallel circuits of 700 mA and ca. 36.6 V, a power supply of approximately 36V, delivering a constant 700 mA is needed. The requirement is for at least 77W. The nearest available power category is 100W. Standards for lamps mandate Class C under EN61000-3-2. Not many power supplies are capable of this. The Recom LED driver RACD10048 has been tested for lighting applications and provides adequate current, up to 2.1A at 48V. Three step-down DC LED drivers are configured with 48V input to power the three LED circuits. The Recom type RCD-48-0.70 will then deliver a 700 mA constant current. Users can also design their own power circuits, resulting in higher efficiency for the total system. However, this may not be practical for small batches, since approvals are very time-consuming. CON CLUSION A N D PROGN OSIS
Good results may be achieved with LEDs, even for lighting halls, provided the components are correctly selected and properly configured. LEDs therefore continue their triumphal path of conquest into new applications. Control of these lighting systems using various protocols (via wiring or wireless) is possible, and on-going improvements will continue to increase the efficiency of LEDs, power supplies and, hence, the overall systems.

Interiors UK, incorporating the Lighting Show, takes place from 19-22 January at the NEC, Birmingham. The event is dedicated to lighting professionals, and is perfectly positioned for the start of the season. With more than 500 exhibitors, it showcases new furniture and lighting products, the latest trends and of course, provides networking opportunities. Approaching all aspects of the industry, the speakers will share valuable insight with the visitors, press, buyers and designers in attendance. A new idea, the dedicated lighting stage will coincide with the re-introduction of the Lighting Show, where a fine selection of industry brands, renowned for their style and passion, will showcase their latest collections. Now in its fiftieth year, the Lighting Show will not only see the NEC transformed with the addition of a seminar theatre, VIP area and bar, but will also play host to a wealth of exhibitors, both new and returning, who will be introducing exciting products to the market. Organised by the Decorative Lighting Manufacturers and Distributors Association (DLMDA) back in 1964, a wealth or heritage runs through the veins of the show. Based in Hall 3, the 2014 edition is no different, providing a compact and perfectly formed event showcasing the latest in products and technological developments in the lighting industry. For the first time in the history of the exhibition, the Lighting Show will feature its very own seminar theatre, which will welcome some of the industry’s most knowledgeable experts for a series of informative talks. Many well-known lighting brands are set to appear, including new exhibitor, More Than Bags. Mandy Beal, co-owner, spoke of her excitement to be joining the show for the first time: ‘We’ve chosen the Lighting Show to launch our UK-made lighting range, as it is the premier specialist trade event of the year – there is always a great gathering of lighting specialists! ‘We are very much looking forward to our unique lamps and shades being seen by key buyers in the industry.’ Beal revealed that the brand will be exclusively launching a new range
of embroidered paper shades crafted from Lokta paper. Lokta is made from Daphne papyrus, a plant that can only be found at altitudes of 6500ft or more in the Himalayas. The shades are hand embroidered, and customisable according to size, shape and colour. Clifton Lighting, distributer of several world-leading lighting brands, will be returning to the Lighting Show this year. The brand plans to unveil new products to the market, including two modular ranges from Venetian brand, Metallux, which have faultless chromation and a lifetime guarantee! Clifton will also be exhibiting new ranges from fellow Italian lighting brand, Voltolina, including the Murano fitting. Also joining the stellar line-up is Scandinavian brand, Nordlux, which will be exhibiting Modular Light shades made from thick, sharply cut acrylic designed to give the look of glass. In addition, Albioncourt will be showing off its British designs, including 1200mm drum shades designed by Laura Oakes, as well as a brand new lighting range.

A former regimental barracks put to use as office space deserves a lighting scheme with a first class pedigree avid Atkinson Lighting Design (DALD) has completed the architectural lighting scheme for branding agency, venture three’s new offices at Cavalry Square, part of the former Duke of York’s Barracks. DALD had previously worked with venturethree on the SKY gallery and Back Stage bar at the 02 London, so the company was the natural choice when it came to the agency’s own office space, which it felt needed a sympathetic yet contemporary approach to the lighting design. David Atkinson worked closely alongside AB Rogers’ design team and venturethree to produce a scheme that felt comfortable to work in, but also helped tie the architectural splendour of the historic building together. The lighting design was based entirely on energy efficient light sources. The ground floor entrance, off the main

square, consists of a long arcade, so it was decided after a lengthy consultancy process with the site’s landlord and Planning department, to illuminate the space with a suspended direct/indirect T5 light source housed within a continuous extrusion. The visual impact of the thin extrusion doesn’t detract from the splendour of the vaulted arcade, but adds a contemporary linear design element. With natural daylight entering the space from the west side of the arcade it was decided to fit 4000 kelvin tubes to give the space a crisp appearance. UP IN THE ROOF
The arcade links to the ground floor office, which is lacking in natural light, so it was decided to use a combination of 600mm x 1200mm LED panels suspended above the desks fitted with 4000K LED chips. The perimeter of the space is lit by recessed 1300 lumen
62 SP ECIALIST LIG H T IN G
By limiting the amount of light sources and the careful use of different colour temperatures, the lighting scheme helps to the give the office a comfortable and spaciously enhanced quality down lights, fitted with 2700K and a wide optic of 60°. From the ground floor, a large wooden staircase leads to the first floor studio, which is also lit by recessed 1300 lumen down lights, fitted with 2700K and a medium beam angle of 40°. Choosing 2700K helps to accentuate the wooden staircase and adds warmth to the space. The first floor landing includes an alcove feature, which is lit by small baffled down lights fitted with 7.2w 3000K LED. With the first floor studio space having a pitched roof, it was decided to have two sources of light. The main source is from a series of slim 3000k 70w metal halide asymmetric up-lights, which are positioned either side of the space. To bring light to the centre of the studio, overlapping T5 lamps are housed within a slim linear extrusion, which incorporates emergency gear, suspended below the eves. The design team wanted to give the WC’s a retro, industrial feel, so IP64 encapsulated 8w T5 fluorescents were positioned above the vanity mirrors and wired with braided flexible conduit. By limiting the amount of light sources and the careful use of different colour temperatures, the lighting scheme helps to the give the office a comfortable and spaciously enhanced quality. A spokesperson from venturethree commented: ‘DALD have a great track record of transforming spaces into beautiful and emotive environments. But more importantly they recognise and understand how people use space, whether it’s to have fun in or to work in, they have a detailed knowledge of how lighting brings out the best in people. It was for this reason we asked DALD to help us with our lighting scheme early on in the project. ‘It’s hard to imagine now how our studio was before we moved in. We had a narrow glazed arcade flooded with natural light, a void sitting behind with no natural light, and a disjointed space upstairs, which was rather gloomy. ‘DALD worked closely with ARD, creating different lighting themes for each area. They have helped make the working environment within the studio a pleasure to work and spend time in.’

Ex-Or +44 (0) 1942 719229 | www.ex-or.com Ex-Or delivers 70% warehouse energy savings Ex-Or’s market-leading range of energy saving lighting solutions has been extended with the launch of Mid-Bay LightSpot PIRs, meaning there is now a full range of programmable PIR presence detection systems suitable for ceiling heights ranging from 8m up to 16m, typically found in warehouses and industrial units. Like the long-established Hi-Bay LightSpot which is optimised for heights of 12m to 16m, the new Mid-Bay LightSpot offers 360 degree movement detection, but optimised for lower heights of 8 m to 12 m. This ensures that effective presence detection with maximum energy savings can be achieved. Both Hi-Bay and Mid-Bay LightSpot allow positioning at the end of the aisle, further extending LightSpot’s energy saving capability. This is made easy with the addition of a special sensor lens mask offering more efficient detection. Energy cost savings of up to 70 per cent or more can be made in industrial and commercial warehousing and storage buildings with high ceilings. This is thanks to LightSpot’s ability to ensure the lights are never left burning needlessly in areas that have been vacated or where there is enough natural light. Both Mid-Bay and Hi-Bay LightSpot are simple to commission after installation and can be easily reconfigured in the future in response to the regularly changing operational spaces within a dynamic warehousing environment. Commissioning Ex-Or lighting controls has been made even easier with the recent introduction of the Ex-Or HP18 LightSpot handheld controller. This low cost, pocket sized remote control is simple and intuitive to use for both installers and end users. The new Mid-Bay LightSpot is available with flush or surface mountings and is compatible with DALI or DSI ballasts.

Winter wonderland In Montreal, the winning entries of Quartier des Spectacles Partnership’s fourth annual Luminothérapie competition have been used to enhance the winter visitor experience
n the Canadian city of Montreal, Place des Festivals is showcasing the metaphorical installation, Entre les rangs, designed by a multi-disciplinary team led by architecture firm, Kanva. At the same time, the eight building façades in Quartier des Spectacles used for year-round artistic video projections, will be lit throughout the Luminothérapie event by a playful series of projections called Trouve Bob, by the Champagne Club Sandwich collective. ‘We applaud the talent of the winners, who were able to see this competition’s full potential, both
for stimulating creative activity in Montreal and for creating exceptional winter experiences. ‘In Luminothérapie, Montreal has a unique platform for expression, on which a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines come together to imagine new ways of celebrating urban design, both for visitors and Montrealers,’ said Jacques Primeau, chair of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership board. ‘The Quartier des Spectacles inspires local, creative and talented artists who showcase original and daring works as part of design competitions such as Luminothérapie.

We applaud the talent of the winners, who were able to see this competition’s full potential, both for stimulating creative activity in Montreal and for creating exceptional winter experiences I would like to congratulate the winners and finalists of the competition for their contribution to the creative impetus that exemplifies our cultural metropolis,’ said Élaine Ayotte, of the Montréal Executive Committee, responsible for culture, heritage and design. ‘Luminothérapie helps to promote Montréal’s international reputation as a UNESCO City of Design, by proposing new ways to occupy and use public spaces, and by promoting Montréal know-how in the field of cultural entertainment. I invite Montrealers to discover new talents in the Quartier des spectacles this winter and to marvel at the imagination of the Montréal creative force,’ Ayotte continued.
The finalists in both competition sections were selected based on proposals submitted anonymously, in order to ensure transparency and openness to new talents. The next step, the selection of the winners, was centred on a paid presentation to the appropriate jury. THE WINNING PROJECTS Entre les rangs by Kanva, in collaboration with Udo Design, Côté Jardin, Patrick Watson, Boris Dempsey and Pierre Fournier. Thousands of flexible stems topped with white reflectors make up this large-scale urban metaphor for a wheat field in rural Quebec. The designers were inspired by the shape and arrangement of the province’s lots and rangs, the product of the land surveying system established by the French regime in New France, which still shapes today’s landscape. In the winter wind, bathed in reflected light from projectors sited in Place des Festivals, the stylised stalks wave, creating sparking effects like those of wheat swaying in a blustery country field. Trouve Bob by Champagne Club Sandwich is a large-scale animated game that uses the city as a screen. It will give Montreal’s winter the same liveliness and colour as its summer festival season by re-imagining the popular game Where’s Waldo? The eight sets of Quartier des Spectacles projection façades will light up with the fantastical world of a nutty character accompanied by an odd assortment of adorable companions.
January 2014 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
The public will be asked to find Bob, lurking somewhere in the outlandish background of the eight dynamic scenes. This city-scale game makes connections between the buildings in Quartier des Spectacles used as projection surfaces by presenting a series of animations with an exciting mix of formats, graphic compositions, colours and levels of difficulty. The Luminothérapie competition, which has two components, is aimed at presenting an interactive winter experience for visitors to Quartier des Spectacles, as well as stimulating creativity in Montreal. In the Showcase and enliven Place des Festivals component, Entre les rangs was one of five finalists chosen from 44 entries. In the second component, Design and production of video projections for the façades of Quartier des Spectacles, Trouve Bob was one of three finalists chosen from 14 proposals.
