t seems like fifteen minutes - tops - since I was extolling the advent of long, light summer evenings, and bright sparkly early mornings when sleep was impossible due to the sun bursting through curtains and blinds.
I turned my back for a quick break, and came home to darkness. However, far be it from me to crow, but regular readers may remember that just as the light evenings arrived, we had an exciting bit of lighting kit installed ‘chez nous’ – we are now the proud owners of a lighting control system that works to make our lives simpler, safer, an d hopefully, cheaper.

I can’t describe the unbridled pleasure of rolling up to the front door at stupid o’clock, punch drunk from an interminable journey home, to be greeted by a beacon of hope as we turned into the drive – the lights came on! At the time we ordered the system, I did wonder whether we’d been foolishly extravagant, but even if it doesn’t pay for itself eventually (I live in hope), the warm glow of satisfaction created by a humble light bulb sparking into life to welcome you home is … just priceless. This month sees the return of what’s arguably become the biggest lighting event in the UK calendar. So, will you be trekking off to LuxLive in the coming weeks? I’m hoping it’ll be not just a most/longest/cheapest LEDfest, but that we’ll get to see a lot more of what the technology can actually do now. For instance, Osram has managed to use advanced LED technology to create retrofit Xenon/LED front headlights for cars. Admittedly, the company has, at the time of writing, only managed to produce them for one early-model Audi, but hopefully it won’t be long before all drivers can enjoy safer nighttime conditions by being able to fit better headlights. Three cheers for lighting technology! Gill Anderson | editor

wiss watch manufacturer, Project Bucherer 1888 has inaugurated a new flagship store in Paris, almost entirely illuminated with LED. Pfarré Lighting Design required variable light levels to 4000 lux in selected areas - creating a luxury, high contrast setting to highlight the displays. Floating backlit ceiling panes visually connect the spaces, softening the overall ambience and creating an elegant atmosphere. In the windows, punchy ceramic metal halide down-lights bring out the maximum sparkle in the products, supported by evenly lit backgrounds using recessed linear LED profiles. Hidden in the base of each window, LED profiles light the outer part of the window scene. Pfarré specified recessed down-lights and wallwashers to be precisely co-ordinated with the displays; acdc’s AZETA offered flexibility, including a wall wash optic, with the security of the tilt, rotate and lock mechanisms, to keep them trained in place. A spokesman from Pfarré commented: ‘Colour temperature was also critical for us, and in order to promote a warm comfortable environment for browsing, we chose 3000K for all the lighting. The acdc secondary binning process, which ensures all LEDs are within a 2-step MacAdam ellipse, guaranteed us a high quality environment and perfect continuity throughout.’

Advances in manufacturing technology for quantum dots at Oregon State University (OSU) may soon lead to a new generation of LED lighting that produces a more user-friendly white light, while using less toxic materials, and low-cost manufacturing processes, taking advantage of simple microwave heating. The cost, environmental, and performance, improvements could finally produce solid state lighting systems that consumers really like, and could help the nation cut its lighting bill almost in half, researchers say, compared to the cost of incandescent and fluorescent lighting, still very much in evidence in the US. The same technology may also be widely incorporated into improved lighting displays, computer screens, smart phones, televisions, and other systems. A key to the advances, which have been published in the Journal of Nanoparticle Research, is use of both a ‘continuous flow’ chemical reactor, and microwave heating technology, conceptually similar to domestic microwave ovens. The continuous flow system is fast, cheap, energy efficient, and will cut manufacturing costs. And the microwave heating technology will address a problem that so far has held back wider use of these systems, which is precise control of heat needed during the process. The microwave approach will translate into development of nanoparticles that are exactly the right size, shape, and composition. ‘There are a variety of products and technologies that quantum dots can be applied to, but for mass consumer use, possibly the most important is improved LED lighting,’ said Greg Herman, associate professor and chemical engineer at OSU College of Engineering. ‘We may finally be able to produce low cost, energy efficient, LED lighting, with the soft quality of white light that people really want. ‘At the same time, this technology will use non-toxic materials, and dramatically reduce waste, which translates to lower costs and environmental protection,’ he added. Sedna Lighting created a partnership with Cardiff Racing for the Silverstone and Europe IMechE Formula Student Competition. Sedna has been supporting the budding young engineers of Cardiff University’s racing team, which took on some of the world’s elite engineering talent in a Formula One-style competition. Sean Creed of the Cardiff University Racing Team commented: ‘Previously, the lighting we had was very poor, and fluorescent, which made the tedious jobs that much more difficult.’

Shedding light on warranties What should lighting buyers be looking out for when considering LED lighting warranties?
M
HA Lighting’s MD Tom Harrison says: Confusion continues to exist around the predicted lifetime of technology that is perceived as relatively “new”, and some say “untested” in terms of product lifetime. On the one hand, that position can be challenged by LED lighting installations which are over five years old and have not been the subject of a single warranty claim. On the other, there are many “horror stories” of early fatalities which undermine LED technology in general. For lighting buyers to be sure of choosing an LED luminaire that really will live as long as the manufacturer claims, we suggest there are two vitally important criteria: • Are the claims supported with full test certification? • Are there real life examples of installations that have met those lifetime claims? In the same way we accept that an aircraft will fly for 30 years because we know that full lifetime testing has been done, and also because there is proof that they have done so, we can apply the same to the electronics in the light-engine of a LED fitting. TEST CERTIFICATION When accessing warranty statements, lighting buyers should ask LED manufacturers to provide full and complete documented evidence and certification. These include independent TEMPO test reports (Thermal, Electrical, Mechanical, Photometric, and Optical) as
16 • N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
ABOUT MHA LIGHTING
well as basic CE & IP test certificates. The TEMPO report will show the actual test time of the LED itself and the predicted life of the LED in the luminaire (LM 80 & TM 21 reports). LM-80 is an approved method for measuring the lumen output of LEDs at various temperatures in 1000-hour increments. TM-21 reports, based upon the LM80, predict the useful life of the LED in the luminaire based upon the measured temperature at its junction with the PCB. Like all electronic components, LED will both perform best – and for longer - when the junction temperature is cool. This is a factor of the drive current (which generates the heat) and heat-sinking arrangement, which dissipates it. The harder we drive the LED, the greater the lumen output, however this will be at the cost of efficacy and life. The more benignly we can drive the LED, the higher the lumen/W efficacy, the longer the
MHA Lighting is the only LED manufacturer to shine light sideways into encapsulation, avoiding direct contact with the eye and providing a safe and efficient light output. The company uses acrylic rods to amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required. This means they can use high power LEDs, draw less current and have no need to diffuse the output. Since late 2010 MHA has built a portfolio of Blue Chip commercial clients and public sector organisations, including: The Trafford Centre, GlaxoSmithKline, Manchester Metropolitan University, Scott Safety (A Tyco company), Birmingham NEC, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Airport Group, SPAR, Reckitt Benckiser, Chevron-Texaco, the NHS and various Local Authorities. lifetime and of course the higher reliability. Equally, the life and reliability of the driver itself is extended if it is running cooler in the fixture. In relation to the warranty itself, there should be no caveats. A fully certified, fully serviced warranty where the manufacturer takes full responsibility for the the product is key. If the manufacturer is asking a customer to believe the warranty claims he must surely believe it himself – and if so, then back this up by taking full responsibility, not just a promise to supply a replacement.

Lighting London In Central London, the re-development of King’s Cross has given rise to One Pancras Square, a high end office building over eight floors housing, amongst others, the head office of French fashion house, Louis Vuitton. The Grade A building has been rated BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and is installed with the latest technology to minimise its environmental impact, and reduce running costs. Widely regarded as the most space, and energy efficient, method of heating and cooling a building, chilled beam systems increase the design and sustainable potential of projects. Luxonic’s Airlux, which has been adopted for One Pancras Square, is a range of satin-lensed small nose cone, luminaires that have been specifically developed for seamless integration into chilled beam structures, to provide controllable light outputs that achieve the optimum lit environment. Supplied, as standard, with DALI dimmable control gear, the satin lens provides asymmetric upward and downward light to large open offices areas, while eliminating uncomfortable glare. Airlux has been a popular choice for MSCB installations in commercial office projects such as One Pancras Square, primarily for its efficient lighting distribution and sustainability. The advanced technology of the Airlux is well matched to the environmental credentials of the building development. Jennings, a property management company with business parks in South Oxfordshire, has refurbished Hampden House, a serviced office building in Chalgrove, utilising energy-efficient LED lighting from Zeta. A key part of the refurbishment was to replace the energy-hungry four-tube fluorescent ceiling fittings throughout the building with a more effective, aesthetically pleasing, and eco-saving, alternative. Hampden House comprises 28 purpose-built offices, ranging from 230sq ft to 1,000sq ft, as well as meeting rooms and a main reception area. ‘We did a lot of research into the new lighting we wanted,’ explained Jennings’ commercial manager, Chris Williams. ‘The requirement to provide lighting for ourselves, as well as for a number of different tenant businesses, which rent offices from us, meant that we had to get it right, and meet the needs of a diverse set of people.’ Zeta recommended its Ultra Slim Ceiling Panels, in bespoke sizes after reconfiguring the existing setup, reducing the number of panels in some offices, and repositioning the replacements to deliver better illumination where it was most needed. As part of its consultative approach, Zeta also engaged with the tenants, adapting the colour temperatures from warm to cool, and customising it at the levels which best suited the occupants. ‘The new lights are great; they took a few days to get used to, as the light from them is so much brighter,’ enthused Williams. Prior to the refurbishment, Hampden House had luminaires with built-in silver louvres. ‘Many businesses request that lighting is Cat 1 or Cat 2 compliant, which is why louvres feature heavily within office lighting solutions, due to their glare reducing features,’ explained Phil Shadbolt, Chairman and CEO, Zeta Specialist Lighting. ‘But in reality, what they do is limit the amount of light that comes through, and they can, in some cases, spoil the overall look of a modern office space. ‘Office lighting has moved on, LED flat panels provide significantly improved light distribution and efficiency and there are no issues with VDU compliance.’

Away from the office, The international award-winning Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan, was designed by Iraqi-British architect, Zaha Hadid who is renowned for her distinctive architectural flow and curved style that abstains from sharp angles. Language, history and culture have been the building blocks for the design of the centre, which hosts art exhibitions, international conferences, concerts, and forums. The carefully considered lighting design by Maurice Brill Lighting Design (MBLD) enhances the fluidity of the striking new building. Rob Honeywill, managing director of MBLD commented on the project: ‘We needed to bond light with architecture, and respond to the vast and complex three-dimensional geometry for the interior and exterior forms. We tried to underscore the core architectural sculptural narrative to capture a fluid expression, where the boundaries of light and architecture blurred and a far more organic result is created.’ MBLD designed a lighting solution, which included Helvar’s energy efficient lighting control system. The advanced lighting system allows full control, and maintains the energy efficient lighting scheme in the building’s auditorium at a consistent, flicker-free, low level ensuring that the drama of the interior is undisturbed. The Centre management team is able to control and monitor the efficiency of the lighting systems, whilst enhancing the user experience, by simple programming for various events and locations, inside and out. ‘The lighting responds to the constantly varying 3D geometry, and is aimed at expressing the sculptural quality of the building,’ said Aniket Gore, associate at MBLD, and project lighting designer. ‘Innovative lighting details, discreetly integrated within the building fabric, graze the surface of the expansive lobby that connects all the main spaces, modeling the skin, and providing indirect lighting.’ The auditorium was required to have very low level, flicker-free lighting, and Helvar was able to mitigate any potential flickering of LEDs by upgrading the driver software and employing its own lighting control equipment. ‘The lighting design for Heyder Aliyev Centre was an exciting, challenging, and informative journey, which involved producing numerous 3D lighting studies, reviewing a string of mock-ups, and lighting trials on site, to achieve the lighting effect that we had envisioned,’ added Gore.

s part of its move to larger premises, Surelight MD, Paul Lancaster wanted to combine an LED showroom with office space, but the project had a lot of boxes to tick. First and foremost, it needed to be a functional working office space. At the same time it needed to showcase the company’s product range, so customers could see the lights in situ, being used in a creative and inspiring way. The task to design and project manage the build was undertaken by marketing director, Ryan Heald. The three-storey building needed a lot of work to convert an existing open-plan hybrid office/ warehouse into a space that would suit each team in their very specific roles. After initial concept mockups were created, technical director, Daniel Hewitt recreated the proposed office layout and carried out lighting simulations in DIALux, to ensure the correct lighting was specified. The lighting selected had to show the company’s full product range, but also provide continuity throughout the building. Starting on the ground floor, visitors are greeted with a simple staircase lit with LED grid tiles, and emergency lighting. At the flick of a switch, the stairwell can be saturated with colour from RGB flexible strip hidden in the handrails, and Oceanus RGB LED spotlights at the door, washing the walls with vibrant colour, which can be changed using a Vitrum-8 multi-zone RGBW glass wall controller. The ground floor warehouse needed robust lighting, as forklift trucks are constantly in use within the space. With a high ceiling at the front of the warehouse, a wall-mounted Chaos LED tunnel light was specified. Its high lumen output can illuminate the entire space without getting in the way of the forklifts. Towards the back of the warehouse, the ceiling heights are lower, so Atlas LED fixtures were used to provide water-resistant, dust-proof, and anti-corrosion (tri-proof) properties. The middle floor of the new HQ accommodates the accounts department, a showroom/meeting room, staff kitchen, and a photographic area. The accounts office doubles as a reception area, so was designed to be warm and welcoming; warm white Luna-6 LED down-lights, controlled by a Vitrum-5 multi-zone dimming glass wall controller, bathe the space with a soft, warm, yet bright light. Bespoke walnut worktops were cove lit with RGBW architectural LED flexible strip lighting, providing a vibrant element of colour. The showroom and meeting area was at the core of the lighting design. Cylindrus pendant fittings float above the large meeting table, while a cabinet displays Surelight’s product range in various colour temperatures. The kitchen is lit by Caelum down-lights, providing ideal illumination for food preparation areas. The tilt-able down-lights are directed at various parts of the kitchen to create visual focal points. The photographic area features Quadro high brightness LED grid panels, whose diffuse light adds additional pure white light to the photography studio’s rig. The top floor of the building features sliding doors utilising architectural grade LED flexible light strip hidden in aluminium profile, and creating directional focus. Vitrum-8 controller and several wireless receivers, the doors and display shelving within the space can be programmed to change colour, either together or independently. Quadro LED grid panels were used throughout on the upper floor, providing a comfortable working environment with high quality light. Continuo LED light modules were added under desks and behind the clock in the marketing suite, to provide two completely different looks, depending on the required mood. RGB LED neon light rope was also specified, to provide an extra flash of colour, which continues the theme to the sales office. The sales and admin offices feature a bespoke communal oak desk, which flows around the perimeter of the room to make the

best use of space. Four 600mm Sol surface mounted LED fixtures were wall mounted to accentuate the desk, giving the impression of portholes in the side of a ship. RGB undercounter LED flexible strip continues the colour themes throughout the offices. As this area had the most natural light, colour temperature-changing Quadro LED grid panels were installed. Combined with a Vitrum-7 controller, the colour temperature can be altered to improve productivity and concentration throughout the day. The kitchen area also takes full advantage of the Vitrum-8, with the inclusion of Quadro RGB LED grid light alongside the standard Quadro LED grid panels. This colourchanging mood lighting has created a comfortable area for staff to enjoy a coffee, or sit down with a client.
After his efforts to create the perfect lit environment for the company’s staff and visitors, Ryan Heald is delighted with the results: ‘I am really proud to have overseen the project management and design of such a fantastic space; watching it change from an empty shell to a modern and luxurious LED lighting showroom, office suite, and warehouse. ‘The warehouse space has allowed us to offer more products from stock, ideal for our trade and wholesale customers. The building has been bespoke designed to meet our needs, from the ground up, and it is truly an amazing place to work’. MD, Paul Lancaster added: ‘The new headquarters are a dream to work in. All the staff loves the office, and customers are wowed when they come to visit!’

his year, LuxLive joins forces with Strategies in Light Europe, and lightspace dot London. Attendees can visit 300 exhibitors, and take in 80 hours of debates and panel discussions. The organisers say it will be an unrivalled showcase of the best the industry can offer, in terms of technology: the best lamps, state-of-the-art luminaires, and sophisticated controls systems, representing the entire industry supply chain. The programme will be streamed for all the key sectors, which are feeling the effects of LEDs: retail, hospitality, healthcare, education, commercial, transport and rail, street lighting, and industrial, as well as technical streams and general industry update sessions. As you’d expect, the big names will be out in force so, if you’re interested in LED replacement lamps, wireless controls, streetlighting or outdoor innovations, there’s an exhibitor or two to keep you happy. For designer luminaires, visitors will able to make a beeline for lightspace dot london. A new event co-located with LuxLive, lightspace will bring together leading thinkers, including architects, and lighting designers, to explore how lighting can help re-interpret the built environment. It will host two days of inspirational speakers, alongside a curated exhibition, featuring innovations from leading lighting marques, including iGuzzini and Zumtobel. Visitors to LuxLive will be able to access a rolling programme of more than 80 sessions so whatever time you rock up, there’ll be something engaging and interactive. Lighting experts will be lifting the lid on hot-button topics, such as the possibilities of intelligent lighting and the ‘Internet of things’ – should we believe the hype? There will be an under-the-bonnet look at exemplar projects, such as Tesco’s massive LED rollout, how Wahaca’s new lighting is helping boost the brand of this Mexican restaurant chain, and a look at why one London hospital is investing £1million in new lighting. There will be sessions on financing lighting projects, as well as a look at the Government’s plan for procuring outdoor lighting. There will be practical talks such as ‘10 things I wish I’d known before starting my LED rollout’, and warranties on lighting products: how not to fall through the loopholes. There’s fun stuff too, in the shape of Dragons’ Den, the Cool Wall and Lamps Behaving Badly! Have you ever tried dimming LEDs? It’s pretty hit and miss. So, experts will be connecting a mixed bag of light sources, dimmers and transformers, to see what happens.

ate October saw the inaugural Lewes Light Festival in East Sussex; a celebration of light and lighting through culture, design, art, science, and the environment. The event brought together a collection of like-minded people and organisations to honour the 2015 UNESCO Year of Light. The Nulty team, headed by Paul Nulty, has strong roots in Sussex, so the company was delighted to take part in the festival, creating three impressive light installations for the event. With a hand from the students at South Downs College, they helped paint the town with light, transforming Linklater Pavilion, Harvey’s Brewery, and Pells Pool. The Linklater Pavilion, home to The Railway Land Wildlife Trust, formed the hub of the festival, housing a programme of talks throughout the event. The approach to this eco building had to be eye-catching and welcoming for visitors, so the design team created a reflective sculpture around the spiral staircase, using autumnal colours to complement the environment. Surrounding trees were up lit, and in order to guide visitors from the street through to the Pavilion, the route was lined with hundreds of glowing paper lanterns.

Harvey’s Brewery and its prominent chimney form an iconic view of Lewes, and the approach to lighting it was to celebrate the architectural details of this historic building. By using focused lighting and a variety of tones - from white through to amber – the team showcased and highlighted the different materials used within the structure. A theatrical green filter was used to backlight the windows; the green representing the colour of the hops stored inside, and creating a majestic scene when walking into the town. Pells pool is the oldest documented public freshwater pool in the UK, and was the real swansong of the event. The local Lewes swans had some new neighbours, in the form of life-size illuminated paper swans; floating gracefully on the water, they took centre stage in this unique space that was framed with a vibrant cool blue light.

n Karlsbad, Germany, veteran Australian lighting designer, Francesco Calvi was the man in charge of lighting a fast-paced show featuring a team of all-action daredevil bike riders, known as Nitro Circus. Founded by ring leader, and world class athlete, Travis Pastrana, the Sydneybased Nitro Circus Live tour features more than 40 of the world’s best action sports athletes, performing daring and recordbreaking tricks in freestyle motocross, BMX, and skateboarding, aided by stunts involving water coolers, rocking horses, and even an eponymous Lazy Boy couch. The lighting has to be equal to the

challenge of placing all this action into a rock ‘n’ roll themed, stadium context. Brought in by production manager, Brendan Maher, with whom he had worked previously Calvi was hardly fazed. Although these events follow a typical rock concert model, with build-up day, and the infrastructure built and ready for rehearsals by 3pm-4pm the same day, safety has to be the prime concern. ‘These riders can, and unfortunately do, get hurt, so it’s important that they can see where they are going, and where they land,’ he explained. ‘Management also wanted to give the whole show a theatrical edge, so when
the riders are doing their thing, the ramps need to be static – and bright. ‘Landings and introductions get the movement and coloured [light] treatment – while the show also has an outdoor run, where they use the stadium lights,’ he added. Although Calvi has enjoyed an international career spanning 30 years, this was his first tour in the US, and GLP partner, Upstaging supplied the lighting inventory, including 18 of the tiny GLP impression X4 S. These provided a discreet but powerful beam from seven RGBW high-powered LEDs, rated at 15W each, with the X4 family’s signature 7°-50° zoom optic.

Calvi was delighted with the service he received. ‘Upstaging were amazing,’ he enthused. ‘They will always be my vendor of choice when we tour.’ He confirmed that he had been steered towards the X4 S by Upstaging’s, George Slejko. ‘When I told him what I was looking for, he immediately recommended this.’ The largest part of the show is aerial stunts, with riders coming off the jumps, which can get quite high, and it’s a large area to cover just from the trusses. ‘I needed a fixture that was punchy, but with a small footprint, as with all the stuff we put in to the arena, space can be at a premium,’ explained Calvi. ‘Using

18 X4 S on the floor to up-light the aerials and highlight the jumps was a great decision; they delivered plenty of output and a nice wide flood. ‘They are also used in the introductions, landings, and play-offs, when the rig has more movement and colour.’ However, this wasn’t Francesco Calvi’s first encounter with the German manufacturer’s LED platform. He specified the original impression 90s on the TV franchise, So You Think You Can Dance Australia – the result of another recommendation from Vince Haddad at Show Technology.

or some time there’s been murmurings as to why the UK’s retail sector has been slow in adopting LED technology. Theories abound – everything from up front costs to a lack of knowledge of benefits. However, one area of the industry that doesn’t seem to be slow in making the change to an energy efficient future is convenience stores. No longer just the tiny ‘Arkwright-style’ corner shop, packed with anything and everything local folk could possibly want, convenience retailing incorporates garage forecourt shops, mini versions of our favourite out-of-town supermarkets, plus, of course, local independent stores owned by budding entrepreneurs who’ve spotted a gap in the local high street offering. Almost without exception, these retailers have seen the light.

RETAIL
One such well-known local retailer is the Co-op. LED lighting has, quite literally, transformed my local East of England Co-op Foodstore in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. The handy local shop now boasts a range of LED luminaires, which has rejuvenated the space, and importantly, delivered on the required lighting levels. The popular DEXLED 1200 x 600 luminaire from Dextra seemed the ideal choice to increase levels to the specified 1000 lux on the shop floor. The fitting combines a traditional louvre design with high transmission optic materials. A choice of two, three, or four-cell louvre variants, using the latest Philips LEDs, offer additional flexibility. Each variant is available in a wide range of lumen outputs which all offer superb energy efficiency. Suitable for a wide range of commercial applications such as LED3 standalone emergency units were utilised alongside the DEXLED fittings in the main store. The IP20-rated LED3 is manufactured to BS EN 60598.2.22, delivering a high performance, low wattage light source. The LED lighting solution has proved so successful for the retailer that a similar project has been undertaken, just down the road in Lavenham, but this time going a stage further with its first all-LED store. The Grade II listed building in the historic village was granted an investment of £670,000, which has completely transformed 44 • N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
In all honesty, my perception of LEDs had been that they were something of an unknown’ the space into East of England Co-op’s first ‘village shop’. Careful restoration has achieved high levels of natural daylight, so Dextra’s MODLED suspended fitting, complete with R24 DM integral daylight and presence sensor, was specified, suspended from a cable tray. For sheer versatility, it is hard to beat, with different lumen outputs and sizes, as well as the ability to be surface mounted, suspended individually, or in continuous runs. The layout can be customised using corner pieces and blind units. The company’s Graduate LED luminaire was selected for the front of store. Boasting an 8,800 lumen output, opal polycarbonate diffuser, and constructed in a gloss white finish and steel housing, the luminaire successfully ties in with the décor, and achieves a good uniform light distribution
across the store. The new LED lighting has transformed the space, internally and externally, with improved visibility for the rear car park provided by Dexeco’s Impervia LED luminaire. The popular IP65-rated LED fitting offers impressive performance and energy savings over its fluorescent equivalents. Integral R25 on/off presence detection ensures customers using the external covered pedestrian walkway can access the car park in safety. Powered by Philips SLM LED technology, and with a stylish black finish, Hi-Track LED fittings were used in the display windows, which are lit at night. Hi-Track is manufactured from die cast aluminium and is available in 35W and 70W CDMTC, as well as 1,400, 2,000 and 3,000 lumen LED variants. The impressive array of precisionengineered LED luminaires specified has created an attractive and welcoming retail space for Lavenham’s shoppers. Moving south, an Essex forecourt operator has achieved an energy-efficient lighting transition using Energys’ LED fittings to create a safer, more comfortable environment for staff and customers alike. The project, at Belgrave service station in Leigh-on-Sea, involved Highway Stops Retail Limited. The company recently undertook an upgrade of the lighting infrastructure at Belgrave, having found it to be deficient in

several important regards. ‘Light levels were too low, the colour (rather orangey!) wasn’t great, and seemed particularly inadequate in winter, when it gets dark at 4pm,’ explained Tony Head, development director at Highway Stops. ‘There was a clear health and safety issue to be addressed here, as well as a desire to create a more comfortable environment, especially at night.’ The potential of LED to achieve longterm cost savings was another prompt, as was the desire to tackle an enduring maintenance issue. The answer came in the form of Energys Group’s New Vision LED lamps. Energys was recommended to Highway Stops, and although meetings with other suppliers did take place, Energys proved to be ‘very competitive’, enthused Head. ‘They also carried out a full site survey and a risk assessment in advance – and so were able to demonstrate the quality of the products, and identify a potential savings and payback period.’ Unsurprisingly, Tony Head is delighted by the financial implications of the new

installation. But the upgrade is also paying off in terms of an overall improvement to the station environment – one that has been readily acknowledged by staff and customers alike. ‘The quality of the light is much better – brighter and lighter,’ he said. ‘In all honesty, my perception of LEDs had been that they were something of an unknown,’ he admitted, ‘but the project at Belgrave has successfully
dissipated all of those doubts. Since the installation, it’s become clear that the LEDs are comfortably outperforming the previous lighting.’ It is not surprising to discover that after the successful installation at Belgrave, further deployments are currently under consideration. ‘I am delighted by the impact that the new lighting has had at Belgrave, and I hope that in time it will be possible to go completely LED across all of our service stations,’ Head concluded. Even the humble pavement sign – beloved by local shops and hated by commuters rushing for the early train – has fallen victim to progress, it seems. Venus – the latest pavement sign from W&Co, is illuminated using a high brightness LED panel, powered by a rechargeable lithium battery hidden securely in the base. Venus is designed to make advertisements and news headlines more noticeable to customers at all hours – hopefully including the unwary early morning commuter.

orking with architectural practice, Haskoll, Hoare Lea developed the lighting solution for Victoria Place Shopping Centre, the newly refurbished retail destination and food court in London’s Victoria Station. The centre now hosts a number of popular retail outlets, including Holland & Barrett, David Clulow, and Next, as well as a selection of restaurants, casual eateries, coffee shops, and convenience food stores. The brief presented to Haskoll was to refurbish the shopping centre and food court, with the aim of re-launching Victoria Place as a destination within the station, that would attract a greater proportion of the flow of travellers (around 120 million each year), as well as bringing in shoppers from surrounding areas. Hoare Lea Lighting worked with Haskoll to create a bright environment featuring a vibrant lighting design for the twostorey space. Ambient lighting is provided by linear recessed, and surfacemounted luminaires, and LED downlights from ACDC, which create a comfortable visual environment, assisting way finding and navigation. An impression of natural daylight is created from the large Barrisol ceiling, backlit by an array of Osram LED XAL modules. This creates the illusion of daylight, which encourages visitors to linger, especially in the restaurant areas on the second floor balcony. Feature elements include Optelma’s Conico, cone-shaped luminaire. This bespoke pendant adds drama, while providing general illumination to the floor of the centre. It incorporates a subtle colour-change element, which adds discreet interest to the scene. Pardip Kaur, architect at Haskoll commented on the finished project: ‘Haskoll’s concept for the lighting scheme was designed to create a dramatic and uplifting interior that would transform the previously dark and uninviting space. ‘The various lighting solutions work together to create a vibrant environment for both retailers and end-users. The lighting design has successfully re-invigorated the mall and food court areas, adding value to the development, and refocusing it as a retail destination.’

Shape shifters NetLED’s Jack Cooper has a light bulb moment about the shape of things to come
S
ince Edison developed the first incandescent lights in the 1870s, the bulb-shaped luminaire has been synonymous with innovation. The cartoonish image of a light bulb appearing when somebody experiences a sudden realisation, moment of clarity, or stroke of genius, has become ingrained in our minds – that moment of ‘switching on’ to an idea. This symbol has endured for decades, and has perhaps contributed to the public’s apprehension when it comes to moving away from the traditional shape of light sources. Although the technologies that lights our homes and businesses have changed beyond recognition, replacing old-style fittings with modern equivalents is still common practice. This is the case for many commercial lighting contracts as the market standard continues to move in the direction of LED. Innovation in lighting has, however, moved away from the traditional bulb shape, in lieu of something far less rigid. Before the large-scale adoption of LED as a viable light source in the late 2000s, the shape of a luminaire was dictated by the requirements of the components for producing light. The shape of an incandescent bulb was designed to house a coil in a vacuum – the bulb itself provided the perfect shape for dissipating the heat produced, protecting the coil. The length of a fluorescent tube was necessary to generate illuminance from the mercury vapour. These units generally have a lifespan of between 7,000 and 15,000 hours, meaning a fairly high turnover rate in heavy use commercial applications. Manufacturers of quality LED lighting products incorporate small surface-mount devices (SMDs) into their products, C O N TA C T
creating a highly efficient heat sink, which increases the lifespan of the LEDs to more than 50,000 hours. Combined with the small size of the light emitting components, this factor raises an interesting question: considering quality units can last more than a decade, when used in standard business hours, and more than five-anda-half years of 24/7 use, why should LED luminaires be constrained to the shapes of their high maintenance predecessors? Consider the LED panel: a wellconstructed LED panel will deliver uniform light from a ceiling grid, without the need for any additional components. The most popular size for the LED panel is 600mm x 600mm – the size of a standard commercial application ceiling tile. The panel was designed to suit the application, rather than the other way round, giving greater freedom to lighting designers, facilities managers, and architects. No longer restricted by the demands of old-style lighting technology, SMDs allow luminaires to be scaled, to allow greater flexibility in shape, size, and subsequent functionality. Fluorescent tubes, GU10, and MR16 lamps were designed with ease of replacement, and thus disposability, in mind. This was an indication of the relative inefficiency and unpredictable lifespan of the technology. The increased efficiency of LED drastically cuts down on businesses need to regularly maintain, replace, and recycle components. An important change to the Energy Technology List (ETL)’s ECA Scheme in 2013 highlighted this transition towards more sustainable lighting units, by removing retrofit LED products from the ‘approved’ list. The scheme aims to encourage the purchase of higher
energy efficiency products. Removing retrofit products from the scheme’s scope emphasises the industry’s move towards complete-luminaire technology. Manufacturers of good quality LED lighting are continuing to develop products geared towards complete luminaire solutions, as a response to this shift in requirements, with complete LED batten luminaires and non-corrosives increasingly specified by electrical contractors and architects, to meet ECA Scheme criteria. With more products in the market
So, how many electricians does it take to change a light bulb? The capabilities LED technology offers are forcing disposable components – and the old joke – into retirement’ meeting the ECA performance criteria (white light production, BS EN 61347-213:2006 control gear compliance), the move towards complete luminaires is essential for businesses looking to take advantage of the scheme’s benefits. So, how many electricians does it take to change a light bulb? The capabilities LED technology offers for quality complete luminaires, are forcing disposable components – and the old joke – into retirement, as they push lighting towards a bolder, brighter, and longer-lasting future.

he floating Moon lights from a Korean luminaire manufacturer create atmospheric lighting on the surface of water — providing they can survive the local daily temperature fluctuations of up to 40°C. These cause extreme pressure differentials inside the fitting’s housing, resulting in constant stress on the seals. Over time, water and harsh contaminants enter the housing, driving up maintenance costs, and causing the lamps to fail, so the manufacturer needed a remedy. As temperatures rise during the day, the air inside the luminaire’s housing expands, and tries to push the seal outward. During the night, the air inside the housing cools, contracts, and tries to pull the seal inward. The constant changes in pressure wear the seal until it is no longer able to keep out dirt and moisture, causing damage to the luminaires’ electronics, which then failed as a result of corrosion or short circuits. This became an unsustainable problem for the manufacturer for two reasons: firstly, the company was afraid of substantial damage to its image caused by the defects in the luminaires, which are used exclusively for decorative purposes; and secondly, the company would face huge maintenance and repair costs unless it found a reliable long-term solution to the problem.

Challenge: environmental conditions impair light output
Sample calculation: the lower the IP rating, the higher the maintenance cost
In order to maintain the desired light output over the long term, despite the daily effects of the weather, luminaire manufacturers are usually forced to rely on expensive repairs, or the replacement of defective components [figure 1]. This situation is described in the international standard, CIE 154:2003, The maintenance of outdoor lighting systems, as follows: ‘Once the non-recoverable reductions by ageing or soiling have occurred, they cannot be brought back to their original condition, and replacement of the outer glazing or complete luminaire may be necessary. This is the case with luminaires if they are in, say, dusty or oily atmospheres. In such cases, it is well worth considering, at the design stage, the use of sealed luminaires of high IP ratings, e.g. IP6X’ [figure 2]. The manufacturer was therefore faced with the challenge of achieving an IP rating of at least IP6X, so that its Moon Lights offered the requisite brightness and reliability in high quality — and did so without leading to rising maintenance costs if at all possible.
The relationship between maintenance costs/intervals and IP rating is expressed in the following formula, defined in CIE standard 154:2003: MF = LSF x LLMF x LMF. Accordingly, the maintenance factor (MF) is the product of the lamp survival factor (LSF), the lamp lumen maintenance factor (LLMF), and the luminaire maintenance factor (LMF). Increasing any one of these variables also increases the maintenance factor. Yet the luminaire maintenance factor (LMF) is the only factor the manufacturer can influence, as the lamp lumen maintenance factor (LLMF) merely states the unalterable fact that the luminosity of every lamp declines over its lifetime, while the lamp survival factor (LSF) defines the manufacturerindependent service life of every lamp technology. Manufacturers can take positive measures to improve the LMF by protecting the lamp against environmental conditions to a rating of IP6X. In order to underpin its emphasis on quality, the Korean luminaire manufacturer originally designed the lamp so that a three-year warranty could be offered. However, from the point of view of cost, a warranty of this length is viable only when a product has a rating of IP65 or higher. The following sample calculation demonstrates this relationship: 120 LED Moon Lights are installed on the surface of a Korean lake, and are switched on every
SPECIALIST

FIGURE 2
evening for 4.5 hours until midnight. This means that every lamp is in operation for approximately 1,500 hours a year, and should reach its intended service life of 4,500 hours at a maintenance interval of three years. CIE standard 154:2003 defines the service life of an LED lamp as the time it takes its voltage (luminous flux) to fall to 70 per cent of initial illuminance. In addition, the luminaire maintenance factor (LMF) is 0.87 for a luminaire housing with a rating of IP65 and a maintenance interval of three years. This gives the following calculation for the maintenance factor: MF = LLMF x LMF = 0.7 x 0.87 = 0.609 Over time, the changes in air pressure fatigued the seal on the luminaire housing, making it easier for dirt particles and liquid to get in. As a result, the IP rating fell from IP65 to IP54. According to CIE 154:2003, this now made the LMF just 0.82, which in turn reduced the maintenance factor: MF = LLMF x LMF = 0.7 x 0.82 = 0.574 In other words, the Moon Lights were six per cent less efficient than the manufacturer had intended. This reduced effectiveness could be compensated either by a higher luminous flux, higher energy consumption, or a shorter maintenance interval, but all of these measures have the drawback of increasing costs. At the originally envisaged maintenance interval of three years, 40 of the 120 luminaires installed would have to be replaced. In order to achieve the targeted maintenance factor of 0.609, despite the lower IP5X rating however, the luminaires would have to be replaced after approximately one and a half years, or 80 luminaires would need to be replaced every year and not 40. If we set the maintenance costs per luminaire at an average of 100 euros, to cover the labour involved, the boat the technicians take out onto the water, and the replacement material, the costs add up to 8,000 euros — or twice the 4,000 euros’ maintenance cost originally calculated.
Vent facilitates pressure equalisation, and maintains IP rating There are various approaches that can be taken in order to avoid this 100 per cent cost increase. Since the design could not be modified, the product development team considered drilling a small hole in the housing to help equalise pressure. However, water and harsh contaminants could still enter the housing — including dirt, dust, insects, heavy rain, and hail. They also considered tightening the seals with more screws, but there was no guarantee that this would solve the problem long-term. Ultimately, the team decided they needed a reliable solution that could be easily retrofitted into the existing design, to equalize pressure rapidly while preventing water and harsh containments from entering the housing. Because these lights were already installed on water, they needed to identify, test, and integrate their solution quickly. The manufacturer’s assistant manager of development contacted WL Gore for assistance selecting the best venting solution to solve its application needs quickly. The specialist’s engineers collaborated with the product development team to understand the specific challenges, providing several venting samples, and testing alternative designs to ensure that the right vent was selected for the lights. The team determined the best position for the vent in the existing design, to minimize the effect on the aesthetics and maximize protection and airflow. Initial testing indicated that, due to the size and large amount of free space inside the housing, airflow of 5,000 ml/min was needed to equalize pressure differentials, and prevent the seals from leaking during daily temperature fluctuations. To solve these issues, the engineers recommended a protective vent with snap-fit construction (PMF200484). Each Moon Light required two vents that could be quickly and easily retrofitted into the existing design. According to a spokesperson for the manufacturer, the specialist’s team responded quickly with resources to evaluate the problem, and provide a robust solution. ‘The venting specialist’s knowledge of luminaires and the issues we were encountering helped us solve our problem with minimum interruption in production. ‘The durability and high performance of the protective vent quickly solved our problem and ultimately, improved customer satisfaction,’ he explained.

Concord Concord shines at the home of cricket The architectural and design lighting specialist Concord, part of the Havells Sylvania group, has completed an ambitious lighting project at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Concord Glace has been installed in 16 private viewing boxes, helping to provide the perfect atmosphere to enjoy this summer’s cricket. The project was completed by Knight Harwood, which was tasked with updating the private boxes to provide a modern and comfortable environment. Fronted by floor length glass panels, the rooms harbour a large amount of sunlight. To complement the natural light, the High Power Glace luminaire was installed, which produces nearly 1500 lumens, 30% more than the standard model. The increased output improves light levels and quality of light within the rooms, whilst the ability to dim the Glace provides flexibility to the end users.
Simon Ferrier, Knight Harwood Assistant Building Services Engineer, comments: “The Glace was chosen for its high quality finish and even light distribution, helping to achieve the perfect atmosphere within the boxes. As all of the boxes incorporate the same themes it was important to install lighting that conformed to this, producing even, consistent light. ” The sleek design of the Glace compliments the interiors of the box. The wall mounted luminaires fit seamlessly, producing a bright 4000k colour. The four Glace luminaires are located equally on adjacent walls, enhancing but crucially not intruding upon the view to the Lords pitch. Due to the compact nature of the private viewing boxes, the temperature has to be closely monitored. Thanks to the ultra-efficient ability of the LED technology, no power is lost through heat, ensuring the boxes can maintain an optimum temperature.

Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary celebrations at the British Library

agna Carta is recognised as one of the world’s most important documents and, in a temporary exhibition commemorating the 800th anniversary of its signing, independent lighting designer, Studio ZNA has crafted a spectacular scheme that follows the narrative of the charter. The exhibition, Magna Carta: Law, Liberty, Legacy, seeks to engage visitors with the historic narrative of the charter, showing how the perception of the document has

developed as the wider geo-political context has altered. In addition to two of the surviving copies of the original charter, artefacts that help to shape the story of Magna Carta, including stunning manuscripts, paintings, statues, and royal relics are on display. Further antiquities, which Studio ZNA was tasked with lighting as part of the exhibition, include Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence, and one of the original copies of the US Bill of Rights, both pivotal documents in the history of North America, and evidence of the global impact that Magna Carta has had beyond British shores. The exhibition marks the first time both documents had been presented in the UK, and is testament to the rigour of the
exhibition designer, RFK, in constructing an exhibition narrative that details both the background to the signing of the charter, and the legacy of those who have used - and abused - its power. Carolina Sterzi, of Studio ZNA, sought to create a lighting scenario that supported the exhibition’s design ambition of telling the complete story of the charter, and craft an attractive atmosphere for visitors to experience this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. Key challenges in lighting the exhibition included different ceiling heights, and the different feelings each section had been designed to evoke. Additionally, due to the age of the exhibits, lighting had to be carefully managed to ensure no risk of degradation to the antiquities presented, as Sterzi explained:

‘Delicate and careful focusing work has been carried out to arrange light levels, and comply with appropriate conservation requirements. For light-sensitive objects, luminaires with on-board dimming ability were selected.’ More than 30 Pico surface spotlights were used in the gallery spaces, each with 33° x 15° elliptical optics, used to illuminate the labeling of pieces, without causing light spill on to the floor below. Budgetary constraints led Studio ZNA to utilise as much of the British Library’s existing halogen spotlight stock as possible within the scenario, while the addition of LED Pico and linear fittings were selected for their low energy consumption and ease of maintenance. Additionally, 20 Pico Zooms provided the exhibition space with extra flexibility. Zoom features tool-less variable team technology, based on linear slide mechanism, allowing Studio ZNA to fine-tune the beam angle from a narrow 12° spot to a broader 30° floor

distribution, on site. The miniature LED spotlights were put to good use in the exhibition, lighting an imposing statue of Geoffrey de Mandeville, which greets visitors to the exhibition. Baron de Mandeville was a contemporary of King John in 1215, and one of the sureties at the signing of Magna Carta. James Sherwood Westmacott sculpted the statue, one of a series commissioned by Charles Barry as part of a refurbishment of the Palace of Westminster, and the variable beams of the Pico Zooms draw attention to the scale of the piece, heightening the sense of severity of the sculpture. For the dramatic final section of the exhibition, where two of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta from 1215 were to be presented, Studio ZNA faced a very specific challenge. ‘The space itself is a simple dark room, with large, thick sheets of glass protecting the two documents, and the danger
of reflection spoiling the view of these irreplaceable documents is high,’ Sterzi explained. The Pico’s small form-factor enabled the luminaire to be installed in the underlying structure; and careful cross focusing of the spotlights overcame any risk of reflection. The Zoom variant was chosen for lighting the surviving copies of the charter, as it gave Sterzi more flexibility to tweak the beam angle for highlighting the documents, without missing any of the fine details. She concluded: ‘Having hidden the source of light, and removed all unnecessary reflections, the two copies emerge from the darkness of the room with stark clarity, leaving the visitor to experience a unique moment in the course of human history.’ The effect is stunning; with the contrast between the extremely low ambience and the beautifully lit charters, the room evokes a sense of contemplation on the role that the charter has, and its continued legacy.

PREMIUM CLASS CONTROL
A London members club turned hotel needed premium quality lighting controls
T
he Arts Club in Mayfair is a London private members club founded in 1863 by, amongst others, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, and Lord Leighton. The venue’s management has decided to expand the facilities it offers to members to include a boutique 16-room hotel. Executive director, Alice Chadwyck-Healey explained the rationale behind the project: ‘Many of the Arts Club members have asked us to expand our offering, so we expect plenty of demand to stay. ‘We believe that the new hotel will attract a very international guest, who wishes to relax in a high quality, glamorous, and discreet suite in central London.’

The 16 guest rooms occupy former office space on the second, third, and fourth floors of the Arts Club’s Dover Street site. With its historical background, interiors designed by Sagrada, and artwork and furnishings by Jacques Adnet, Gio Ponti, Finn Juhl, Piero Fornasetti, and Hans Wegner, it was clearly important that high-tech aspects of the expansion intrude minimally on the aesthetics. Lighting Controls was selected to design and provide state-of-the-art control systems to enable guests total control of their lighting environment while staying at the Club, ensuring they received the best experience.

OPINION
Performance peace of mind Mark Salt, general manager of LIA Laboratories, explains the value of independent certification
H
aving confidence in the lighting products you specify is clearly of paramount importance. It is a given that any lighting products on the market should comply with all of the relevant safety regulations, but such compliance isn’t necessarily a guarantee that the products will perform to expectations. Ideally, of course, the manufacturer’s claims for those products will be accurate, but how can the specifier be sure? Very often, a great deal of reliance is placed on the CE Mark. However, while the CE Mark represents compliance with a number of EU directives, it is not a measure of how well the product will perform, in terms of key parameters such as lumen output and longevity. Nor is it sensible to assume that the CE Mark guarantees
compliance with all of the relevant directives. It’s important to bear in mind that the CE Mark operates through a process of self-declaration, so the company putting the product on the market is able to apply a CE Mark without any independent verification. Inevitably, this can lead to non-compliant products entering the market. A common example of this is the assumption by some suppliers that CE marking only requires compliance with the Low Voltage Directive. In fact, a CE Marked product should also comply with the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC) for electronic devices such as LED lighting, the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (ROHS) Directive, and the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Directive.
C O N TA C T
LIA Laboratories www.thelia.org.uk
Increasing complexity It is also worth noting that the increasing complexity of mainstream lighting products, as LEDs become the first choice for many projects, makes it even more important to be able to trust the manufacturer’s statements on performance. This is why many lighting suppliers are now subjecting the products to independent certification through the LIA Laboratories Verified scheme. In this respect, there are a number of factors that can significantly impact on the performance of LED lighting. For example, the circuitry needs to convert mains voltage to a constant voltage, which is then converted to a constant current by the LED driver. The constancy of the current ensures a constant, proportional light output, and there is also potential for loss of energy at each of these conversion stages. Consequently, bearing in mind the power supply efficiency of LEDs can vary from 50-90 per cent, the quality of manufacture is critical to delivering the efficiency expected of LEDs. Other key aspects of design include the quality of the phosphor coating used to generate white light, and the effectiveness of the thermal management designed into a retrofit lamp or LED luminaire to
prevent the circuits from overheating. Optical design is also important, as a luminaire designed for use with LED light sources will take maximum advantage of the inherent directional quality of LEDs to maximise the light output ratio and associated efficiency. As well as evaluating safety aspects therefore, independent certification needs to assess all of these other factors. Initial testing will certainly focus on the safety aspects, checking for over-voltage and correct mounting of components, with a view to ensuring that if a product fails, it does so safely. Subsequent testing will then verify (or not) the manufacturer’s claims regarding photometric performance, as well as life testing of light sources. Furthermore, such testing should provide verification to ISO 17025, ideally by a certifying body that is itself certified to ISO 17065, such as LIA Laboratories. Association with the Energy Saving Trust also provides verification of energy performance. By specifying lighting products that have undergone such extensive, independent verification and certification, specifiers are able to reassure themselves that the solutions they deliver for their clients will result in satisfaction rather than disappointment.

PEOPLE
MINUTES WITH
Ben Porter What is your favourite light source, and why? I would have to say the squirrel cage carbon filament lamp. There is just something about being able to see the burning filament that I find mesmerising. Building facades lit with colour; are you for or against – and why? Colour in moderation, and where appropriate, can be brilliant. However, a fast cycling RGB façade is not to my taste. Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting-related?
Ben Porter, one of Hoare Lea Lighting’s team of talented lighting designers, has agreed to step under the spotlight this month
An artist called Tyler Stout. He creates posters and sculptures, primarily for the cinema and music scene. I love his style, and am building up quite a collection of his works. Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? I would love to have worked on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in Abu Dhabi. I think it is stunning. After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance in lighting technology? I hope that lighting becomes far more integrated with the architecture of the spaces, within which it sits. LEDs and OLEDs lend themselves so well to this; it seems the logical move forward. Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we begin the process of achieving it? I like to think that a sustainable world can be achieved.
74 • N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 4 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
And why stop there, when we can push further and repair so much of the damage we have done to our environment? We owe it to the world in which we live. What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting for 2016? I see more people using systems such as Philips’ Hue and Osram’s Lightify to create home automation and make lighting a more cohesive part of their daily lives.
I would love to have worked on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in Abu Dhabi. I think it is stunning’ Why do you think lighting is bucking the general trend and showing such strong growth? I think that many things, such as European Directives, and carbon and energy saving targets, are driving market growth against the current trend. Chandelier or candle? Candle Is there one declining light source that you’ll miss above all others? If so, which is it, and why? I’ll miss incandescent sources if they are eventually phased out. They are where it all began, and it will be a shame to see them forgotten.
