It really doesn’t seem five minutes since I was trawling through all of last year’s show material, trying to make sure that we didn’t miss the best of what was on offer for visitors to the three big lighting events of the autumn: Tent London, 100% Design and Decorex. And yet, here we are, having just done it all over again. Last year’s events were a huge success for all concerned, so it’s with great anticipation that we start the countdown to the 2013 shows. Hopefully we’ll see some of you there, but if you can’t make it, at least you’ll know what you’re missing. I spotted a news item the other day, which gave me pause for thought: apparently my very own Suffolk County Council has been embarrassed by its failure to replace a faulty street lamp. The repair took 21 months from being reported, which in anyone’s book is a fairly long time, but not my primary concern. What was interesting was SCC’s reason for the delay – that it’s not cost effective to send out a repair team for just one lamp. Now I’m sure they’re right, but that set me thinking – with the blanket adoption of LEDs for street lighting, and their attendant life span, how long will we need to wait in future when a lamp fails, as presumably they’ll all fail eventually, and at different times? I can imagine the conversation: ‘Yes sir, we’ll have an engineer out there within, ooh, let me check … five or six years?’ Perhaps there’s an opportunity for a budding entrepreneur, who can shin up poles with ease … Some of you may have noticed an increase in Tweets coming from the TL offices of late. In an effort to embrace all avenues to spread the lighting word, we’re employing a nifty bit of technology, which allows the magazine to be read on the go – on a laptop, on a tablet, or even on your smartphone. If you haven’t already registered for the digital version, it’s a great way to stay in touch while you’re on the move– and it’s so much easier to fit in your pocket than a magazine. Isn’t technology wonderful? Enjoy the month. Tweet, tweet! Gill Anderson | editor

K’DAMM SPECIAL GlassGuard fragment retention lamps have been installed at an iconic Berlin theatre, helping Theater am Kurfürstendamm satisfy the H&S demands of the local authority. The venue’s Art Deco lighting has been one of the main features of the theatre, so it was vital to maintain its original appearance by implementing a retrofit installation. A range of fragment retention lamps was sympathetically fitted throughout the theatre, including back stage and on the stage itself. Installations included floodlights, halogens, standard incandescent lamps and a number of BlackBand T5 fluorescent lamps. For the stage, a variety of colourcoated fragment retention lamps were also supplied. ‘Due to the temporary and mobile nature of lighting rigs and trusses used on stage, there is an increased risk of lamps being broken,’ commented Köster Rößling, the theatre’s lighting engineer. ‘The use of fragment retention lamps throughout the theatre is therefore a great solution for us, as it reduces the risk of injury, not only to backstage staff who deal with lighting, but also to front of house staff and theatre visitors alike.’

Shopping for pleasure Rothschild & Bickers has set up an exclusive lighting collaboration with retailer, Heals as part of its new British lighting collective. September will see the launch of the largest and most inspirational lighting showroom in London – right in time for the design shows. One of only a handful of glassworks still active in the UK, and the only one that primarily focuses on lighting, Rothschild & Bickers continues to breathe life into contemporary design using traditional craft skills. With its focus on expert production and highquality sophisticated finishes, the small company’s work is a perfect fit for Heals lighting department, which is the brand’s exclusive European retailer. The labour-intensive designs, produced in Hertford by the company’s founders, Victoria Rothschild and Mark Bickers, are sought after by hoteliers, retailers and homeowners alike. ‘Every piece that we create is an original,’ explained Rothschild. ‘Each one is free-blown and comes with its own tiny irregularities.’

Created in collaboration with Heals’ lighting buyer, Lucio Longoni, and taking inspiration from all periods of design history – from the Arts and Crafts movement to bubble-like retro styles – Heals is delighted to welcome the Rothschild & Bickers lighting collection in store, where it sits beautifully with the retailer’s own heritage. ‘Our main ambition as a company is to promote the tradition of handblown glass and reinvigorate a dying industry,’ continued Rothschild. ‘The commitment that Heals shows to supporting independent designers, and to the heritage of making, has always been an inspiration. Hopefully this collaboration will cement a new era for craft in the UK.’

Guiding lights The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has been busy creating three new guides, which are all due for publication this year. The updated LG9 Communal Residential Buildings covers everything from student accommodation to care homes, and it will be joined by another update – LG8 Museums & Galleries, which is scheduled to follow later in the summer. Finally, the brand new LG13 Places of Religious Assembly is due out in the autumn. This last guide gives comprehensive information on most major religions: the beliefs, the buildings, and their use, so that a lay lighting designer can get a good feel for what is likely to be needed in any scheme. SLL member can view or download copies of all the lighting guides, as well as the Code for Lighting and the Lighting Handbook absolutely free. Non-members can buy PDF downloads or hard copies at www.sll.co.uk. Another four guides are planned for 2014, so watch this space…

‘VICTOR KIAM’

SY NDROME Back in the day, there was a very famous TV ad for a shaver company, voiced by US entrepreneur, Victor Kiam – the guy who owned the New England Patriots. His closing line in the ad was something along the lines of ‘I liked it so much, I bought the company’. This month’s guest did something similar. Mark Blythe, CEO of Lietcorp has agreed to put himself under the spotlight and bare his soul for TL. Step up, Mr Blythe … Mark Blythe obviously likes to work hard, and to play hard too; he’s as happy steering his boat as he is steering the company. Blythe is a classic entrepreneur; he founded GTI Media, a graduate recruitment company that’s at the top of its league, while still at university. Although he sold the company seven years ago, he continues to sit on the board as a non-executive director, keeping a finger on the pulse. So what’s he doing running a lighting company ? You obviously have a business background, but graduate recruitment is a far cry from LEDs, so what led you to the lighting industry - and to founding Lietcorp? Since a young age, I considered myself a bit of an entrepreneur, which I first put into action while studying at university, in setting up GTI Media. As a keen sailor, I was hugely impressed after buying OceanLED lights for my boat, and so in 2005 I decided to invest in the company. After discovering that the same principles for LED marine lighting could be applied to the commercial and architectural sectors, I decided to put my entrepreneurial skills to the test and launched Lietcorp, a sister company specialising in commercial lighting.

Can you tell us a little about the company and its work? Lietcorp specialises in designing and providing innovating LED technologies for commercial lighting applications. We work with a range of businesses around the world, offering energy savings, improved lighting quality and lowering carbon footprints. I believe that lighting is one of only a handful technologies, which, when done well, offers huge benefits to a wide audience, including businesses, customers and the environment. We focus on refurbishment-cycle lighting that benefits our customers throughout the total cost of ownership. We design and engineer all our products in the UK. Our built-in technologies are developed in-house and all our products are tested and warrantied. We work across a wide range of sectors, including retail, office, industry, and hospitality and leisure. Many well-known brands, such as All Bar One, the Hilton Hotel Group, Odeon Cinemas, Boots, Oxfam and Bathstore have Lietcorp products installed.

The best designers are those that take time to interact with manufacturers And what about your passion for sailing is it a hobby or something more? Do you race, and what sort of boat do you have? I was brought up on the south coast and the sea is in my blood. I currently own an offshore Rib and do adventure cruising in North West Europe. Previously, I used to own large sailing boats, which were a great extravagance and used for a combination of leisure and racing.

Moving on to the future of lighting, what is opinion on the UK’s current crop of young lighting design talent? Do they get enough support from British companies to allow them to become successful? What more do you feel could be done for them? In my experience, a vast number of our young lighting designers are being swayed by overseas suppliers instead of looking towards our local British companies for lighting materials. There seems to be lack of knowledge in the British lighting sphere on “Made in Britain” products, and I feel that British lighting organisations need to work more closely with them in order to educate them on the significant benefits.

Do you have a ‘one to watch’ or favourite lighting designer? LAPD are impressive; they seem to have a good balance between aesthetics and energy considerations. The best designers are those that take time to interact with manufacturers. We don’t bite - and the more we talk, the better our products and their schemes will be.

What are your feelings on the LED – saviour of the 21st century or still a long way to go? And whichever side of the fence you sit, can you explain why? The Led is absolutely a saviour. If produced and installed well, it can deliver massive energy savings without compromising ambience, unlike fluorescent.

What innovations in the world of lighting excite you? The relatively new combination of LED and control systems will deliver even greater cost savings, and is perhaps the most exciting development in our industry. Controls are so intelligent now, and with LEDs becoming more like electronics and less like light fittings, the two match up perfectly.

So are control systems an area of lighting technology you would like to see developing further or faster? Controls are an area, which still need improvement. There is still much more that could be achieved in managing lighting systems, and I feel that over the next year we will see further developments stemming from this revolutionary technology.

In your opinion – and you can only choose one what’s the best light source currently available? LED. Or to qualify that, great quality LED!

So, what’s a typical day at the office for you? The majority of my day is spent on customer-focused sales, operational and supply chain management and general leadership. A smaller chunk is devoted to general business strategy and product development.

And what is the company currently working on? We’re growing at a really fast pace - and the industry is starting to take notice. We’re focusing heavily on recruitment at the moment, attracting good people from some big players, such as Thorn, Osram and Havells Sylvania. Product development is also a major part of our focus. Having just taken our products through a new chip upgrade to increase efficiencies, we’re now working on three LED luminaires that I expect will lead the market.

It all sounds extremely positive, but how do you maintain the drive and passion for the business? Working alongside great people is what I enjoy most, but creating new technology and being able to successfully launch and implement it is another key driver for me. My position has enabled me to challenge the status quo, and being able to discover new ways of working that sees people grow in confidence is a huge bonus.

highlight PAPER TRAIL Aurora Lighting’s full range of solutions is now offered in one catalogue. GREEN serves as a one-stop shop for the company’s product offering, across all four elements of lighting: power, control, lamps and luminaires. Within the catalogue, Lighting Inspirations have been included to introduce product sections. Together with the website, auroralighting.com, it has been designed to serve as a comprehensive educational and practical resource.

FALLING PRICES The average global price of LED light bulbs continues its steady decline, as large manufacturers focus more on the residential lighting market. According to TrendForce, the average selling price of a 40W equiv. LED light bulb fell by one per cent in May, reaching US$16. The largest drop occurred in Taiwan, where 60W equiv. LED light bulb prices dropped by 1.1% to US$23.80, although the price was unstable across all regions, with less renewing products. TrendForce’s LEDinside observed that, apart from an increase in UK prices in May, the product price in the rest of the regions either remained steady or decreased. For the domestic market, Osram, Samsung, and LG in Germany have come up with 40W equivalent bulbs, which sell for less than 10. In China, local manufacturers, such as SunSun and BYD, are also positive about the development for the residential market. Chinese manufacturers plan to win market share from the international manufacturers by price, while in Taiwan, the market competition is getting more intense with Toshiba promoting different types of low-priced 40W equivalent LED bulbs, all priced below US$8.

FLIPPIN’ CHIPS

Stand tall Suffolk-based MGC Lighting has supplied LED lighting for a project involving 2.5m tall giraffes, used to mark the 50th anniversary of Colchester Zoo in Essex. The giraffe sculptures were sited in various locations around Colchester as part of the Stand Tall project, which ran from June until the end of August, and was used to raise funds for the zoo’s conservation charity, Action for the Wild. The large-scale public art event involved businesses in the area, which each sponsored a giraffe to the tune of £5,000. Each of the ruminants was then designed by a specially commissioned artist, bearing the name of its sponsor. MGC first became involved in the project last year, when the company supplied Flexistrip lighting for Stan, the campaign mascot, which was used in the official Christmas light switch on in Colchester last December. The company’s sales director, David Jackson is delighted to have played a role in Stand Tall: ‘As an international distributor we do a lot of business overseas, which we value highly - but there is something particularly special about being involved in a project that is on our doorstep. We supplied Impact Waterproof Flexistrip because it is ideal for outdoor use where moisture needs to be overcome; it also provides the flexibility required of the project and is simple to apply.’ The Stand Tall project was developed in partnership with arts, events and education company, Wild in Art - the team behind similar events successfully staged in the UK, Europe and Africa. From 9-12 September, the sculptures will be on show in central London, at the award-winning business environment, More London! On September 10, the giraffes will be auctioned, with all funds raised donated to Action for the Wild for future conservation projects.

Illinois-based Lumex has announced the global launch of its TitanBrite wireless bonded LED, featuring flip chips, that it claims are up to 15 per cent brighter than others in the market. In addition to the standard 3W and 6W LEDs, TitanBrite is also available in 9W. Flip chip technology offers several key performance benefits over traditional surface mount technology LEDs, including enhanced durability and heat dissipation and superior light performance. The enhanced shock- and vibration-resistance of wireless bonded LEDs stems from their durable design. Due to the absence of a wire bond and a hard epoxy layer, the LEDs are stronger and more robust when compared to standard, high power units. TitanBrite is available in both standard and custom colours and shapes. Standard shapes are circular and rectangular, but Lumex can design custom shape,s such as octagons or triangles to fit any application. Standard colours are warm white and cool white, while blue is available for custom products. Applications for this new LED include automotive, medical, appliances, military, and signage.

E X P E R T G AT H E R I N G From September 24-26, researchers and designers will discuss insights and trends in general, architectural and industrial lighting in Bregenz, Austria. Informative lectures, detailed workshops and networking opportunities combined with a diverse exhibition make the 2013 LED professional Symposium+Expo (LpS) a must attend event for experts in the areas of LED and OLED technology. Speaking of innovation and design, event director, Siegfried Luger said: ‘LED and OLED technologies are evolving dynamically. This means that lighting systems have to be improved and adapted continually. For this

reason it is imperative to be able to recognise technical trends for future innovations in this area. This year the LpS program encompasses design, technology and implementation, which creates a deeper understanding for the requirements of future lighting systems.’ When it comes to system performance and reliability, Prof. Tran Quoc Khanh commented: ‘The reliability of the LED system is the most important issue of the current LED luminaire technology, and has a substantial impact on the determination of the maintenance factor, which has to be defined

and determined by the luminaire manufacturers before the LED luminare installation can start in real LED lighting projects.’ The symposium will feature a number of lectures and a workshop that focus on this subject; including a talk by Matteo Meneghini from the University of Padua, titled Degradation.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

More value using less energy was at the top of the lighting shopping list at the newly-converted E-Center in Seelze, Hanover comprehensive lighting concept has been created for a German supermarket, which achieves sensationally low energy consumption values of less than 10 W/sq m. Brilliant light quality with the highest economic efficiency is achieved using an LED luminaire. NAVO, a new development from Ansorg, works especially well in the aisle areas of the E-Center to ensure a customer-friendly atmosphere that promotes sales. The lighting designer developed a concept that relies on high-performance LED solutions with extraordinary design possibilities. These are supplemented with appealing design accents using a variety of suspended luminaires. For each area of the supermarket, a lighting system has been implemented that is functional, aesthetically pleasing and economical. The area, which comprises 3,439sq m, has been skillfully sub-divided. In the thoroughfares, pendant Pizza downlights provide bright, glare-free light. Each aisle is lit with NAVO; its indirect reflector ensures bright, accentuated light , even with a distance of three metres between luminaires.

A neutral colour temperature (3000K) has proven successful for the fresh food offering, while frozen food compartments and the dispensary area are discreetly set off with a cooler colour temperature of 4000K. An upgrading of the freezer cabinets has been achieved with suspended luminaires from the Maxx Factory series, with wide-beam reflectors. These place design accents and ensure bright, homogeneous lighting. The customer enjoys a high degree of visual comfort, as the light source is almost invisible, and the focus is clearly on the goods on display. In the fruit and vegetables area it was felt necessary to generate colour brilliance, variety and a fresh ambiance, so Ansorg relied on a combination of shape and accent lighting with the LED spotlights, Take TKL, backed decorative suspended Classic Ball fittings with a reflective surface. Take TKL was also used at the till points, where it ensures functional and glare-free light. Behind the tills, suspended Piazza luminaires lead back to the mall area. Central to the philosophy of E-Centers are service counters offering fresh and high-quality meat and sausage products, as well as cheese

and fish. At the Kappe branch, the lighting solution not only meets the various requirements of protection for the goods, way-pointing and presentation. Special-offer signs and information panels are emphasised with recessed Punta spotlights, while gimbal-mounted Cardo LED luminaires illuminate the fresh goods. The light colour temperatures were selected in accordance with the specific products: the special LED fish modules with a high blue portion ensure a particularly cool, fresh look. Warm white at 2700K, on the other hand, flatters the cheese selection. A specially designed wines and spirits section, in the style of a bodega (a cellar with a vaulted brick ceiling), allows connoisseurs and enthusiasts to sample and select their purchases at their leisure. Recessed LED Punta spotlights are deliberately subdued, using a 2700K warm white light to ensure a cosy and inviting atmosphere. When compared to the site’s previous usage, more than 50 per cent energy saving has been achieved.

Spirit Circuits 023 9224 3000 | www.spiritcircuits.com Spirit Circuits Offers New Technology: Thermal Interface Materials Innovative PCB Manufacturer, Spirit Circuits, has a new addition to complement their current circuit board technologies. Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) is designed into electronic assemblies to aid and improve the thermal path, the removal of hot spots by heat spreading and selective cooling of components. Common usages for the technology are between power devices and heat sinks or from a PCB to a chassis or cold wall. The function of TIM is to compensate surface roughness, using a compressible or compliant material will fill micro voids, displace the air and bridge the gaps; the benefit of this is to increase the surface area available for heat conduction. Spirit Circuits has selected a range of TIM products picking the best options from each of the material producers; these include silicon pads, graphites, adhesives and gap filling products. Spirit’s standard material range will cover all the needs and requirements of the LED industry and a good proportion of the power electronics market. Spirit’s technical team will advise the best options available to match the thermal and electrical characteristics that customers require. In order to give customers a pad with the correct dimension, shape and location holes Spirit has invested in a CNC cutting machine. The selection was made based on quality of cut; the blade system the machine uses is quite unique in design and offers a cut quality on soft materials that other machines don’t. For advice on thermal management and how best to employ these materials or to receive a comparative quote please contact Dave Hunton Spirit’s TIM specialist on (0)2392 243000 or d.hunton@spiritcircuits.com.

highlight NO GAIN, NO PAIN Premium Lighting Solutions (PLS) has launched a finance scheme to make it easier for businesses to invest in energy efficient lighting. Under the scheme, PLS installs a tailored solution. Depending on the scale and type of project, a payment level and term is agreed on with the customer, but the payment is always linked to their energy savings. No additional, up-front investment is required. Keith Wyatt, commercial director, commented: ‘If a customer’s existing lighting system was costing £100 per month in energy bills, but the new efficient system is only costing £70, the customer pays out of the resulting £30 monthly savings. We are so confident that our technology will generate energy savings that if the customer doesn’t save any energy, they don’t pay.’

Our programs to save energy, protect water and avoid chemical waste are improving every day... not only in production, but also within our products. We are honoured and gratified to receive this award.’ Osram was chosen for the award in recognition of its significant contribution to the preservation of the environment through its manufacturing, production, and delivery processes and the fact that it has exceeded other companies in its effort to reduce impact on the environment.

Lighting Luton Luton Borough Council is the first local authority to roll out Harvard Engineering’s LeafNut remote monitoring and control system for street lighting, using the company’s finance package. Luton, one of the first authorities to trial the system back in 2007, tendered the contract for both the supply of equipment and the funding to purchase it. Harvard was able to tailor Luton’s payments to include the energy consumption used, the equipment costs and the carbon reduction savings that will be achieved. The scheme is designed so

that repayments start after the first quarter following installation, and importantly, Councils are guaranteed to never pay more than they are actually saving. Cllr Dave Taylor, portfolio holder for highways at Luton BC, said: ‘Like all local authorities across the country, here in Luton our challenge is to cut carbon emissions and mitigate the costs of continued energy price increases, against a background of reduced Government funding. ‘Our chosen solution allows us to cut emissions while saving money through prudent energy

management. In the current financial climate, Luton Borough Council could not afford to invest in this type of technology across its street lighting stock, but the way that the finance package is structured allows us to pay the costs from the savings made.’ Payback for the entire system is scheduled over 20 years, with Luton expected to reduce energy costs by as much as £4million over the same period. Harvard Engineering’s Russell Fletcher commented: ‘When it comes to installing innovative street lighting

solutions, the problem is not about convincing Councils of the benefits they are all under pressure to save energy and to reduce their carbon footprint – rather securing the finance to roll them out.’

LONDON

Billed as the hub of London Design Festival, Tent London makes a welcome seventh appearance in the capital. Oh, and in case of confusion... it’s not held in a tent WH AT T H E Y S AY

Carlsen, from Caroline Langfeldt

An ever-evolving design show launched just seven years ago, this annual East London hub of London Design Festival is well known for presenting extraordinary interior products from established independents and undiscovered talents. Spectacular installations, inspirational talks and presentations from country pavilions make Tent one of the largest and most popular design destinations during London Design Festival. Bringing together two floors of pure design – more than 200 companies from 25 countries, eight gallery shows and 40 super global brands present a vast and diverse range of furniture, lighting and interior products for the 20,000 regular visitors to feast on. Constantly evolving, always thought provoking; design trade show, Tent London has carved out an impressive reputation as the most creative of the hubs that anchor London Design Festival, a beacon for anyone looking to discover the best of home grown and overseas talent. Tent London has always been a show about ideas; and as such it fits perfectly with what is best about London as a design capital. In many ways, Tent embodies the qualities that make the city so appealing; independent, edgy, hard to pigeonhole, a place to find the unexpected and innovative in a market that all too often proves predictable and homogenous. Despite its growth over the last seven years, Tent London still manages to feel as far away from corporate as it is possible to be, yet products aren’t art

installations; they are chosen because they sell. This balance between creativity and commerce is no mean feat, and requires constant and careful curation by the show’s founders, Jimmy and Rachel MacDonald. A case in point, this year sees a big shift in emphasis away from the soft furnishings that proved a runaway success in previous seasons towards two growing market sectors. The first of these is undiscovered European talent; think Vera & Kyte, Atelier Violeta Galan, Grand, Orée, Philipp Aduatz and Tokio. These labels sit well alongside UK-based established independents including Studio Jon Male, Chisel & Mouse, Thomas & Vines, Suzanne Goodwin, Room39, Erica Wakerly, Bold & Noble, Inca Starzinsky, Curiousa & Curiousa and Parris Wakefield. We are effectively hardening up the edges of the show and broadening the offer to better reflect current trends in the market,’ explained show founder Jimmy MacDonald. One of the most keenly anticipated events during the Design Festival’s talk circuit will be Tent’s Super Talks programme, this year under the theme, ‘Mobilised’. Super Talks aims to engage with audiences in a more participative and unstructured way; allowing a free flowing exchange of original ideas, unchecked by dry Powerpoint presentations. The overall programme will be split into four key elements; Scenario Labs, Inspiring Debates, Supermobile and Super Exchange, and will include talks, demonstrations, workshops and idea sharing sessions.

‘We want to create a really audiencefocused programme, breaking down barriers and engendering a free and easy forum for the swapping of ideas,’ explained MacDonald. Tent London’s Country Showcases have always been an essential bedrock of the show, a chance to view previously unseen work from more than 100 designers and companies, hand picked from around the world. This year sees the largest collection to date, with 100% Norway back celebrating its 10th anniversary, plus Made in Bergen, a welcome second

design showcase from Norway. Fresh Taiwan returns this year and is joined by the Hungarian Investment & Trade Agency, the Crafts Council of Ireland, Artesanía de Galicia and the Ukrainian Design Pavilion. Breaking up the booths will be Project Spaces. This is a chance for architects and designers to experiment with ideas and processes, three dimensional environments, colour, material, light and human interaction. Once again, at Tent London it comes back to the all-important propagation of ideas; what keeps this show consistently fresh and inspiring.

DECOREX After a long history at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, the move to Kensington Palace seems to be proving popular for Decorex International WHAT THEY S AY Widely recognised as one of the most important international design events, the show provides visitors with an extraordinary opportunity to source new products in one location from some of the most prominent names in the design world, along with new talent exhibiting at the show for the first time. Exceptional quality, beautiful materials and outstanding craftsmanship are just some of the characteristics that Decorex exhibitors share. Brand director, Simone du Bois explained the rationale behind the move: ‘After 12 years at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea having recently granted planning permission for the Masterpiece show, decided that there should be only two major events per year on the site, which meant we needed to look for a new home. The new site at Perks Field and the Orangery is far more accessible and central for transport than Chelsea. ‘We are lucky enough to be able to have our restaurant and cafe in the historic Orangery, and this year we have two feature tents on the front lawns. The beautiful surroundings of Kensington Palace gardens provide the perfect background setting for Britain’s most established and respected design show. ‘Our exhibitors this year have embraced the new location with exciting plans for stand designs and product launches to reflect this. The atmosphere at Decorex encapsulates the very best elements of our industry, the friendliness and respect amongst our exhibitors who have come together over the previous few days to transform blank canvas,’ into visual feasts, creates an air of welcoming community spirit. The excitement of new product launches and inspirational presentations coupled

with the discovery of new companies means there is a lot to pack into a visit. ‘2011 and 2012 reflected increasing visitor numbers so we have every anticipation that the new exciting venue will continue this trend. ‘Lighting is an area of Decorex that has continued to grow in stature over the last few years, and there is a wide range of lighting design ranging from contemporary to traditional, all stunningly crafted. ‘Personally it is hard to choose favourites, as there are so many to name, but some highlights to watch out for are Barroncelli, which without a doubt every year never fail to impress us; look for Craig Jenkins unique pieces in the Champagne bar; Tom Kirk, Tigermoth and Boatswain, returning CTO Lighting, and newcomer Curiousa & Curiousa with her beautiful glass pendants; Collier Webb and of course the wonderful Ochre with their locally crafted installations: Harlequin London launch some stunning Italian Venini glass lighting and Terzani will showcase their exceptional chandeliers. French companies to look for: Le Deun, a favourite with his contemporary LED pieces, newcomers, Art et Floritude and

traditional, house Delisle and of course Pouenat Ferronnier with their collection of 12 inspirational lighting pieces from leading French design names. ‘For those who are excited by the technical side of lighting solutions and the beauty of switches, there is much to find with newcomers, Light IQ and the Wandsworth Group, which has been working on the refurbishment of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s apartment.’ The historic site of Kensington Palace has provided the inspiration for the theme of this year’s show, the Silk Route, when silks, porcelain and other luxury goods were introduced to Europe. The theme has been used as a reference by Kit Kemp, for her design of the main entrance, as she explained: ‘Our trader of spices and glittering silks arrives back to his hideaway on a rainy autumn London day. His cloak and hat hang, and his bedroom is a treasure chest of souvenirs from his travels to marketplaces in the Orient. The spice colours of the East and the dappled light of an early autumn day create a glowing scene. The chandelier of a glittering galleon above the bed reminds him of travels of the past and those to come in the future.’ Martin Brudnizki Design Studio will be creating the Champagne bar with an alternative twist. The design will seek to demonstrate the Studio’s love for the interior design process, and will capture the excitement of the build phase of a project in its raw state. In a new central location, the bar will offer a welcome respite from the surrounding crowds.

100% DESIGN The UK’s largest design event takes a new direction in 2013 W HAT T H E Y S AY This year’s visual concept and show theme, Creative Balance, provides the exhibition’s visual identity and an exploration of creative process and its value in the commercial world. The curation of the show will again focus on four industry sectors, each arranged around a central hub – interiors, office, kitchen & bathroom, eco, design & build - creating clear navigation for visitors. The hubs will showcase the work of thought leaders across the design community, with space to meet, learn and be inspired. The Central Bar, at the heart of the show, is reached through a 66m long tunnel, designed by Studio Design UK. This year, the interiors hub will explore the growing emphasis on 3D printing as an accessible method of production. A new global competition staged with creative collaboration agency, Talenthouse will see selected pieces produced before and during the show within a specially designed interior. Issues of sustainability, quality and empowerment of individual makers will be demonstrated and debated live. The expanded Interiors section will also house a newly-established marketplace for accessories. Clockwise from top: 7 Gods - Maki, Toby House - Opticals Black, 7 Gods Sarita, Preciosa Lighting - Inspiral detail, Plant and Moss - Akita Desk Lamp

The office hub will be created by design practice, TILT presenting the dramatic Hanging Room concept, in which suspended room elements can be lowered and raised to continually change the hub’s function. The practice is at the forefront of co-design, which integrates end users into the design process to create spaces uniquely tailored for the communities using them. The kitchen & bathroom hub will incorporate the show’s restaurant, serving specially chosen seasonal foods that can be grown domestically. A separate installation will present the latest technology, trends and concepts in the bathroom industry. The eco, design and build hub will be produced by London based materials resource studio, Material Lab. The ever-changing installation will inspire interaction with some of the world’s most innovative building and architectural materials. 100% Design has expanded its International Pavilions, taking 3,000sqm of space within Earls Court 1. Design regions from France, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, South Korea, Taiwan and China have already been confirmed. This section’s hub will be informed by London’s status as a global meeting point for innovative and talent across the creative industries. A new feature is the Gateway exhibition, providing opportunities for early-career designers to be recognised at the show. Working with some of the UK’s leading design organisations, Gateway links the two Earls Court spaces.

Initiatives include Delight in Light with the Lighting Industry Association, Future Pioneers with Design Council and a showcase of recent Royal College of Art graduates. Gateway also highlights established British excellence through Design Guild Mark alongside special exhibits from leading UK architectural institutions. Along the show’s central boulevards, Emerging Brands provides a platform for design companies that have been in operation for five years or less; showcasing new products and ideas for interior and product design. British designer, Benjamin Hubert will create the 2013 auditorium, providing a dramatic backdrop to Talks With 100% Design. Industry Association. All four corners of 100% Design will be illuminated by the UK’s brightest lighting designers as they showcase their ideas. ‘Having been a judge for the awards for a number of years, it is fantastic to be working with an organisation like 100% Design,’ said Simon Terry, innovation & brand director at Anglepoise. ‘Finally, these budding young designers will be getting an international platform that can propel them into the media limelight, and a fast track into a sustainable design career.’ Established in 1985, the Lighting Industry Association Awards have become the premier competition for lighting design students in the UK. Delight in Light is a new movement created to encourage excellence in lighting design. This is a mutually beneficial situation for all. Firstly, for the lighting industry, which strives for excellence and the high quality design can provide. Secondly, the designers, through a closer liaison with the industry and exposure at high-profile events, and of course thirdly, the end users that will enjoy a better quality of lighting in their environment. The Delight in Light design Ccompetition sits firmly at the core of this direction and the LIA aims to provide the perfect platform for many exciting new lighting designs, and offer young people to better understand the industry and interact with it. Toby House ‘We focus on eye-catching standout designs, that are often complex and experimental. We work with suppliers across the UK lighting industry very closely managing the manufacturing chain ourselves directly, and bringing products to market ourselves. Our products are hand made in the UK, so were we’re more suited to a contract market than a retail market, and that’s why were exhibiting at 100% Design this year. We want to showcase our new

ranges and services to the whole of the UK contract market: interior designers, architects, specifiers and others, and we believe that 100% Design is the best place to meet contract professionals across a range of sectors. ‘It will be our first time at 100%. We have exhibited at smaller shows, including Clerkenwell Design Week several times, and have become best known for our pioneering Beach Ball lampshades; the playful PVC beach balls we render rock hard on the inside, yet they look soft on the outside, to create fantastic colourful arrays of surreal summery ‘Bulle’ shades. ‘However in 2013, we are bringing a battery of new ranges to market, equally iconic and inspiring (we hope!) with the intention of broadening our range and appeal. We hope this newly structured proposition, with a more complex reach and diversified end-usage potential will connect and match with the mix of discerning UK creative industry professionals that form the base of 100% Design’s visitors. ‘We are looking forward to meeting the industry in September to forge further links and opportunities and to share in the cumulative growth potential that having so many of the UKs finest professionals under just one roof offers.’ Toby Saunders www.TOBYhouse.co.uk

We have been regular visitors since the show started, and always really enjoy the atmosphere. ‘Our company specialises in designing lighting for interior projects. We decided to create our own line of products, to make our designs available to all, and we think that launching them at 100% Design is the perfect location to reach potential clients and the public. We also feel very proud to be asked to do an installation of a moving light in the interior section of the exhibition. The clock’s ticking British retailers are at risk from unexpected, hefty costs as an EU ban on halogen lamps comes into effect this month, warns Geoff Coffin at Planned Lighting Maintenance ccording to Planned Lighting Maintenance (PLM), many business owners remain unaware of the upcoming EU ban on halogen lighting, and they risk facing unexpected costs when their existing lamps need replacing. PLM is highlighting the potential impact of the Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive, to help retailers avoid costly surprises when the latest stage of legislation comes into effect this month. Bans on MR16 low voltage halogen, GU10, AR111 and capsule lights are set to follow in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively. Geoff Coffin, sales and marketing director at the retail and commercial lighting maintenance specialist says: ‘Rather than being an additional headache for businesses, already facing tough trading conditions, this legislation can actually help them minimise costs by investing in energy efficient lighting. ‘Taking the time to understand and plan their replacement programmes now can reap huge benefits in the future. ‘Lower wattage lamps with improved technology to maintain or improve light levels, and new advances in LED luminaires all reduce energy consumption and, as a result, electricity bills. Indeed we typically expect to see a return on investment within 36-months of installation.’ P R O O F I N T HE PUDDI NG

Fat Face is one retail company that has already benefited from future-proofing its lighting, after an LED trial at the Southsea branch revealed potential maintenance and energy savings across Fat Face’s entire estate over a five-year contract period of

around £600,000. This has been achieved by replacing all mains and low voltage halogen GU10, MR16, AR111 and GLS lamps with direct replacement LED lamps. Coffin explained: ‘As well as increasing light levels and significantly reducing the ambient temperature in the store, Fat Face is now protected against future legislation. ‘What’s more, the energy savings and reduced maintenance costs achieved, effectively cover the cost of our lighting maintenance and its investment in LED technology.’

Contact PLM has produced a White Paper to help businesses understand the new legislation and the options available to them. It can be downloaded from www.plannedlighting.co.uk/ legislation-lighting.php

Which lamps are affected... and when? The classification of lamps in the halogen family is currently causing the most confusion, as it relates to the energy usage, performance in terms of light output and lamp life. This would seem to be straightforward, but lower output and less efficient halogen lamps are to be phased out at later stages than some others, which arguably are actually more efficient. The latest stage of legislation comes into effect in September 2013. Bans on MR16 low voltage halogen, GU10, AR111 and capsule

lights will follow in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively but a re-classification of some of these lamps in September this year will potentially change the dates again. Low voltage capsule, AR111 and mains halogen GU10 are Class C, and will be banned in September 2016 (providing the classifications are not changed in September 2013, the main review in April 2014 or the technical review in 2015). The main lamp in this family is the MR16 diochroic in 35w and 50w variants only.

Currently Class C, these lamps need to reach Class B by September 2013, in order to avoid being banned this year. This would seem strange as the lamps that are Class C above are allowed until 2016. These banning dates and classes refer to the standard life and output products in this lamp family with long life IRC (Infra Red Coated) or energy efficient derivatives currently excluded from this process. These will potentially be included in the technical review in 2015.

n the current economic meltdown, with the UK narrowly missing a triple-dip recession, every penny spent on a company’s marketing budget is under scrutiny, and yet marketing is more crucial than ever. As the market squeezes, how do you make sure it is your product or service that is at the forefront, and how can you open up new opportunities and new markets? The answer can be a clear, managed, costed PR campaign. TH E GOLDEN RULES:

1 Set clear objectives. 2 Identify who you want to reach and through what means. 3 Pinpoint key messages what makes your products ‘special’ and what benefits will they bring to users? 4 Measure your outcomes and use the knowledge to adjust and enhance your future campaigns.

Shine a light At a time when our domestic lighting industry needs to stay strong in the face of ever-growing competition, Alf Lombardi of Shrewdd Marketing believes in strategic PR to get ahead

Shrewdd set out with exactly this task for Harvard Engineering. In spite of the economic climate, the lighting controls company has ambitious growth plans, both in the UK and internationally. Our brief was to increase awareness of the company’s key products and strengths, particularly within some key vertical markets and communicate key messages, including innovation and UK manufacturing. All Harvard’s products are manufactured in the UK - an important market differentiator. We also had an educative role to play; in this instance explaining the benefits of dimming street lights rather than turning them off, and how every LED lighting system requires a unique driver design. Our first task was to identify the company’s target audiences, the key messages and the methods of communication, including online and print media, as well as social media. We also looked to identify awards that the company could enter to raise the company’s profile and its products.

A SUCCES S S TOR Y

The results of the strategy can be clearly measured: the company’s profile has increased across the UK and new international sectors, with visits to its website up by 36 per cent; the Twitter campaign more than tripled the number of followers; and an email campaign list averages an open rate of 30 per cent, 8.1 per cent above the industry average. During 2012, we developed a media relations campaign that secured coverage in 43 key magazines as well as in regional and national newspapers, and 98 online stories, explaining the benefits of upgrading lighting, and introducing Harvard to overseas stakeholders. In addition, adverts placed in 31 magazines reached more than 300,000 decision makers. ROI was well in excess of ten times the investment. The website was translated into each of the key European languages and a social media campaign was developed, including market-specific lighting blogs. We ensured a presence at the key lighting exhibitions in the UK and Europe, and entered the company for several awards. It was subsequently named as the Judges’ Choice winner of the Financial Mail’s ‘Made in Britain’ Awards, and was a UK national finalist for the Innovation Award in the 2012/13 European Business Awards. An email campaign targeting the UK and Europe focused on these awards and other key events. A time of financial squeeze is not the time to cut back on marketing; it’s rather an essential time for companies to maximise their presence. But make sure that your strategy is clearly defined and that expenditure versus outcome is measured to make every penny count.

IMPRESSIVE GREENCHIP NXP brings high efficiency to 12V MR16 lamps with a dimmable LED controller. The SSL3401 is a compact, cost-effective solution that’s compatible with a wide range of dimmers and transformers. The SSL3401 offers compatibility with an exceptionally wide range of dimmers and transformers – working with more than 80 per cent of the most common combinations – in a compact form factor that fits all commonly used MR16 GU5.3 and AR111 housings and sockets. Supporting an ambient temperature range up to 105 degrees C, the SSL3401 also provides temperature rollback protection. Based on NXP GreenChip technology, the SSL3401 generates a stable and accurate current while dimming down to below five per cent of maximum light output in most common practical situations. While maximum lamp power depends on the thermal design of the lamp, a typical 7W MR16 LED lamp using the SSL3401 achieves THD below 15 per cent, power factor above 0.9, efficiency up to 78 per cent and LED ripple current below ±10 per cent. ‘Energy-conscious consumers and businesses worldwide are keen to replace halogen lamps with LEDs – but making the switch to dimmable MR16 LEDs is not always as straightforward as one would expect,’ explained Ryan Zahn, general manager, lighting solutions at NXP Semiconductors. ‘With the SSL3401, we’ve designed a compact singlestage controller IC specifically for dimmable MR16 LED lamps, and tested it extensively for compatibility with a wide range of dimmers and transformers. ‘By helping retrofit lamp manufacturers to reduce costs, we also hope to ease the transition from halogen to LED on a broader scale, particularly as 12V MR16 lamps emerge as a popular choice in both commercial and residential lighting.’

Miniature woodland Until just a few years ago, the concrete walkways of London’s Southbank Centre were empty, bleak areas. Despite being part of the UK’s largest arts centre and surrounding some of the city’s most iconic venues, the passageways led nowhere useful for most people. But then new management realised that with a little forethought, the areas could become destinations in themselves. They began to commission art installations, and this year, Southbank Centre teamed up with Cornwall-based environmental education charity, the Eden Project, to create a woodland garden, entitled Timber! for the summer-long Festival of Neighbourhood with MasterCard, which has been lit with ETC Source Four Mini luminaires. Southbank’s technical manager, Roger Hennigan explained: ‘I needed a fixture which would be able to project a powerful, focusable beam of light – using break-up gobos to give a dappled effect not only on the woodland, but also on the artificial turf. They also needed to be small: in this relatively compact space, we didn’t want them getting in the way. ‘The tungsten source really brings out the best in the natural wood colours, and the shutters prevent light from bleeding onto the ceiling. Focussing the fixtures was very easy – I just reached up and adjusted them. No need for ladders!’ The fixture is available in a portable version, a canopy-mount design with an integral transformer, or a Eutrac adapter with integral transformer, as Hennigan used at the Southbank Centre.

GlassGuard, manufacturer of fragment retention lamps, has produced a brochure showcasing its range of luminaires, which are designed for applications that have a need to protect lighting, especially businesses involved in the food processing and packaging industries. All luminaires featured in the brochure come with the added value and protection of GlassGuard BlackBand fragment retention lamps for a safer lighting solution. It includes detailed information on the SB range of luminaires, designed to maximise a combination of energy efficiency, improved lighting and safer maintenance qualities. In addition, the brochure explains the range of optional extras, including LumaStat, a hand-held daylight sensor control which works with the SB range to make the most of ambient daylight and deliver energy savings of up to 60 per cent. To get yours, available in English, German, French and Spanish language versions, download a copy from www.glassguard.co.uk

Small packages The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) has developed an aptly-named mini guide to show how lighting controls can play a key role in helping deliver the energy efficiency requirements for lighting required by UK Building Regulations. Revisions to Building Regulations documents are expected to come into force in October, and the guide has been written based on the LIA’s best understanding of what the revised requirements will be. The guide, together with more general information, can be downloaded from the LIA website, at www.thelia.org.uk.

If we could flick a switch and make people feel better, we’d do it in a heartbeat - wouldn’t we?

ellbeing isn’t only about our physical state; it covers the mental and emotional aspects of our lives too, and our wellbeing is directly affected by our surroundings – not least the lighting that surrounds us. David Jackson of MGC Lighting agrees: ‘Lighting has a perceptible effect on peoples’ emotional wellbeing. For years, lighting has been used by designers and architects to enhance peoples’ experiences, or provoke certain emotional responses within commercial environments, such as shops, offices, theatres and restaurants. ‘Over recent years, the positive effect of lighting on mood has been applied with great success to the healthcare sector. Trials at a variety of hospitals have found that, when used effectively in healthcare settings alongside functional lighting, well-designed ambient lighting can help aid the healing process by lifting patients’ moods, in turn enhancing both patient and staff experience.’ And it’s not just patient moods that can be affected – their recovery is paramount. According to Lyco’s Glen Harper: ‘Installing LED into a healthcare environment will have a drastic effect on energy consumption and your carbon footprint, but it can also be useful in preventing the spread of bacteria and germs. Because lighting maintenance is virtually eliminated, there’ll be no regular changing of bulbs to unsettle dead bugs, bacteria, and dust. For the same reason - because LED units don’t need to be accessed - their housing can be comprehensively sealed and thus protected against bacteria.’ IN TH EATRE

Fibre optics for the medical sector are most commonly associated with endoscopes: the light that is transmitted through a single optical fibre can illuminate an object inside the body sufficient to allow a surgeon to detect any anomalies, photograph and correct them with an intense beam of light, resulting in little or no bleeding. It would therefore be safe to say that fibre optic technology has transformed surgical procedures in the last forty years. But what other uses could fibre optic lighting offer the medical sector, other than helping to save lives? Louise How of Absolute Action explains: ‘Fibre optics can provide true colour, shadow free, precise, directional lighting in the operating room. One light source can be used to light a multitude of flexible, multi-directional light heads equipped with multi-faceted reflectors, to provide pure white light without any variation in intensity. ‘If operating room lights can be made multi-positional, it follows that they are inherently more useful for the surgical team, who can position them according to circumstances. Furthermore, given that operating theatres contain hazardous materials, such as flammable oxygen and anaesthetics as well as highly sensitive electro-magnetic equipment, the cold light provided by fibre optics ticks all the safety boxes. Additionally, it reduces the need for air-conditioning since the light source can be housed in a separate room.’

What about clinics and outpatient areas? Surely, good lighting to see and be seen by could be combined with something to soothe patients’ fears? In central Denmark, Silkeborg Hospital’s management commissioned lighting designer, Rune Tønnes to help effect just such a system, starting in its radiology department. ‘One of the challenges was, being south facing the X-ray and MRI rooms were flooded with daylight. Clinicians had to close the blinds in order to work, but were then left with poor artificial lighting,’ explained Tønnes. In the control rooms, certain light levels and temperatures were necessary to ensure monitors could be seen easily. Tønnes specified a mixture of primary reds and blues for viewing the scanner monitors and cool blues for ambient lighting, with a bright spotlight for reading notes. In the X-ray suite, staff had struggled to see the targetting light on the photographic plates. Tønnes continued: ‘Now, when the X-ray aiming light is activated, the lighting changes automatically to primary blue, enabling easy viewing of the machine’s warm white lamp. Turning the lamp off restores the normal lighting. ‘In the CT rooms, lighting serves a dual purpose - to assist staff and help relax patients. If someone’s heart were being scanned, they would understandably be anxious. So rather than clinical white walls, the lighting provides warm, comforting, soft colours for the patient.’ Lighting control is provided by an ETC Unison Paradigm system, which, Tønnes explained, ‘is the only system capable of doing exactly what I wanted. The clinicians are all trained in how to use the lighting, and because each has their individual preference, they can select the colours which suit them best.’ Interestingly, the lighting is still T5 fluorescent tubes, but Tønnes specified a mixture of warm and cool blue tubes, which can be set as required for the specific task and programmed in a 24-hour sequence. ‘Children can get a colour change sequence,’ expalined Tønnes, ‘because the staff thought that changing colours would make it a more pleasant experience for them – and, of course, distract them.’

Little as we know about the way in which we are affected by form and colour and light, we do know this: that they have an actual and physical effect. Florence Nightingale The next phase of the project includes improved lighting for the waiting room and medical secretaries’ areas, with the same functionality of colour temperature control, task-dependent lighting and daylight harvesting. A Paradigm system with lighting designed by Rune Lighting will then be installed in the hospital’s new A&E department. ‘This is the first of what we hope will be a number of regional hospitals across Scandinavia to be fitted with modern, contemporary lighting powered by ETC Paradigm,’ explained Søren Jørgensen, project manager for Bico, the equipment supplier for the Silkeborg project. ‘Hospital users traditionally have had cold, unpleasant lighting, in addition to the stress of whatever procedure they are undergoing. Now, at least we can make the whole experience a little more pleasing to the eye.’

Glen Harper of Lyco suggests conversion to an LED scheme as quickly as possible to save money. ‘Though LED lighting is expected to eventually fall in price through cheaper industrialised processes, the money that institutions burn through inefficient lighting schemes makes the waiting game an expensive one!’ he warned. ‘An LED conversion requires a significant up-front investment, but without exception, all investors see a payback on that investment within a short space of time. Healthcare businesses of all types, including trusts, private hospitals, hospices, and care homes, can vastly decrease energy use and carbon emissions with a switch to LED.’ Harper continued: ‘LED ceiling panels and downlights provide high quality, balanced lighting in waiting rooms. A warm light in these areas helps patients to relax, though it should be used in conjunction with natural daylight wherever possible, which helps to connect visitors to the outside world and makes them feel less isolated. ‘Dimmable solutions can work well, because then ambient light can be controlled in accordance with the intensity of incoming daylight. Ceiling panels, however, produce a wonderfully diffuse and evenly spread light that looks very natural. Depending on the type of waiting

room, lighting in these areas can be more decorative, and designed to make people relax. Wall, table, or floor lamps are not uncommon adornments, and in many cases will be served well by LED lamps. The Bologna 160 LED wall light is a dedicated fitting from Astro requiring an up-front investment, but once installed, it will yield many years of unmaintained service, thanks to top-quality Cree LEDs.’ Louise How believes clinic patients could benefit from mood lighting too. ‘The importance of careful lighting of clinics and waiting rooms is twofold: patients need to be able to navigate from A to B without risking injury, and they also need lighting that is soothing and restful. Let’s face it, people attending such facilities are more often than not in a nervous state. It is not trite to assume that the right lighting can help to create a healing environment. Light impacts how a person feels, a person’s sense of wellbeing and emotional health. Consequently, modern, forward-thinking health practitioners consider the ambience of a clinic to be extremely important to both the patients undergoing treatment, and the staff who work there on a daily (and nightly) basis. Coloured lighting can be used to create a peaceful effect that makes a hospital seem less intimidating.’

Stimulating, fun lighting can help children relax and feel safe It is with this in mind that Absolute Action worked with architect, Frederick Gibberd and Partners to create a welcoming ambience for the reception area at BUPA’s headquarters in central London, by highlighting the curved reception desk and specially commissioned works of art with decorative fibre optic lights. The frosted glass within each barrel-shaped output fitting softens and broadens the beam to deliver an attractive pool of light to the underside of the top glass panel - and glare is eliminated. A warm 3000K colour temperature lamp was used, which blends with the rich tones of the reception desk. W E L C O M I NG WARDS

‘Lighting can have a positive impact on people at an emotionally stressful time,’ asserts How. ‘Stimulating, fun lighting can help children relax and feel safe. Similarly, neutral and serene lighting can have much the same effect on older patients. The benefits people derive from the ambience of spas and health clubs has not been lost on the new generation of holistic-thinking health practitioner: large open airy spaces, with gentle light can help patients recover more quickly.’ When it comes to colourful surroundings, nothing beats Arizona’s Phoenix Children’s Hospital. When Dallas-based architectural firm, HKS performed a $538m expansion of the hospital, the renovation design was based on the theme of a desert flower blooming at night. Scott Oldner, principal of Scott Oldner Lighting Design, helped HKS form a real oasis in the desert with innovative interior and exterior lighting that reflected the project’s theme. Oldner specified Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting fixtures to create an immersive escape for patients and their families, a distraction from the medical problems surrounding them. For the exterior design, Oldner had to comply with a number of up-lighting and building lighting restrictions. He wanted to illuminate exterior architectural elements, to turn the building into a beacon that could be easily seen from all directions, while adhering to the local Dark Sky ordinance and the project’s sustainability and budget requirements. LED lighting fixtures were the perfect choice. Oldner used iColor Accent Powercore (now specified with iColor Accent MX Powercore) to outline the building’s distinctive architectural fins, and to serve as a canvas for artistic, animated coloured displays. Long ribbons of iColor Accent Powercore fixtures descend the front of the building, and merge into runs of iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures in the lobby area, visually connecting outside and in. Entering the building, patients and visitors find themselves in a cheerful, colourful lobby up-lit with rows of concealed, colour-changing fixtures. The main corridor features a water wall that comes as a bit of a surprise to first time visitors. The initial design called for an indoor water wall fountain, but due to costs another alternative needed to be found. ‘Why not do it with light?’ Oldner suggested. HKS lined the wall from floor to ceiling with textured, wave-patterned acrylic, then Oldner used iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures to up-light each section of the acrylic with a water-like effect, incorporating varying shades of blue and aqua. To add more life to the wall, he used theatrical gobos in various shapes to project coloured patterns. Finally, embedded

iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures in the ceiling domes were used to line the hallway with bright, vivid colours. All of the interior and exterior LED lighting fixtures are controlled by a single Philips’ lighting controller. Due to budget constraints, LED lighting fixtures couldn’t be specified throughout the hospital. In those areas where he used traditional cove lights, Oldner specified fixtures that the hospital could easily retrofit with LED replacements for additional energy savings in the future. Interior designer, Sandra Miller suggested embedding iColor Tile MX fixtures in the walls for way-finding and interactive fun down at toddler level. iColor Cove MX Powercore fixtures also illuminate the back walls of the retail store display boxes, while halogen spotlights, properly dimmed, set off the merchandise in white against the full colour backdrop. ‘From the start of the design process, beautiful, magical colour was required for the desert blooms concept, the brainchild of HKS,’ said Oldner. ‘Only Philips Color Kinetics had the quality, specialised product offerings, and customer service needed to realise our vision.’ By turning his lighting vision into a reality, Oldner satisfied the expectations of HKS, while creating a carefully orchestrated experience for the hospital’s visitors. ‘We gave the children and their families something unique, vibrant, entertaining, and full of life, to distract them from the challenges they face entering the building.’ GET WELL

When it comes to aiding recovery, David Jackson said: ‘Research has found that patients recover more quickly if they are not depressed. The right lighting can help regulate natural processes within the body, such as the sleep cycle, leading to better sleep duration – an essential component for recovery.’ Of course, it’s not only ambient lighting that has a part to play in recovery; good task lighting is vital for patient wellbeing, as well as staff and visitor comfort and safety, as How explains: ‘Being able to sit and read in bed with a light on that does not disturb others in the ward, and which can be precisely and safely directed toward a distracting book or ever a pair of knitting needles could be just what the doctor (and the other patients) ordered. ‘The gooseneck touch-activated bed head reading light, for example, was originally designed for the most exclusive hotels, but has caught on in the private hospital sector as an ideal, safe method of allowing

patients to read at night with minimal disruption to others, and with no risk of harm to themselves as there is no heat or electricity at output. A slim-line, low voltage projector is tucked neatly behind the bedhead and the light is conveyed along fibre optics to the flex-and-stay gooseneck output. ‘The light is easy to manipulate to almost any angle and can be dimmed or brightened by touch, is energy efficient, and easy to maintain. Medical practitioners can find the directional quality of the fibre optic light handy when examining patients, not least because it provides a very white light that is perfect for distinguishing true colour variations in skin tone, wounds, etc. In bedrooms or wards, Harper believes: ‘a warmcoloured light can create a welcoming, soothing effect, while flattering skin tones and providing a general feeling of wellbeing. ‘For overall bedroom lighting, recessed downlights, such as JCC’s Fireguard LED7 spotlight, offer a high specification, and using just 7W of power they’ll potentially save heavily on energy costs. Dimmable and non-dimmable lights feature in this range, with dimmable lighting allowing further opportunity to simultaneously create ambience and save energy. ‘Also for bedrooms, dedicated reading lights will encourage patients to pick up a book, especially since they’re invariably switched and easy to turn on and off. Wall-mounted LED reading lights are space-conscious, and extremely energy-efficient.’ TH E F UTURE

The final thought goes to David Jackson, who adds a whole new area of healthcare lighting to explore: ‘The other area where lighting can be used to great effect is in sensory rooms, where lighting, textures and fragrances are used to stimulate the senses of children and adults with special needs,’ he said. ‘In this particular application, lighting is an incredibly powerful visual aid.’

he Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Schmerztherapie (centre for interdisciplinary pain therapy, or ZIS) at the Munich clinic, Klinikum Rechts der Isar, is the first pain centre to include biologically effective light in its therapy program. ZIS is conducting scientific studies to systematically evaluate the effect of the new Osram light therapy on patients. Doctors from three different fields treat chronic pain sufferers in the Munich pain centre, ZIS. The new light therapy concept permits particularly high illuminances, and creates a light colour, which imitates the effects of daylight. ‘We know that light not only influences our sleep-wake cycle, but also our psychological wellbeing,’ explained Prof. Thomas Tölle, director of ZIS. ‘We hope that by giving patients a concentrated dose of light, they will sleep better at night, be more alert and focused by day, and will have a more positive relationship with their bodies overall.’ C OS T- EFFE C T I VE RE LI E F

The system is based on LED and fluorescent lamp light with an intelligent control system for the production of different light colours and patterns. Biologically effective illuminances of up to 4,000 Lux are now possible in the physiotherapy and group therapy rooms, as well as in the reception and waiting area - eight times brighter than ordinary lighting used, for example in offices, and close to natural daylight conditions. To maximise the number of institutions, which can benefit, the lighting solution was designed to be cost-efficient and adaptable for other pain centres, clinics and doctors’ practices. Osram’s concept does not use a special luminaire to achieve the alternation between warm and cold white light, which is crucial to the biological effect. It operates with two standard Novaluna luminaires from Siteco, which can be activated or deactivated via a light management system in accordance with the DALI standard. ‘As warm white and cold white light is produced by two separate luminaires, this increases the number of luminaires mounted on the ceiling, but greatly reduces the costs of the entire solution,’ Andreas Pickelein, project manager, light and quality of life at Osram clarified. For Tölle, too, this was one of the fundamental criteria: ‘What is the use of the most intelligent light solution if no doctor can afford it?’ asked the president of the Deutscher Schmerzgesellschaft (German pain society), which is currently examining the effect of the innovative light system on pain sufferers as part of a scientific study. ‘Once the investigations confirm the expected positive effect on pain sufferers, we hope to see widespread use of the solution in other therapy rooms.’

Contact Osram www.osram.com Siteco www.siteco.com

We hope that by giving patients a concentrated dose of light, they will sleep better at night, be more alert and focused by day, and will have a more positive relationship with their bodies overall DOCTOR KNOWS BEST Some 12 million people in Germany suffer from chronic pain. All too frequently, this causes psychological strain and impacts the sufferer’s work and private life. In an interview, ZIS director, Prof Thomas Tölle, explained why light was included as a decisive factor in the therapy concept. Professor Tölle, have you experimented with the effect of light in the past? No, not yet. But as a psychologist and neurologist, I have often been confronted with the question of whether light could influence the mental state. My conviction has always been that the use of light could influence sleep, mood and hence also quality of life. Our pain therapy centre now has the possibility of systematically investigating the effect of light on patients suffering from severe pain. It is high time that light’s importance to human beings was documented. What role does light play in pain therapy? Everybody feels that light has a positive influence on the body. We at ZIS would now like to find out whether it can be integrated in a therapeutic process. We will be monitoring the effect of light therapy scientifically. This will enable us to ascertain whether, for instance, the biological mechanisms which light is known to trigger – such as changes in melatonin production – actually occur in the patients.

How are you proceeding with this at ZIS? Our prime concern is the subjective response to the light. We would like to discover whether patients even notice the change in light – whether the light makes them more active. Emotional changes are another issue – whether patients experience an improvement in mood. Another key aspect is sleep. Patients often note a reduction in pain if they have slept well and managed to relax. The sleep-wake cycle can sometimes be improved with the aid of drugs, but we believe that stimulation of the retina with intensive light also has this effect, and we are trying to develop a causal link between additional light, better moods and reduced pain. How has the light concept been developed and implemented? Patients come into continual contact with the light in all the rooms in the centre, where they spend the whole day. The light manufacturer, Osram has already seen to the technical implementation. Osram developed various concepts, taking account of the room sizes and

arrangements, as well as the light variations at different times of day. The objective was to ensure that the light reaching the lower areas of the retina was ideal, as this is the location of the receptors, which trigger the biological effects on brain functions.

How are patients responding to the light concept? Many patients have initially commented on the intensity of the light, which they are unused to. They have, however, reported that one soon gets used to it and noticed that they experienced a rise in activity levels. These are spontaneous reactions obtained without asking questions that could prompt the patients. How pioneering is the light concept? If the light concept works in the manner we envisage in pain therapy, the next few years will certainly see it being established as a standard treatment for specific therapeutic units. It could also be used in places where a high degree of concentration is required, for instance in schools or fire service control centres.

TIME TO SWITCH? MHA Lighting MD, Tom Harrison guides healthcare managers through the latest LED lighting options and offers advice on navigating the LED lighting minefield

ow many healthcare managers know that lighting is the second biggest consumer of energy in any building? In a world concerned about energy efficiency, we are all under increasing pressure to choose products, which are both energy efficient and cost effective. But with so much technology on the market, how do you decide what is the right solution for the business? The Carbon Trust reports that energy efficient lighting can save UK businesses £700m a year, and cut more than 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Other research puts the savings closer to £1.4 billion. There is no doubt that the switch to energy efficient lighting can really pay off. But when, as healthcare managers do you jump on the LED bandwagon when the lighting market is moving so fast? And when you do eventually make the switch, how do you avoid the pitfalls that have unfortunately been associated with the LED lighting market? The benefits of LEDs are now well documented: •E fficiency: energy savings of up to 80 per cent with intelligent controls •L ifetime: useful lifetime of 60,000 hours – 14 years at 12 hours use per day •Z ero maintenance: reducing routine maintenance costs and disruption •C ool light: radiate very little heat •S hock resistance: robust design making it difficult to damage •T oxicity: contains no mercury, eliminating disposal costs (RoHS compliant) But then, so are the challenges: professional LED manufacturers have been working hard to ensure their products are able to achieve the photometric performance of fluorescents and halogens, and to develop luminaires that are as pleasant to look at as fluorescent. They have also been working hard to publicise how far the industry has come, and put distance between themselves and the ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ overseas manufacturers, who seem to care little for the quality or longevity of their fittings. LED lighting solutions have now been developed that have long-term reliability built in to their design, to overcome previous issues of lifetime.

But for all healthcare managers, the first consideration before choosing new lighting has to be the required quality of the lighting solution to be implemented - key considerations being light levels, colour rendering, uniformity and of course, what effect it will have on the patients. For example, the traditional high-pressure sodium or halides can no longer compete in any of the above lighting requirements against LED solutions, which provide 65 CRI and 5500Kelvin. The same rules would apply to internal applications too, as there is no need to compromise on light quality to take advantage of energy efficient lighting. The next consideration would typically be whether to go the whole hog to LED or the smaller - perceived safer - switch to T5 technology, which involves a much lower investment - but delivers a fraction of the energy saving. A key factor in choosing between the two will be the operating hours involved in the application. LEDs involve a greater upfront expenditure, and while offering much more significant savings, this only translates into the better business case if the lights are burning for at least 11 hours a day, such that return on investment can be achieved in a justifiable timeframe. If selecting LED technology, care also needs to be taken to ensure high reliability products are installed. The LED lighting industry is young and immature and there are horror stories aplenty regarding quality failures. For my own part, I have been shocked to be shown LED light fittings in hospital wards that were powered by laptop power supplies – and made a mental note to return to the premises in six months to offer a replacement! In fact all the benefits of LED technology are completely dependent on longevity in the fitting. And longevity in a LED light engine is completely dependent on three crucial factors: • The LED itself • Thermal management of the junction temperature • The driver Healthcare managers are entitled to ask the LED manufacturer or supplier to provide thorough documented evidence and certification for each of those three elements. Responsible suppliers will have independent test data for each of those factors as well as photometric data, CE marking and IP rating certification. For example after exhaustive evaluation, MHA selected a Philips Lumiled LED, which has 187 pages of independent test data to prove

that the LED will provide 60,000 hours of useful lifetime at 130 degrees. The junction temperature is typically 55 degrees – which is less than half of Philips’ maximum tolerance. LEDs can also be highly directional, which is why the majority of LED fittings tend to be downlights, spotlights or very high bay. But today there are certain LED lights, which will replace standard traditional lamps and provide equivalent uniformity. Healthcare managers need to ask for the photometric data as evidence of the light distribution of any fitting that they may be considering. Care should also be taken to ensure that for internal applications, LEDs with 80 CRI - or external application, 65CRI – should be specified. Some LED manufacturers provide much cooler temperatures as these give the appearance of the light being brighter than it actually is. In our experience, cooler temperatures of around 4000Kelvin are best suited to most internal applications, which may involve precision working, and external temperatures of 5500 kelvin and a 65CRI will deliver the ideal light colour. With respect to colour creation, LED lights can be inconsistent with a tolerance range of up to 500Kelvin so healthcare managers should take care to specify a tolerance of + /- 100Kelvin - and insist that the manufacturer demonstrates how this will be achieved! Finally, the manufacturer should be questioned as to how the internal LEDs are protected, so that surges in power supply will not result in catastrophic failure of the light engine. Personally, as a manufacturer of lighting products that use LEDs as the light source, I hope healthcare managers are not deterred from making the switch to LED. The ever-growing number of professional LED lighting manufacturers and suppliers are constantly innovating to create ever-improving solutions. The technology really is here right now, and over the next couple of years the take up will be no less than phenomenal. MHA continues to work with the early adaptors: to date it has been delighted with energy savings of between 70-80 per cent, and equivalent Co2 reductions. It has been further impressed by light quality and other associated benefits of LED lighting, ranging from zero maintenance to the cleanliness of the fittings. The company has completed numerous refurbishments for the NHS and the private healthcare sector, recently completing installations at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, which is part of the North Devon Healthcare Trust (NDHT), Macclesfield General Hospital and Lancaster Royal Infirmary. The high colour rendering of 4000Kelvin is precisely the colour the NHS requires to achieve the perfect light quality for examining patients. In rooms for medical attention and in areas where colour inspection takes place, a colour of at least 4000K (neutral) is specified, as it depicts skin pallor at its true colour. MHA has developed a bespoke dimming solution for the NHS to allow lights to be dimmed down to five per cent. This is fundamental for allowing the Trust to create a pleasant, healing environment where patients and staff are in control of ward lighting levels.

Ex-Or adds fully automated Emergency Lighting test to its best-in-class MLS Lighting Control System. Simplifies installation, reduces costs Ex-Or has announced even greater functionality of its popular MLS Digital Lighting System with the addition of a fully automated Emergency Lighting system test. This functionality – available as an option for new installations of Ex-Or’s flagship managed lighting control system, and also as a system upgrade - enables end users to conduct comprehensive testing of emergency luminaires and signs without having to install a separate, dedicated system. Emergency lighting and signage systems require rigorous periodic testing to ensure that they continue to enable the safe movement of people in the event of the failure of normal lighting. Regulations mandate that emergency lighting systems are tested to a specific schedule. Automated testing systems offer peace of mind with pre-programmed regular testing and the provision of full reporting which less reliable methods such as a manual inspection may not. Ex-Or’s latest innovation automates the emergency lighting test process, ensuring compliance with regulations. Moreover, by integrating the functionality into the company’s existing MLS Digital Lighting System, Ex-Or has eliminated the additional wiring required by standalone emergency lighting test systems. This is a huge benefit for customers, significantly speeding up installation and reducing cost. The MLS Emergency Lighting Test system is ideal for sites such as commercial offices, schools, universities, hospitals, warehouses and factories. Managed via a central controller and designed to operate with industry standard DALI emergency luminaires and signs, it offers comprehensive monitoring and reporting. The system constantly monitors status and executes pre-programmed scheduled tests, swiftly identifying potential

system faults and providing a clear and concise log of events for audit purposes. The system is designed to allow operators to schedule and perform emergency lighting test routines at times that cause the least disruption, such as in the early hours of the morning. Equipped with a browserbased user interface, it allows authorised users to securely log-in from both on and off-site locations, eliminating the need for a dedicated PC with specialist software installed. In addition to providing energy saving lighting control and comprehensive emergency lighting test functions, the Ex-Or MLS Lighting Control System enables integration with Building Management Systems (BMS) using the widely accepted BACnet standard. This allows sharing of occupancy information with other BMS systems and facilitates the execution of commands from the BMS such as time scheduled light level changes and intelligent load shedding.

highlight AN OLIVIER, DAHLINK!

FESTIVAL SEASON Central Presentations Ltd (CPL) has supplied lighting, design and programming services for the ARC Festival, an innovative one-day event celebrating electronic music and digital arts at Eastville Park, Bristol. Festival director, Ben Thompson and Will Young from Luma asked CPL’s Nick Diacre to co-ordinate the supply of AV and lighting equipment to various VJs and visual collectives working on site. Lighting in the main tent was designed by Will Howie, using a combination of CPL’s Martin MAC Aura LED washes, MAC 700 Spots, Atomic strobes and Molefeys, controlled via an Avolites Pearl desk, operated on-the-fly to complement and contrast with the assorted visuals appearing onscreen and the general vibe of the live sets as they developed. CPL also supplied assorted AV and lighting kit to various other areas, including the Polygon stage, which was designed and curated by Skulpt. This included Panasonic 10K projectors, PixelLine LED battens and a Slick trussing ground support system. A Barco FLM HD 20K projector was utilised for exterior projections on to the Tangent Dome, which took on a new life after dark, complete with live content generated by visual artist, Lumen. Just metres away, the Axis dome was illuminated by 12x MAC 350 moving lights, all synchronised by a motion tracking system... ‘Being a new festival it was very exciting to work on this project,’ enthused Diacre. ‘The challenge was that there were obviously a few unknowns that were not apparent until we were actually there on site.’

Passion in design HSL supplied lighting designer, Neil Carson with full lighting production for Emeli Sandé’s UK tour, together with a specials package for the European section. Carson was instrumental in getting the company on board, where the account was project managed by Mike Oates. Carson explained: ‘I wanted a lighting supplier that I knew could deliver the best quality kit, crew and attitude – HSL was my first choice.’ The design was based on three trusses and Robe moving lights; a combination of ROBIN 600E Spots and Washes – 35 in total, which were spread across the trusses, together with seven of Robe’s ColorWash 750E AT Tungstens. Using these fixtures enabled Carson to use smaller trussing. Carson’s initial brief was that the lighting should help make the show more personal, intimate and focused on the artist. The ColorWash 750E AT Tungstens were rigged on the front truss and used to key light Sandé and the six-piece band. Carson positioned eight Martin MAC Viper profiles along the back of the stage, plus six GLP Impression LED washes, for side lighting and adding low level cross-stage general colouring. There were also eight single floor PARs dotted around to augment the side lighting, all run in open white adding a flourish of tungsten warmth. Right upstage were three Nova Flower effects – used for specific accents and punctuation. A total of 21 vertically orientated Showtec active Sunstrips were strategically placed across the three trusses, adding architecture and form to the stage look and utilised for lifts and punches for selected choruses. Boosting the ambience were 30 individual over-sized light bulbs, each attached to a different length run of TRS hanging randomly from two of the trusses via out-rigged drop-bars. HSL also supplied two Robert Juliat Ivanhoe follow spots. Carson concluded: ‘HSL did a fantastic job. The company is large enough to have all the kit you might want, and personal enough to have real integrity and care. Mike’s passion for the job and the industry is truly amazing!’

The Olivier Awards is a glittering celebration of the very best of British theatre, recognising actors and productions alike for stunning performances across a range of genres. For the third consecutive year, XL Video sponsored the Award for Best Set Design (which went to Bunny Christie and Finn Ross for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime) as well as supplying video equipment for the ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House. XL supplied the centre-stage LED screen, built from Pixled FX-11, 12 tiles wide by seven tiles high, which linked up with the ITV broadcast feed and displayed live camera relay, VT clips and nomination packages. The main screen was matched on either side by two dynamic portraitorientated screens, which showed nominee logos, special guest awards and Olivier logos. Content for the side LED screens was fed by XL’s Catalyst media servers, programmed and operated by Dan Bond with the main screen fully operated by the ITV Broadcast team. XL Video also supplied scenic LED for the band risers in the form of Barco MiStrips. These were controlled via an additional dedicated main and backup lighting Catalyst unit, triggered from a grandMA2 console supplied by White Light. XL’s LED at the Opera House was project managed by Ed Cooper and his team. Cooper said: ‘To be a part of the Laurence Olivier Awards is a great honour. It is fantastic to see colleagues in the industry and projects we have worked on receiving recognition. It is always tricky managing the two sites whilst fitting in around the busy Royal Opera House repertory schedule, but with a hard working crew and great team work, the ceremony was a huge success.’

Pretty in pictures The Projection Studio has designed a permanent 270-degree installation featuring an adaptation of the highly successful ‘Illuminata’ at Caerphilly Castle for CADW, the official guardian of the built heritage of Wales. The show was originally projected onto two buildings in the Castle’s main courtyard for events in 2010 and 2011. This proved so popular that CADW wanted to integrate it as a lasting tribute to the colourful history of the castle to be enjoyed by the public all year round. Ashton commented: ‘I was very honoured to be asked to revise the show to run as a permanent work. It’s fantastic to see it have another lease of life and the chance to connect with so many more people in this re-worked format, which really retains all the drama and essence of the original.’

Lighting the detectives

Stage lighting for Elvis Costello’s latest tour is a delight to the eye

Liverpool-based

technical solutions and rental specialist, Adlib is supplying lighting, sound, rigging equipment and crew for the current Elvis Costello and The Imposters’ Revolver UK and European tour. It’s the first time that the company has worked with the highly acclaimed musician and songwriter, who’s hugely successful, dynamic and colourful career has seen numerous awards and accolades: he has been hailed as a great innovator as well and an incisive social commentator. Adlib’s Phil Stoker commented: ‘Working with someone of Elvis’s stature is fantastic.’ Adlib was able to offer a great package, combining both lighting and sound with all the advantages that having a single source supplier brings to a production. Neil Holloway

created the lighting design using a careful blend of classic and contemporary. The band chose the backdrop, which they have used previously – a faded old-fashioned TV set, which is joined by a series of quirky circus-style props onstage, the most prominent of which is the song wheel. Holloway wanted to lose some of the PAR 64s from the previous rig and make it a bit more tour-friendly and less power hungry, so he replaced all those that were on the front truss with 10 x ETC Source Fours (a mix of 19 and 25-50 degree lenses) and 4 x Martin MAC Aura LED washes. The back truss – trimmed just at the top of the backdrop, is made up of five sections of pre-rig, loaded with seven bars of PARs plus four MAC 700 Spots for some rear key light and solo pick-ups and general contrast in light. On the floor are another eight MAC Auras, which are a personal favourite of Holloway. For eye candy, as well as adding to the general idiosyncrasy of the stage, are four JB Lighting A8 LED fixtures and two A12s, which highlight the band from behind. Basic pixel mapping is used on these – they are zoned into eight sections to produce whizzy effects. Sweeping up the backdrop bringing some rich psychedelic colour to the area are 12 Philips CK ColorBlaze LED battens. Also feeding into Holloway’s grandMA2 light console, are the LEDs around the perimeter of the wheel. It’s the first time he’s used the MA2 light as a busking console, which, he says, is working ‘very well’. It’s not a massive amount of fixtures for the show, which is challenging due to the unplanned operation, which Holloway is really enjoying. ‘Simple and flexible,’ was the key, he commented, adding that it’s all about looks and textures that he can build from the lighting, as there is no haze allowed so the lights themselves are almost imperceptible until they hit the stage and the band. At the Royal Albert Hall venue, the team utilised the house front truss, advanced bars and Clay Paky Halo Wash 1200s together with 10 Source Four Revolution moving lights.

together on a number of projects, including the very popular Enchanted Parks annual public art event in Gateshead. This comprises a number of commissioned temporary public art works for which Ashton and Monid produced signature pieces involving projections and immersive soundscapes encompassing local elements and themes. PRETTY AS A PICTURE

Celebrated projection artist, Ross Ashton has been using the ready-made architectural canvas’ of a small Lincolnshire town to create his latest masterpiece – with a little help from his friends

E

nchanted Town is a creative concept uniting ideas, local culture and history, music, street theatre, live performance, digital art and cutting edge technology in a fun, open and accessible presentation … aimed at engaging the public in a vibrant and fun environment. The pilot event, staged at Horncastle in Lincolnshire, proved a huge success, attracting 4,000 visitors to the town centre for the evening, providing a welcome boost for local businesses. Enchanted Town is the brainchild of an innovative collaboration between outdoor arts producer and festival director, Robin Morley from Magnetic Events, large format projection and digital artist, Ross Ashton, and sound artist and audio designer, Karen Monid. The event formed the opening of the SO Festival, ten days of shows, events and culture taking place across the area, funded by East Lindsey District Council, Arts Council England and Centrica Energy. Morley, Ashton and Monid have previously worked

The idea behind Enchanted Town is that it can be transposed to any location. With the aid of visual magic, interactive street theatre and any number of other activities – including contributions from local artists - it will pull both visitors and business into an urban setting, enriching the location by allowing all to enjoy the surroundings and be entertained in imaginative, new and different ways. The centrepiece of the Horncastle event was two large format video projections created specially by Ashton, complete with bespoke soundtracks from Monid, which took their starting points from some well-known local personalities – poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and botanist, Sir Joseph Banks. The first ‘Spiritus – Ring Out Wild Bells’ was projected onto the bell tower of St Mary’s Church. Stunning 14m high, 8m wide images were beamed from a doubled-up pair of Barco CLM HD8 projectors, rigged in portrait format and installed in a specially constructed tower. When creating the images, Ashton took the splendid wooden angels holding up the church roof as his visual starting point, and created an animated story around them, which played on an eightminute loop. Tennyson’s The Wild Bells was first published in 1850, the year he was appointed Poet Laureate. Monid’s compelling and beautiful soundtrack used quotations and passages from the poem together with other elements. The second projected work, The Magical Spying Glass utilised the Banks Building as its canvas. The building is named after naturalist and botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, who was born in Lincolnshire and accompanied Captain James Cook’s first great voyage to the Southern Seas (1768-1771). Ashton’s eye-catching content unfolded a fantasy tale inspired by that voyage, with Banks starting off as the Great South Sea Caterpillar. It also incorporated legendary sea monster, the Kraken (the subject of an irregular sonnet by Tennyson). Artwork was based on some of Banks’ botanical drawings from the Cook voyage together with various cartoons and caricatures of him by 18th century satirist, James Gillray. A single Panasonic EX12 projector was located in local business, Travis Perkins’ showroom, about 25 metres way, which proved to be the optimum position to project the 13m wide image. Monid again composed an intricate and fun soundtrack, which added to the drama and sense of spectacle, enthralling onlookers. The projection and sound equipment for both installations was supplied by locally based, Enigma Effects. Portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism at East Lindsey District Council, Cllr Adam Grist, commented: ‘To see so many people in the town centre enjoying the acts and illuminations and supporting local businesses was wonderful’. Robin Morley said: ‘The response exceeded our expectations in terms of visitor numbers for the first Enchanted Town event. It was a real pleasure to work with Ross and Karen again, who are absolutely at the top of their game, and having international artists of their calibre involved certainly boosted the success of the whole project and in creating a truly magical event.’ Ashton agreed, saying: ‘We really enjoyed working in Horncastle – the setting is fabulous and it proves that you can hold events like this in the UK - at any time of the year - and people will come out and enjoy.’

They feature CrystalCool TM technology which radiates heat away from the LED. Through unique, far infrared thermal management, this 6W lamp delivers 400 lumens and 68lm/W for cost effective, high performance. Firetec lamps operate 30% cooler by reducing internal can temperatures by 20% for higher quality, brighter light for longer. The AU-DGU106/30 has smooth and linear dimming, a high colour rendering index (Ra) of 80 and lamp life of 50,000 hours to 70% lumen maintenance. This Firetec lamp is guaranteed to 4 years (when lamp sold individually) or 5 years (when used in Aurora’s Universal TM fire-rated downlights). The Firetec AU-DGU106/30 retrofit lamp is just one of Aurora’s full range of lighting solutions that have been consolidated into a single print source ‘GREEN’ which includes QR codes. ‘GREEN’ allows browsing around classes of lumen output, purpose and performance.

Ex-Or delivers 70% warehouse energy savings Ex-Or’s market-leading range of energy saving lighting solutions has been extended with the launch of Mid-Bay LightSpot PIRs, meaning there is now a full range of programmable PIR presence detection systems suitable for ceiling heights ranging from 8m up to 16m, typically found in warehouses and industrial units. Like the longestablished Hi-Bay LightSpot which is optimised for heights of 12m to 16m, the new Mid-Bay LightSpot offers 360 degree movement detection, but optimised for lower heights of 8 m to 12 m. This ensures that effective presence detection with maximum energy savings can be achieved. Both Hi-Bay and Mid-Bay LightSpot allow positioning at the end of the aisle, further extending LightSpot’s energy saving capability. This is made easy with the addition of a special sensor lens mask offering more efficient detection. Energy cost savings of up to 70 per cent or more can be made in industrial and commercial warehousing and storage buildings with high ceilings. This is thanks to LightSpot’s ability to ensure the lights are never left burning needlessly in areas that have been vacated or where there is enough natural light. Both MidBay and Hi-Bay LightSpot are simple to commission after installation - and can be easily reconfigured in the future in response to the regularly changing operational spaces within a dynamic warehousing environment. Commissioning Ex-Or lighting controls has been made even easier with the recent introduction of the Ex-Or HP18 LightSpot handheld controller. This low cost, pocket sized remote control is simple and intuitive to use for both installers and end users. The new Mid-Bay LightSpot is available with flush or surface mountings and is compatible with DALI or DSI ballasts.
