t seems that the blanket street lighting switch off has been reversed – at least in one area of the UK. Colchester Council has voted to re-instate all-night street lighting, after converting almost 1,700 of its 12-hour streetlights to LED this year. The

surprise volte-face came when Coucillors decided to set aside £185,000 to return to an illuminated town, in the face of rising crime and safety concerns. More than 3,000 petitions from residents complaining about the switch off had been received since the lights went out in 2013. The interesting part of this story for me, is the report of rising crime as

Flower power

a consequence of the switch off. I distinctly remember being assured that crime actually fell everywhere the lights were switched off – but from what Colchester has experienced, that’s not the case.

Lima’s latest light art installation comes into bloom

I wonder how many other towns and cities around the country are suffering similarly? I also wonder why our local councils don’t just bite the bullet and replace their street lighting with LED sources, enabling them to light our roads

nother of my favourite discussions reared its head this week. We’d headed off for a couple of days golf at a spa hotel on the Cote d’Azur. Daydreaming

tripping up and down unseen steps; Michele Roux-style mutterings of of ‘Ou là là!’ and worse, as an unlucky chap sent an expensive-looking sculpture crashing floor-wards; and a kid who managed to make himself extremely unwell by eating an un-noticed nut in his breakfast roll. And the reason for this universal clumsiness? The lighting, of course – and I can’t even add, ‘or the lack of’, as there were more fittings than I’ve ever seen in one place. They

And I can’t begin to think what long term damage was being caused to the staff’s eyesight… Coming within days of a report by Philips into the increased lumen requirements of workers as they age, it was an eye opener, in more ways than one.

sram has underlined its role as an innovation in the automotive sector, with the introduction of its technology in the BMW M4 concept car. The OLED sources enable the car lights to be made in any shape, opening up completely new design options. ‘The show car is an important milestone for our OLED strategy,’ said Marc Lünnemann, who is responsible for OLED business at the company. ‘As a leading supplier, Osram wants to have a presence on the road with a series OLED product from 2016 onwards.’ The new show car from BMW is equipped with state-of-theart Osram lighting, both at the front and the back of the vehicle. BMW’s familiar twin round headlights now appear in a new guise thanks to laser technology from Osram. But it is the rear lights that arouse most interest. These feature organic light emitting diodes, which generate light in wafer thin layers of organic material.

LED Engin has announced a global distribution agreement with Digi-Key, the industry leader in electronic component selection, availability, and delivery. The company’s LuxiGen emitters and secondary lenses are now available through Digi-Key’s global websites. President and CEO of LED Engin, David Tahmassebi, commented: ‘Through this agreement, hundreds of thousands of design engineers and purchasers around the world now have access to LED Engin products. ‘Digi-Key is a customer-focused company that ranks highly in industry surveys for its product availability, rapid order fulfillment, and responsive service. This means faster access to our class-leading emitters and optics.’

As part of its on-going expansion, GlassGuard has appointed distributor, RS Components to extend its operation into Italy. Based in Milan, RS Components will interact with specifiers and end-users to ensure GlassGuard products are identified in applications where lamps need to be protected. Commercial director, Mark Goodwin said: ‘We have been supplying to food manufacturing and packaging sites across Europe for 20 years, and

have been working in partnership with BRC Global Standards since 2010 to promote industry compliant fragment retention lamps. ‘It is particularly important therefore, that food producers in Italy, who are looking to export to the UK, are fully aware of their food safety obligations. Particular attention to making adequate protection of their lighting in order to minimise the risk of glass contamination, will pave the way for positive professional compliance.’

The LIA has received a share of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, to further develop its laboratory services and Lighting Training Academy. The funds will help create a testing laboratory to cope with increased demand, which will house an R&D centre. The LIA also plans to build an academy to provide education, and awareness services for the lighting supply chain. Being sited at the Association’s Telford headquarters means that the courses will have a distinctly ‘hands-on’ feel, to help drive the introduction of new lighting technology and low energy initiatives. ‘These new facilities will be a fantastic asset for the industry,’ said Steve Davies, CEO. ‘It will shorten lead times for the introduction of new products, especially for the UK SME market, as well as raising awareness of the potential of such products – consequently jobs will be secured and created both within the Lighting Industry Association itself but also across the Lighting Industry as a whole.’ The Academy will be a unique proposition for the industry. Whilst the LIA will continue to deliver and develop its well-respected technical content for the lighting industry, the scope will increase to include the retail and wholesale aspects of the market. It is envisaged that specifiers and designers will also benefit as courses are developed during the next 12 months.

Havells Sylvania has become a Gold Associate sponsor of the International Year of Light 2015. Christian Schraft, president of Havells Sylvania Europe, said: ‘We are extremely proud to be sponsoring the International Year of Light. It is a unique opportunity to grow awareness of cuttingedge lighting solutions. This is a tremendous opportunity for us, not only to raise global awareness of our brand and its capabilities, but also to work with other stakeholders to show the world how light-based technologies can support sustainable development and offer solutions to global challenges in terms of energy, education, agriculture and health, for example.’ As part of IYL 2105, Havells Sylvania is helping to explore and celebrate the importance of light and optical technologies by sponsoring an exhibition experience at Eléphant Paname Art and Dance Centre in Paris, France (6 March – 31 May 2015). Lumières – Play of Brilliants is an exhibition by a collection of artists working with light. The highly sensory and emotional exhibition pushes the boundaries between art, design, architecture, science, technology and industry. The exhibition has been organised by Eléphant Paname, managed by cutting-edge lighting design studio, Temeloy, and curated by Light Collective – with Concord as the official lighting partner.

LED technology could help retailers improve sales, after San Francisco’s Green Apple Books installed LED lighting that uses Bluetooth and location information to send promotional messages to shoppers while they are in store. Sensors inside the fittings transmit Bluetooth signals, which are picked up by shoppers’ smartphones. The technology, which tracks the customer’s movements and then sends helpful information depending on where they are in the store, looks set to pave the way for a new era of in-store advertising, and appears to be the new frontier in lighting solutions. Steven Ellwood, MD of BLT Direct believes: ‘The developments in lighting technology nowadays are quite staggering. Consumers can now buy bulbs, which can play music, connect to Wi-Fi networks, and even send promotional messages directly to mobile devices. ‘The latest advancements will be very exciting for businesses, who will now be able to target customers as they wander around a retail outlet.’

hat do caffeine, noise and lighting all have in common? Each one has a significant impact on how focused and productive we are in the office. However, while the vast majority of companies take steps to ensure workers are not distracted by a noisy environment; lighting is one part of the office environment that is frequently overlooked. First, the science bit. Data shows harsh or dim lighting, or workspaces solely lit by artificial means can stunt productivity levels in the workplace. A study by the American Psychological Association found poor lighting conditions can lead to worker cortisol levels significantly dropping, leading to higher levels of stress and feelings of being sleepy1. Furthermore, a study from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, showed participants with access to daylight were significantly more alert after a full day than those who were exposed to artificial light over the same period2. Although many companies look to comply with regulations and align themselves with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) LG series of lighting design guides, seen as a benchmark in the UK, others are shooting themselves in the foot – and potentially losing valuable hours every day – if they fail to optimise light levels for their staff. The solution lies in leveraging modern technology and lighting design to create the best possible learning environment.

DAY L I G H T H A RV E S T I N G In an ideal world we would be able to get all work done during daylight hours, with ample natural light coming in through the window. Of course, there are a thousand reasons why this is a challenge; building layout, shift workers and, short winter days to name a few. Daylight harvesting is a solution that is used to offset the amount of artificial lighting needed to properly light a space. By investing in lighting controls,

which often involve the use of sensors, companies can dim or switch off artificial lighting automatically in response to daylight availability. This allows companies to ensure their employees aren’t exposed to high levels of artificial lighting throughout the day with the added bonus of reducing energy consumption. Daylight harvesting systems need to be correctly designed for best results versus user comfort and ensuring the correct minimum illumination levels are met. Currently the best way to address this is to base daylight harvesting design and outcomes on Climate Based Daylight Modelling (CBDM) and Daylight Indexing (DI).

LIGHTING CO N T R O L S Lighting controls with features such as lens tilting, allow for installation and commissioning flexibility as the detection zone can be adjusted to accommodate location and pre-existing structures, such as HVAC vents or pipes. Additionally, high definition lenses with micro and macro detection capabilities guarantee lighting is always on when required and more importantly, off when not. The sensors employed

C O N TA C T For more information please visit: www.ex-or.com Ex-Or enquiries: E: enquiries.ex-or@honeywell.com T: 01942 719229

are sensitive enough to detect very small movements such as typing, thus allowing facility managers to set shorter time delays, further maximising energy savings. Additionally, performance optics and corresponding software, which can help companies to adjust and tune lighting levels throughout a space or duplicate it throughout a building, help to quell worker unproductiveness by providing the dual benefits of a comfortable and well lit environment as well as energy efficiency and cost savings. Moreover, it’s important that no work lighting environment is completely automated. These solutions allow employees to further adjust lighting conditions to meet their need, for example if there is a presentation and lighting needs to be dimmed so participants can see the screen.

LO O K I N G A H E A D As a next step companies need to look to schools as an example of how they can help address and standardise lighting, ensuring the right lighting levels are implemented to ensure optimal worker productivity. The ATL, the union for education professionals across the United Kingdom, stipulates that any room used for teaching must be lit by natural and/or artificial light with 300 lux or more at any point on the work surface, usually appropriate in classrooms, libraries and halls. Additionally, the ATL also notes that Illumination must not be less than 500 lux where visually demanding tasks are carried out, for example, in laboratories.

2700 luminaire lumens (LL) after losses / (led chips running at 28 Watts + driver at 4 Watts) = 84.375LL/CW WITHOUT DRIVER

2700 / 28W = 96.42LL/W This is a huge difference. Even though four watts doesn’t sound much in monetary terms, it can add up to quite a bit. But we can see by not including the driver, it makes the product seem more efficient, as the efficacy is a lot higher. The following calculation will show the additional running cost of the driver: ADDITIONAL RUNNING COST OF THE DRIVER

s it true that we still don’t understand how to pass on true data to our clients? What has it come to, when the UK has luminaire manufacturers who cannot do simple maths, or just have no logic behind the data they produce? As an industry, we should be ashamed of ourselves. Our clients deserve better, do they not? They want to be educated, and they need to be able to make an informed decision. It’s not their fault that we are pushing the boundaries of LED lighting. Therefore we need to be able to give accurate answers to simple questions, such as efficacy. Let’s embrace the calculator, and use its LED-backlit screen to work the algebra that we fundamentally base our designs and proposals on. Let’s start with Building Regulation Part L - my personal favourite… The rule is 60 luminaire lumens per circuit watt, without any control to the fitting. This is not hard to achieve, as many LED products are around the 80 LL/cW. “What is this?” I hear you shout. Well, let me explain absolute photometry/system wattage.

insignificant amount, depending on the company who pays the bill). The living wage in the UK is set at £7.85 per hour. So getting the efficacy wrong could equal a potential overspend for a company of one person’s wage for 7.25 weeks. Could that mean companies are not employing people because the lighting industry can’t add up? I don’t really think so, but think of the end-of-year budgets that the accountant has to work to. Our industry can’t be helping them if this kind of practice is going on. The payback calculators that are used need absolute data to make them work correctly. In the past, with traditional light sources, we used calculations based on the luminous flux of a lamp, multiplied by the light output ratio, and divided by total operating wattage of the lamp plus ballast. This is not relevant for LED luminaires. So why do we need to standardise our data? It is just common sense isn’t it? If we are clear about the calculations we use, then we stand a much better chance of engaging with our clients or prospective clients. We have all seen payback models based around luminaires where they haven’t calculated the driver losses. Anybody can engineer a payback model around inaccurate data, to fool the clients into buying a lighting scheme. But you stand to lose your credibility once the energy bill comes in. Yes, they have saved money, but if the payback calculation is miles out, then the promises made become a FARCE. SO PLEASE REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING:

Total luminous flux after optical losses (including optic and diffuser), divided by the operating wattage of the live system at full output.

Old or new, school buildings can all benefit from LED adoption

E

ducational buildings in the UK vary from dusty 18th Century libraries to ultra modern, high tech blocks built specifically to house classrooms, science labs, gyms, and all the other varied requirements of our education system. Most children are educated in buildings somewhere in between the two, so can there be a one-size-fits-all LED approach to lighting our seats of learning?

When it comes to new builds, there can be little doubt that an LED solution is the way ahead. Standard and bespoke LED luminaires have been installed in five new primary schools as part of an extensive replenishment programme of South Lanarkshire Council’s (SLC) education estate. One of the wider benefits has been that, in new buildings, the Council has been able to improve the estate’s energy efficiency, life-cycle costs, and environmental impact. In many cases this has involved taking advantage of the latest developments in LED lighting. At the five primary schools St Marks, St Leonard’s, South Park, Kirkton, and Bankhead - Lend Lease worked with mechanical and electrical designer, TÜV SÜD Wallace Whittle, and Philips Lighting to produce designs that would meet all of the Council’s criteria. Lend Lease project manager, Barry O’Hagan recalled: ‘The Council had indicated that they would like to use LED lighting to take advantage of the energy efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs. ‘In comparing the proposed LED lighting design with a more traditional fluorescent lighting design, the team was able to show that installed electrical load would be reduced from 10W/m2 to just 5W/m2. This will result in a reduction in CO2 emissions from 8.6 kg/m2 to 5.6 kg/m2.’ Ten different LED fixtures were used to ensure that the precise lighting requirements of each space were met. These included a bespoke version of the Arano wall light, developed in conjunction with TÜV SÜD Wallace Whittle, which combines 8,000 lumens up-lighting with 2,000 lumens down-lighting to fulfill design requirements. Maxos LED panel luminaires were specially adapted to enable them to be used as whiteboard lights in classrooms. The list of Philips’ LED luminaires included CoreView Panels in classrooms, GentleSpace in the sports hall, LuxSpace in corridors, Smartform in toilets, SmartBalance in the dining room, and IP65 Kitchen fittings in the kitchen. In addition, Pacific LED fittings were used in cupboards, storerooms and back-of-house, while stairways were lit using Gondola wall-mounted fittings.

Making space A former courtyard at Chorlton High School in Manchester (right) has been used to create a multi-purpose classroom, which utilises ModLED suspended luminaires from Dextra. The luminaires were secured in a continuous run, in order to tie in with the rest of the design, and were complimented with Gyro-Light fittings secured to the outer perimeter of the sloping ceiling. Pupils can now enjoy a more brightly lit space, while the school reaps the benefits offered by LED technology.

Ageing estates Not all schools have the opportunity to start afresh. The majority of educational buildings are getting on, but LED solutions are still very much a viable option in these circumstances, as Ashfield School in Nottinghamshire discovered. As one of the largest secondary schools in the country, Ashfield has an understandably large energy demand. This meant the heat was on to find ways to cut waste and try to reduce consumption. ‘The school is fifty years old, and the classrooms had old, inefficient lighting,’ explained Martin Hough, the school’s business manager. ‘Some of them still had 50 watt bulbs, making the lighting levels inadequate. This was an especially pressing issue because the school remains open in the evenings.’

Clean slate When it came to lighting the assembly hall and drama studio at new build, Lees Brook Community School in Chaddesden, Derby, School Stage specified an impressive lighting rig from Chauvet, including four Professional Q-Wash 419Z-LED moving heads, and four powerful 240W LED Professional Rogue R2 Spot units for authentic award ceremony presentations or school band concerts, proving LEDs are just as suitable for specialist installations as standard classrooms. School Stage company director, Chris Newton commented: ‘The Rogue R2 units are robust in design, and just the brightness I was looking for. The hall roof is very high, and the R2s have the power necessary to provide real punch.’ In the main auditorium, carefully hidden within each alcove left and right of the stage, are a further four Rogue R2 Spot units, four Q-Wash 419Z-LED moving yoke wash lights, with three individually controlled LED zones for great visual effects. Newton was impressed with how well the LED verses conventional light sources worked in this environment. School Stage programmed various pre-set lighting schemes to enable simple operation of the lights and presentation systems in the hall. 20 • A P R I L 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

Bespoke solution LED technology was identified as an efficient way to boost light levels while also cutting energy consumption. However, the particulars of the school meant that fitting new LED lighting was not altogether straightforward. The original building has old, flat roofs and, to prevent leaking, Burgess metal pan ceilings have been installed in many of the classrooms, modified to fit the existing grid. Light fittings for this application need to be customised, which would usually threaten the tight timescales of project management.

However, because Tamlite manufactures on-site in the UK, it could make the bespoke products very quickly. A sample was completed in ten working days, and within two weeks, the school had received the entire consignment, ensuring the lighting installation could be completed on schedule. In total, 197 customised Tamlite 600x600 Euromod LED panels were installed in classrooms, with 300 Euro LED slimline recessed down-lights fitted in the corridors, and controlled by ceiling-mounted occupancy sensors to automatically switch off the lighting

when the corridors are empty. The lighting quality is now much improved; the recessed fittings give off a comfortable, uniform light.

Looking forward Tamlite estimates that Ashfield School is saving 13.3 tonnes of CO2 every year, as a result of the classroom and corridor lighting upgrades. The occupancy sensors in the corridors are likely to extend these savings even further. If the lights are switched on only 60 per cent of the time, the school can expect to save a further 4 tonnes of CO2 each year. ‘It’s really important to us that Ashfield School is improving its energy efficiency and cutting its carbon footprint,’ continued Hough. ‘Achieving this in an older school building has proved challenging at times, but the bespoke fittings and LED lighting from Tamlite have helped the refurbishment project to run smoothly. We’re looking forward to continuing our green push. We’d like to put solar panels on our roof – and we intend to continue our light replacement programme.’ C O N T A C T

SPECIALIST

OPINION

The real cost David White of Arrow Electronics discusses innovation in thermal management for price-sensitive LED design

T

he LED lighting industry has made tremendous progress in recent times, and is now maturing steadily. The technology is moving beyond its disruptive phase, as performance credentials are proven in major target applications, and LED lighting is already seen as the world’s preferred lighting technology. The longer-term process of completely replacing incandescent, and many compact-fluorescent, lamps across the industrial, commercial, architectural, and domestic lighting markets is now in progress. These markets are often highly price sensitive. Lighting OEMs must continue to reduce the retail prices for LED lamps and luminaires, if they are to oust existing products from more and more applications. Keeping a closer eye on manufacturing costs is vital, in order to protect margins. A more calculated approach to thermal engineering can help improve cost control, in particular by addressing the cost of the thermal-interface material (TIM), and thermal adhesives used in each assembled lamp or luminaire. Historically, this cost has been difficult to quantify - and hence its effect on the selling price - difficult to predict, as the materials are typically sold in bulk, and processed at the point of assembly. Hence the price of TIM has been amortised over a large number of units. OEMs now need a more accurate view of the per-unit cost of TIM, if they are to maintain control of margins at the lower retail prices. Arrow Electronics has identified the need for a solution to this challenge, as a result of working with several LED lighting OEMs. These include brands already established in the lighting industry, as well as new startups dedicated to developing LED-based lighting solutions.

Popular LED form factors

Off-the-shelf thermal engineering

LED modules that combine multiple individual emitters to deliver a high overall light output, are currently becoming extremely popular among designers of LED lighting systems. Actually, this is the fastest growing sector of the high-power LED market today. The Cree LMH2 LED module is a typical example. These units deliver up to 8,000 lumens with outstanding efficacy of up to 108 lumens per Watt, and 90+ CRI in colour temperatures from 2,700K to 4,000K, making them a great choice for decorative lighting, spotlights, downlights, or high-bays. Integrated arrays, or COB (Chip On Board) LEDs are another fast-growing LED technology area. These deliver outstanding efficacy, using small-sized chips, and have a large lighting area that produces high lumen output with the uniform quality of a lighting panel. Arrow supports COB LEDs from manufacturers such as Cree, Osram, and Samsung. Among them the Cree XLamp CXA series can be driven at up to 2.5A for maximum power of up to 100W, producing light output of 10,000plus lumens. They are popular in a wide range of applications, ranging from GU10 replacements and commercial downlights to outdoor area and high-bay lighting. The large size of the array, combined with the mechanical mounting requirements for COB LEDs, places extra importance on the use of high-quality thermal materials. To help customers streamline thermal design and calculate costs more accurately, when working with high-power modules and COB LEDs, as well as highbrightness LEDs in PLCC-4, PLCC-6, and various other packages and footprints, Arrow started a project with two of its existing franchise partners in the thermal materials sector: Innotape and 3M.

Dedicated heatsinks and lenses for standard high-brightness LEDs are already well established in the marketplace. Feedback from customers has shown it was time for a similar approach to the supply of thermal materials. Working with Innotape and 3M, a line of product-specific TIMs was developed, starting with the most popular products. These include LEDs and modules from Avago Technologies, Cree, Everlight, Osram, Samsung, Sharp, and Vishay. The 3M portfolio of thermal materials and adhesives is already known and respected by leading producers of LED lighting, for applications from automotive and street lighting to industrial, architectural, and domestic lighting. The high performance and quality of these materials has already been proved extensively in computing, networking, telecoms, and mobile applications. Arrow had also been working for some time with German material-preparation specialist, Innotape, which has expertise with thermal materials, as well as materials for applications such as EMI shielding, surface insulation, protection, and sealing. Bringing 3M and Innotape together, and adding the lighting-specific experience gained from the field by Arrow’s application engineers, created the ideal team to develop the new range of product-specific TIMs. This teamwork has produced a comprehensive range of high-performance TIMs and thermally-conductive transfer tapes in standard sizes for specific LEDs. Using the TIMs, lighting OEMs can now calculate the cost of thermal management as accurately as the cost of any other component in the BOM. C O N TA C T

OPINION

Connected thinking Open Technology’s Chris Bedford asks whether we should be getting more excited about emergency lighting

L

et’s face it, emergency lighting is not exactly a subject that inspires. In fact, for many building managers, it’s a downright pain. They know it has to be done, but it’s time consuming, inefficient, and costly. It’s often not done well, and can result in fixtures being out for considerable periods of time before they are spotted. We can certainly improve this process but can we go further? Is emergency lighting something we could ever get excited about? I think the answer is yes. The trick is to start thinking vertically… It seems we are living in the age of the Internet of Things, and looking to a future that promises everyone and everything can be connected. But in the built environment, we are stuck in silos. Most people still think of emergency lighting and control lighting as separate systems. As long as we keep thinking that way, we are missing the opportunity to dramatically improve our emergency lighting procedures and unlock the benefits of intelligent control at the same time.

Going remote Part of the problem is that users are often not aware of the full range of financial, and operational benefits that the right system can offer. The best lighting control C O N TA C T

systems are able to undertake regular testing automatically. They can then store and distribute the results as required, even sending them directly to email in-boxes. Compare this to the usual process of sending a competent person to site, to test and record compliance. The manual approach is very costly and, in some cases, may not be undertaken at all. With automated testing built into a control system, lamp failures can be immediately

Automating emergency testing represents savings of tens of thousands of pounds’ forwarded to the maintenance team or helpdesk. Building managers also have the freedom to select their own testing regimes. So, first we need to be aware of what the right systems have to offer us. Second, we need to think differently about building the financial rationale of purchasing these systems. Automating emergency testing represents savings of tens of thousands of pounds. But this value is almost always overlooked when it comes to weighing up purchasing decisions.

Control pays Budget is always available for emergency testing because it’s an obligation; finding capital for control systems can be more challenging, because it’s still seen as ‘nice to have’. The key is to look at the full picture when calculating the savings that control will deliver. The energy savings achieved by installing a lighting control system are typically between 30 and 40 per cent. Where this is combined with an upgrade to highly efficient LED lighting, the total energy savings can easily be around 80 per cent. But there are also substantial maintenance savings that can be achieved, primarily through the automation of emergency testing. When all of these savings are brought into the picture, the commercial case is extremely compelling. With the commercial case in place, building managers can then unlock the wide range of functionality that intelligent lighting control can deliver, from presence detection to scene setting. Ultimately, lighting control is about creating environments that respond to the exact needs of the building users. But getting these projects off the ground might just start from the simple point of improving our emergency testing.

EasiLume gives Balfour Beatty’s warehouse a new lease of life In September Balfour Beatty completed the Fit-out of its 1800 square metre warehouse and attached office, in derby. EasiLume provided the LED lighting design and products for the project. EasiLume’s High Bay LED lighting was used for the bulk of the warehouse lighting, along with a series of LED strip lights. The strip lights were used to compliment the LED high bay lighting in the main warehouse, and provide full coverage in the lower ceiling areas. For the office EasiLume’s LED panels were used, a like-for-like replacement of the previous fixtures. The warehouse and office now look bright and modern. They’ve been given a new lease of life by the refurbishment. As EasiLume Sales Manager Stuart Dixon explains: “Before the refurb the warehouse was gloomy and dull. Making the relatively small change of upgrading to LED lighting has made a huge difference. “Not only does the lighting look great, it also saves money on energy and maintenance bills. EasiLume’s LED is more energy efficient than their halogen and fluorescent equivalents saving up to 60% on electricity bills throughout their 60,000 hour lifetime. This makes the investing in LED a great strategic choice.”

Picture perfect A winter installation with a difference in Paris

O

n the bank of the River Seine, between the bridges, Pont de la Concorde and Passerelle de Solférino, and close to Musée d’Orsay, lies a part of Paris that is always buzzing with pedestrians, known as Berges de Seine. In this urban centre, the Mairie de Paris (city hall) organised a special lighting installation, which ran from mid-December until the end of January. Lighting designers from LightLab were looking for a solution evoking a permanent vertical flow, to create an impression of city life. The team introduced rental company, Lumière et Son, which last year brought the Hermès flagship store at Champs Elysées to life during the festive season. The company’s suggestion to create a 3D graphic volume to inspire city movements was met with great

enthusiasm by the client. Lumière et Son prepared a full set up, consisting of pre-drilled wood risers to vertically mount 108 SGM LT-200, two-metre LED tubes, in a 12 x 9m matrix, hiding all cabling and Art-Net drivers underneath. The matrix was positioned on a ground mirror to extend the dimension and depth of the display. SGM’s French distributor, Sonoss worked closely with LightLab and Lumière et Son to create picture-perfect effects, reflecting exactly what the concept intended to inspire. Sonoss used Madrix to programme the show and achieve the goal of the designers. Passers by have been able to enjoy three different shows, prepared for daytime, nighttime, and a special for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

‘The LT-200 was definitely the best choice to meet these requirements with their high luminosity, bright and crispy colours, and the easy setup, thanks to a good preengineering,’ enthused Vincent Criulanscy, product and project manager at Sonoss. ‘3D lighting is also very attractive, as it is quite unusual to find in the townscape.’ Criulanscy noticed that many people stopped to record the show with photos and video, obviously taken by surprise by the intensity of the effects. ‘They sometimes stay outside in the cold to observe the full 15-minute show,’ he said. The science of car sales

D

uring the past month or so, I’ve spent more than my fair share of time in car showrooms, trying to look intelligent and take in all the benefits of the various models I’m comparing prior to purchase. However, after less than thirty minutes in one particular showroom, I found myself unable to concentrate, and with a really bad headache. I made my excuses, only to find that not only did the person I was with feel exactly the same, but according to the salesman, it had happened to a growing number of their customers, but they didn’t know why. Apparently, when the showroom was converted from its former use, nobody had taken into account the effect of all that gleaming paintwork, chrome, and glass on the relatively new, but wholly unsuitable lighting design, and it was literally blinding the staff and customers alike.

helping to improve energy efficiency for VW. The showroom requires 70 Linea Flat fittings to illuminate the vast space, however the simple design means that there’s no visual clutter on the ceiling, and the precise, white light from the wide beam spreads an even light across the vehicles, creating a clean and bright appearance throughout the showroom, so the customer’s attention remains focused on the cars. Additionally, the energy saving capabilities has allowed De Kimpe to achieve an estimated power saving of 4.8KW per hour, and helped to build on a new green image for the showroom and the company. ‘Linia Flat is perfect for this type of installation, the high output, high efficiency, and fast easy installation make it ideal for the spacious showroom environment,’ explained Mike Attard, MD of RIDI Lighting. ‘De Kimpe chose the wide beam mode, allowing for the even distribution of light across the whole vehicle display area. The pre-wired system also allows use of spot and track modules to be incorporated.’

Small, but perfectly lit Customers visiting Westerly MINI’s new showroom in Exeter are in for a treat since it underwent major refurbishment work to enhance the fun and exciting identity of the iconic brand. The revitalised showroom makes a clear statement with its slick, playful look, which includes an almost full-sized model of a yellow MINI mounted vertically across the front wall. The dealership has created a spectacular, image-conscious retail space, paying tribute to MINI’s British roots and sporting history. Dextra Lighting was approached by PCB Group’s Tom Potts to help transform the showroom, providing a lighting solution that would reinforce the company’s racy and playful image, and to provide specialist lighting for promotional events, such as the launch of new models. The brief required an increase of light intensity in the car display area, raising it from the previous 500 lux to an optimum 800 lux. The lighting bodies were to be transparent, or finished in black, to adhere to the desired colour scheme and style. Since the layout of the cars and other promotional features was to be subject to continuous change, adjustable directional lighting was essential to accommodate movement in the display area.

Displayed to sell The company’s Gyro-Light fulfilled every criteria for the interior display area. Available in a variety of head configurations (single, twin, triple and quadruple) in either LED or CDM-T with 3000K or 4000K colour temperatures, each recessed gimbal head is capable of pivoting and rotating independently, giving the client extra flexibility to adjust the lighting to moving displays. With its robust steel outer housing powder painted in black, and adjustable die cast luminaire heads, the sturdy fitting took centre stage in the extensive lighting upgrade, with a high number of luminaires in single, twin

46 • A P R I L 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

and quadruple configurations, and varying lumen outputs successfully highlighting the cars and projecting a bright, inviting light over the visitor seating areas. The combination of individually adjustable heads, and adaptable range of lumen outputs between 1400lm and 3000lm for LED variants, provided the client with a flexible, user-friendly and efficient lighting solution for its stylish retail environment.

Working comfort Westerly MINI wasn’t just looking for an attractively lit car display area, so much as a complete lighting refurbishment. As result, Dextra provided an all-inclusive lighting solution, including durable Amex LED installed under the canopy outside the showroom’s main entrance. The dealership’s offices were furnished with MODLED Office luminaires, which are designed specifically for areas where monitors are in constant use. Abiding to stringent BSEN 12464 glare requirements, the fitting’s micro-prism optic with high transmission opal diffuser ensures that the luminaire output meets the 3000 candela limit recommended for busy office environments. For the building’s toilet facilities, Protec LED downlights delivered in a 3000lm output option offer an efficient solution, with an array of adaptable features. To enhance building safety, the LED3 module served as additional support for the integral emergency packs installed with the showroom’s main lighting. For the dealership’s workshops and storage areas, the Herald T5 provided a cost effective T5 fluorescent option to suit the client’s budget management.

Mini’s big brother Often found sharing sites with MINI, two of BMW’s standalone showrooms have been upgraded by MDG Architects, specialist in high quality architectural car showroom designs. The company, which is responsible for maintaining the BMW brand standard, has extensively renovated the two UK outlets

to showcase BMW cars in an environment that is more efficient, sustainable, and affordable, in accordance with the company’s international guidelines. BMW’s electric and hybrid models utilise innovative technology, and efficiency in their design. In order to integrate these aspects into the showrooms, MDG worked with The Environmental Network (TEN), and SLD Lighting to specify high quality products from Toshiba Lighting. TEN and MDG developed a concept for optimal lighting with the most modern design. Halogen lamps were swapped out for E-CORE LED downlights, E-CORE LED panels, E-CORE PAR16 reflector lamps, and Neogrid. The decisive selection factor was the ability

The changeover to LED products pays off above all in terms of operating costs’

to uphold the high standards of the brand. In the new car presentation area, for instance, the company placed value on a lighting intensity of 800 lux, exceeding the European DIN standard for automobile inspection rooms. The chosen colour temperature of 4000 Kelvin (neutral white) allows the paint colours to appear as in daylight. For the sales floor and the offices, a lighting intensity of 400–500 lux was chosen, again in accordance with DIN standards. Combined with a colour temperature of 3000 Kelvin (warm white), the new lighting creates a pleasant atmosphere and ideal conditions for relaxed working.

Built to last Aside from design and adherence to standards, the highest priority was to reduce energy and maintenance costs and prolong the lives of the lights. ‘The changeover to LED products pays off above all in terms of operating costs, given their utmost efficiency, longevity, and lower maintenance costs,’ commented John Millar of The Environmental Network. ‘For the long term, dealers can reduce their energy and maintenance costs by more than 70 per cent, and at the same time take a clear stance in the name of environmental protection.’

LAKESIDE FOOD COURT

SOUL FOOD Creating atmospheric lighting for eateries, great and small

E

ating out is big business. Despite – or possibly because of - the double, or was it triple-dip recession, the shrinking pound in our pocket, a lack of job opportunities, and those ever-increasing bills, it’s a growing trend, a way to get away from the worries of everyday living. So it’s the smart restaurateur who thinks outside the box when it comes to creating an inviting ambience for their eatery. Whether they run a fast food mall outlet, a town centre coffee emporium, or a Michelin-starred restaurant offering world-class cuisine, the successful venues all have one thing in common: the owners have managed to create a special ambience for diners. We may be slavish followers of food fashion, but even the most die-hard gastro-nerd would baulk at the sight of a certain snail porridge dish (remember that one?), if served under glaring fluorescent strips. It’s all about the presentation, and that extends to the surroundings.

Be it ever so humble There’s no place like Lakeside – and anyone who’s spent a day shopping its retail offering will know how popular the re-styled third floor food court is. Early in the design process, owner, Intu recognised lighting would be a key element of the dynamic and vibrant atmosphere it wanted, and invited Lighting Design International (LDI) to work in collaboration with retail specialist, Rawls & Co to design the scheme. The brief uses light as a signal to draw customers up to the space, as well as contributing to the creation of a pleasant, yet dynamic environment with plenty of visual interest. The lighting scheme set out to create a more intimate atmosphere, by drawing the eye away from the previously up-lit glass roof structure. Under the glass roof there is an abundance of natural light, however under the deep soffits there is comparatively little. The challenge to LDI was to use lighting techniques to balance the consequences of architectural interventions, delivering a light and vibrant atmosphere by day, and a comfortable welcoming area during the evening and night. The solution centres on reducing visible light fittings by introducing bright, clean, linear LED, concealed in various specialist details. These provide even illumination levels, while creating visually interesting and bright soffits. This lighting base is punctuated with statement pendants, and limited numbers of focused down-lights that ensure illumination is not flat during the evening. Large bespoke pendants make use of colour and pattern to draw shoppers up the escalators. Once in the main space, visitors are immediately struck by the brightly lit, triangular stretch ceiling panel detail that runs around the perimeter of

RETAIL the food court. This detail is a major focal point, and acdc worked closely with LDI to provide the technology that would create the desired lit effect. Mock-ups were created to establish the best possible way of lighting the panels, and to ensure that all of the LEDs gave a consistent output and colour temperature across the installation. The lighting was designed to fade towards the centre of the panels, adding visual interest.

CAFÉ 1809

Added interest Lighting designer Graham Rollins explained: ‘We used LED due to the advantages of long life, and minimal maintenance in areas that are difficult to access in a busy environment with long trading hours. It was key to use product that could be fed in long, single runs, from a minimal number of remote drivers, improving the maintenance and installation time further, while allowing the LED to span the atrium in a single run.’ Acdc’s ORELLE was supplied in a special extrusion, to offer continuous and homogenous lines of light across the atrium beams. It was also selected as the light source for the undulating glassreinforced gypsum ceiling; the long run lengths meant drivers could be remote, to ensure no shadowing or complex cabling. Quick-release leader cables and joints also facilitated easy maintenance. To highlight the columns that demarcate the space, LDI selected acdc CIRO Ultra White for its small size and flexibility, wrapping it around the curved profile to wash light down the columns. In order to dim and balance the lighting effects, DALI constant voltage drivers were used to control the luminaires. Rollins added: ‘CIRO and ORELLE were an ideal partnership for this project, utilising the same LEDs and colour consistency from two physically different products, each with advantages. ORELLE offers robust lower budget long runs of lighting, while CIRO offers small size for tight detailing, and more flexibly for curves.’ 52 • A P R I L 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

Popular pop-up A short-lived but extremely popular restaurant featured at London’s designjunction event. The concept behind the TFL Year of the Bus restaurant and bar was to create an open plan space with a combination of eating areas, comprising central communal dining tables and benches as well as a more traditional café/bistro style area. This simple, pared-back approach was perfectly echoed in the selection of the newly launched Type 75 Maxi pendant fittings from Angleposie. Of course, the majority of restaurants are designed for a longer lifespan, as with Chilango, in Camden. PNLD was given a brief to drive the brand’s iconic interior design evolution, moving the theme from back street Mexico to a shabby-chic, motel-style aesthetic. Vivid colour, a sense of fun, and a sprinkling of Latin spirit is at the heart of the lighting design. Working in collaboration with the interior design team, PNLD created permeable lighting that draws the eye through and around the restaurant, highlighting the colourful interior. The architectural lighting scheme is bold, striking, and exciting, in support of Chilango’s brand aesthetic, but the solution is also low-energy, simple, and cost effective. Atmospheric lighting in the form of ceiling fans gives the impression that the restaurant is enjoying the hot Latin American climate. Making the most of the compact space, PNLD delivered integrated lighting to the skylight void to visually increase the ceiling height, while light features on the wall aid permeability, drawing the eye to the back of the restaurant. A lighting control system has been employed to provide flexible and dynamic illumination levels that change from day to night, encouraging visitors in at night. Low-level illumination has been provided in the form of table lamps and shelf lighting, to ensure there is an intimate and cosy atmosphere in the evenings, when the ambient lighting is dimmed down.

OLD TOM & ENGLISH

Karen Smart, lighting designer at PNLD, said: ‘The lighting design for Chilango’s is right on brand; it helps set the scene, and demonstrates how the use of colour in illumination can bring interior design to life to enhance the customer experience. ‘Light fittings considered dated and unfashionable by modern standards are used to help re-enforce the brand concept, and give customers a taste of a fun, and vibrant Mexico City experience, yet despite the dated appearance, the latest lighting technology has been used throughout, with most of the luminaires using LED lamp sources.’ Old Tom & English is another of London’s atmospheric restaurants, this time with lighting and interior design by Lee Broom. The venue features various lighting styles including: wooden fittings from the One Light Only collection, and a number of different marble lighting from his latest collection, Nouveau Rebel. ‘I have designed a complete venue concept for Old Tom & English, combining all aspects, including the interior, branding, and elements of the service concept,’ explained Broom. ‘Marble features throughout the venue in the lighting, the furniture, and right through to the barware and tableware we have created. It is a dream project for a designer and I believe will be a real gem for Soho’.

Finally, we take a look at Éclectic, the latest venue from critically acclaimed restaurateurs, Fabienne and Philippe Amzalak, who enlisted the help of design empresario, Tom Dixon for the high-end Paris dining experience. The result is a dramatically lit interior, that references the 1970’s heritage of the building, yet uses the latest in LED lighting technology to create impact and drama. By using more than 120 Megaman LED Classic 7W lamps, the scheme will also deliver huge savings in electricity costs.Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio was commissioned to create a scheme that would make the most of the stark concrete interior of the restaurant. Using the building’s heritage, Dixon chose the Cell pendant to light Éclectic. Clusters of the pendants have been hung from circular acoustic panels, constructed Chelsom. Located in the main dining room and private dining booths, they create a visual backdrop to the breathtaking 3.5m diameter chandelier that hangs in the centre of the restaurant. Containing 124 Cell pendants, the central chandelier looks dramatic, yet uses minimal energy, thanks to the incorporation of LED lamps. The company’s creative director, Tom Dixon, commented: ‘Drawing inspiration from the 1970s architecture surrounding the restaurant, the design plays with colour, simple repeat modules, and clean geometry. ‘The design intends to soften the hard finishes of the contemporary building; warmth and comfort are the key drivers for the interior finishes, and the whole restaurant is furnished in abundance with custom-designed products. The LEDs add warmth and sophistication to the scheme.’ Éclectic is a testament to the power of combining quality design with elegant LED lighting, and of course, great food!

Flower POWER

Claudia Paz and Nicholas Cheung light the imagination of shoppers in Lima’s Plaza Norte

L

ight Garden is a permanent interactive landscape of light, sound and experience, designed to transport us into a magical world, and reminds us of the early childhood fantasies that we used to create.

Inspiration and concept Light Garden is a playful combination of suspended flowers, projected floor petals, and surreal sounds. Colourful shapes bounce off the glossy floor, creating three-dimensional patterns of light. The complex interactive technology melts away, producing a real-world cinematic experience that is influenced by people moving through the space.

Experience and interaction Designer, Claudia Paz explained: ‘We designed the installation to have multiple layers of lighting effects in the space; on the plaza floor are individual petal projections, hanging in the middle of the space are giant sculptural flowers, and on the ceiling are multi-coloured patterns of light. These elements combine with the reflection off the glass walls and marble floors to create a flowery kaleidoscopic landscape. ‘The petals invite you into this magical world by tempting you to engage with them, opening up your mind and body to enjoy the experience, by feeling free to walk, jump or dance. ‘For children this is a natural environment, which is similar to their imaginary world. They intuitively explore this mysterious landscape, and bring a sense of playfulness to adults who are inspired to join in. Interactive games are intertwined with the installations’ lighting and acoustic shows and these games create a social experience.’ She continued: ‘We designed six shows with different lighting and acoustic experiences. These different games provide unique experiences using interactive programming, which intelligently responds to the number of people it senses inside the installation’.

Project arrangement The circulation space of a retail mall was transformed into a public place for families to share a charming experience. Light Garden is an installation that was designed with three layers of lighting effects: the floor has 150 petal projections and, hanging from a cable suspension system, are 30 flower-shaped light sculptures, in three different sizes. Finally, 10 high-powered gobos shine large flower patterns onto a canopy ceiling above. The flower motif design originated from the logo of Plaza Norte, so the client’s message is sensitively interwoven into the playful experience. The flowers consist of five petal-shaped light boxes that contain RGBW LED lights, which provide subtle shades of pastel light. Inside the flower’s core are five bespoke LED gobos, that shine white petals directly onto the floor below. These are interactive and individually controlled, with a tracking camera also located inside the flower’s core.

The control system The control system consists of an interactive computer and a DMX lighting controller. These are closely integrated with the tracking cameras, providing live lighting control output to the flower sculptures and multi-channel sounds to the audio system. Paz says: ‘The interactive sensors consist of thirty cameras, allowing the installation to respond with different levels of complexity, depending on the number of people present. These suspended flowers respond in an individual and collective way as people step on the petals. But all the technology melts away to create a natural experience where one’s own imagination is transported into the real world.’

s Giorgio Armani so eloquently put it, “The difference between style and fashion is quality”. The Wandsworth Group couldn’t agree more. That’s why their range of superlatively designed, hand crafted electrical accessories are used by worldclass interior designers and architects in prestigious building projects from Hong Kong to New York - even in the private residence of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge at Kensington Palace. Their reputation for providing stylishly designed, beautifully realised lighting and electrical wares means that Wandsworth products and expertise are sought out by a host of discerning design professionals - particularly in projects where the importance of elegance is on a par with peerless quality. This is evidenced by their involvement in a number of prominent hotel developments across the world but most recently with the newest addition to the famous Firmdale Hotel’s stable: The Ham Yard Hotel in central London. Situated in the bustling centre of the capital’s famous Soho district the Ham Yard Hotel is owned by Tim and Kit Kemp, both internationally recognised interior designers famous for outstanding excellence in modern British design - Tim having previously won the coveted Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year award in 2008. Together they have made Firmdale’s 9 hotels and

7 bars & restaurants, located in both London and New York, beacons of service excellence and unique design. Kit in particular has been personally responsible for carrying out the complete interior design of all of the properties - no less so than when the Ham Yard Hotel building project was begun in 2012. From the very beginning Wandsworth Group were actively involved in the establishment of this £60 million luxurious boutique hotel development. Consisting of 91 individually themed deluxe bedrooms and sumptuous suites, as well as airy bar and contemporary restaurant areas, the Ham Yard Hotel project included a lavish drawing room and library. In addition, this expansive new development featured a spa and gym, numerous private dining and meeting rooms, as well as an original 1950’s era bowling alley and rooftop garden, complete with sweeping vistas of the Soho skyline and the city beyond. As a new build project with such a relentless focus on individual style, modern design and matchless quality Wandsworth Group worked closely with the client’s project manager,

the contractors and the architect to understand the requirements for all the electrical accessories needed from the outset. With over a century of expertise in providing high quality, luxury light and socket fittings, Wandsworth worked in close concert with all of the interior design parties to offer ideas and suggestions on the best solutions to complement the individual modern British style so prevalent throughout the hotel. The Wandsworth Group’s diligent project team assisted the clients and the contractor’s site manager in producing a complete, full size mock up of the rooms required - enabling a much more holistic overview of the impact of all the interior design proposals. Following on from this Firmdale Hotels felt assured that Wandsworth Groups Classic Collection of electrical accessories was the perfect fit for the high levels of design quality, reliability and elegance inherent in the personalised room designs of Kit Kemp.

COMMERCIAL FEATURE

The Classic Collection was chosen due to its ergonomically attractive flush finish featuring a unique flat plate profile to compliment the contemporary modern British design. Whilst those selected for the Ham Yard Hotel were supplied in ultra-clean, Super Mirrored Stainless Steel, as a market leader who is able to boast of offering the largest variety of colours on the market, the Classic Collection is available in a dizzying array of finishes, including: • • • • • • • • • • •

Polished Brass Antique Bronze Bright Nickel Satin Nickel Antique Brass Light Bronze Matt Black Satin Silver Satin Stainless Steel White Yellow Etched Prime

Needless to say, all of Wandsworth’s bespoke multi-service, AV plates and screw fixing plate attachments are individually manufactured from the highest grade solid brass, premium stainless steel or aluminium, as required. Wandsworth are shamelessly uncompromising when it comes to ensuring that the quality of product meets the high standards of style demanded by national and international customers. As you would expect for the Ham Yard hotel the Wandsworth Group project managers were only too happy to provide standard and bespoke accessories (both Multi-service and AV plates) specifically tailored to Firmdale’s requirements. In the case of the Ham Yard boutique hotel project these included a data outlet and American style two pin socket as well

as a standard 13 amp plug, which were installed throughout the building. Wandsworth’s involvement was not simply limited to lighting and electrical sockets for this particular project. At the client’s invitation, Wandsworth were all also delighted to provide individually designed and constructed disabled toilet alarm systems (again, in the same style as the Classic Collection Super Mirrored Stainless Steel). Right through the overall project lifecycle of just over two and a half years the Wandsworth Group’s staff kept in constant contact with all parties, from the clients own representatives to the M & E consultants, Mecserve, and the electrical contractors, LJJ of Stockton. By maintaining continual communication and making numerous site visits Wandsworth were able to react quickly and decisively to any

changes in the original specifications, design alterations and other unexpected project developments. Wandsworth offer this kind of end to end service as standard, meaning their clients receive a consistently high level of customer service, as well as seeing deadlines met. This was particularly appreciated by LJJ, who were responsible for the installation of the high end, luxury electrical accessories supplied. As demonstrated throughout the Ham Yard project Wandsworth Group is a firm which is consistently chosen to work with and deliver to large scale projects across the globe. Taking pride in their reputation as the ‘go-to’ firm for clients looking for high spec, hand finished products - something which is demonstrated by the fact that Wandsworth’s electrical accessories are used extensively in the construction, repair and renovation of countless landmark buildings across the world. The premium electrical accessories which are handcrafted and tested beyond the highest industry standards by a British workforce are valued by top class interior designers and architects all of whom recognise their brand as a market leading innovator and supplier of peerless quality. The Ham Yard Hotel project was completed on 1st June 2014 and the hotel is already a popular place to stay for many visitors to the capital who have been entranced by its chic urban village feel and Kit Kemp’s stunning modern British interior styling. Located in the heart of the cosmopolitan Soho district the Ham Yard Hotel is also proving to be a big hit with savvy Londoners looking for a convenient place to rendezvous, relax, enjoy a drink or indulge in a fabulous dining experience, all within easy walking distance of the city of Westminster. For the people who make up the Wandsworth Group - from the skilled designers and craftsmen to the individual project managers - it is a source of great pride that Firmdale Hotels, leading interior stylists and renowned architects around the world continue to choose them for electrical accessories that live up to their high standards of class, elegance, reliability and quality. If Giorgio Armani had been an interior designer it’s nice to think he would approve. C O N TA C T O1483 713400 www.wandsworthelectrical.com info@wandsworthgroup.com

SPECIALIST

OPINION

Smart venting Axel Kurz of WL Gore, and Thomas Müller from WE-EF, have joined forces to work on increasing the efficiency and lifetime of LED luminaires

A

dverse climate conditions are a major challenge for sensitive electronic components in exterior LED luminaires. The temperature differences between the LEDs and the cool ambient air can cause pressure fluctuations that deform the lamp cover, and alter the illumination characteristics. Furthermore, the pressure variations fatigue the seals, leading to potential water and dirt ingress, which shorten the life of the luminaires. Exterior lighting specialist, WE-EF solves this problem by applying a Gore venting solution: Gore protective vents prevent the ingress of water and contaminants, and at the same time equalise pressure differences. In this way, they can significantly increase the efficiency and service life of outdoor LED luminaires. The company uses RFC - or reflection free contour - technology to achieve the highest possible optical efficiency. The conventional flat glass cover is replaced by a UV-stabilized, clear, contoured acrylic panel, that follows the shape of the lens. The RFC technology ensures that light from the lens always hits the inside of the cover at a 90-degree angle of incidence. This C O N TA C T

reduces reflection losses and increases lighting efficiency by up to five per cent. To achieve this level of efficiency, pressure fluctuations in the housing must be avoided in order to prevent a vacuum. Caused by the enormous temperature differences between the LEDs, which heat up during operation, and the cooler ambient air, such pressure fluctuations would cause the acrylic cover to deform, and so alter the illumination characteristics of the emitted light.

Continuous pressure equalisation relieves stress This undesired effect can be prevented using a vent to equalise the pressure, thereby ensuring the acrylic cover retains its original shape. To achieve the desired efficiency, Gore PolyVents M12 x 1.5 HA (PMF100391) are integrated into the company’s LED street and area lighting luminaires. While the product was still in the development stage, WE-EF opted for a screw-in vent with high-airflow membrane. This meant it could be incorporated into the luminaire housing in such a way that it remained invisible from the outside, and didn’t impact the overall design.

With the built-in vent, pressure fluctuations are equalised reliably, and less strain is put on the seals, ensuring the sensitive interior electronics are protected against moisture penetration.

Venting solutions optimise LED efficiency and reliability ‘What characterises Gore vents is their long service life,’ explained Thomas Müller, general sales manager at WE-EF. ‘We’ve not had a single product failure so far, and we’re very satisfied with this particular solution.’ Fitting the vents greatly increases the longevity of the entire lighting system, and also guarantees the reliability of the newly employed RFC technology, assuring the efficiency of the luminaire. This added value is a convincing selling point: effective protection of the components inside the housing is a must if the luminaires are to work without failing for 20-plus years. ‘We ensure our products achieve an IP66 rating, which gives electronics and LEDs a rated life of 60,000 hours,’ continued Müller. ‘The only way to do this is with a high performance venting solution and reliable seals.

WL Gore www.gore.co.uk/protectivevents WE-EF Leuchten www.we-ef.com

Temperatures inside a luminaire can easily reach +65 °C, but can drop to +15 °C within 10 minutes during a storm. In a vented housing, this causes no pressure differential, because the vent allows the pressure to equalise easily. Without a vent, the housing is subjected to a pressure of -140 mbar, which causes dirt and moisture to be sucked in via the seal. www.tlmagazine.co.uk • A P R I L 2 0 1 5 • 67

Phosco AeroFlow 速 Road Lighting AeroFlow速 Cooling System

The simple, state-of-the-art design of the P850 and P851 gives direct thermal transfer from the LEDs to the entire body. Unique aerodynamic vents created by the vertical fins and the outer rim are designed to accelerate natural convection through the heatsink. Each airway is heated and the rising hot air draws cold air in from the bottom, immediately cooling the LEDs. On leaving the vents, the hot air converges smoothly into a laminar flow, quickly removing heat from the luminaire.

Longitudinal Thermal Distribution

Most high power luminaires that use modular LED panels have issues of centralised heating. LEDs in the centre of the luminaire cannot be cooled as effectively as those near the edge, with a shorter lifetime and faster depreciation of performance. The P850 and P851 address this problem elegantly by using linear PCBs on the sides. Fewer high powered LEDs, placed strategically along the luminaire, allows the unique geometry of the housing to maintain all LEDs at an even low temperature.

A former car park site in Gibraltar has been transformed into a sustainable park for day and night, boasting traditional British values in a Mediterranean cutting edge style

T PHOTOGRAPHY: DAVID PARODY, MOSES ANAHORY

he Commonwealth Park is home to 135 different species of tree, and features lakes, grassed mounds and decking areas, with the dramatic historic backdrop of the King’s Bastion and city walls. DALD worked alongside the landscape architect to create an exciting, but subtle lighting scheme for the park, while adhering to conservation requirements, security, energy efficiency, and sustainability. The historic curved perimeter King’s Bastion wall to the north end of the site is up-lit by a series of buried fixtures, fitted with a tiltable medium and narrow beam optic, which helps accentuate the contours. A 4000 Kelvin LED light source was chosen to enhance the colour of the grey stone.

The angular city wall is lit by a series of surface mounted, high output, narrow optic LED spots, which graze the wall with shafts of light. The spots are positioned directly below the structure, lined up with the piers. The upper terrace above the city wall is linked to the park via a listed tunnel, contemporary staircase, and lift. To limit any visual impact within the tunnel, internally illuminated handrails allow sufficient light to the floor. The handrails then continue from the tunnel to the external staircase that encompasses the lift shaft. To help give the lift a dynamic appearance, a series of RGBW LED sources up-light the internal glass shaft with pre-programmed colours.

The park has a perimeter road and walkway, which is illuminated by compact LED fixtures fitted with 3000 Kelvin sources, which are mounted on 3.5m vertical columns. Some of the columns increase in height to 5.5m to accommodate high output LED accent fixtures, which illuminate sculptural pieces. Finally, a walkway from the western edge of the park, is illuminated by semirecessed marker lights. As part of the intrinsic landscape design, internal tertiary paths weave through the park. Illumination of the paths is by minimalistic tubular bollards fitted with T5 lamps, with a colour temperature of 4000 kelvin. Each bollard is offset along the length of the path, which helps define the www.tlmagazine.co.uk • A P R I L 2 0 1 5 • 75

flowing landscape design. To the north and south of the park, there are decking areas that incorporate adjustable recessed LED fixtures. The fixtures, which uplight planting against the city wall, are fitted with warm white LED (3000K). Throughout the park, benches are under-lit by recessed LED strips, which project a soft diffused glow below the seating areas. The central area consists of perimeter planting, benches and monolithic water feature columns. Each column is fitted with a recessed custom IP68 LED ring that serves to pipe the water flow through the centre of each fixture. In addition to the integral lighting, recessed IP68 fixtures up-light each column, and are also positioned within the catchment pool, reflecting and refracting light across the column faces. An artificial lake is subtly illuminated by submerged IP68 fixtures, which pick out rock features. A bridge across the lake is lit by miniature recessed decking lights, which help to accentuate its form. A contemporary bandstand is built out into the lake, featuring a tensile roof, which is up-lit by RGBW LED sources and programmed with the lift shaft to reflect dynamic hues across the bandstand and lake. Large expanses of grass are lit by projecting dappled light, which mimics the effect of moonlight through trees. The dappled effect is created by a series of metal halide projectors attached to the top of the perimeter lighting columns. The general lighting to planting, shrubs, and trees was achieved by a variety of methods. DALD chose a limited number of sources, picking out key areas within the park, with the planting subtly modelled by single point sources. Large trees and shrubs were either uplit by buried LED sources, or externally lit from a distance using ground spike-mounted projector fittings positioned within the planting. A warm 3000 Kelvin colour temperature was chosen to enhance the greenery, and offset the planting and trees from the coolness of the walls. Control of the lighting is triggered via photocells that in turn activate lighting scenes from the control system. A basic lighting state, with limited sources is activated at midnight for access and security. Through the combination of creative lighting methods, the park has become an exciting, dynamic, and safe space after dusk.

PEOPLE

MINUTES WITH

Rob Chadwick What is your favourite light source, and why? As an LED specialist, I’m bound to say LED, aren’t I? But actually I do believe that they provide the scope to create more interesting and functional lighting designs. Modern buildings are all about flexibility and sustainability, and LEDs are the ideal way to incorporate both of those goals into the lighting installation.

This month’s bite-sized chunk of whimsy is from Rob Chadwick, from LED specialist, One Electrical

Every time we look through the window, day or night, we’re reminded just how much difference lighting can make to the way a building looks’

CON T AC T

One Electrical www.onelectrical.com

Building facades lit with colour – for or against? I’m both for and against…depending on the building. I definitely think there’s too much of it going on, and not enough thought goes into whether the style of exterior lighting matches the façade in question. As a general rule, I would say that coloured lighting works best with contemporary buildings, and can look great when reflected in a glass tower. For heritage buildings, however, neutral lighting will show the detail in the façade to its best advantage, and is most in keeping with traditional design. Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting? Apple are great on design and, whatever technology glitches they might have been criticised for recently, the simplicity of design and the way they evolve a design concept to refresh the look, is really iconic. The Apple logo is so simple, yet so effective, and you only need to look at how Apple’s classic white iPhones have influenced everything from office interiors to cars, to see just how game changing the designs are. Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? It would have been great to have been involved in the Burj Khalifa, which is not only the world’s tallest building and a fabulous lighting installation, but is just opposite our office in Dubai! Every time we look through the window, day or night, we’re reminded just how much difference lighting can make to the way a building looks. After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance? Advances in lighting technology are being driven by updates to building regulations, because it means that investment in R&D will be rewarded by market demand. There’s still plenty of scope for development of LED

technology, and we predict that changes in fire-rated LED downlights will be the next major growth area. Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we achieve it? Sustainable lighting is achievable now thanks to the LED and lighting control technology available. The challenge now is persuading building owners, occupiers, and managers, to make the change to sustainable lighting technology, by educating them about the payback periods and finance options. For example, we have recently formed a partnership with Siemens to offer a Carbon Trust-approved capex-free funding solution, which enables end users to reap the cost and energy saving benefits without having to release capital to fund conversion. What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting? The domestic market has mainly gone down the route of retrofit LED lamps to fit into conventional light fittings. The next stage on from that is seeing more complete LED luminaires going into domestic property. Moving from retrofit to complete LED luminaire in the commericial sector has seen improved light levels, superior quality, and long term solutions. We will certainly begin to see this trend more in the domestic market, with further developments in domestic LED luminaires, and by educating the end user. Why do you think lighting is bucking the general trend and showing such strong growth? Lighting is a need-to-have rather than a nice-to-have purchase, for both residential and commercial environments, so even when times were tough, sales remained consistent. Add to that the operational cost savings offered by LEDs, and the drive to reduce emissions, and it’s easy to see the why sales have grown so dramatically over the past few years. Chandelier or candle? Neither…LEDs all the way! Is there one declining light source that you’ll miss above all others? If so, which is it, and why? Halogen GU10’s, because now they’re no longer pumping heat into the house, I’ve had to turn the heating up (joke)!

Collingwood +44 (0) 1604 495 151 | www.collingwoodlighting.com Colour control – easy and versatile with RF systems from Collingwood Lighting. Collingwood Lighting has simplified the installation and operation of its colour-change lighting by launching a complete range of fittings and controllers based on RF (radio-frequency) technology. The new RF range makes colour-change lighting available to all. It involves fewer components than traditional DMX (digital multiplex) systems, it requires much less cabling, and it doesn’t rely on specialist installers. Using Collingwood’s RF components, any professional lighting installer can fit a fully functional colour-change system. The new range will be one of the most comprehensive on the market, involving wall lights, downlights, spike lights and ground lights. In fact you can choose from a total of 23 products as well as three control systems. Almost all of the luminaires within the range have been redesigned to work exclusively with RF colour-change controllers.

DANLERS 01249 443377 | www.danlers.co.uk DANLERS have announced the release of their much awaited ‘ControlZAPP’ with DIMMING capability, a ground-breaking link between stand-alone controls and the sophisticated, but expensive managed systems. Featuring Bluetooth ‘Smart’ communication ControlZAPP can be used to remotely set-up, adjust or override settings such as daylight linked dimming (DALI or 1-10V ballasts) occupancy detection, time lags, photocell threshold etc into a pre-determined real time schedule. ControlZAPP has the flexibility to schedule scenarios and function changes at different times of the day or days of the week - adjusting lux levels, short visit modes, changes to normal working hours etc. This unique combination of a stand-alone energy saving control plus real time scheduling increases energy saving and improves end user comfort at a low cost.

Astro www.astrolighting.co.uk Ginestra - industrial echoes, distinctly Astro The brief for Astro’s genre-defying Ginestra was simple: “Create an outstanding addition to our family of metal pendants with an industrial feel but entirely distinct identity.” The design office gestation is over and Ginestra is now available from Astro, the British lighting success story whose extraordinary 20 percent average annual growth since its foundation in 1997 has included sales in more 70 countries. “Rather than create another reproduction industrial pendant, we went our own way, as we are prone to do,” said Astro design director and cofounder James Bassant. “There is a retro reference but the execution is entirely modern and individual.” The luminaire offers considerable design flexibility: There are two size choices and standard lamps, LEDs or decorative filaments lamps (squirrel cage) can be used. As such Ginestra can play the lead or supporting role in a variety of upmarket domestic or hospitality design schemes.
