As part of the ‘Slam Dunk Smoking’ campaign, Riders’ Head Coach Billy Mims and his team worked with year 7 students from all the schools in Leicester. “This was a fantastic project for the Riders to be involved with,” said Mims. “Leicester prides itself on being the Sporting Capital of England and we want our future sporting stars to know that smoking and sport don’t mix. Our players are used to slam dunking on the court, now they can help Leicester to Slam Dunk Smoking!”

They were also set tasks to help spread the message to other young people about the dangers of smoking. On top of this, the kids received top class basketball coaching from the stars of the Riders squad.

In what was a surprisingly free-flowing contest in the wet, the Bulls enjoyed a 4-3 try count in the initial 40 minutes. It was a dream start, Robbie Paul grabbing the first try with just 79 seconds on the clock. But the Knights responded instantly as they launched their first of many attacks down the right flank. he Bulls finished the half the stronger but it ended in disappointment with Paul's neck injury. He did not return after the break, but Bradford started the second half as they did the first by scoring on their first possession. This time it came from a penalty as the Knights obstructed, but Deacon duly knocked it over to extend his perfect goal record to six from six. Handling errors became more pronounced as the rain worsened, but the Bulls again capitalised as powerful Kiwi winger Lesley Vainikolo opened his account for the club as he powered down the touchline from a James Lowes pass to score. Deacon soon added the extras to Withers' second try as the Bulls all but put the game out of reach. Johns clawed six points back as he slid through the mud for his second try and converted, but then Deacon added a drop goal and a penalty. Hooker Danny Buderus went between the uprights for a late Knights consolation.

The Kangaroo Tour SIMON MOWBRAY REPORTS HOW THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE WENT HEAD-TO-HEAD IN THE CONTROVERSIAL KANGAROO TOUR. BOTH TEAMS, OF COURSE, FUELLED BY BIO-SYNERGY SPORTS NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS.

ever before had a Kangaroo tour been surrounded by such controversy. World events initially forced the cancellation of the three match test series. However, the subsequent public outcry, on both sides of the world, forced the Aussies to rescind their decision. Senior players, including captain Brad Fittler and star scrum-half Andrew Johns, rejoined the fold, and a squad that had initially seemed somewhat inexperienced again looked nothing short of awesome. The on-off build-up, which had left the public on tenterhooks, had now turned into the most eagerly awaited test series in decades.

N

First test (McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield, 11 November) n injury list that included hooker Keiron Cunningham, scrum-half Sean Long and forward Adrian Morley, forced the Great Britain coaching staff to play their cards close to their chest. The Kangaroo line-up was led by Fittler, with Johns, full-back Darren Lockyer and wünderkind Jamie Lyon catching the eye. But nothing would prepare them, or the sell-out crowd, for the reception Great Britain coach David Waite had planned. From the first whistle, GB tore into the Green-and-Golds as Gary Connelly and Jamie Peacock fashioned a try for the home side after just 82 seconds. Standout performances from captain Andy Farrell and prop Barrie McDermott, plus a storming attacking display from two-try stand-off Paul Sculthorpe, left the Aussies in no doubt that this test series would be quite a contest.

A

s Britain ran out 20-12 winners, the noise inside the stadium reached unprecedented levels. The confidence running through this GB squad and their supporters, might just wrestle the Ashes back for the first time since 1970.

A 6 TOTALNRG

Second test (Reebok Stadium, Bolton, 19 November) fter hiding behind excuses such as poor preparation and jetlag, the Aussies put the onus on GB to prove that the previous week’s result was no flash in the pan. However, the Ashes holders were in no mind to relinquish the tag ‘World’s Greatest Rugby Team’ in a hurry. Johns, who finished with a personal tally of two tries and five conversions, and Lockyer ran riot. Fittler scored after five minutes and Australia never released their grip, finishing 40-12 winners. If GB could meet the standards they set in the First Test, and the Kangaroos continued to play as they did in the Second, the decider would be a classic. It was.

A

Third test (JJB Stadium, Wigan, 25 November) lory awaited the side who could hold their nerve. The match would be of such intensity, one coach would finish it in hospital and the other would be safe in the knowledge that his squad was on the verge of great things. The Kangaroos threw caution to the chilly Wigan wind and adopted a game plan to cover every inch of the field. Britain’s stern defence would not be breached up the middle, but the expansive game the Kangaroos pride themselves on saw them enter the half-time break 12-6 up.

G

y now, their coach Chris Anderson had been taken to hospital after suffering a heart attack, but this redoubled Aussie resolve. Despite a stunning attacking performance by GB centre Keith Senior, the Kangaroos ran out 28-8 winners. The Aussies, despite reaffirming themselves as a team without equal, are certainly within sight.

Nam Pai Chuan 2002 he Shaolin Kung-Fu System Nam Pai Chuan (NPC) are members of the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts (BCCMA). The origins of the system lie in the Shaolin style known as "Fatt Gar Kuen", taught in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The historical roots lie in the monastic Shaolin tradition in the southern Fukien province of China. One of the Grandmasters of the NPC style is the renowned Abbot Seh-Koh-San who, until his death in 1960, was Chief Abbot of the Shoalin Siong Lim temple, Singapore.

T

PC is one of the styles in the rich and vast panoply of Chinese Martial Arts. NPC is a very broad style, incorporating all the elements of the true martial arts. Thus the system embodies many techniques; kicking, punching, locking (chin-na), take-downs etc. in combination with each other. Being a broad system NPC is able to encompass many elements that could be seen as 'styles' in their own right. There is a very rich weapons heritage, with 18 traditional weapons taught in the System. There are also styles based upon the various animal forms prevalent in Chinese martial arts, such as the Monkey, Tiger and Snake forms, to name but a few. However, NPC is very much more than just a physical manifestation of martial arts. Chi-Gung Breathing exercises play an important role, helping internal conditioning through control of the body's chi.

N

io-synergy were proud sponsors of the national competition which turned out to be a magnificent event and bore witness to some great feats of both mental and physical ability. The competition was staged in Chiswick (London) and hosted clubs from all over the country. The event comprised an array of different fields that included weapons and open hand forms, team male and female sparring, children individual sparring and black belt male and female individual sparring. The clashes between the clubs from the outset was exiting and vibrant, with neither of the opposing teams wanting to give much away to each other in the opening bouts with many of the fights having to go to deciding rounds. The energy levels being consumed were enormous and carried with it a notable sense of achievement for the competitors, especially those who had to take up further encounters in the later stages of the competition. However bio-synergy was there to play its part, re-hydrating all with its fluid replacement drink Liquid NRG.

B

nly after a few rounds of intensive sparring was there time to take breath and witness another great aspect of the event, the weapons and forms competition. This turned out to be one of the most interesting and entertaining parts of the day with competitors not only showing great physical skill but also

O

impressed in their ability to understand the art. This included traditional forms such as jee-kee-boay and weapons forms such as the broad sword, the fan and the spear. The winners included for the junior belts open hand Esther Kissling (Sussex), for weapons (spear) Rachel Robinson (Shenley) and weapons (sword) Andrew Crocket (Kings). For the black belts both the open hand and weapons competition was awarded to an impressive Sin Chi Wu (Chiswick). he climax of this highly exciting and enjoyable day ended with Margaret Durbal from Imperial College being victorious in the women’s individual black belt sparring competition, Hauke Schremf (Kings) being victorious in the male individual black belt competition, and Imperial College being winners in the women's team competition. However the final event of the day was the male team sparring final with Cardiff taking on the hosts Chiswick, both being very impressive in the earlier rounds, with Chiswick prevailing victorious after a hard fought contest. There were however, no losers with every competitor putting on a display that contributed to an extremely high standard of competition. TRAINING ADVICE

The importance of

core training any of the major muscles of your shoulders, arms, and legs are attached to the pelvic bones and/or the spine, the core. If your trunk muscles are well conditioned, you will enjoy optimal transfer of energy from large to small muscles when you sprint, twist, lift, jump, throw, and perform other movements in your sport. Moreover, if the core is well trained, you are less likely to be injured in training or competition. What’s the best way to strengthen your core? Here are some tips recommended by strength coaches and other training experts.

M

Perform core training at the beginning of each workout and make certain that you select exercises that are safe but challenging to your nerves, muscles, and bones. PRODUCTS FOR CORE TRAINING Begin your core training with simple exercises: ab crunches, back extensions, squat lifts, deadlifts, leg presses, lunges, leg raises, bridging exercises, pull-ups, and pull-downs all use the core muscles.

ab-slider £25.00

As you improve, progress to more complex exercises that more closely mimic the specific dynamic movements required in your sport. For example, football linemen might practice driving off the line of scrimmage against larger team members, and wrestlers might participate in escape drills against training partners who provide varied resistance to the movements. Training with partners who provide unpredictable resistance in varying directions at varying speed helps train both your muscles and your nervous system to react quickly to changing environments.

yoga mat £19.99

stability ball £29.99 see feature, p9 Probably the most popular accessory for strengthening the “core” and is the stability ball. The stability ball allows you to introduce a number of tough new exercises in to your regime either at home or at the gym. Shown opposite are just some of the exercises using the stability ball that are effective in achieving core strength. For more information on stability ball training ask at your gym or visit www.bio-synergy.co.uk.

8 TOTALNRG

In the early stages of your training perform the exercises at controlled rates with light to moderate resistance. This helps build up your muscles and joints so that you will be less susceptible to injury. Later, progress to more explosive movements against heavier loads, similar to those you might encounter during competition in your sport. Vary the movements and the types of resistance that must be overcome. This will reduce boredom and risk of injury and will help you stick to your training regime.

Always perform your exercises carefully and establish proper body balance while doing so. This will not only enable you to get the most out of your training, but it will also help minimise your risk of injury. Consider performing some of your exercises on unstable surfaces such as foam mats or balance boards to improve your body’s ability to achieve stability and balance in the changing environments of sport. Consider performing trunk rotations and trunk flexions/extensions with medicine balls and using rubber band devices as resistance tools. This may more closely mimic the changing resistances you encounter in your sport compared to using dumbbells and barbells. Don’t exercise one body part to the exclusion of others. In other words, spend as much time training the muscles of your back as you do the muscles of your abdomen. Otherwise, you are less likely to achieve optimal stability of your spine and pelvis and you are more likely to be injured because of an imbalance of muscle strength. Improve the flexibility of your trunk and hips. Increasing your flexibility will help extend the range over which you can perform your movements and may decrease your chances of being injured. Be consistent in your training. If you stick with your training plan, you are much more likely to achieve success than if you train erratically. INFORMATION FROM GSSI WEBSITE

Don’t leave it too late though: the hormone melatonin is produced during darkness and encourages the body to sleep – and if you have revved your body up with fast-paced exercise, it may take a while for it to calm down to allow you to get to sleep.

• Appear as the ‘face of fitness’ on the cover of bio-synergy’s Total NRG and in advertisements to be featured in fitness and lifestyle magazines such as Men’s Health and Ultrafit.

hen you get back from the gym, don’t eat a huge meal if you’re trying to lose weight. Your metabolism is winding down and will not burn off the calories as quickly. Better to have a larger lunch and something smaller for dinner.

• A day’s gym pass for a Fitness First club near you.

igel is a 64 year old part-time private car hire driver. Nigel is also one of the fittest, healthiest, and most enthusiastic men of his age you could ever meet. Nigel has gone through a very bad time in the last eleven years, starting with the loss of his business and the end of his marriage in January 1999. You name it and Nigel has experienced it but somehow he has managed to put all of that behind him. In 1993, Nigel organised an abseil down Sainsbury's High Wycombe and raised over £10,000 for National Children’s Home. He also ran in the Wycombe Half Marathon, raising £1,500 for the local Eating Disorders Association Charity.

In his younger days Nigel had been very fit. His sport was rowing and he had rowed up to the age of 38 so he knew all about how hard it was going to be to get back into training. He was just under 16 stone and had a waist of 42 inches. Nigel had tried out virtually every diet. He had joined local gyms and for some reason or other nothing worked for him. Just over a year ago, he hit on the idea of buying exercise equipment that he could use in his home, a set of weights and a bench. Nigel bought books and magazines on the subject and looked at exercise schemes on the internet, working out his own scheme to lose weight and tone his body.

t all really started when Nigel realised how overweight, unfit and thoroughly run down and depressed he was after his wife left. His doctor suggested a drug that would lift his depression but he turned that down on moral grounds. He then happened to read in a Men’s Magazine about nutritional supplements that would give him back his selfconfidence, and give him energy and vigour. There were articles detailing vitamins that would be a health benefit so Nigel decided to take the plunge and purchase them. If Nigel’s honest he was really surprised how quickly they worked for him. After just four days he was full of life and began to pull himself together.

Nigel to be happy at last.
