An old tablecloth was put on the table and covered with a length of brown craft paper. I fringed the ends of the craft paper ala Martha Stewart, and then drew rectangles on for placemats. The kids were later able to color the placemats themselves…and keep them busy for a few moments. The first project I did with the kids is make the napkins. This was an ahead of time project. We used a stencil, so they were able to dab paint on with. Each place setting got a votive filled with crayons and a little matchbook-style pack of papers to draw on. Each child had a special place card made with their name on it to make them feel a little more important!

Our Interview with Carolyn Harrington, Founder of Maty’s

How did you come up with Maty’s Healthy Products? Tell us a little about yourself and your how your business came to be.

15 years ago my daughter Maty was born with severe heart defects. She had three heart surgeries; two of them open heart before age 5. As a result, I started researching natural ways of getting her healthy and keeping her that way. I would read any health information I could get my hands on and even became a certified Holistic Health Practitioner. Throughout my years of doing research, I came across natural remedies that I further enhanced with the knowledge I had learned. Then in the spring of 2009, we released our first remedies, which were the All Natural Cough Syrup and the All Natural Kids Cough Syrup.

What was your background prior to creating your product line?

My background is in software engineering. I graduated with a computer science degree from Penn State University and worked in the telecommunications industry. Once my first of four children was born, I quit working to raise them. This allowed me to devote so much time to my studies. I then became a Holistic Health Practitioner and have become certified in an applied kinesiology healing technique.

What was the first product you created? Was it a lengthy process?

The first two products I created were the All Natural Cough Syrup and the All Natural Kids Cough Syrup. Through my research we discovered the effective home remedy of combining honey with lemon and whiskey. However, I felt that if someone had a cough, most likely they had a cold, so I removed the whiskey and used my applied kinesiology techniques to determine which ingredients would boost the immune system and added them to the formula.

How soon after the creation of your first product did you realize your products could help illnesses that others may be experiencing?

While I was doing my research throughout the years, I would get family and friends calling to ask for help in getting over their ailments. I would give them some of our remedies and they seemed to really work. So even before we released them, we already knew we had an effective safe alternative to the cough medicines that were currently out there. Once we released our cough syrups, which can be taken by anyone older than one year, we realized there were few good options for children under a year. So we developed our All Natural Baby Chest Rub to provide a safe effective option for babies 3 months and older. Then we came out with a version of our chest rub for anyone older than two by bringing back the vapors with natural wintergreen and peppermint.
