GREETINGS From your Lieutenant Governor Hello Division 27, I hope that you had a memorable Fourth of July weekend, and I hope you’ve been soaking up that summer sun! As you enjoy summer vacation, please remember to take care of your health by applying sunscreen, drinking plenty of water, and staying cool. I have just gotten back from International Convention, and believe me when I say that it was an experience like none other! The 2014-2015 international board has been elected, and is featured in this issue of the Toucan Times. The International Board decides things for all of Key Club, and they’re more accessible than you would think! Our new International Trustee will be assigned to us shortly, and their contact information will be included in all future issues of the divisional newsletter. With that being said, congratulations to our district’s very own Kevin Zhang, Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 38, for being elected to the position of International Vice President! This is a great honor, and I wish him the best in his new term. In addition, our very own Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor, Ashley Yoo, has received the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lieutenant Governor award! I am very proud of her, and again I thank her for her contributions to both the division and the district. This is an honor well deserved! As we are getting into the meat of summer vacation, remember that we as Key Clubbers must carry on our duties. Continue serving your community, connecting with your Kiwanis, and, most importantly, having fun. As always, feel free to approach me with any questions or concerns! With love and in caring service,

Josh Kim

Lieutenant Governor, Division 27

“If you light yourself on fire with passion, people will come from miles away to watch you burn” -IP District Secretary Hakikat Bains

GREETINGS From your International Vice President Hello Pacific Northwest District Key Clubbers! Over this past week, I along with 39 other PNW Key Clubbers and six Kiwanis chaperones had the opportunity to attend the 71st annual International Convention in the vibrant city of Anaheim, California. While there, we had the opportunity to attend educational workshops, meet Key Clubbers from across the world, and elect the 2014-2015 Key Club International Board. I am truly humbled and honored to announce that I was chosen out of a field of four other highly qualified candidates to be your next International Vice President. My biggest support throughout the entire journey, from the moment I decided to run until my name was announced on stage, was the entire Pacific Northwest District. So let me take this time to thank every single one of you- all 13,000+ members. It was your support that got me through not only ICON week but the months leading up to it. Thank you to everyone that messaged be “good luck and to all of those that congratulated me afterwards. Even though many of you did not attend ICON 2014, I still felt as if all of you were alongside me. I look forward to personally thanking many of you as I travel to some of the upcoming area rallies. To all the graduating seniors, even though I will not have the opportunity to serve you for this upcoming year, I hope that many of you will decide to join Circle K in college and eventually Kiwanis. Once again, THANK YOU to the mighty Pacific Northwest District! I look forward to yet another fantastic year of service, friendship, and growth not only for Key Club International but also for our district! In Service,

Kevin Zhang

APPLY TO BE THE VERY FIRST

DIVISIONAL EXEC Hello Toucans! In the month of August, I will be appointing a Divisional Executive Assistant. Any member in good standing is welcomed to apply! This is a great opportunity to get yourself more involved in the division, as well as further develop your leadership skills. Please keep in mind that this is an appointed position, and in no way replaces your current position. That means that if you are already an officer you must continue to carry out your duties. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Josh Kim Lieutenant Governor, Division 27

WHAT DOES A DEA DO?

12

A Divisional Executive Assistant assists the Lieutenant Governor with running the division. DEA’s will help run DCMs, prepare copies of agenda, assist Presidents and Secretaries with their reports, and will further their service to their home, school, and community. Other divisions in the PNW District have DEA’s, so it’s about time that Division 27 got one too!

CUTIVE ASSISTANT HOW DO I APPLY? All you have to do is fill out the application by August 1st in pdf form, and email it to joshkim.pnw27@gmail.com. Failure to submit the application by August 1st risks exclusion from the applicant pool. !

Slavery was abolished in America nearly two hundred years ago in 1865. However, it still exists not only in third world countries, but also within the comfort of America. In fact, it’s one of the fastest growing crimes in the world. With over 5.5 million children in the trafficking industry, and only 0.4% victims identified, Redlight Traffic works around the clock to save these innocent children in need. Join other Key Clubbers and #riseup against human trafficking.

UNICEF does whatever it takes to save and protect the world's most vulnerable children. Forty years ago, UNICEF figured out that promoting simple, low-cost interventions like hand washing and breastfeeding could save millions of lives. Undaunted by war or geography, UNICEF delivers.

Circle K International (CKI) is the premier collegiate and university community service, leadership development, and friendship organization in the world. With more than 12,600 members in 17 nations, CKI is making a positive impact on the world every day. Circle K clubs are organized and sponsored by a Kiwanis club on a college or university campus. KEY LEADER WHAT IS KEY LEADER? Key Leader is a service leadership program created by Kiwanis. At Key Leader, you not only get to develop your leadership skills, but you also get to meet teenagers from all sorts of different backgrounds

WHY SHOULD I DO IT? Being a diverse person is a good thing, and this is the way to do just that! Teenagers from all over will be coming to connect with strangers, and make newfound friends out of them. PNW District Board members will be in attendance, as well as Key Clubbers and non-Key Clubbers.

In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great Pacific Northwest District (PNW). The Pacific Northwest is geographically the largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the panhandle of Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing to serve!
