Introduction by Robert Harrison It does not seem like a year ago that we printed our last catalogue, how time flies. This coming year looks to be challenging for some as we have experienced a very mixed start to spring. Victoria has suffered extensive stock damage due to severe late frosts, with most of the southern states also having a cold start to spring. Rainfall has been well under the average for most of Australia and the prediction is not good for the season ahead.

We have been in similar situations in the past and have worked with the conditions we have at the time. Greenhills Propagation and Touch of Class Plants have evolved over the years, and tailored our product mix to suit the changes of economy, weather, trends, smaller blocks and unit development. We as an industry must keep looking to the future and work together, as we have in the past, as every year and every season will bring new challenges.

The past year has been very good for our industry with strong retail sales and solid demand from the landscape industry. The building and housing boom is still moving forward with low interest rates for new home buyers and strong property development Australia wide. New housing estates, industrial estates, and parkland are continuing to keep our industry vibrant.

Greenhills Propagation Nursery and Touch of Class Plants have again in the last year worked hard sourcing and trialling new plants from Australia and around the world to cater for the ever changing trends in gardening and landscape design. We are very confident in the future of our industry and have again selected a magnificent range of Australian native, perennial, and exotic plants to bring to market.

Thank you for your continuing support, we hope you enjoy this years edition of the catalogue.

Greenhills Propagation Nursery: Over thirty years of supplying quality plants for Australian garden. Quality plants start with quality tubes.

Robert found his passion early in life; from the age of ten he was working after school, on weekends and during school holidays in a local nursery. After completing his schooling Robert worked in this nursery for a further 14 ½ years and learnt from his mentors many valuable lessons, “Lessons I have never forgotten” say Robert. Robert could see a gap in the market, which was for high quality products and the introduction of new plants to the Australian industry.

In 1981 Robert built a glass house in the back yard of his father in laws property in Carrum Downs. He and Elizabeth worked long hours building their new business while raising two small children. The following year they rented land in Beaconsfield, Victoria, where they had two small igloos and no access to power.

Within a year their business had outgrown the Beaconsfield site. Robert and Elizabeth sold their family home in Narre Warren in 1983 and “took a punt,” moving to its current location – a 67 acre property in Tynong, Victoria, which now uses 17 acres for nursery purposes. Greenhills employed its first apprentice in 1987 and by 1994 had surpassed six employees. After rapid growth, Greenhills now employs around 40 full time and casual staff members, including Robert and Elizabeth’s children, Leah and Mark.

Greenhills operates as a tube stock propagation nursery which dispatches its products Australia wide. They are proud to introduce new release native and exotic plant lines from around the world into the Australian nursery industry. Greenhills Propagation supplies wholesale nurseries that grow their products to a larger size before finally being sold on to retailers.

In 2003, Touch of Class® Plants was introduced as the public brand for Greenhills Propagation Nursery. All new plants produced by Greenhills bear the Touch of Class® Plants branding at a retail level through custom labelling.

These new plants are rigorously tested prior to their release onto the market to ensure they will tolerate Australia’s vast climatic conditions. Plants in the Touch of Class® range are exclusive, improved, and of the highest quality. Touch of Class® Plants aim is to continue introducing more exciting plant varieties to Australian gardeners.
