SHOPPING BEYOND THE PLAZA

The Plaza is the focal point of the small college town of Arcata. The grassy square is flanked by boutique shopping, dive bars, and artisanal espresso. We love all of those things, but we highly recommend walking a few blocks off the Plaza to dive deeper into the Arcata shopping scene. Peridot in South Arcata’s Marsh District (145 G St. Suite E) offers a carefully curated collection of unique, highend styles from Japan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. The boutique also highlights the work of local designers and has a small selection of vintage items. The location is a bit off-the-beaten path, but the shopping experience is well worth the short walk from Arcata Plaza. Humboldt Furniture (1085 K St) is our go-to shop for vintage furniture and housewares. There’s lots of bohemian accessories that scream “dorm room,” but they also have a nice variety of mid-century, rustic and modern pieces at reasonable prices. The shopkeepers have great taste AND are welcoming and helpful, which is not a common combo in the vintage world. Arcata’s Creamery District is a vibrant, eclectic art and commerce community centered around the historic Creamery Building in Arcata. The ramshackle building itself is a local landmark, with its 80 foot high tower (now a vacation rental and studio space), roof decks, and enormous multi-paned windows. Fun, inspiring shopping is tucked into the nooks and crannies of the District, including vintage clothing at Bang Bang Vintage (824 L St), apparel at Seapod, art at MyKin Design Studio and handcrafted and antique furniture at the Back Porch (1380 9th St).
