Fire & Light was formed in 1995 as a partnership between the Arcata Community Recycling Center in Humboldt County and a group of local investors who wanted to develop a beautiful use for recycled glass. They devised a method for melting crushed glass in furnaces, adding pigment, and pressing the molten glass into bowls, plates, and glasses. The resulting rainbow-hued tableware is a truly unique local art form. Fire and Light glass can be found in homes across the region and is a popular souvenir for visitors. When we opened Humboldt Bay Provisions, we knew we wanted to serve our local food, beer and wine in Fire and Light glassware. We wanted our visitors to taste the best that Humboldt had to offer. Sipping a locally brewed beer from a Fire and Light pint glass seemed to be the perfect celebration of Humboldt’s artisan and maker community.
Watch the Fire and LIght craftsmanship in action by taking a Hot Glass tour of their factory (100 Ericson Ct, Arcata). Tours are available Mondays through Fridays at 10am and 12pm with 24 hours notice. Call 707.825.7500 to schedule a tour. Limit 15 per tour unless scheduled 30 days in advance by phone. The factory showroom is open Monday - Saturday from 9 AM - 5 PM at 100 Ericson Court Suite 100A in Arcata.
For years, the rich spectrum of colors in Fire and Light’s glassware have brightened our tasting room in Old Town. Every guest seems to have a favorite color (or several). So this year, we asked Fire and Light to help us create a unique color palette that represented our design aesthetic and the natural beauty of Humboldt Bay. The color palette we selected represent what we love about where we live and work. Icicle and Twilight evoke the shades of our oyster shells. The color of Humboldt Bay in the sunlight is Aqua. Copper conjures the salvaged redwood that we use throughout our spaces. Over the next few months, we will be transitioning to this beautiful, refined palette in all of our spaces, including the cabins and rooms at Humboldt Bay Social Club. We are deeply appreciative of the artists at Fire and Light for collaborating with us on this project and making our world a little more luminous.
