Camping holidays in Switzerland
Welcome in Switzerland
S
witzerland is a holiday resort, which offers all you may long for on a small surface. The mountains are ideal for walking, hiking and skiing. The lakes and rivers for swimming and all sort of water sports. There are bike trails, which cross the entire land, several golf courses and beautiful horseback riding paths. Pure nature is to be found in the numerous nature reserves with breathtaking views on the eternal snow covered mountains. There are various wellness and thermal bathing places for recreation and relaxing moments. The cities offer great amusement with their shops, culture such as museums and exhibitions and the exciting nightlife until the small hours.
The gastronomy is as varied as the regions. From north to south, there is always some delicious dish to
enjoy. The cheese specialties for example, are worth an exploring trip throughout the different regions with their own typical recipes. The Swiss chocolate is known as one of the best in the world and every Swiss city has its own secret way of making it. There are at least 50 different kinds of grapes, which are produced in Switzerland. This is also a good reason to explore the lakeshore of Geneva, the surroundings of the lake of Zurich and the Grison landscape. By the way: the region Lavaux, in the western part of Switzerland, belongs to the UNESCO world heritage.
Switzerland is a family friendly country, which offers unforgettable adventurous opportunities and where
adults and children may enjoy from the museums, zoos, outdoor facilities, adventure parks, theme paths, climbing facilities and much more. Even paddling down a river, catching sight of some beavers or climb on great mountain peaks watching the marmots, biking through the beautiful countryside, building sand castles or counting the stars: the unique nature of Switzerland is a wonderful playground for the whole family.
S
witzerland offers plenty of wild nature and even though there is only one national park in the upper Engadine, almost all regions have their own natural reserve. Each of these reserves astonishes because of its unique flora and its history. Walking and biking will bring you close to this wonderful nature. In Ticino, on the Monte San Giorgio which is an UNESCO world heritage, the walking tracks will carry you into a geological treasure chest, where preserved fossils show that 200 million years ago there was a 100 meter deep lake basin.
S
witzerland is like a little Europe, with its regions which differ from each other through the landscapes and the languages. Here you will find any kind of natural landscapes, such as the eternal snow, the sand beaches or the stony gorges in the southern part. Even the cities are always provided with gardens, parks and most of them with lakes and rivers. Bern is crossed by the Aare river, Zurich has 2 rivers and the lake and Geneva shares its lake with France.
Switzerland looks forward to welcome you!
Switzerland the land of the mountains‌
I
t is impossible to imagine Switzerland without mountains. A third of the Swiss surface is made of mountains and they also have a historic and geopolitical importance. Switzerland is very proud of its mountains because of many reasons. Nowhere is Europe are as many 4000 m high mountains (48 in Switzerland!) to be found. A great number of mountain railways reach the mountain peaks or platforms with stupendous views and walking paths. Choose one of the 100 mountain railways in the region you like the most. Switzerland, the land of the mountains, is a paradise for walking and biking fans. On many learning paths you will be informed about the flora and fauna and on your way you will maybe sight an ibex or a marmot.
Where are the most breathtaking views to be found?
Ten of the highest Swiss mountains are located in the Pennine Alps. De highest peak, with its 4634 m, is called Dufour and is a part of the Monte Rosa massive. The Dufour mountain peak is therefore the highest point of Switzerland. The best-known Swiss mountain of the Alps abroad is the Mattehorn (4478 m), above Zermatt. Further well-known mountains in the Bernese highland are the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. The most important peaks of the eastern Alps of Switzerland are the Piz Bernina, the easternmost four thousand meter high Alps and the Piz Palü. The heights in the Voralps are significantly less but even here there are well-known mountains such as the Pilatus in Luzern, the Titlis near Engleberg, the Rigi in the canton Schwyz or the Säntis in the eastern part of Switzerland, the Alpstein. Wonderful mountains can be admired also in Ticino. The highest mountain of the Swiss Jura is the Mont Tendre with its 1679 m. Although the best-known mountain probably the Chasseral is. Further mountains are the Dôle, the Chasseron and the Suchet.
Switzerland, the water-land‌
Because of the numerous lakes and
rivers and also because different European rivers find their origin in Switzerland, is this land often called the “water castle of Europe”. Six percent of the European fresh water comes from the Swiss Alps. Switzerland has, beside a large number of rivers, more than 1500 lakes. The two biggest lakes are shared with the neighbor lands: the lake of Geneva (Lac Léman) in the southeast with France and the Bodensee lake in the north with Austria. The biggest parts of the 1500 lakes are small mountain lakes but there are also very large lakes among them, which are very attractive vacation destinations. The contrast between mountain and water landscapes is fascinating. Water sportsmen will be very pleased with the excellent quality of the water of the lakes. Even some mountain lakes reach enjoyable bathing temperatures.
The Rhine has its origin in the Swiss Alps
and forms the natural border between Switzerland and Germany. This important waterway, which goes from Basel to the North Sea, is navigable. The Gotthard massive in the middle of Switzerland is a continental watershed: the Rhine flows from here into the North Sea, the Rhone into the Mediterranean Sea, the Ticino (Po) into the Adriatic Sea and the Inn (Danube) into the Black Sea. Withal the Swiss lakes and rivers offer great fun and adventure for everyone: walking along the lake or river shores, swimming, water sports, fishing, relaxing on a sand beach or on an island, admiring a waterfall, cruising on the lake ships, canoeing, exploring the pond landscapes, experiencing the beautiful sunsets on a mountain lake…
The Swiss water landscapes are also very
exciting for bikers. The Swiss bike track nr. 9, for example, is 500 km long and goes from Geneva across Thun, Luzern, Zug and Sargans up to Rohrschach on the Bodensee.
Switzerland, your leisure
time paradise‌
Switzerland is an excursion paradise! Whether you
choose for a walk across the meadows, through the forests, on the highest mountain peaks or you go for a walk of several days, here all your wishes will be granted. There are easy stroll tracks suitable for the whole family or sport tracks, which include climbing and staying in an Alp, hut overnight. The walking tracks are signaled and information is at large disposal both through maps or internet.
The Swiss walking track maintenance is well organ-
ized and the signage is based on guidelines, which ensue from the collaboration of the Swiss road department (ASTRA) and the Swiss Alpine Club SAC.
Switzerland is a nature paradise for active people
and “SchweizMobil” is the ideal route planner to find out about the most beautiful trips. The route net for “gentle mobility” is worldwide unique and covers the whole Swiss territory. For more information: www.schweizmobil.ch

Disentis and surroundings The Vorderrrein (anterior Rhine) counts, among the different river sources, as the official Rhine fount. It flows off the Lake Toma, or Lai da Tuma, in the Surselva at the foot of the Piz Badus near Disentis/Sedrun. It is written that the Rhine covers exactly 1324 km before it reaches the North Sea. On the Rhine fount lies the resort of Sedrun. The sunny terraces in the fresh and aromatic mountain air are ideal to restore and the Aquawellness Oase Bogn Sedrun offers great refreshment. The unique natural and cultural landscape at the Oberalppass leads up to unforgettable impressions. The cloister village of Disentis is located down the Rhine river. In the Rhine nearby Disentis people have already found several gold nuggets. The region Disentis Sedrun has 350 km of walking tracks, which are ideal to explore the natural treasures and cultural memorabilia around the Vorderrein, as for example the wonderful Benedictine constructions. Some churches of European importance, like the Sankt-Ursen-Kathedrale or the Jesuit church, are part of the city. In the neighborhood you will find the residences of the most influent families and the town hall with its museum. All kind of styles are to be admired here: from Baroque to Classic and even some ruins of a Roman boundary wall. The clock tower with its famous astronomic clock face was build in the 12.th century and is therefore the oldest construction of the city. The city organizes many cultural manifestations all over the year, such as the Swiss film festival, the Carnival, the street markets feast, the classic open air festival, the jazz festival the Swiss walking event, alternative cultural shows and theatre. The lake of Sempach and its surroundings
The lake of Sempach, right in the heart of Switzerland, is sur-
rounded by wild nature. A million years ago the ice of the Reuss glacier covered this whole region. By drawing back, the ice left the lake and the morass wetland in its place. The calm environment and the healthy air of the forests are a great balsam for people who need to regenerate. On a wide surface of walking tracks along lakes or rivers, on the hills or over the mountain of Nottwil, the jewels of nature are numerous. Sempach is located directly on the lakeshore, where the tracks and the outstanding views invite to go for a walk. After an exciting day is the sunset to be enjoyed while rowing, sailing or swimming on the lake. The history of Sempach goes back a long way. There are excavations, which testify the origin of pile-dwelling buildings into the Stone and Bronze Age. Well-known is this site however because of the bloody slaughter in 1386, where the young Winkelried sacrificed his life for victory fighting against the Habsburgs. Therefore is Sempach abounded with historical buildings such as churches, gates, towers and the well-preserved city boundary wall. In the castle of Beromünster you may discover the first book printing of Switzerland. Even the cultural aspects of

Switzerland and on the exit of the valleys, which connect north to south, such as the Gotthard, the Lukmanier and the San Bernardino. Several excavations witness the settling of Ligurian and Celtic populations through relics of the Bronze and Iron Age. During thousands of years the particular landscape of this region determined its historical importance. Rome turned it into a bastion against the Barbarians. The fights between Franks and Lombards took place right here. The name “Bilitionem castrum in campis situm Caninis” entered history during 590 AD. Kings, emperors, the bishop and the city of Como, the Visconti and the dukes Sforza from Milan fought for this city until it finally became of federal dominion in 1500 AD. This submission lasted until the birth of Helvetia; the canton of Ticino came into being through the mediation act of 1803 AD. The emblem of the city shows three medieval castles, which are part of the preserved fortifications. Since the year 2000 the towers, walls and castles belong to the UNESCO world heritage, which recognizes herewith the uniqueness of this fortifications.

On the Maggia river shore…
On a shady meadow of the
Maggia valley you will have an enchanting stay right on the clear Maggia river, where you will have plenty of climbing, diving and refreshing opportunities. During the high season funny games are organized in the swimming pool and on cold weather days the pool is heated. The beautiful river is an ideal place to go for a swim or

float with a rubber dinghy. The kids will have the time of their life with the funny water attractions, on the playground or while doing some handicraft. In the evening you may meet at the barbecue place behind the recreation room or on the restaurant terrace enjoying musical entertainment. If the weather turns bad, the recreation room will be an excellent recreating place. A little shop, caravans for rent, internet corner and WLAN are part of the modern facilities of this beautiful campsite. There are also 700 km of walking tracks, ca-
noeing places, and various climbing walls. Cultural and musical events, among which the Dimitri theatre and the New Orleans jazz festival in Ascona in June, will certainly delight you. The very wellknown and international film festival of Locarno takes place in August.
Valle Maggia The program “traces of art and living” has been introduced
by the Vallemaggia Tourism in order to create circuits with different main focuses and walking tracks which have as a main element the stone’s world. The museum of the Valle Maggia explains the typical rock structures and the Bavona foundation informs about the transhumance. The walking tracks are connected to the ancient paths, which cross the villages and their surroundings and which teach about the cultural and fine art history of the region. This new walking tracks are suitable for families, students and tourists, who want to learn more about this wonderful valley. It does not matter in which season you go for a walk, these paths are always marvelous: during springtime, when the weather is still unpredictable they astonish through the fragrant flowery meadows; in the fall they turn into a fan of golden colors and during the winter the rocky buildings will dazzle you. From
the “sentiero dei romani” you will have a great view on the lower valley, the enchanting villages and the high mountains. This walking track crosses interesting places such as the Madonna del Carmelo. The painter Antonio Vanoni made numerous chapels, murals and wall paintings.

you will find the city of Lugano. The name of this city comes from the Latin word “locus” (“sacred forest”). According to several archaeological findings has this region been populated by Etruscans and Gauls. Between the 14th and 16th century was the city of Lugano alternately controlled by the Italian, French and Swiss domination. The promenade of the old town, the various buildings in Lombard style, the exclusive museums, the mountains, the lake and the varied exhibitions invite you on an exploring, experiencing and “dolcefarniente” stay. The two local mountains, the Monte San Salvatore and the Monte Bré, offer an unforgettable view on the city, the lake of Lugano and the beautiful surrounding mountain scenery. A walking track goes from the Monte Bré down to the village of Bré, which is preserved and equipped with sophisticated artworks. From the San Salvatore mountain a walking track crosses the wonderful village of Carona and ends in the enchanting village of Morcote right on the lake. Further excursions reach the fishermen village of Gandria, the Monte San Giorgio or the Monte Generoso as well as the Liliput world of the Swissminiature in Melide.

a height of 1097 m. There are numerous pathways, which connect the villages of the region and from the mountain peak you will enjoy a wonderful view. Among the characteristic coppice vegetation of the mountains are rare flora and millennia old chestnut trees with hollow trunk to be found. This region is worldwide known because of its fossils, through which it is possible to have a look back about 200 million years ago. At that time the region of the Mendrisiotto was a lagoon along the northern coast of the African continent. The fauna consisted mostly of reptiles, fishes, and invertebrates and at least one reptile (predecessor of the dinosaur), which lived on dry land. A great number of them are displayed in the fossils museum of Meride. Meride is the hometown of several artists and is situated at the foot of the Monte San Giorgio in the hilly Mendrisiotto region. The origin of this picturesque village, which has a Mediterranean flair, probably came into being during the Roman time. By walking around you may discover many 17th century buildings with Rococo balustrades, stuccos and frescos. The small town of Mendrisio with the
