FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS New Caledonia is a unique blend of French holiday playground offering sun, sea, sand, sumptuous cuisine and Melanesian tradition. With its outdoor lifestyle, classic colonial architecture, chic fashionable boutiques, alfresco cafes and fun-filled atmosphere, the major centre of Nouméa, just over two hours flight from Sydney and Brisbane with convenient connections from Melbourne and other major Australian airports - is like a little piece of the Côte d’Azur in the South Pacific. It offers the perfect “Living Lesson” to students who find themselves immersed in French language and culture as they experience the city’s many pâtisseries with their light-as-air croissants and baguettes, the vibrant beach culture of Anse Vata, aromas of New Caledonian coffee and the laughter of the Melanesian girls as they play “le cricket”. New Caledonia is linked to some of history’s greatest adventurers from Captain Cook who discovered the islands in 1774 to Napoleon III who, clearly captivated by its exotic allure - declared the islands to be a part of France in 1853. Highlights of G.E .T Educational Tours' New Caledonia program includes the outstanding Tjibaou Cultural Centre recognised as an indigenous museum of global significance, the stunning beaches and an island lunch at Amédée Lighthouse, located on an idyllic island at the entrance to the world’s biggest lagoon, and French classes conducted by a native French-speaking teacher at the Centre de Rencontres et d’Echanges Internationaux du Pacifique (CREIPAC). Will students hear French in everyday use and be required to speak the language?

What travel documents do we need?

As an increasingly autonomous French "Pays d'outre-mer", New Caledonia's major language is French followed by traditional Kanak dialects. While English is widely understood, French is the language of everyday communications between people, providing students with a fantastic "Living Lesson" through the chance to experience what they've learnt in class.

A valid passport is required. Australia and New Zealand passport holders do not require a visa to participate in our tours. However if you have a foreign passport you may need to comply with visa or re-entry requirements depending on your country of citizenship.

How much luggage can we take? Aircalin offers a free luggage allowance of 20kg with excess baggage carried at the passenger’s own expense. Note that if you are connecting to Sydney or Brisbane, flying with a low-cost airline, you may be subject to a lower baggage allowance or have to pay extra to take baggage. Can I take electrical appliances from home such as camera chargers or music players? Yes, 220V electricity in New Caledonia is suitable for Australian appliances, but you will need a French or European adaptor (two- pin plug with rounded prongs). Some hotels also offer Australian style outlets. What clothing is appropriate? New Caledonia’s sub-tropical climate (similar to Northern Queensland) permits comfortable and informal cotton and other light clothing to be worn year round. Are taxes, levies and surcharges included? Yes, pre-payable taxes such as Australian Departure Tax, fuel surcharges and airport user charges are included. Charges may vary depending on your originating airport and exchange rates and remain subject to change. However, foreign suppliers including airlines, ground operators and hotels may impose additional taxes, levies and charges.

Is Nouméa a safe city? Yes, students enjoy its relaxed and friendly ambience and teachers appreciate the freedom it offers to engage them with the locals. Tell me about the type and standard of accommodation? G·E·T Educational Tours policy is to use hotel rooms with private facilities, televisions, air conditioning and tea/coffee making facilities. Our major hotel is the 2 star Le Pacifique hotel, conveniently located on Nouméa's Anse Vata across the street from the beach. This purpose built hotel offers quality student accommodation with a microwave oven in each room and a lagoon pool. Other options include the recently renovated 3 star Hotel Le Surf, ideally situated between Anse Vata and the Baie des Citrons. Can we be confident in the standard of doctors and medical facilities? Nouméa offers medical facilities consistent with major regional centres in Australia and New Zealand. Doctors, dentists, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and urgent dispensary facilities are available. However it is advisable to carry your own medications. We recommend you ask your own doctor for advice. Do we need travel insurance? Yes, comprehensive travel Insurance is strongly recommended for all passengers. G·E·T Educational Tours offers travel insurance suitable for travel to New Caledonia.
