Welcome The North Coast region stretches along the Atlantic coast from Portballintrae to Downhill through to the heart of the Bann Valley at Kilrea and Garvagh. It is a vast landscape of breathtaking coastlines and spectacular countryside. Immersed in history dating back almost 10,000 years, the town of Coleraine is a gateway to the seaside resorts of Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock, where the dunes and Blue Flag beaches provide a playground for all ages.

Opportunities for outdoor activities abound, including some of the world’s best golf links courses right on our doorstep, while the North Atlantic waves provide a surfer’s paradise. You will never be short of things to do. This year is another big year for events in the area. In June 2013, Coleraine will host a weekend of celebration for the 400th anniversary of the town’s Royal Charter. Whether you’re thinking of coming to the North Coast for the first time, or you are a regular visitor, there will always be something new to see and do. A Potted Hist ory

16 www.northcoastni.com

People have been coming to the North Coast for thousands of years and pockets of history survive through the area’s unique built heritage. Coleraine is steeped in history – over 9000 years of it! Excavations at Mountsandel during the 1970s would suggest that it is the earliest known settlement site in Ireland. Across the River Bann in Somerset Park lies ‘Source’, a magnificent piece of public art which interprets 10,000 years of human settlement in Ireland. From there you may walk, cycle or drive to Coleraine Town Centre where you can find out more about the town’s rich history and culture.

Be sure to pick up a copy of “Round the Ramparts” from the Tourist Information Centre. If you wish to explore the origins of the area by car the Navigation and Plantation Historical Touring Route will tell you all you need to know (see page 19). Both the medieval ruins of Dunluce Castle and Mussenden Temple are found on the edge of dramatic cliff tops, overlooking the Atlantic ocean, which over centuries brought many of Ireland’s invaders and visitors. You will also find many ancient and historic churches in the area, along with numerous dolmens, burial chambers and standing stones, all waiting to be explored. Take a step back in time and discover our story.

The location chosen for the museum was the walled garden of Garvagh House, the former seat of the Canning family.

ST PATRICK’S CHURCH Church Street, Coleraine, BT52 1PY T: 028 7034 4213 W: www.stpats.co.uk The church is located in the centre of Coleraine on the original site of the Early Christian Church founded by St Patrick in the 5th Century A.D. Part of the present church dates from 1613 and it contains many fine and poignant memorials. Outside, to the rear of the church at Anderson Park, are the remains of the earthen wall or rampart that surrounded Coleraine in the early 1600s. Visitors are very welcome but are advised to check opening times by telephoning the Parish Office. Free summer recitals take place every Thursday during July and August.

THE PHOENIX PEACE FOUNTAIN Anderson Park, Circular Road, Coleraine, BT52 1PS The fountain is a gift from the communities of the United States to the communities of Northern Ireland. Inspired by the Northern Ireland peace process of May 1998, it acts as a lasting reminder of America’s support for the process. It is constructed using thousands of surrendered firearms from across the United States. The design incorporates different aspects from each of the six counties and 26 local government areas of Northern Ireland, and is symbolic of the peace that has now been achieved.

Coleraine Road, Portstewart, BT55 7HT

THE GIANT’S SCONCE Windyhill Road (approximately 5 miles south-west of Coleraine) The Sconce is probably the citadel of Nial of the Nine Hostages, 5th century founder of the O’Neill dynasty. It was originally a large circular, stone built fortress with walls 3 metres thick and chambers and tunnels within them. Many legends surround it, including its connection to Navan and Tara in the Republic of Ireland (the site is not readily accessible, but visible from road).

LISSANDUFF RITUAL SITE Lissanduff, Portballintrae, BT57 8RT An ancient water ritual site high above the village of Portaballintrae with a pair of earthen concentric rings specially designed to retain water for ancient purposes of worship. It is accessible from the Beach Road Car Park.

Opposite Flowerfield Arts Centre, the original Church of Agherton (Ballyaghran) dates from at least the 1300s. ERRIGAL OLD CHURCH Ballyrogan Road, Ballintemple, Garvagh, BT51 5BQ It is believed that a small church was built at Errigal around 560 A.D. The church was attacked and rebuilt many times, until it was completely destroyed after the 1641 rebellion and a new church was then built in the village of Garvagh in 1670. In the early days, the church was called “Errigal Adamnan” after St. Adamnan - its patron. Another feature bearing the patron’s name is Onan’s Rock, an inauguration stone within Gortnamoyagh Forest, found near the old church and unusual because of the footprints (said to be Adamnan’s) impressed on the rock. The North Coast offers a fantastic natural environment and a beautiful, rugged coastline providing visitors with ample opportunities to experience exhilarating, ocean-based activities such as waterskiing, wakeboarding, sailing, diving, ocean kayaking, body boarding and more recently, coasteering. The North Coast is gaining a reputation as a surfer’s paradise with waves to suit every surfer from the beginner to the most experienced throughout the year. The East Strand in Portrush boasts the famed Arcadia Wave which is known throughout Ireland and is gathering an international following.

We are fortunate to have RNLI Lifeguards on all our beaches every year from the last weekend in June until the first weekend in September. For further details on how to remain safe while enjoying your favourite watersport visit www.rnli.org/beachlifeguards or T: 0845 045 6999. Apart from the Atlantic coastline the River Bann runs through the area providing a natural arena for less extreme but still arduous sports, such as canoeing and rowing. Indeed, the Bann Rowing Club in Coleraine was the first training ground for 2012 Olympic Medalists, Alan Campbell and the Chambers brothers. If you’re not already a water sports enthusiast, visit the North Coast soon and allow us to convince you! Full details on activity providers, surf schools and lots more can be found on www.northcoastni.com

SURFING Before learning to surf you should be able to swim 50 metres and the best place to learn is with a surf school instructor. All surf schools/instructors are fully qualified, highly experienced surfers and will provide all necessary equipment such as wet suits and boards.

All surfing locations are given on the understanding that you are a competent surfer. Observe all necessary safety checks before going to surf. Always read and obey the safety signs, usually found at the entrance to the beach. If you see someone in difficulty, don’t attempt a rescue. Tell a lifeguard, or, if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. The following information is reproduced by kind permission of Troggs Surf Shop, Portrush. Check www.northcoastni.com for details on surf events and competitions throughout the year.

GONE FISHING Experience the joy of quality game, coarse and sea angling on the North Coast. The Lower Bann produces two thirds of all specimen coarse fish in Ireland. The Bann is also one of the best salmon rivers in Europe. Other varieties of fish which occur commonly in these waters include brown trout, sea trout and dollaghan. The Agivey River, a tributary of the Bann, has an abundance of wild brown trout and hosts regular festivals and competitions throughout the year.

Sea anglers will find excellent sport along the North Coast whether from shore or boat. Offshore excursions can be arranged on fully fitted modern craft with qualified experienced skippers. For further information on coarse, sea or game angling, contact Coleraine Tourist Information Centre or visit www.northcoastni.com.
