WELCOME The North Coast region stretches along Northern Ireland’s Atlantic coast, from Portballintrae to Downhill through to the heart of the Bann Valley at Kilrea and Garvagh. It is a vast landscape of breathtaking coastlines and spectacular countryside. Immersed in history dating back almost 10,000 years, the town of Coleraine is a gateway to the seaside resorts of Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock, where the dunes and Blue Flag beaches provide a playground for all ages, while the waves are renowned by watersports enthusiasts, whatever the discipline.

This year is another big year for North Coast events. The Giro d’Italia (one of cycling’s big three road races), will explode into action on the North Coast on 10th May as it follows the challenging, but spectacular Causeway Coastal Route on Stage 2 of the Big Start 2014. The quality of the golf links courses on the North Coast continues to be recognized as Royal Portrush prepares to host the R&A Amateur Championships in June, with qualifying rounds being played at Portstewart Golf Club. Later, in August, the Home Nations Boat Angling Championships will do battle in the waters off Portrush. Throughout the year other renowned annual events such as the Air Show, the Vauxhall International North West 200 Motor Cycle Races and the Youth Football Northern Ireland Cup will attract visitors from far and wide. Some wonderful hospitality awaits you in a choice of cafes, bistros, bars, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs. Whether you’re thinking of coming to the North Coast for the first time, or you are a regular visitor, there will always be something new to see and do. The Tourist Visitor Centre in Coleraine will be pleased to provide you with any information on the area and assist you with your accommodation booking, whether you are looking for a hotel, guesthouse, B&B, selfcatering property, hostel or a caravan park. The North Coast promises a warm welcome for visitors and an unforgettable experience. Find us on www.northcoastni.com or www.facebook.com/northcoastni or follow us on twitter @NorthCoastni

Footprints In The Sand For over a hundred and fifty years families have been coming to the North Coast to enjoy memorable holiday experiences. Portrush is Northern Ireland’s favourite seaside resort. Children love playing on the beaches, exploring rock pools, giving new activities a go, trying their luck in the amusements or testing their nerve on the white knuckle rides at our thrilling fairground attractions. Follow that with great food and award winning ice-cream and it’s easy to see why.

6 www.northcoastni.com

Portstewart is just a short drive along the coast; famed for its traditional promenade and golden beach stretching for two miles with stunning views of the Inishowen Peninsula. Here too, you can enjoy good food, colourful crafts and art galleries, live music and a variety of leisure activities. For the urban experience, Coleraine - the capital of the Causeway Coast has lots to offer families too – whether you’re looking for entertainment, events for the kids or just a relaxing break. Beaches The North Coast boasts magnificent stretches of golden beaches with three Blue Flag Award beaches and three Resort Seaside Award beaches. With excellent water quality, services and the presence of the RNLI beachguards during the summer months, there is plenty of fun to be had from building sand castles to splashing about the shore’s edge or surfing those North Atlantic waves.

Bushmills Road, Portrush, BT56 8NF

West Bay, just a short stroll to the town with all its attractions, is a family favourite with a newly upgraded promenade walk and views of the bustling harbour.

The Whiterocks beach forms a famous striking landmark on the North Coast with its magnificent chalk cliffs. An Environmental Improvement scheme, due for completion in the late Spring of 2014. It will provide new access to the beach including board walks, viewing platform, shower facilities for water sports users along with the provision of a new off-road walking section of The Causeway Coast Way/Ulster Way, including a footbridge across the gorge and a scenic view point to the east of Whiterocks. The waves at the Whiterocks tend to be larger and stronger making it very popular with body, board and kayak surfers but beware of rip tides.

EAST STRAND Causeway Street, Portrush, BT56 8DZ This golden beach stretches from Portrush to the Whiterocks with superb views over the Skerries to the Scottish Islands. It is backed by sand dunes just waiting to be explored, but watch out for stray golf balls from the famous Royal Portrush golf course.

Step Back In Time People have been coming to the North Coast for thousands of years and pockets of history survive through the area’s unique built heritage. Coleraine town is steeped in history – nearly 10,000 years of it! Excavations at Mountsandel during the 1970’s would suggest that it is the earliest known settlement site in Ireland. Across the River Bann in Somerset Park lies ‘Source’, a magnificent piece of public art which interprets the history of human settlement in Ireland. Along the coastline you will find the iconic medieval ruins of Dunluce Castle and Mussenden Temple perched on the edge of dramatic cliff tops, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean that are well worth a visit. Elsewhere in the area, there are many ancient and historic churches in the area, along with numerous dolmens, burial chambers and standing stones, all waiting to be explored. Take a step back in time and discover our story.

ST PATRICK’S CHURCH

this is the most distinguished design. It is typical of the High Victorian interpretation of the Early English Gothic style. The stone used is very dark basalt with white Glasgow trim to the windows and doors and banding. The bells are by Messrs Taylor and Co. of Loughborough - a memorial to Lady Bruce.

CAMUS CROSS AND BALLAUN STONE

THE PHOENIX PEACE FOUNTAIN

and a new Church was then built in the village of Garvagh in 1670. In the early days, the Church was called “Errigal Adamnan” after St. Adamnan - its patron. Another feature bearing the patron’s name is Onan’s Rock, an inauguration stone within Gortnamoyagh Forest, found near the old Church and unusual because of the footprints (said to be Adamnan’s) impressed on the rock.

KILREA OLD CHURCH Church Street, Kilrea, BT51 5QU The ancient church, which gives the town its name, stands on a height in the town centre.

AGHERTON OLD CHURCH Coleraine Road, Portstewart, BT55 7HT Church Street, Coleraine, BT52 1PY T: 028 7034 4213 W: www.stpats.co.uk The church is located in the centre of Coleraine on the original site of the Early Christian Church founded by St Patrick in the 5th Century A.D. Part of the present church dates from 1613 and it contains many fine and poignant memorials. Outside, to the rear of the church at Anderson Park, are the remains of the earthen wall or rampart that surrounded Coleraine in the early 1600s. Visitors are very welcome but are advised to check opening times by telephoning the Parish Office. Free summer recitals take place every Thursday during July and August.

ST MALACHY’S CHURCH 72 Nursery Avenue, Coleraine, BT52 1LR Built in 1937 by Padraig Gregory, St Malachy’s Church is a listed building. Described by Rowan as “ A powerful neo-Romanesque composition with an offset stumpy tower, reminiscent of St.Albans, half-way down one side. Seven-bay nave with paired clerestory windows and a big wheel in the entrance gable.”

CHRIST CHURCH 50 Main St, Castlerock T:028 7084 8127 Christ Church, Castlerock was built in the year 1870. The architect was Frederick William Porter. Anderson Park, Circular Road, Coleraine, BT52 1PS Inspired by the Northern Ireland peace process of May 1998, the fountain is a gift from the communities of the United States to the communities of Northern Ireland. It is constructed using thousands of surrendered firearms from across the United States. The design incorporates different aspects from each of the six counties and 26 local government areas of Northern Ireland, and is symbolic of the peace that has now been achieved.

GARVAGH MUSEUM AND HERITAGE CENTRE 142a Main Street, Garvagh, BT51 5AE T: 028 2955 7924 E: info@garvaghmuseum.com W: www.garvaghmuseum.com OPENING HOURS: Jun-Aug: Wed-Sat 2pm-5pm (Groups welcome by arrangement throughout the year) Garvagh Museum in the Bann Valley is unique in Northern Ireland in that it is a rural folk museum. This exceptional collection comprising almost two thousand artefacts is a valuable resource used by both children and senior citizens alike. The location chosen for the museum was the walled garden of Garvagh House, the former seat of the Canning family.

The remains of the only existing High Cross in County Londonderry stand in a roadside graveyard, finely carved with biblical scenes in red sandstone. Beside a railed grave to the north of the graveyard is a Ballaun Stone, a stone with a large hollow used as a primitive font.

THE GIANT’S SCONCE Windyhill Road (approximately 5 miles south-west of Coleraine) The Sconce is probably the citadel of Nial of the Nine Hostages, 5th century founder of the O’Neill dynasty. It was originally a large circular, stone built fortress with walls 3 metres thick and chambers and tunnels within them. Many legends surround it, including its connection to Navan and Tara in the Republic of Ireland (the site is not readily accessible, but visible from road).

LISSANDUFF RITUAL SITE Lissanduff, Portballintrae, BT57 8RT

Opposite Flowerfield Arts Centre, the original Church of Agherton (Ballyaghran) dates from at least the 1300s. COWABUNGA!

The surf conditions on the North Coast are fast gaining a highly respected reputation, with waves to suit every surfer from the beginner to the most experienced, throughout the year. The East Strand in Portrush boasts the famed Arcadia wave which is known throughout Ireland and is gathering an international following.

Apart from the Atlantic coastline, The River Bann runs through the area providing a natural arena for less extreme but still arduous sports, such as canoeing and rowing. Indeed, Coleraine’s Bann Rowing Club was where the 2012 Olympic Medalists, Alan Campbell and the Chambers brothers, Peter and Richard began their rise to success.

We are fortunate to have RNLI Lifeguards on all our beaches every year from the last weekend in June until the first weekend in September. For further details on how to remain safe while enjoying your favourite watersport visit: www.rnli.org/beachlifeguards or T: 0845 045 6999

If you’re not already a water sports enthusiast, visit the North Coast soon and allow us to convince you! Full details on activity providers, surf schools and other relevant information can be found on www.northcoastni.com

The North Coast is blessed with a beautiful, rugged coastline providing visitors with an inviting environment to experience exhilarating, oceanbased activities such as waterskiing, wakeboarding, sailing, diving, ocean kayaking, body boarding and more recently, coasteering.

Hook, Line & Sinker Anglers get hooked on the North Coast and it’s easy to see why, considering the bountiful locations for game, coarse and sea angling . The Lower Bann produces two thirds of all specimen coarse fish in Ireland. The Bann is also one of the best salmon rivers in Europe. Other varieties of fish which occur commonly in these waters include Brown Trout, Sea Trout and Dollaghan. The Agivey River, a tributary of the Bann, has an abundance of wild Brown Trout and hosts regular festivals and competitions throughout the year. Sea anglers find excellent sporting conditions along the North Coast whether from shore or boat and we look forward to welcoming the Home Nations Boat Angling Championships to Portrush in August. For the leisure sea anglers, offshore excursions can be arranged on fully fitted modern craft with qualified experienced skippers. It is essential that an angler acquires a rod licence to fish in either ‘coarse’ or ‘game’ fisheries on the North Coast. Licences are available at designated tackle shops. An

additional permit charge may also be required before the angler can fish in particular waters. This can be issued by the fishery owner. There are three categories of fisheries: • The Public Angling Estate - managed by the Dept of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Inland Fisheries Division (T: 028 9025 8825). To fish in these waters a rod licence and a DCAL fishing permit are required. The permit can be bought from tackle shops. • Private Angling Waters – a permit and rod licence are required to fish in these privately owned waters. • Undeveloped Waters – the permission of the landowner and a rod licence are required to fish in these waters. No further permit is required. The Honorable The Irish Society operates angling beats on the main Lower Bann River. It has also sub-let all of the tributary rivers to local angling clubs

GAME ANGLING Salmon, sea trout, brown and rainbow trout are found in abundance in the local rivers Bush, Bann (Lower), Agivey and some ‘put and take’ lakes. Game Fishing is seasonal and, as such, activity is confined from 1 March to 31 October. Permits and rod licences can be obtained from:
