Un intérieur typique Au cœur de l’ancien quartier typique des marins boulonnais en haut de la rue du Mâchicoulis en escaliers, une authentique maison de pêcheur construite en 1870 permet de découvrir l’habitat reconstitué d’une famille de marins vers 1900. Meubles, objets et costumes vous font partager la vie rude et vous replongent au cœur de l’histoire de la pêche boulonnaise.

Un lieu de recueillement Son architecture évoque la coque d’un bateau. La vue sur le port, la rade (et parfois l’Angleterre) est imprenable. Sanctuaire dédié au souvenir des marins disparus en mer, la Chapelle est décorée d’ex-voto et de bouées, de couleur pour les bateaux toujours en mer, noires et blanches pour les bâtiments disparus.

This house built in 1870 in the heart of the old fishermen’s quarter can be reached by climbing the stairs of the rue de Mâchicoulis. It is the authentic former home of a fisherman’s family and reveals sometimes hard life of fisherfolk in the period around 1900. Inside you can see the furniture, outfits and objects used by the family, introducing you to the story of Boulogne’s fishing tradition.

The calvary is built in the style of the hull of a ship. From here there is a magniﬁcient view upon the port, the outer harbor, and on occasions, the coast of England. The calvary is a sanctuary dedicated to the memory of those lost at sea. The Chapel has many prayer offerings and is decorated with buoys, coloured ones for boats at sea and black and white ones for those which have been lost.

LES REMPARTS THE RAMPARTS Le site fortifié du XIIIème siècle le mieux conservé du nord de la France. La ville haute ou « ville fortifiée » constitue un remarquable ensemble urbain rectangulaire d’environ 400m sur 300, dominé par le beffroi et le dôme de la cathédrale. Elle est ceinte de puissants remparts édifiés au début du XIIIème siècle par le Comte de Boulogne sur les bases de la muraille gallo-romaine. The best conserved 13th century fortified site in northern France. The old town occupies about a square kilometer of period buildings dominated by the belfry and the cathedral dome. The medieval fortifications were constructed between 1227 and 1231 by the Earl of Boulogne.

Érigé en même temps que les remparts, le château comtal constitue la pièce maîtresse du dispositif de défense médiéval. C’est le premier château fort construit sans donjon dans l’histoire de l’architecture militaire européenne.

Built during the same era as the walls, the castle was the powerful centerpiece of the town’s medieval fortiﬁcations. Unlike other castles there is no central keep, a quirk of design unique in the history of medieval fortiﬁcations in Europe.

THE BASILICA The basilica of Notre Dame was erected between 1827 and 1866 by Father Haffreingue on the ruins of the former cathedral which had been destroyed after the French revolution. The design of this colossal ediﬁce with its 101 meter high dome was inspired by St Paul’s cathedral in London, St Peter’s in Rome, as well as the Pantheon and the Invalides in Paris. Datant du XIIème siècle, c’est le monument le plus ancien de la ville. Donjon du premier château comtal, de type roman, il a été transformé en beffroi au début du XIIIème siècle. En 2005, il a été inscrit au Patrimoine Mondial de l’Humanité de l’UNESCO. This monument dating from the 12th century is the oldest building in the city. Originally the Roman style keep of the earliest castle of the Earls of Boulogne, the tower was converted into the Belfry in the 13th century. In 2005 it was listed by UNESCO.

LA CASA SAN MARTIN CASA SAN MARTIN Un petit morceau d’Argentine à Boulogne. Cette maison fut habitée de 1848 à sa mort par le Général argentin San Martin qui libéra son pays (1816), le Chili (1817) et le Pérou (1821) de la domination espagnole. A small part of Argentina in Boulogne. This house was the home of the Argentine General Jose de San Martin from 1848 until his death. San Martin was the liberator of his own country as well as of Chile and Peru from Spanish colonial rule.
